journers living in our area (Ma-sons who belong to Masonic bodiesin another state, and have neverpursued becoming active in our dis-trict,) the goal of the Rusty Masonalways was to try to reach theseMasons and get them to be in-volved locally and to perhaps joinour area Masonic bodies. I havetalked with Sahib leaders aboutthis, and there is support for addi-tional advertising monies, I hopethe team will try to do more mediapromotion prior to the next RustyMason Reunion. Jerry Goacherannounced he is retiring as theevent producer, he has done a mag-nificent job refining the programfor the event, and will be very hardto replace, we hope the Past Mas-ters Unit and the leaders from the27th Masonic District will recruitsomeone to take the helm very soon,it takes several months to com-plete the plans for this event, wecan’t wait until the end of the yearto find our next leader.

The Shriners and the Masonicteam that put on the 15th An-

nual Rusty Mason Reunion did agreat job of refreshing memories ofthe 125+ Master Masons in atten-dance (there were 60+ that had notattended a Sahib Rusty Mason be-fore, just the kind of Brothers weare looking for.) I understand sev-eral petitions were handed out forthe Shrine. The program contin-ues to get better each year. Thisyear they added a dramatizationof the Master Mason Degree in fullcostume. The Grand Master ofFlorida Masons, M.W. J. DickMartinez was there, and indicatedhe was very impressed with thisyear’s program. Event producerJerry Goacher has assembledBrothers that really care about theprogram meeting its mission.Check photos on page 1, 8, 9 and42. The one thing missing, in myopinion, is we don’t publicize theevent well enough in the local me-dia. Most area leaders agree thereare in excess of 2,500 Masonic so-

The beginning of March bringsus to Ash Wednesday, which

ushers in the season of Lent. Whatand why is Lent? It provides anopportunity to bring voluntarilysome discipline and order into ourlives. It can be used as a period forthe exercise of some self-denial.Some will use the occasion for a re-ordering of their priorities. Lentcan be used as a time to encourageself-denial so that we grow instrength and character.

If we reject the voluntary meansfor moral and spiritual improve-ment, we can disintegrate and be-come prey to harmful pressures.Because of our inability to distin-guish between the morally rightand the iniquitous wrong, integ-rity becomes increasingly difficultto retain. What we do not do forourselves voluntarily, others may

arbitrarily compel us to do. Whenwe put off the day of decision forour moral, spiritual and evenphysical security, we may be forcedto suffer at other hands. So, it hasbeen written, “Search us, O Lord;try us and see if there be any wickedway in us, that we may be cleansedand be made pure.”

Then, in Mach, there is St.Patrick’s Day and who was he? Hewas an Apostle of Ireland, born inSouth Wales. At 16 he was taken toIreland by pirates. Six years laterhe escaped and became a monk inFrance where he was ordained aBishop at age 45 and later becamea missionary to Ireland around 432A. D. He fixed his see at Armaghwhere he was probably buried.

Therefore, we put on the greenin our salute to St. Patrick andbeware of the Ides of March!

Potentate’sNotes

Nobles,

It’s almost spring here in paradise, and Sahib is having many social func-tions, events and activities that outshine everyone in Shrinedom. Startingearly this month the Hillbilly Hoedown will be stompin’ up some dancin’ onMarch 5, and we should all ‘come on down’ and support them. Hillbillieswork hard for the Shrine all year and still have fun and good times. OurPancake Breakfast—first Sunday of every month—allows me to say hellonot only to those who work, but also allows me to visit with our memberswho support Sahib by enjoying our healthy breakfast.

Our highlight of this month will be a visit by Imperial Sir George Mitchelland his Lady Deanna on March 10. While all the nobles are enjoying themen’s luncheon, a very special ladies’ luncheon is being planned for Impe-rial Lady Deanna and will be open to all the ladies of Sahib. Tickets will beavailable at the office.

Bingo workers are certainly doing their share to support Sahib, and asusual, we could use some extra help. It’s not hard work and you will have afun time. Mid-March will find us at Tampa Downs, where we will have aspecial race during the middle of the evening. Our Motor Corps Poker Runwill be held March 20 and really deserves all our support. While enjoyingthe fun, music and bikes, take some chances on their wagon of adult re-freshments. These nobles are always working for us. Sarasota Fair will beat Robarts Arena this month and always needs volunteers.

There is something for everyone to enjoy this month and I and my LadyKaye will be looking forward to seeing you at all the functions. Remember toencourage new members for the Ceremonial and keep our motto in mind:“Friends become Brothers at Sahib.”

