Comprised of Kay McNulty, Marlyn Wescoff,Fran Bilas, Ruth Lichterman, Adele Goldstine(and Betty Snyder), these ladies were the first“computers” working on ENIAC at theUniversity of Pennsylvania’s Moore School ofEngineering. Bearing the job title of “comput-er” the ladies were responsible for making cal-culations for tables of firing and bombing tra-jectories, and to determine the correctsequence of steps to complete the calcula-tions for each problem and to set up theENIAC accordingly. (This, by the way, meantthe women manuevered 3,000 switches and80 tons of hardware in order to programENIAC by hand). The need to perform the cal-culations with greater speed prompted
ENIACs development, hence making theseflesh-and-blood “computers” obsolete. Adele
Goldstine and Betty Jennings were instru-mental in programming ENIACs stored pro-
gram, Goldstine was also responsible for writ-ing ENIAC’s original technical manual.
Through their contributions, we gained thefirst software application and the first pro-
gramming classes. The ladies of ENIAC wereinducted into the WITI Hall of Fame in 1997.

America's First Lady of Engineering
Lillian Moller Gilbreth is known as theMother of Modern Management and
America's First Lady of Engineering. Shewas the first female to be elected to theNational Academy of Engineering.
Lillian Moller was born in Oakland, Californiaon May 24, 1878. In 1900, she received herBachelor's degree in Literature from theUniversity of California at Berkeley. Twoyears later, she earned her Master's degreein Literature. In 1915, Lillian earned herDoctoral degree in Psychology from BrownUniversity.
Eleven years before receiving her Ph.D.,Lillian married Frank Gilbreth. Together,they had 12 children. Two of the childrenwent on to write two books, "Cheaper by theDozen" and "Belles on Their Toes," abouttheir life in the Gilbreth household. Frankand Lillian devoted themselves to findingthe "one best way" to perform any task inorder to increase efficiency and productivityin industry. These studies are called timeand motion studies.
In June 1924, Frank died suddenly of aheart attack. Lillian continued the work theyhad begun, writing four books and teachingindustrial engineering courses at variousschools, including Purdue, Bryn Mawr, andRutgers. Lillian Gilbreth has accomplishedmany things. She was the first person tointegrate psychology into concepts of indus-trial management.
During the Great Depression, PresidentHoover asked her to join the EmergencyCommittee for Unemployment. While on thiscommittee, she created a successful nation-wide program, "Share the Work," that creat-ed many new jobs. During World War II,Lillian worked as a consultant for the gov-ernment. She oversaw the conversion offactories to military bases and war plants.Lillian is credited with many inventions.These inventions include the foot-pedaltrash can and refrigerator door shelves.
During her lifetime, Lillian Gilbreth receivedmany honors. At the age of 89, she was the
first woman to be elected into the NationalAcademy of Engineering. She was also
issued membership number 1 by theSociety of Women Engineers. Lillian
Gilbreth died on January 2, 1972 inPhoenix, Arizona at the age of 94.

Rick Snyder todayannounced two communities have beenselected by the Michigan State HousingDevelopment Authority (MSHDA) to takepart in the Selected Level Michigan MainStreet program. Those communities areOtsego and the City of Lansing’s Downtowndistrict. Lansing’s Old Town district has beenpart of the Michigan Main Street programsince 2006.
As part of the Selected Level of MichiganMain Street, Otsego and Downtown Lansingwill receive five years of intensive technicalassistance, with a focus on revitalizationstrategies designed to attract new residents,business investment, economic growth andjob creation to their central business dis-tricts.
“The Michigan Main Street program willhelp these two communities create opportu-nities for redevelopment, placemaking andeconomic growth just as it has in down-towns throughout Michigan for the past 10years,” Snyder said. “Vibrant communitiesand downtowns are critical as we look toattract new investment, help local business-es grow and retain and attract the talent thatis needed to reinvent Michigan.”
The Michigan Main Street program ties inwith Governor Snyder’s placemaking effortsto create vibrant communities acrossMichigan. These efforts are based on numer-ous studies showing that investing in place-making creates vibrant city centers anddowntowns, making the state economicallystronger. There are currently 42 communi-ties participating in the Michigan Main Street
program at all levels, including 18 at theSelect and Master levels.
The underlying premise of Main Street is aFour Point Approach® that encourages com-munity economic development in fourareas:
• Organization: Getting everyone workingtoward the same goal and assembling theappropriate human and financial resourcesto implement a Main Street revitalizationprogram.
• Promotion: Selling a positive image ofthe commercial district and encouragingconsumers and investors to live, work, shop,play and invest in the Main Street district.
• Design: Getting the downtown into topphysical shape. Capitalizing on its bestassets, such as historic buildings and pedes-trian-oriented streets, is just part of the story.
• Economic Restructuring: Strengthening acommunity's existing economic assets whileexpanding and diversifying its economicbase.
“Programs like Michigan Main Street pro-vide downtown communities with the toolsneeded to develop thriving downtowns,”said MSHDA Executive Director ScottWoosley. “In turn, these tools can be used tocreate jobs, provide desirable places to liveand build a sense of place for Michigan res-idents.”
