Film Festival News

The Ballston Spa Film Festival is already shaping up to be a great event. We've had more great films come in than we could have hoped for. A two minute sneak peek at a few of them can be found on our website http://www.bspafilm.com/films.html. The following short films have been chosen as part of the early selections for the festival. New Detroit - 15 min - NYC Ben Bowman of NYU's Film Department crafts a gorgeously grim and twistedly funny vision of a retro-bureaucratic future in which we've extinguished the sun and must find an alternative. Scapegoats – 9 min – Los Angeles From Writer Director Jesse Lawler (Pirate Camp starring Corbin Bernsen) Stars Joshua Feinman (Mr. Woodcock, Transformers) Ryan Honey (General Hospital) and Kaitlin Olson (It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, The Riches, Curb Your Enthusiasm). When a roommate messes up the

kitchen someone has to take the fall. The Cobbler – 15 min – New York Directed by Minnie Tran and written by Voorheesville, NY native Bernie Schallehn. This short film stars Randall Duk Kim (The Keymaker in The Matrix Reloaded, Dr. Crab in Memoirs of A Geisha). This quirky comedy may touch you somewhere deep in your stomach. Jean's Postmodern Masterpiece - 13 min - Oberlin, OH Oberlin College sophomore Jason Outenreath wrote and directed this sharp satire of egomaniacal student filmmaker auteurs. The lengths Jean will go to for his art are nothing compared to the lengths he'll go to for his reputation among his peers.

eScape - excerpts - Scotia, NY Mike Feurstein directed over 30 local student actors ages 5-15 in this sci-fi mix of Lost and The Matrix, shot entirely in the Capital Region. These are just a few of the many great short films we have received. Our selection process has just begun. More films will be announced soon. We're especially pleased with the quality of the films made by area students. Entries have come in from California, Canada, Ohio, Missouri, Pennsylvania, Indiana and the Capital District. Our sponsorships are coming along pretty well as we are about halfway to the amount needed for a successful event. CDTA has just joined BSNB, British Atlantic, Ballston Spa Veterinary Clinic, Whistling Kettle and Adirondack Trust among other sponsors. Of course, we can always use more support. If you would like to be a sponsor or know someone who would you can do so online in our e-commerce store here http://www.ballston.org/store/Results.asp or by contacting Daniel DeFabio 309-4970 [email protected]

Website Banner Ads: The BSBPA website, www.ballston.org, gets thousands of visits every month. Our business members al-ready benefit from free listing and free links to their own websites. The BSBPA offers banner ads on our home page and specific category pages on our site. If you haven't been to the web site lately, check it out. These ads are links to the advertiser’s web site and are an inexpensive and effective manner of marketing your business. You get 24/7 exposure at a price that can't be beat. There are 2 options. Option 1 is a ban-ner ad on your main category page (Restaurants, for example). Cost: 3 months for $60.00, 6 months for $110.00, 12 months for $200.00. Option 2 is your ad on the home page of the BSBPA web site as well as your main category page for an additional $10.00 per month. (Example: An Antiques store banner ad will be displayed on the Antiques page and will also be displayed on the home page.) Cost: 3 months for $90.00, 6 months for $170.00, 12 months for $320.00. Banner Ads are links to your website or can be stand-alone (i.e. you do not need to have a website to have a banner ad). Each banner displays five ads at a time. Ads will randomly rotate on the banner. For example, if there are ten ads to display, each time the page is refreshed the banner ads will rotate randomly so that all ads will be displayed in a random/rotating manner. Ads can be made from images provided by the advertiser for as little as $25.00 Prices are subject to change upon renewal. To take advantage of this opportunity contact Cliff or Ellen for more in-formation.

Brookside Museum Announces High School Art Competition Brookside Museum is inviting high school juniors and seniors to participate in a juried art competition. The winning entry will be used to produce the 2008 Village of Ballston Spa Commemorative Ornament. "We are thrilled about this pro-ject," said Joy Houle, Brookside Museum's Executive Director. "This is a great opportunity for high school students to get experi-ence working on a professional project and we are excited about working with talented juniors and seniors."

Each year, Brookside Museum produces a commemorative or-nament that features a different historic property portrayed by a local artist. In 2003 the ornament featured The Old Iron Spring by Karin Vollkom-mer; 2004 featured Brookside by Phil Spaziani; 2005 featured Ballston Spa National Bank by Lisa Martinez; 2007 featured The Village Office by Donna Martin. This program was originally developed in 2003 as a fund-raiser for the Ballston Area Community Center. In 2004 and 2005, BACC and Brookside collaborated for a joint fund-raiser. In 2006, neither organi-zation had the funds or other resources

to create the ornament. Since 2007, Brookside has been ad-ministering the project. In 2008, the ornament will fea-ture the Medbery. Brookside is soliciting original artwork cre-ated by high school juniors and seniors enrolled in public schools. All entries meeting the identified criteria will be exhib-ited in Brookside's Long Room Gallery May 16 through Au-gust 29. Entries must be re-ceived with the proper registra-tion form no later than Thurs-day, May 1 at 4:00 PM. Details, including forms and competition rules can be found at www.brooksidemuseum.org.

Summer 2008 Summer Concerts in the Park Series Each Summer the Ballston Spa Business and Professional Association sponsors a summer concert series

which draws hundreds of visitors and members of the Ballston Spa community to Wiswall Park to enjoy free live mu-sic amid our lovely Wiswall Park gardens. As the concerts in Wiswall Park have grown in popularity, the series has expanded to ten performances held each Thursday evening of summer from late June to early September. We are excited about the diverse line-up for the 2008 season, with musical genres for everyone. The series opens on June 19 with Rockabilly favorites, The Lustre Kings. Other acts scheduled this summer include: String Dusters (Bluegrass), Sonny & Perley (Pop and jazz standards), Mudbug Uprising (Rock), Happy Balky & the Good Livin’ (Acoustic alterna-tive), Jumpdaddies (Swing) and a special children’s program featuring the Zucchini Brothers. We will be celebrating Travers Week on August 21 with Audiostars, a dynamic group made up of former members of two popular local bands, The Burners UK and The Refrigerators. We continue to add new performers for the final few concert spots.

Since its inception twenty-five years ago, the BSBPA has relied upon local businesses to fund the Concert in the Park budget, which has grown to almost $8,000. Our goal is to raise $9,000 to continue increasing the publicity of the series beyond Saratoga County and to hire the wide variety of popular bands that we have had for the past few years. We are asking that you consider making a donation and being listed as a sponsor of the entire series. See be-low for a list of the various sponsorships available. As an additional benefit to those listed, each band also provides a link to the BSBPA’s website from its website.

In addition to our standard sponsorships, there is one “naming rights” sponsorship available for a donation of

$1,200.00. This sponsorship includes naming the series the “XYZ” Concerts in Wiswall Park, your logo on the sand-wich boards used to publicize each concert, and all of the benefits included with the “Singers and Soloists” level sponsorship. This year’s naming rights sponsor will be selected by the concert committee from those expressing in-terest before April 20. We hope to finalize our sponsors by May 1. If you are interested in being a sponsor please contact Alison Thomas at 899-1518 or by e-mail at [email protected] or Ellen Mottola at 885-2772 or by e-mail at [email protected]. Thank you and we look forward to your support this summer.