Yours in the Faith,

Tom Millaway, Potentate

Recorder’s notesby Oscar Cloutier, Recorder, [email protected]

Chief Rabban’s notesby Charles M. Levan, 33°, [email protected]

Assistant Rabban’s notesby Bill Zurlo, [email protected]

The month of February was a very special monthfor Sahib Shriners, this is the month that we go

out in the community to solicit moneys for our Hospi-tal Transportation Fund. This is the fund that Sahibuses to bring children from within our entire area, toour own Tampa Shriners Hospital for Children. Ev-ery year we have to replenish this fund. At the presenttime we have approximately 1,000 children in ourcommunities that are enrolled in the Tampa hospital. We have two vans and many volunteer drivers whowork tirelessly to make sure that these children andtheir parents get to the Tampa Hospital safely. Ourdrivers are very dedicated Shriners who give of their

time to accompany the children to Tampa, wait forthem and return them safely to their homes. Obvi-ously, the expenses are high.

There is another benefit to Hospital Days and thatis the self-satisfaction we all cherish because of themany stories we hear from the children’s parents. Many have experienced accompanying a child to ourhospitals for care, so they understand what thatentails. They thank us sincerely for what we asShriners accomplish. What a great reward that is forthe drivers and all Shriners.

After all, isn’t that what we are all about? “We PutChildren First!”

It is baseball season. This month’s activities aremany and varied. Spring training at McKechnie

Field in Bradenton is a most important activity forGulf and Manatee Shrine Clubs. Please contact thenobles in either of these clubs if you are able to help. Then there is the Sarasota County Fair. There arelots of opportunities to help there also.

Membership continues to be a major focus for theShrine. There are Master Masons out there that justneed a little encouragement to join in our fun andfellowship. Look around. Not all of your acquaintan-ces are Shriners. Ask someone to join the Shrine.

Ill. Sir Tom Millaway has tasked the Divan withopportunities to support the nobles and the temple.

My first opportunity is working with our Food andBeverage Manager Gene Borkowski and Recorder Ill.Sir Oscar Cloutier, PP to improve service and qualityof food in our restaurant. We have changed providersof foods to Sysco, eliminated slow selling menu items, developed new menus for both lunch and dinner(Sysco printing menus free of charge) featuring newspecials, changing pricing to benefit patrons, check-ing on new ovens to cook meats better and bringingback prime rib on Wednesday nights. We will also beprinting surveys to be completed by the nobility.NONE of this matters unless the nobility supportsthe facilities.

On service, we hope the nobility has noticed thattwo bartenders are serving prior to Thursday lun-cheon in the lounge in hopes of giving better service.

In addition, we are going to have a host or hostesson duty to enforce reservations for dinner prior tolarge events at the Shrine.

My second opportunity is working on ways to“Spice Up” the Birthday Anniversary Dinner Dance(BADD). Suggestions have been proposed to the Di-van to change the hours and day of the week, menuselection that allow the clubs and units to selectrather that the kitchen pre- selecting.

Lady Stacey Lee and I have been attending vari-ous dance venues and selected three new musicalgroups who might add a different “flavor” to ourselections.

The third person that I have been working with isKen Shipley our new Circus Chairman. Bob Trudel isassisting Ken and they are both working very hard toget this event up and running in a very short timeframe.

Many events will have come and gone or be ac-tively started by the time you read this article. Theseinclude the Potentate’s Ball, spring baseball and thecounty fair.

Pray for warm weather and an end to winter.

The top of the new month to you all; what you saythat I didn’t report anything last month? Well, I

am so glad that you actually read the Reporter andactually noticed that the Motor Corps had no article.I know that there was nothing there also, but that’smy story and I’m sticking to it.

Okay, okay a quickie review of events up until nowshows that Thunder on the Bay was a great successfor Booze Wagon sales that will benefit our annualPoker Run coming up on March 20. While I am on thatsubject, please remember that this event is not just

for motorcycles. Anyone who would like to participatecan come out and join in the actual ‘run’ or can simplybuy a poker hand at Sahib if you would wish, and thenjoin in the terrific party in the big hall, which usuallyspills outside as well. This new venue with live musicon stage that we started last year was a huge success,so we plan on continuing that this year. Of course, there will be the great food, door prizes and best handprizes etc. It would be great to see some of the otherunits come out in mass, okay, in groups then, and

March is here and as you read this Reporter, theManatee Club and Gulf Shrine Club are hard at

work with Pittsburgh Pirates at McKechnie Ball Park.In February at our Friday lunch meeting, we

inducted eight new members to the club and workedin Parrish for Hospital Days. Thanks to Bob Rodd andall his hard workers, we made over $2,600 for theHospital Transportation Fund. The Baseball Appre-ciation and Valentine’s Party was a great success this

year with 119 members in attendance and all had avery good time with each lady going home with one ortwo roses.

