Chateau Reignac (pg. 2)

Est. 1948

March 2011

Page 2: March 2011

Last month we lunched at Chateau Reignac with proprietor Yves Vatelot recalling the stunt he pulled off a few months ago at B-21: Chateaux Latour, Margaux, Haut Brion and Reignac - blind! True story. I was there. Even

for a confident vigneron this was a bold stunt and an expensive one: open your wine and three first-growths, (all 2006) and pour all four blind to a roomful of buyers. Yves and his Chateau Reignac, which is classed

simply as Bordeaux Superieur, had the guts. And the glory. He insists his wine is a great growth no matter what the maps and classifications currently say. Yves has run this test before. Reignac always

held its own and sometimes even won. 2006 Reignac is rich with Merlot, a deep, intense purple, with a sweet nose full of berries, flowers and earth and a big mouthful heavy with black fruits

and chocolate. Remarkable stuff. Convinced me. Parker too (91 pts WA). The vines are in Saint Loubes where the Dordogne joins the Garonne; it was

revitalized 20 years ago by Yves who has a passion for quality over quantity. He cut the yields and brought in Michel Rolland. It’s been

rising ever since, I grabbed the ‘04 and ‘05 as well as the ‘06. And ‘09 futures too. I know Reignac will find a regular home on your table too.

2004 Reignac SALE: 1499 Reg: 1999

“Superripe aromas of black raspberry, leather and smoke. Sweet, fat, broad and serious; big and mouthfilling. Chocolatey-rich and full of fresh fruit. Finishes with big, sweet tannins and building length.” 87-90ST #FX04REIGAE

2005 Reignac 2999

“...notes of graphite, black currant, some sweet cherries, and spice box. It is a medium to full-bodied wine with beautiful concentration, decent acidity, and ripe tan-nin. A sleeper of the vintage!” 90WA, 90WS #FX05REIGAE

2006 Reignac

SALE: 1999 Reg: 2999

“...boasts a bouquet of sweet creme de cassis, spring flowers, toasty oak, and back-ground forest floor. Medium to full-bodied, richly fruity, and pure with an alluring texture as well as length, it should drink nicely for 5-10 years.” 91WA #FX06REIGAE

2008 Reignac *Futures* 1999

“As good as the outstanding 2005, the 2008 transcends its appellation with its display of power, deep, dark fruits, spice box, and cedar. Pure and dense with ripe tannins as well as the vintage’s remarkable fresh-ness and precision, it should drink well for 6-8 years.” 90-93WA #FX08REIGAE

2009 Reignac 375ml *Futures* 1299

750ml *Futures* 2499

“Pretty blueberry and coffee bean character. Full-bodied, with well-integrated tannins and a medium finish. A beauti-ful Reignac. Whether it will ultimately be better than the 2005, we will see.” 88-91WS #FX09REIGAE

“Refreshing and vibrant, offering tangerine and lime-tinged nectarine and green apple flavors that keep sailing through

the long, generous and lively finish. Drink now.”

93 Points The Wine Spectator

“This is a carnivore’s masterpiece, even the WS barbarians agree. I always liked this lusty GSM from Kermit Lynch territory in southern France. It’s a go-to when we throw a fresh mammoth on the fire. The 2008 is a big step toward civilization, all the berries and spice plus a luscious texture, better than saber-tooth fur.”

- Robert Sprentall, Proprietor

“Who sets the benchmark for New Zealand? For all the new names and loud talk, the great one is Villa Maria. To me they’ve always made a fine New Zealand Sauv Blanc and should: they started 50 years ago and make seven SB cuvees. In 2009 they achieved the tops with a small selection, carefully thinned, night-harvested and kept on the lee. The Cellar Selection has that crisp grapefruit and kiwi yet more flesh. This is lively and lush, juicy stuff while still rich.”

- Robert Sprentall, Proprietor

When the blind tastings were finished, Spanish and French tasters were astonished by a great new name, Atauta stood up to Chateau Latour and Vega Sicilia. Atauta is located in a cool, high corner in the far east of the Ribera del Duero, where the Tempranillo vines are very old and ungrafted. That’s almost unheard of! Add very new energy in French winemaker Bertrand Sourdais. He wanted to farm these old vines biodynamically and rescue the best of their tiny berries. The dense extract of berries and black cherries and clean minerality is a wholly new flavor. It wowed Wine Spectator ‘s Top 100 panel. Maximum excitement, minimum price. - Robert Sprentall, Proprietor

“Suave, with effusive spicy notes on the aroma and lush, fresh flavors of raspberry and red plum that turn quite creamy. The luscious finish features plenty of snap to its ginger and white pepper notes. Drink now through 2014.”

