ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL 2015 In this Lenten season, it seems a fitting time for us to reflect on the call to share the Joy of the Gospel wherever there is despair. As Jesus’ missionary disciples we are encouraged to share this joy with the world with love and compassion. This year we are called to respond to the many needs of our families of our diocese through pastoral, charitable and educational services administered compassionately to the people throughout the Diocese. The goal for our parish this year is $25,515.00. If every parish family makes a sacrificial gift in proportion to its financial circumstanc- es, our parish would be blessed beyond measure. Make a pledge now and then honor your commitment in one or more installments. Your support is critical for the success of this years Annual Catholic Appeal. Thank you. ST. FRANCIS CABRINI CATHOLIC ACADEMY UNIVERSAL PRE-K PROGRAM ONLY FOR CHILDREN BORN IN 2011 Registration for the Universal Pre-K Program begins on March 16, 2015. J ESUS AND THE BLIND MAN This fourth Sunday of Lent, also known as “Laetare Sunday” — the Sunday of rejoicing- marks the halfway point in our Lenten preparation for Easter. In today’s gospel a blind man receives the gift of sight. As the story unfolds, light dawns, and with each confrontation and each conversation, he gains more understanding of just who gave him that gift. At the end, for the first time, he sees — really sees. The full splendor of spiritual light is shown forth when he says, “I do believe, Lord” and worships Jesus. The central message is that through Baptism Christ heals our spiritual blind- ness and makes us witnesses of the truth. Yet, the sacrament of baptism is not magic, and its graces become fully operative in our lives only to the extent that we accept and live the promises made years ago in our names. It is tempting to think that believing in Christ means simply that we affirm the creed, or that we agree that Jesus existed and worked miracles and died and rose from the dead. To accept these truths is important but to truly believe in Jesus Christ also requires that we commit ourselves to Christ, by firmly resolving to follow His example of unselfish, thoughtful concern for others. In our daily lives, we are challenged to face our blindness, whether it’s spir- itual blindness or blindness in our thoughts, attitudes or our actions toward others. So let us ask Jesus to show us any places of darkness that we still have in our hearts and in our world. Let us ask him to shine the light of his love and mercy on us, and help us to see as He sees. CHARISMATIC PRAYER VIGIL The prayer group "Growing in God's Love" of St. Joseph parish invite the community to a Lenten vigil: Saturday March 21, 2015, from 7:00 pm to 11:00 pm, beginning with the Holy Mass at 6:00pm. Entrance for the vigil is at 1080 Willoughby Ave. All are welcome! It is with much sadness that we share with the St. Joseph Parish community the unexpected passing of John Ed- ward Whitfield last Wednesday, March 4, 2015. For the past ten years, Mr. Whitfield had served our community as the Immigration Lawyer at the Scalabrini Center. We will hold a mass in his memory on Sunday, March 22 at 5:00pm. May the Lord welcome him in heaven and console his family with the hope of resurrection.