As we complete the baseball season in March theclub will be gearing up for April’s meeting and theApril 12 Birthday/Anniversary Dinner Dance, whichwe are the host. Manatee Shrine Club members willbe there and hope to see all the other clubs there withus.

support our Shrine supporting efforts. Four wheelsare just fine to participate.

In general, this is the time of year that manyorganizations have their fundraising events aimed atthe motorcycle riding community. We participate inmany of these poker runs or other venues, and inreturn, many of these folks come out to support ourPoker Run. So we do spend many weekends partakingin these activities.

Now, most of you are aware that I am writing thisarticle the first week of the month (February) priorto the month (March) for which it is published in theReporter. For this reason, some of the events I men-tion here haven’t taken place, as I write this. Soplease forgive me if I mess up on my verb tense. Thetricky ones are the events that come at the end of anymonth as the Reporter is sometimes out a few daysbefore the end of the month and sometimes a few daysafter the first of the new month. No ones fault - justwhat it is.

A good example of this is the Motor Corps VeryPopular Spaghetti Dinner held on February 27. Wecertainly hope that everyone enjoyed this traditionalfeast one more time. We always have a good timeputting this ordeal on for everyone, especially sinceeveryone is so gracious about thanking us. We lovecompliments. Hugs are good also. So I would like tothank all who attended for doing so. It makes us feelgood, as if we might have a chance to get onto that TV

show called Hell’s Kitchen. Yea, right. Don’t holdyour breath on that idea coming to fruition. To all ofour Corps members and their ladies that slaved allday to prepare the spaghetti and meatball feast, ourPresident Erik Bock, wanted me to make sure therewas a public THANK YOU, to one and all. You knowwho you are, and we sure don’t do it for the recogni-tion. Well, most of us anyway. For the record, I wantmy quality control, wine-tasting, job back next timethough.

That brings me up to a dilemma that at this time,we might be facing. That would be that our chief chefand slave driver Wally (Red Dog) Lacey who has hada tough time with a knee replacement and probablywon’t be up to his usual antics in the kitchen comespaghetti time. However, he has assured me that hewill be there to oversee operations as his reputationis on the line. Wally, we wish a speedy recovery; LadyConnie wanted me to especially emphasize the ‘speedy’aspect, and that it be soon. She wants to go joggingwith you again.

Well, March looks like we will be parading a bit.One of our regulars is the Arcadia Rodeo Parade onthe 12th. Plus, we haven’t been detailed yet, however,we normally escort the Imperial Potentate on hisvisits, which this year takes place on March 10 at theweekly luncheon. Then on Saturday the 19th, manyof us will join the Widow’s Sons Masonic Riding

We invite everyone to our club events in March! Wehold our Mixer at 5:00 p.m. Saturday, March 5 at the“Mystery Bistro” which can only be learned by phon-ing 1st VP Bob ‘Mixmaster’ Somerville (941) 429-6433 for your menu choices and reservations. Thenoff we go with our new float to the “Wild West Parade”in Arcadia, 10:00 a.m. Saturday, March 12. We windup the month on Monday, March 21 at our “Pic w/Chick” at 11:00 a.m. in the North Port Dallas WhitePark picnic pavilion. Please register with Sam Cohen(941) 276-0329 or President Jack Watson (941) 240-5737 for reservations and needed contributions.

Our club put out an “All Hands on Deck” effort lastmonth collecting donations for “Shrine Hospital Days”from shoppers at three cooperating Publix supermar-kets! Second Vice President John Brophy and BoardMember Bill Schultz were ably assisted by StoreCaptains Don Gatrell and Don Valerino and up to 40other nobles and ladies serving one, two and three 2-hour shifts. Congratulations to all, this is what theShrine is all about!

Our numbers continued to swell at our recentevents with 43 nobles and 9 ladies at our February 1breakfast where we installed new member DinoBuehnor. Visitors and guests included: Sam and KarenDickstein from Tuxedo, New York; Ray and RuthMcKelvey of Crescent Island Heights, New Jerseyand Don Moulton from west of Bar Harbor, Maine.

Each Tuesday 7:30 a.m. rain or shine, 52 weeks ofthe year, we breakfast at the Olde World Restaurant

in North Port for info, fun and fellowship. We inviteany Mason or Shriner families to join us for somefriendly banter, and civic projects. And please con-tinue to bring your old magazines with blackened orcut out address labels to our Tuesday breakfasts forVP John Brophy and his gang to contribute to medicalwaiting rooms and fire stations.

Nobles’ sickness and distress: “Mixmaster” BobSomerville is home from the hospital and supposedlytaking it easy for 30 days after suffering a TIA.Secretary/Treasurer Clint Van Tassell had anotherstent installed adjacent to his heart, President JackWatson wears a brace from recent carpal tunnelsurgery and Don White is recovering well from hissurgery. Please offer support to these families andkeep them in your thoughts and prayers.