91 PointsThe Wine Spectator, Top 100

“What a beauty! Masculine aromas of black fruits, cola and oak sit there begging to be sipped, while the lush, deep palate is home to dense blackberry, cassis and chocolate flavors. Lively but dense, with tannins, plenty of oak and a finish of black pepper, fudge and vanilla. Complex and exciting Spanish wine. Needs time; best from 2012 through 2018.”

2009 D’ANDEZON LA GRANACHA VV (CÔTES DU RHÔNE) ............1199 “The best issue yet of this wine. Very refined, Granacha shows a silky and fine texture, intensity of flavor with some kirsh like qualities and fresh herbes de provence. The flavors are lifting and fresh, the acids present but moderate and the tannins very fine and the wine’s finish persistent. This is an excellent value.” 91RB, 90WA FRANGR09AE

2005 CHATEAU CHAPELLE SEGUR (MONTAGNE ST-EMILION) .......1799

“70% Merlot, 20% Cab S and 10% Cab F, this wine shows a ner-vous energy, cut and delineation attributed to the limestone sites. The texture of the wine is supple but sinewy still, the black cherry and red plummy flavors are lifted by a mouthwatering acidity and fine tannin structure...” 91RB FX05CHAPAE

2007 BODEGA NORTON MALBEC RESERVE (ARGENTINA) .............1399

“Very ripe and very primal still, delivering a large core of velvety-textured raspberry, fig and boysenberry fruit that is liberally laced with dark toast, pastis and roasted vanilla. Should settle in nicely with modest cellaring, as the structure is dense, but polished and integrated. Drink now through 2011.” 90WS -ANOMA07BE

2007 SANTA LUCIA MELOGRANO (ITALY) .................................1399 1699

“Offers an absolutely delicious mouthful of wine bursting with ber-ries, flowers and subtle herbs. This cask-aged, jammy red delivers quite a bit of pleasure in a hearty, slightly rustic – but pleasing – style. Best of all, it is a terrific value. 2010-2013.” 90SR, 90RAS, 88WA IASACM07AE

2007 RODNEY STRONG CABERNET SAUVIGNON (SONOMA) .........1199

“Tart, deep red fruits dominate the palate while subtle oak offers excellent balance without overpowering. Tannins are present, but don’t storm in, making this wine very ready-to-drink, but also quite agreeable to short-term cellaring.” 90+SDR, 89WE CSTRCS07AE

2006 MARKHAM MERLOT (NAPA) .....................................................1399

“Its caramelly oak overlay and its likeable fruit start its aromas out nicely, and the progression in the mouth from supple to firm is well-supported by that fruit. Enjoy it now or in a few years.” 88CG CMRKME06AE

2004 CHATEAU REIGNAC (BORDEAUX SUPERIEUR) .......................1699

“Medium ruby. Superripe aromas of black raspberry, leather and smoke. Sweet, fat, broad and serious; big and mouthfilling. Chocolatey-rich and full of fresh fruit. Finishes with big, sweet tannins and building length. Reportedly from a yield of just 31 hectoliters per hectare, and partly fermented in barrels.” 87-90ST FX04REIGAE

2006 CASTELLO MONASTERO CHIANTI CLASSICO (TUSCANY) .......1399 “Shows Indian spices and ripe berries on the nose. Opens up beau-tifully. Full-bodied, yet refined and very polished. A long, lovely red. Best after 2010.” 91WS, 91SR ITMOCH06AE

2007 MONTE ANTICO ROSSO (TUSCANY) ..........................................999

Deep ruby in color, its bouquet of leather, earth, herbs, black cherries, lico-rice and plums is confirmed on the medium to full-bodied palate – round, spicy, elegant, attractively fruity and extremely versatile with any fare from pasta or risotto, to meat, fowl and cheese. 2006 vintage was in Wine Spectator’s Top 100 ITMTAN07AE

