James Nelson looked like he enjoyed the sun as he made it back just in time for our March board meeting. When the sun comes out we all seem to be far more motivated to get things ready on the boats. I am personally behind schedule on the Neverhome and hope to make some head way over the next couple of weeks. I have to get her ready for Safety Weekend and then she has to strut her stuff for Sailpast. I was trying to organize another “Coffee with the Commodore” this month but was unable to make it happen as business concerns raised their head. Hopefully I will be able to schedule something in the near future.

We had a great couple of weeks in the desert visiting with various members who were in the area for some sunshine. We saw Jim Mercier (Carol was baby sitting), Wayne and Cathy Wood, Dave and
Dawn Cassells, and Rob and Wanda Goodheart, who made it down after having some exciting adventures with the Silver Bullet. We got home on Sunday and it snowed the next day! Neal Tyldsley donated a lot of time putting together an Irish Pub Night that I understand was a lot of fun. Unfortunately it was not well supported by the membership. Perhaps it was timing (the end of Spring Break) but we all should be supporting the efforts of our volunteers. Speaking of volunteers, we have a series of serious work parties coming up in late March and early April and I want to encourage all our members to take part in these events. Not only do we depend on the time from the members but these work parties are a great way to meet other members and to be an active club member. If these work parties are not well attended our costs increase and these costs are passed on to the membership – so be sure to get involved!
My thanks to Cliff Taylor for working hard at upgrading the Website – I think it has come a long way. If you haven’t checked it out lately be sure to call it up and have a look. This is an important feature of our club and Cliff has spent a lot of time and energy putting it together. The grey water issue Terry covered in February’s Trident is one we should all be concerned with – please take the time to send a copy of the letter to the minister as requested. Check our website, click on members for info on the letter. We have a busy couple of months at the Club and I
hope to see all of you at the various functions.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE MARCH BOARD MEETING
• Commodore Grant Allen confirmed that leases for Snug Cove & Silva Bay have been renewed. • Vice Commodore Wayne Wood advised that Sailpast Plans were underway. • Council of BC Yacht Club Rep Herb Buchanan reported that preliminary plans are being made by
Transport Canada regarding restricted areas during the 2010 Olympics. This will include Coal Harbour, False Creek and portions of Howe Sound. Herb also reported that changes are being made to the Marine Weather Broadcasts on VHF. Details elsewhere in this Trident.
• Shore Captain Chris Nelson confirmed that at least 20 members had signed up for the Shore Work Party. Also, the renovations to the Ladies washroom in the Clubhouse are complete.
• Safety Director Frank Poratto presented detailed plans for Safety Weekend. We will move forward with Compulsory BYC Courtesy Inspections of club vessels by club appointed inspectors since the Coast Guard is no longer providing this service. Volunteer inspectors will be screened carefully for experience and knowledge. A full orientation / training session, conducted by Transport Canada, will be held in order to bring inspectors up to speed on their increased responsibilities.
• Treasurer Gord Argue presented plans for upgrading the office computer and software which was approved by the board.
• Fleet Captain Steve Goldie advised that plans are well underway for the August BYC False Creek Raft Up. • Maintenance Director Stan Shepherd reported that Modifications to the Tidal Grid have been made
including: -West grid swing arms completed and tested/Temporary bunk system installed for the west grid. -West grid bunks replaced (bugs) and longer bunks installed/ Platforms and hoses replaced in the grid. -Signage for the grid moved to a more prominent place/New platform for second power washer built. - Also, all electrical services have been checked & repairs made where required.
IN MEMORIAM
BYC member Earl Dodson passed away on March 19. Celebration of life will be held at his home at 2990 St. Kilda Avenue, North Vancouver on April 13th at 4:00PM. Our condolences to Earl’s wife Suzanne and the Dodson Family.

