Guildford Town Centre General Manager, Peggy White, said the goal throughout the massive redevelopment for the centre was to maintain familiarity and convenience, and draw their rich history, bright future into one spectacular design. It’s the reason for the West Coast influences, the brilliant and natural lighting, living walls and more stores. It’s what the new Guildford is quickly transforming into, and it is an exciting future indeed.Peggy said the project hit one million construction man hours as of January 9, and March 3 marked 1,000 days since the project began on June 7, 2010.“Our retailers have been very patient with us,” she said. “And our customers have been terrific and very helpful throughout the process through their commentsand suggestions. We want to know where the challenges are and how to makethings better.”Construction for the $280 million redevelopment will be complete by September 2014, but it’s hard to miss the exciting master design that is starting to take shape. Beautiful new tiling throughout, grand pillars, spectacular green space – it’s clear that 2013 will be an exciting year for Guildford Town Centre and the community.“Our first and most significant opening will be on August 28, 2013,” said Peggy White. “We’re opening Phase 2, or the expansion of the centre, and it’s the first part of many to come. We’re building 200,000 sq. ft of retail and we’re looking at around 75 new stores. Pretty much everybody you want to see south of the Fraser River will be here,” she said. She pointed out how a project of this size doesn’t come without its challenges, and how teamwork plays a huge role in its success. She credits the multiple teams who have to come together daily to achieve smooth, safe operations, and ahousekeeping team that removes every speck of construction dust by the time the doors open each day.“My favourite part is to see how cohesive the whole team is; it’s really unbelievable how everybody looks out for one another. That’s the most heartwarming thing,”she said.Currently, the centre attracts 10,000,000 shoppers annually and once constructionis complete, the new Guildford Town Centre is expected to double that.

The average family of four uses an estimated 1,000 plastic bags a year. These bags can take up to 1,000 years to break down in our landfills. What are we doing to help? We’re glad you asked.

Q: When did Guildford Town Centre begin collection of plastic bags?

A: Our program began in Spring 2009 as part of an eco-friendly promotion and has become a great success.

Q: Do you know how many bags have been collected?

A: Yes! Thanks to our customers, in 2012 we recycled 24,000 pounds of plastic bags, or more than 2.4 million bags.

Q: What happens to the bags after collection?

A: These bags are converted into plastic pellets, which are then used to make plastic lumber for decks, park benches, picnic tables and waste receptacles.

It’s sustainable green art and design at its finest, and a breath of fresh air, literally.Living walls have come to Guildford Town Centre and the plant-based designs are as beneficial as they aremagnificent. Currently, the shopping centre has oneinstallation complete, which is composed of two panelscovering a total of 1,400 sq. ft., with 59 species and 10,000 plants. “We take something that’s not very visuallyappealing to start with, like a concrete wall, and transformit into something beautiful,” said Patrick Poiraud, DesignConsultant and Principal of Green Over Grey - Living Walls & Design Inc. This style of beautiful is created from locally grown plants and Canadian product.Green Over Grey started up in France, which is where this style of landscaping originates, and relocated to BC in 2008. They’re currently working on projects from Victoria to Quebec. In 2010 they installed the Semiahmoo Library exterior living wall on 152 Ave in South Surrey.Poiraud said Guildford’s interior living walls were inspired by abstract tree forms, in keeping with the City of Surreybeing the City of Parks. The exterior living walls, whichwill be completed this summer, will have an entirely

different design.“It’s a really exciting project; a total transformation,” he said of the exterior project which will feature more than 8,000 square feet of locally grown Canadian plant spe-cies, and recycled materials. The highly visual installation will see two oversized living wall panels installed directly above 104 Avenue on the overpass that connects the twosections of the super regional shopping centre.“The outside installation is going to be a huge wall. We don’t have anything like that anywhere and there’s so much traffic under it. Anyone can enjoy it,” Poiraud said. Not only is the design visually stunning, living walls are also insulating, lending coolness in the summer and retaining warmth in the winter. They have been known to have a calming effect and they save energy.

Interior Living Walls• It took more than 10,000 individual plants to create our interior living walls.

• 59 unique plant species were used, all locally grown or Canadian.

• These plants are a constant source of oxygen, removing carbon dioxide and other indoor pollutants.

• Our indoor living walls are among the most biologically diverse in North America.

• Living wall plants thrive in a hydroponic, soil-free environment.

• Waterproof eco-panels and fabric the plants grow in are 100 per cent recycled materials.

• Energy efficient lighting in front of the living walls is better than fluorescent and LED in output.

General Manager, Peggy White, in the driver’s seat surrounded by her team.

It’s an exciting time for Ivanhoé Cambridge, Guildford Town Centre and the surrounding community. It’s not everyday you have the opportunity to be a part of history and the future at the same time.

As the shopping centre is being transformed into the largest regional shopping centre this side of the Fraser River, the modern changes are hard to miss. Elegant new tile completely changes the face of the centre and in the summer, this will be complemented by soft seating. Our spectacular living walls are already hard at work creating a calming atmosphere – and a cleaner one at that!

What’s beautiful about the new master design for the shopping centre is it reflects what we’re all about on the West Coast – an environmentally conscious attitude with an organic edge, celebrating a rich heritage and

optimistic of a bright future.

The redevelopment is a fresh start for the centre, and with the elimination of smoking on the property and the planting of 600 new trees, Guildford Town Centre is setting an example and leading the way for a sustainable future based on healthy living.

While we may be changing, our retailers still offer a full shopping experience and there is more to come. Plus, it’s easier to get around and you’ll find plenty of parking and easy access to the new parkade off of 150 Street.

Words cannot express it. There’s only one way to fully enjoy all these wonderful changes, now and in the future, and that's to simply come out and see us.rich history. bright future. Be a part of it.