2009 JANASSE CÔTES DU RHÔNE ROUGE (FRANCE) .....................1399

“Racy and dark, featuring a beam of crushed currant, blackberry and graphite notes that pushes through the toast-tinged finish. Good acidity keeps it going. Drink now.” 89WS FRJACR09BE

2009 DR. P. BERGWEILER NOBLE HOUSE RIESLING ................ 999

“This displays a rich, supple texture and mouthwatering flavors of peach cobbler, cream, apricot and spice. The lush finish is long and focused, with touches of honey. Drink now through 2015.” 90WS GMBERI09AE

2009 SHAYA VERDEJO OLD VINES (RUEDA, SPAIN) ................1399

“Medium straw-colored, if offers up an alluring aroma of baking spices, spring flowers, and peach. On the palate it has a creamy texture, vibrant acidity, and intense flavors leading to a lengthy, fruit-filled finish.” 91WA SRESHA09AE

2009 RODNEY STRONG CHARDONNAY (SONOMA) .................. 899

“Bright lemon and apple aromas mingle with hints of toasty bar-rel complexity, and on the palate, pear and pineapple with spice and refreshing acidity will have you coming back for another glass.” CSTRCH09AE

2009 BURGANS ALBARINO (RIAS BAIXAS, SPAIN) ..................1199

“...with a lovely bouquet of white flowers, hazelnut, peach pit, and mineral. On the palate it is surprisingly complex for its bargain price with a viscosity bordering on opulence. If you enjoy Albarino, this is one to buy by the case.” 90WA SRBBUR09AE

2009 KIM CRAWFORD SAUVIGNON BLANC (NEW ZEALAND) .1199

“Quality at Kim Crawford has remained steady. The 2009 Sauvignon Blanc maintains its reliably herbal scent even while featuring hints of melon and fig. It’s on the ripe side, hinting at stone fruit and honey but staying crisp and focused on the fin-ish” 89WE, 89WS, 88ST NZKCSB09AE

2010 BRANCOTT SAUVIGNON BLANC (NEW ZEALAND) .......... 899

“Aromas of ripe gooseberry meld with tropical melon and grape-fruit notes. This wine displays full fruit intensity with capsicum and gooseberry flavors. It is well-balanced and displays crisp, vivacious acidity. 88SR NZBRSB10AE

2008 P. PERNOT BOURGOGNE BLANC (FRANCE)...1799 (16.99 btc)“The rich and creamy entry is followed by characteristic Puligny minerality and very nice acidity giving brightness at the finish. Overall, a delight, easy to drink and lovely. Pernot’s Bourgogne always contains a fair amount of declassified Puligny Montrach-et, and it shows. This is delicious and very easy to like!” 90RAS, 90SR, 90RB FWPPBB08AE

2008 FREI BROS. CHARDONNAY RES. (R.R.V.) ......1299 (11.69 btc)This Chardonnay It has a lush texture and deep, layered flavors that express the rich essence of the Russian River Valley. Soft and complex, reflecting the region’s cool climate with flavors of orange zest and green apple. Hints of butter and toast round out the palate. CFRECH08AE

GLORIA FERRER BRUT (SONOMA) .................................................1299

“A wonderfully drinkable sparkling wine that appeals immediately for its balanced texture and rich flavors. Easy to like for its array of raspberries, limes, vanilla, toast and yeast. The sour lees note is nicely balanced with the sweet liqueur of dosage.” 90WE CGLOSPNVEE

2009 CLIFFORD BAY SAUVIGNON BLANC (NEW ZEALAND) .............899

“Pale yellow in color, this wine conveys a bouquet of fresh mango and lemon zest. The palate is as tropical as Carmen Miranda’s head-dress, papayas and mangoes comingle with lemon grass and a touch of minerality in this lively, crisp, and beautifully-balanced treat.” 91RAS, 91SR, 91SDR, 90SS NZCBSB09AE

You may see a few new initials, such as AWC, in our Down Under ratings. To explain James Halliday and his Aus-tralian Wine Companion (AWC), let me put it in Oz perspective: “That Robert Parker bloke, he’s the James Halliday of North America.”