IRISH PUB NIGHT
Thank you to all those who attended Irish Night. What the small numbers lacked was made up by their enthusiasm. Thanks to Tom & Ingrid Simpson and Darlene Wood, the guests outnumbered the members! The band was great, the food delicious, the Pub games entertaining and the prizes abundant. It takes many volunteers to organize such an event. I especially thank Jule & David Duke who did the lion’s share of the work to make this such a successful evening. There are some commemorative BYC Beer Mugs and BYC Burgee windshield or glassware stickers still available. These items will be turned over to regalia.

every year, those that do not risk losing club privileges.
PLEASE BE PREPARED – The owner or spouse MUST BE ABOARD FOR THE INSPECTION AND YOU ARE REQUIRED TO HAVE YOUR REGISTRATION AND PROOF OF LIABILITY UNSURANCE (1 million minimum) ON HAND. Proper care of your flotation devices
Treat your flotation device as an investment and take good care of it. Devices that are ripped or in poor condition are not considered approved. Lifesaving equipment should never be kneeled on, sat on or used as a fender for your boat. Follow these tips:
• Check its buoyancy regularly in a pool or by wading out to waist-deep water and bending your knees to
see how well you float.
• Ensure that straps, buckles and zippers are clean and in good working order.
• Tug on straps to ensure they are well attached and there is no sign of wear.
• Dry your device in open air and avoid direct heat sources.
• Store it in a dry, well-ventilated, easily accessible place.
• Do not dry clean. Use mild soap and running water to clean.

SAFETY INSPECTIONS Over the last couple of years I have been involved in performing inspections and most members are very pleasant and prepared. Some however, feel that it is unnecessary and might be a witch hunt. This is not the case...we want all vessels at our locations to meet a minimal level of safety and if you change your perspective you would see that it could save you hundreds if not thousands of dollars. The Police departments are now using the Contraventions Act to enforce laws on the water...they can write tickets just like when you get pulled over on the highways. Here are some of the potential fines. • License numbers marked incorrectly; Unlicensed boat $55 • Speeding $100 • Not enough flares, oars, paddles, anchor $155 each missing • Competency requirements (license) $100-250 • Age/horsepower restrictions $250 • Missing bailer or manual pump (boat not over 5.5m) $200 • PFDs, lifejackets, bailer, manual pump, fire extinguishers $205 each missing • Failure to switch off electrical equipment when re-fuelling $200 • Failure to operate blower for 4 minutes before starting $200
These are just a few there are many more but you get the point.
Safe boating means different things to different people...being a Professional Mariner and a Safe Boating Educator through the Canadian Yachting Association and Canadian Power and Sail Squadrons I can tell you that being a safe boater is not one course or ten courses it is your “ATTITUDE” combined with proper training and practice. There are many couples on the water these days and I wonder how many have thought about getting their un-conscious spouse back aboard if it ever were to happen to them. If you haven’t taken a Safe boating course be sure to take one. If you have taken a CPS course and feel you have forgotten a lot you can come back and take the course again for no charge if you are a member of any Squadron. Last but not least, if you do not have your PCOC card be sure to get it before September 15, 2009. I will be at Safety weekend offering the PCOC exam for our club members.

