  • April 26, 2020 Third Sunday of Easter

    From Pastors Desk

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, Many times, as I write these columns, the feeling that it is more for myself than others creeps up. Now, more than be-fore I begin to get this feeling, since there are no bulletins being distributed, and I’m not even sure how many people are reading what I have written. Even during those times, when it seems to be self-directed, people will still tell me how much it was something they needed to hear, or it was as if it was written for them. God does work in mysterious ways. Over Easter week, many of the priests I would normally be on retreat with connected on a conference call, to talk about our experiences. One of them, who is one of the holiest priests I knew, stated that he was still on sabbatical, but liv-ing back in the rectory, and the greatest challenge he was facing was not hopping back into the life of the parish. He went on to explain that, while he could insert himself directly into the parish online activity and do all the things that he could see as necessary, that it would not be the answer to the situation. He went on to beautifully state, that what his parishioners were seeking, what they desired was not him, but something beyond him, the Presence. It should be mentioned that the priests’ retreat I attend is given by Communion and Liberation, which is a movement within the Church, and was founded by Msgr. Luigi Giusanni. A very holy and brilliant man, Msgr. Giusanni left us various writings to guide us through our journey of discovering Christ, here and now present. For most of us, the first book we read of his is The Religious Sense, which essentially speaks of the desire that rests within each human heart for something beyond the self, a desire for God. It is that desire which my friend was speaking. Our very existence cries out to know what our purpose is, to come to know who we are, and enter into that relationship with others, and the Oth-er, through which we come to know ourselves. While many people respond that all of this is very Theological, at the heart of every life the question should arise, “Why am I here?” Most atheists will point to various scientific data and philosophical arguments, which they have committed to memory, as well as the practice of overwhelming people with questions that are either nonsensical or in need of more than the one word answers they demand. Unfortunately, that tends to shut down discussion, and real inquiry into the existence of God, which is convenient for those who want to appear right, but not those who really want to pursue the Truth. One of the most obvious proofs for the existence of God, is that within the human heart there is a desire for something great-er than ourselves, something that makes sense of existence. The fact that we exist at all is a challenge to ask why; when we realize the unlikelihood that the effects of the Universe being created and expanding would allow for any life, let alone sentient beings, the greatest question put to philosophers and scientists is “Why is there something rather than nothing?” By the way, it was a priest, Fr. Georges Lemaître, who invented the Big Bang Theory. Within the human heart there is that desire for God, that part of us which tells us that God exists, no matter what intel-lectual games are played (Socrates himself mocked those Sophists who played rhetorical games), or what substitutes we try to replace Him with (whether it is the poverty of material wealth or addiction), or those things that continue to try and drown out His voice whispering to us. Perhaps this is the perfect time to listen for the voice of God in the si-lence. Whether we use this time to reexamine our relationship with God, and His Church, or use it to reconnect with family and friends, whether it is those we are quarantined with or those we are communicating with through electronic means, we have opportunities to deepen our relationships. Pax, Fr. Henry

Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. . GOD’S PLAN Saint Peter speaks to us twice today. In the first reading, we hear an excerpt from his sermon on Pentecost; in the second, part of his first letter. Once a frightened, uneducated fisherman who often said just the wrong thing, now Peter is speaking what he knows to be true. Everything Jesus had said now makes sense. His death and rising were all part of God’s plan, and our faith and hope can be centered on God. Today’s Gospel tells the story of Jesus’ walk to Emmaus with two of the disciples. Frightened, sad, and confused, the two of them don’t recognize Jesus, who tells them what we heard Peter say above: All this had to happen as part of God’s plan. In the end, these disci-ples recognize Jesus as we are to recognize him—in the breaking of the bread. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. Diocese of Rockville Centre announces Morning Star Initiative

As you may have heard, the Diocese of Rockville Centre has decided to launch a bold plan, called the Morning Star Initiative, to revitalize Catho-lic elementary school education on Long Island. The goal of this initiative is to restore a robust Catholic culture to the DRVC schools, improve academics, and create a more fiscally sustainable model for schools. The Diocese will partner with the Marianists, who have two centuries of Catholic educational commitment and expertise. The Diocese has asked Brother Thomas Cleary, S.M., President of Chaminade High School, to serve as the Chief Revitalization Officer and to spearhead this effort. He will be assisted by his fellow Marianists, who will seek feedback and ideas from the full spectrum of those with a stake in a revitalized Catholic elementary education, including our parishioners. We value your input,

so please share your thoughts. Please visit the Diocese of Rockville Centre’s website at Morningstarinitiative.org .