His voice and knowledge of Australia over the last thirty years is unmatched. He knows Oz wineries and vineyards in a detail and breadth well beyond the biggest exporters. Ask him about any vintage and he will parse the year into a dozen appellations in each of the six states and various terrritories. He can name a dozen top wineries for each varietal in each division. He proves singlehandedly that Australian wines are more than newfound values: They are serious, di-verse and longstanding. How serious? Halliday regularly recommends holding Aussie wines ten years even twenty, before drinking.

2009 Mario Marengo Dolcetto d'alba REG 17.99 SALE 15.99“Incredibly delicious. Rich and generous, this ample, broad-shouldered Dolcetto impresses for the breadth and richness of its dark fruit. 2009 Cavallotto Dolcetto d'Alba Vigna Scot REG 16.99 SALE 14.99“...flows with gorgeous dark fruit, tar, licorice and underbrush. As always, this is a beautiful, supple Dolcetto with superb purity in its fruit, beautifully articulated aromatics and terrific overall balance. It is highly recommended. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2014. It's tough to go wrong with pretty much anything from Cavallotto these days. The estate's entry-level wines offer nearly as much pleasure as the higher-end wines, but at far more soothing prices.” 90WA, 90SR IPCADO09AE

2009 Luigi Pira Dolcetto d'Alba REG 16.99 SALE 13.99“The 2009 Dolcetto d’Alba reveals a precise fabric of dark fruit in a soft, seamless style that emphasizes textural richness over varietal character. 2009 Giovanni Corino Dolcetto d'Alba REG 16.99 SALE 14.99“The 2009 Dolcetto d’Alba is a pretty, feminine wine with gorgeous varietal red fruit and a refined personality. The mid-weight style is classic La Morra. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2012.” 88WA IPCRDO09AE

2009 Boschis Dolcetto di Dogliani Pianezzo REG 14.99 SALE 12.99“Red fruit aromas lead to a intense flavors that are just beginning to round out. This should drink well over the next five years as it gains complexity and softens. Even though Dolcetto is suitable for the whole meal, this type of Dolcetto is particularly recommended for hors d'oeuvres, pasta and rice dishes, and cold cuts.” 88+SR IPBODO09AE

2009 Albino Rocca Dolcetto d'Alba Vignalunga REG 15.99 SALE 13.99“From 25-year-old vines this full-fruited Dolcetto is round and rich with excellent acidity and persistence. The finish goes on and on and begs another sip.” 88SR IPALDO09BE

Our Saturday Piedmont tasting illustrated the greatness of the 2006 Barolos. The wines are huge, complex and have long lives ahead of them. Clearly they are built for the cellar. The surprise of the tasting though was how lip-smacking, tasty and just completely delicious the 2009 Dolcettos are. These wines feature bright acidity and perfectly ripe fruit that shines through unfettered by new oak. They are also fantastic values. My favorites are 2009 Mario Marengo Dolcetto d’alba (90WA), 2009 Giovanni Corino Dolcetto d’Alba (88WA), and 2009 Cavallotto Dolcetto d’Alba Vigna Scot (90WA). This is the best vintage of Dolcettos from Alba I’ve tasted and these are incredibly tasty wines especially when paired with fresh, primary foods . Check out our complete selection of 2009 Dolcettos here.

92WA | 2006 CASTELLO DI AMA CHIANTI CLASSICO 2999The 2006 Chianti Classico Castello di Ama flows with the essence of sweet perfumed fruit. Red cherries, raspberries, flowers and spices are intermingled with suggestions of tobacco, licorice and earthiness that linger in the background. The wine reveals incredible length, and sweet, silky tannins that caress the palate all the way through to the close. In a word: Awesome. There’s not much else to say except that the Chianti Classico Castello di Ama is highly recommended. Castello di Ama is 80% Sangiovese plus Malvasia Nera, Merlot and Canaiolo. B A R B E R ABarbera is one of Italy's most compelling young wines to drink with food, as it offers gobs of fruit, dark purple color, excel-

lent acidity and low tannin. When grown in the hill country of Piedmont around Alba and Asti it can be something truly mag-nificent. Vietti and La Spinetta are masters at demonstrating the greatness that Babera can achieve. Vietti in particular grows Barbera in vineyards usually reserved for Barolo. From our collection below you can find satisfaction at all price levels. Don't be afraid to try those under $20 either. They are among the best values in Italian wine and their tastiness transcends scores.