THE BOATS OF BYC Welcome back to our docks the Euphemia II a beautiful classic yacht that will celebrate her 81st Birthday in May. She is now located in A-27. Below is a great report on Euphemia by her owner, Mike O’Brien
EUPHEMIA II AT HOLE IN THE WALL (photo by Grant Allen) Euphemia II was launched in May 1928 by the Schertzer Bros. of Seattle. In June 1928 she was first in her class in the Capital to Capital predicted log race from Olympia, WA to Juneau AK. She went on to win, either overall or in her class, the next six races, albeit that the last one was the “chicken race” from Olympia to Victoria.
Little is known about the Schertzer Brothers, although there are several pictures of their boat yard near Shilshole. There are at least six of their yachts still in active duty in the Pacific Northwest, most of them in the 44’ range with two at 50’.
Euphemia is one of the 50 foot yachts and she has a narrow beam of 10’7” while drawing 4’6” of water. She is powered by her second engine, a 120hp Volvo TMD50 diesel. At 1600 RPM’s she cruises at 9 knots and burns about two gallons of diesel per hour. Euphemia is heavily built of inch and a half Port Orford cedar on three by three Oak frames with three quarter inch ceiling throughout. Her cabin structure is Burmese teak while her decks are Port Orford with teak margins.
In 2006 we entered Euphemia in the Classic Yacht Association show at the Bell Street Pier in Seattle. At that time we were delighted to welcome Henry Seidelhuber and his family aboard. Henry’s father commissioned Euphemia and Henry, a twelve year old at the time, was aboard at her launching. Henry brought with him all of the trophies won by Euphemia for her predicted log races, as well as the 1928 annotated charts used in the races. Euphemia is currently the flagship of the Canadian fleet of the Classic Yacht Association and, in 2010 will be the flagship of the International Classic Yacht Association.
Peggy and I continue to enjoy both the ongoing restoration and particularly cruising in style aboard our Euphemia.

SAGAS OF SAMMY SEAGULL
David and Jule Duke saved a bit by celebrating their 28th at Rose and Ingrid’s successful January dinner bash at the club. Imagine dancing in a walking cast! The entertainment was great once again and Clay, the entertainer, scanned the crowd to find the big tipper. It was at Sailpast a few years back that Michael Nex proved to be quite loose with his cash whenever he heard Neil Diamond. It wasn’t long before Clay swung into nearly Neil and it wasn’t long before Michael’s first fiver was offered. Clay said last time he bought a condo from the tip money. When Clay went into his Dean Martin routine with the full glass splashing all about, it was Graham Smith on the receiving end. Good thing it was water. When Rose arrived to set up the dinner she could not find any decent tea towels so off she went to buy some. You can imagine her reaction when she caught Neal Tyldsley throwing the new tea towel to the floor and using his foot to wipe up a spill. “I’m a bachelor you know.” “Well, I can see why.” Early Dawn skipper, Dave Cassells was a little sensitive to being caught opening and consuming his door prize at the dinner bash so Sammy decided not to notice. At least Sammy decided not to notice until Dave cornered Sammy at the Superbowl saying, “You better print all the facts!” Since Sammy seldom prints all the facts he decided to print none. Steve Goldie didn’t show up at the dinner/dance. Something about the dance part intimidated him. He said he wouldn’t show up for Superbowl either. “What and watch football without 60 inch high def?” It wasn’t all that long ago our club 54” TV was big enough. The Superbowl dockparty was a good one. It was the final seconds in the 1st half. Arizona was threatening to score and knock Alfredo from winning $100. All he could hope for was an interception or a
fumble because any score would go against Alfredo. Then it happened! An interception worth $100! Oh, wait a minute, that guy’s running down the field and if he makes it all the way Alfredo still loses! Touchdown! A video review…and touchdown good. Alfredo loses and Alex Maier wins. Alfredo claims he had a dinner to go to and wasn’t leaving in a huff. But he did leave. Well…guess who won the third quarter $100. Yep, Alfredo. Claims there was only $80 in the envelope. If true, there is some justice after all. Superbowl was where Tommy Simpson decided to donate a keg of foamy Heineken to the group. It had frozen and thawed a few times in Taña’s lazarette over the winter and Tommy was curious whether it would still work. It made foam. Good foam and lots of it but eventually the foam became beer to reward the patient ones. It wasn’t on board the boat or even around the club so Sammy won’t name the skipper, but the story is too good to pass up. The A-dock skipper’s wife went to Germany for family reasons and left him to fend on his own. He went to work one morning and shortly after he arrived he received an e-mail from a fellow worker. When he clicked on the e-mail it came alive with Glen Campbell singing Rhinestone Cowboy. Seems our skipper rummaged through the closet in the dark looking for a pair of jeans and came up with his wife’s jeans. Jeans trimmed across the butt with rhinestones.