“offers up plums, dark cherries, herbs and flowers on a rich, mid-weight frame, revealing plenty of length and fine overall balance. The bright, focused acidity of Barbera from Asti comes through on the finish, and the wine is best enjoyed at

the dinner table. 2010-2015. 89WA, 88WS IPSPBA07AE

2006 La Spinetta Barbera d'Alba Gallina 3999

“What ripeness this shows, with dried red fruits and sliced orange on the nose. Full-bodied, with very good acidity and a long, flavorful finish.” 91WS, 89WA IPSPBA06BE

2007 Pio Cesare Barbera d'Alba Fides 2999

“one of the best versions of this wine I can remember tasting... over time layers of ripe, perfumed fruit emerge with superb clarity and precision. The Fides re-veals gorgeous persistence on the palate and terrific overall balance. Ideally it is best opened in advance or given another year or two in bottle, either of which will help soften the tannins. 2012-2017.” 91+WA IPPCBA07AE

2006 Sandrone Barbera d’Alba 3699

“Cassis, blackberry, violet and bitter chocolate on the nose. An explosion of juicy, spicy black fruits in the mouth, with superb ripeness perfectly leavened by strong acidity. The very long finish hints at shoe polish and leather.” 91ST, 90WA IPSABA06AE

2007 Vietti Barbera d'Asti Tre Vigne 1799 SALE 1599

“Smoke, tar, licorice and amarena cherries are some of the nuances that emerge... Clean, mineral notes frame the long, silky finish. This over-achieving, juicy Barbera is totally delicious and a great value as well, in fact, it is one of Italy’s finest wines for under $20. 2009-2012.” 90WA IPVIBA07AE

2006 Vietti Barbera d'Asti la Crena 3999

“A dense, brooding effort loaded with mineral-infused dark fruit, violets, graphite, flow-ers and French oak. This is an especially seamless yet mid-weight La Crena built on elegance rather than power, with an impeccably clean, polished finish that rounds things out. Usually I prefer Barbera on the young side, but La Crena truly sings around age ten or so. It remains one of the most under-the-radar wines in Piedmont. 2012-2021.” 93WA, 95RAS, 92SR IPVIBA06AE

2007 Vietti Barbera d'Alba Scarrone 4799 SALE 3999

“An insanely beautiful, layered Barbera. Silky tannins frame a core of perfumed dark fruit, spices, licorice and minerals. This opulent yet impeccably balanced Scarrone possesses awesome richness and tons of style. Sweet floral notes ring out on the finish. 2012-2022.” 93WA, 91WE IPVIBA07BE

2007 Vietti Barbera d'Alba Scarrone Vigna Vecchia 7999

“...flows onto the palate with a stunning and totally irresistible expression of dark, round fruit. Tar, smoke, licorice and new leather linger on the round, polished finish. The Vigna Vecchia remains exceedingly young, but it is a spectacular effort and should develop very nicely in bottle. This is a wonderful, sensual and compelling Barbera from Vietti. Sadly there are just under 3,600 bottles to go around. 2012-2021.” 94WA, 95JS IPVIBA07DE

Does anyone remember Y2K, really? The shenanigans were plenty, running for the hills with sacks of cash, buying new computers and backing everything up thrice. What wine drinkers remember is 2000 Bordeaux. It was the vintage

bought as futures by more first time futures buyers than any before. And time has proven them to have made shrewd purchases too. Robert Parker tasted many 2000s in the middle of last year and we have provided his reassessment where available, his being the most renowned of Bordeaux palates and his scores being the most up to the moment, for your consideration.

“Tasting this last month, I was reminded what it is that distinguishes wines able to evolve from

those that only age or simply grow old: refine-ment. As a wine of substance gains grace there is a fusion or a melding of the ele-ments -- varietals, acidity, tannin and terroir -- that begin to harmonize and surrender

their individuality to the develop-ment of the wine. This Grand Vin

is quite cherry now and ready to be experienced.”

Georges Duboeuf, the largest Beaujolais bottler by far, has been called “the prince of Beaujolais” and “the Beaujolais king.” He is a négociant who produces more than 25 million cases of wine annually. Duboeuf is almost single-handedly responsible for the annual Beau-jolais nouveau phenomenon, and has won awards for his wines. His wine labels are easily recognizeable by their use of colorful flower images and the distinctive Duboeuf insignia.

More and more great wines come from Ribera del Duero, and they aren’t breaking our wallets either! We know Emilio Moro has always delivered consistent quality at great prices, but now two more estates are making names for themselves: Resalte and O. Fournier. Both are excellent examples of modern Ribera del Duero. We love them so much we asked them to join us on Saturday, March 5th for a complimentary tasting focused soley on wines from Ribera del Duero. José Manuel O. Fournier & Maria Karkazi of Resalte will be here for 1-5pm in store and will then join us for a dinner at Currents in Tarpon Springs. Make your reservations now. Carménère is to Chile, what Malbec is to Argentina. Originating in Bordeaux, it is the most dominantly planted grape in Chile. Carménère grapes look very similar to Merlot, which is why for years Chilean winemakers thought they were bottling Merlot. In fact, if you’ve ever tasted a Chilean Merlot prior to 1994, chances are you were actually drinking Carménère. In 1994, Jean Michel Boursiquot discovered that these were actually the “Lost Grapes of Bordeaux”. Carménère is a very complex grape to grow in the vineyard because it is slow to mature. Occasionally in the aromas you will pick up notes of green pepper or earth or grass. When mature it will have red or black fruit aromas such as cherries, strawberries, mulberries and raspberries. In the mouth, you will get all the berries from the nose plus some chocolate & spices. It is a very easy to drink wine that goes well with food. While Chile has coined Carménère as its national emblematic varietal, Italy is experimenting with it as well and the quality in both countries is growing!

2008 Vina Calina Carménère 899

“This wine is proof that good wine gets made in the vineyards. The aromas are intense with ripe berries, smoked bacon, sweet cotton candy, "grandma’s spice box" and hints of vanilla. The tan-nins are well-integrated, providing the underlying structure to support the wine’s opulent fruit. The finish is medium-long and elegant with spice and hints of oak." 2009 Errazuriz Carménère 999

S A U V I G N O N B L A N CSauvignon Blanc is grown successfully around the world. It prefers moderate to cooler sites with ample sunshine so

grapes enjoy a long, slow growing season to ripen the delicious aromas and flavors we associate with Sauvignon Blanc. However, due to the effects of climate, it can taste vastly different from one end of the globe to the other. Below are some of my favorite contrasting styles which vary on several dimensions such as concentration, body and finish.

Below is a selection of Cabernets that any self-respecting fan of the genre should try at least once. From a number of heralded 07s to a couple can’t miss 06s, these wines make ideal partners for charred steak and good company.

2007 Marietta Cabernet Sauvignon (Alexander) 1999

“Quite ripe, dripping with black fruit juices. Modest, sweet tannins sustain a silky and spicy wine that teems with black cherries and pomegranate be-neath ribbons of clove and herb…the Marietta blossoms into a huge, lush wine…Bright and approachable, this stunning, fruit-driven treat is ready to rock your face off." 92+SDR CMRACS07AE

2007 Sequoia Grove Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa) 2999

“I don’t know how the big guns overlooked the lush 2007 Sequoia Grove, but B-21 gets it. The wine’s brilliant focus promises years of pleasure not just a youthful fling. Gobs of blackberry and spice on a perfect frame, yet sleek and slippery. This ought to be a reserve and cost twice as much." 93RAS, 92+SDR CSEQCS07BE

2007 Respite Cabernet Reichel (Alexander) 4999 4499

“Possesses sweeter fruit, greater volume, more depth, and a full-bodied style revealing lots of camphor, creme de cassis, licorice, tobacco leaf, and a hint of graphite. It is a full-bodied, beautifully textured, pure, elegant…enjoy over the next 15+ years.” 93WA, 93SDR CRESCS07AE

2007 Antica Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa) 3999

“A rich, sumptuous bouquet of licorice, crème de cassis, and smoky oak. This opulent, fleshy, full-bodied wine exhibits beautiful purity and concen-trated fruit. It should age nicely for 15-20 years…” 94WE, 94WA CANTCS07AE

2006 Turnbull Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa) 3499 (29.99 btc)“Its ample oak is always subordinate to elements of cassis and ripe cher-ries, and its integral tannins provide solid varietal spice without being too tough or abrasive…[drink] over the next five to ten years”. 92CG, 90WE, 89WA CTUNCS06AE

2007 Turnbull Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa) 3499

“Incense, forest flowers, black fruits, and crushed rock, jump from the glass of this inky purple-colored wine. Full-bodied, dense, and voluptuously textured…should drink well young but age 15-10 years.” 93+SDR, 92WA, 91WS CTUNCS07AE

2007 Edge Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa) 1999

“Well structured and dry, with lush flavors of blackberries, currants, herbs and cedar that are wrapped into firm, ripe tannins. Should develop ad-ditional complexity through 2014." 90WE CEDGCS07AE

2006 Groth Cabernet Sauvignon (Oakville) 3999

“Tightly wound, firmly tannic, full-bodied and dense. Chewy and extracted, this is a touch rustic and cedary, but also deep, complex and concentrat-ed…Best from 2010 through 2017.” 92SDR, 88WS CGROCS06AE

2007 Groth Cabernet Sauvignon (Oakville) 4499 3799

"Big and lush with huge gobs of fruit in the aroma and flavor. The texture of the wine is soft and supple, typical of Cabernet Sauvignons grown in our area of the Oakville AVA. Patience during bottle aging will reward the “stew-ard” with an outstanding bottle over the next 10 to 15 years." 92+SDR CGROCS07AE

2007 Rodney Strong Cabernet Sauvignon (Sonoma) 1299

“A dry, somewhat tannic wine of great elegance. Easy to like for its bal-anced flavors of blackberries and black currants, with gentle influences of oak.” 90+SDR, 89WE CSTRCS07AE

In 1881, pioneer Jim Kinney observed feral horses flourishing in the lush, knee-high grasses of a small sanctuary in eastern

Washington and remarked that “the area offers excellent forage and compara-tive isolation...This is surely a horse heaven!” That oasis today plays host to a handful of wineries, including Colum-bia Crest, whose H3 label consistently cranks out smooth, well-structured wines perfectly suited for immediate drinking. The ’07 Cab graced The Buzz as Bob’s pick early last year and the stellar ‘07 Merlot made both my staff selection and Wine Spectator’s Top 100 of 2010. The ‘08s are showing quite well right now with the Merlot again atop my list. Horse Heaven? Seems pretty sweet for us as well.

2008 Columbia Crest Chardonnay H3 Horse Heaven 13.99 (10% off btc) “It gives up aromas of buttered popcorn, pear, spiced apple, and mineral leading to a smooth-textured, ripe Chardonnay with very good volume and concentration…” 89WA, 89WS, 88SDR WSCCCH08BE

2008 Columbia Crest Merlot H3 Horse Heaven 13.99 (10% off btc) “Ripe, supple and seductive, delivering a plush mouthful of red berry, floral and pomegran-ate flavors, swirling effectively through the deftly balanced finish. Drink now through 2016.” 90WS, 90SDR WSCCME08AE

2008 Columbia Crest Cabernet H3 Horse Heaven 13.99 (10% off btc) “This intense, fruit-forward Cabernet Sauvignon delivers aromas of cherries and huckle-berry jam, with a perfect balance of earthy tannins, great focus in the mid-palate and a soft, smooth cocoa finish.” 89SDR, 88SR WSCCH308AE

2006 Chateau Reignac (Bordeaux Superieur) .................... SALE: 2499 2999

“What a mouthful! Chocolate, sour cherries, and berries wrapped in very soft tannins. This wine dares to chal-lenge the first-growths even though it’s in Saint-Loubes, a village that 1855 forgot. Big mistake. When I was there a few weeks ago, 20-years of revamping with the help of Michel Rolland has made the chateau a show-place and its Left Bank vineyards shine. This is big stuff and an instant charmer. Were it classed as it should be,

you’d pay three times the price. If this is only Bordeaux Superieur, put the accent on Su-PER.” FX06REIGAE

2007 Groth Cabernet Sauvignon (Oakville, California)..... SALE: 3799 4499

“Originally planted by Silver Oak founders Justin Meyer and Ray Duncan, Groth’s 121-acre Oakville plot was destined for success. As such, Groth’s 1985 Reserve Cab holds the distinction as California’s first 100-point wine. I was instantly smitten by their ‘06 at a tasting early last year. A seamless, fruity Oakville Cab with insane concentration for under $40? Pretty slick. Well, step back and make way for the lauded ’07 vintage. A couple bucks cheaper than its predecessor and even deeper concentration, this wine - 80% Cab and 20% Merlot - is lush, elegant, and remarkably smooth. Twenty months on French Oak impart a sweet vanilla character to a Cabernet bred for rare, charbroiled beef. Call the fire marshal and roll out the grill, bitches!” CGROCS07AE

2009 Evodia (Calatayud, Spain) .......................................... SALE: 899 999

“Many of you tried the 2008 Evodia and liked it. Well 2009 is here and even better, and now the critics are aware! Both Parker and Tanzer give their thumbs up to this new little estate in Calatayud. After years of success with his personal project Las Rocas which consistently scored 90+ points, Eric Solomon began working on Evodia. Together with Yolanda Diaz (Managing Director of Las Rocas) and Jean Marc Lafage (Domaine Lafage), these Grenache Gurus have produced another awesome 100% Grenache in the high elevation, pure schist vineyards of Atea. It is a sexy little red with lots of red fruits and blackberries. It is

smooth on the palate and easy to drink. Las Rocas fans this is for you!” SCEVOD09AE

2006 Viticcio Chianti Classico Riserva (Tuscany) ................................ 2499

“The Landini family, proprietors of Viticcio strive for the highest quality and routinely achieve it. To their credit they have 3 wines in the top 100 over the last two years, an entire portfolio of 90-point wines and maybe the best olive oil I’ve ever tasted. The 2006 Chianti Classico Riserva is their most traditional offering and thus my favorite. It’s drinking beautifully now and features aromas hinting at flowers, chocolates and sour cherries and a rich creamy palate with an impressively long finish. We’re nearing the end of our stocks of 2006 (top 100 in 2009) but the 2007 is on its way and although less evolved is also a top 100 winner.” ITVICC06BE

2009 Domaine Roche Cotes du Rhone Village Cairanne SALE: 1499 1799

“Returning to his home in the Rhone after apprenticeships in Napa Valley and New Zealand, Romain Roche is a young and talented winemaker situated in a place that he will probably be calling home for a long time. Cairanne, the village, is recognized as a place of distinction and gains mention on the label already; it is speculated that it will become a Cru, a place of greatness, very soon and drop the mention of Cotes du Rhone entirely. A lush style, this Cairanne wine is very complex and fat in the center and a palate coater im-mediately; tasting after an hour or so the wine shows much more depth and a beguiling earthy element that keeps me wanting to examine it further. That really says something about a wine to keep discovering things on each taste.” FX05TOURAE

2009 Louro do Bolo Godello (Valdeorras, Spain) .............................. 1799

“This delicious wine offers stone fruit and citrus characteristics similar to those of Albarino yet with fewer floral and herbaceous notes and a more creamy texture than its typically acidic cousin. The 2009 Louro is 100% Godello (a white wine varietal native to Northwest Spain). Light gold in color with delicious aromas of lees, white peach, floral honey, juicy pear and a touch of oak spice. On the palate it has a voluptuous body, creamy texture, fresh acidity, superb intensity, excellent balance, and a lengthy finish. I see this outstanding value appealing not only to the obvious Godello connoisseurs but Chardonnay lovers and red wine drinkers trying to find a white wine they enjoy. Godello has never tasted so good.” SVLOUR09AE

Maria Karkazi of Bodegas Resalte (WINE SPECTATOR Top 100 #24)

We’re especially proud of finding Resalte. The new-generation owners spent years in the vineyards supplying pipe and trellis before becoming vintners in 2000. They know how to do it right, carefully organic with all the modern techniques, but stick to old Spanish values: long aging, longer finish. The 2005 is all Tempranillo, plus chocolate and licorice; very sleek texture.

Jose Manuel O. Fournier of Bodegas O. Fournier José Manuel Ortega Fournier makes incredible wines in both Ribera del Duero, Spain and Mendoza, Argenti-na. All are 90+ points made with the best grapes in the region. From O. Fournier’s value label, Urban, to Alpha Spiga, José makes some of the best Tempranillos and Malbecs in Spain and South America.