And as we go to press, no reader identified ourFebruary Quotable Notable as conservative newspa-per columnist David Brooks who recently wrote thefollowing about the WikiLeaks: “The quality of (dip-lomatic) conversation is damaged by exposure, just asour relationships with our neighbors would be dam-aged if every private assessment were brought to thelight of day. We’ve seen what happens when conver-sations deteriorate (look at the U.S. Congress), andit’s ugly.”

So here’s our March quiz: What nationally recog-nized researcher recently wrote: “According to a re-cent CNN poll, 60% of Americans under 60 and 70%of those under 50 believe that Social Security will not

Greetings from the Ag Building, as I write this inFlorida, the weather is beautiful in early Febru-

ary, but the midwest and northeast are trying to copewith high winds, several feet of snow and sub-zerotemperatures. Truly, we are blessed to be able tospend our winters in Florida!

Moving along, recent VSC activities include theinstallation of our 2011 officers and directors onJanuary 18 and Shrine Hospital Days collections onFebruary 3, 4 and 5. The officers’ installation wasconducted by Ill. Sir Tom Millaway, ably assisted byChief Rabban Charles Levan 33°. Hospital Days, ofcourse, involve too many nobles to list. Collecting forour kids is truly one of our most important and

rewarding duties. It is very inspirational to witnessthe generosity of people and hear the actual stories ofchildren and relatives helped by our Shriners Hospi-tals for Children.

We continue to meet every third Tuesday of themonth (except July and August) for socializing, lunchand whatever “business” requires voting by the mem-bership. We meet at the South Venice Yacht Club,4425 Yacht Club Drive, Venice. All Shriners andMasons are invited to join us. If possible, please givePresident Jim Jensen a call in advance so he can alertthe caterer. How lucky we are to be Shriners!

The first reader to send the correct answer to theabove e-mail address wins a free Tuesday morningbreakfast for two with the North Port Shrine Club.

The Ides of March are upon us and that means twothings: spring and warm weather are not too far

down the road and parade season is about to begin. How about a March parade in Arcadia for their rodeo?

I continue to be amazed at how much the currentmilitary climate is evolving and improving. For ex-ample, the US Army is seriously considering openingcombat arms units to females. Why not? They arealready front line combat troops in Iraq driving con-voys or flying helicopter gun ships. Especially underconsideration are women in infantry units to includeSpecial Forces.

For those of us who are retired “modest increasesin TRICARE fees for working-age retirees” is underconsideration by the SecDef. We still have the verybest medical plan bar none and the fees have not been

raised since 1995 so perhaps we will have to bite thebullet on this one. When I can get my prescriptions forfree; a small raise is not questionable.

Have you paid your 2011 LOH dues yet? Almost65% of our current dues paying membership of 67LOH nobles have now paid their 2011 dues. Help yourLOH and please pay your 2011 dues soon. We nolonger have any emeritus members. During 2010, welost three nobles to the dreaded Black Camel and wesuspended NPD three (3) members for the statisticalfacts for the LOH for 2010.

WHO THE LOH IS: A Veteran is someone who, atone point, wrote a check to the United States ofAmerica, payable in any amount, up to including hislife.

St. Patrick’s Day is Ireland’s greatest nationalholiday as well as a holy day. The date marks the

anniversary of the death of the missionary who be-came the patron saint of Ireland. It is a happy holidayfor the Irish wherever they may be - in Dublin, NewYork City, Boston or San Francisco. The day is cel-ebrated with parades, speeches, festive dinners anddances. Green is the color of the day, with thousandsof little cloth shamrocks worn even by those whoseforefathers never touched the shores of Ireland.

It is known that St. Patrick was born in Britain towealthy parents near the end of the fourth century. At the age of sixteen, Patrick was taken prisoner by

a group of Irish raiders who were attacking his family’sestate. They transported him to Ireland where hespent six years in captivity. During this time, heworked as a shepherd, outdoors and away from people.Lonely and afraid, he turned to his religion for solace, becoming a devout Christian. The first St. Patrick’sDay parade took place not in Ireland, but in theUnited States. Irish soldiers serving in the Englishmilitary marched through New York City on March 17,1762. Along with their music, the parade helped thesoldiers to reconnect with their Irish roots, as well asfellow Irishmen serving in the English army. Sud-denly, St. Patrick’s Day parades became a show ofstrength for Irish Americans, as well as a must-attend event for a slew of political candidates. In

1948, President Truman attended New York City’sSt. Patrick’s Day parade, a proud moment for themany Irish whose ancestors had to fight stereotypesand racial prejudice to find acceptance in America.

Well, the East/West Shrine Game has come andgone for 2011. There were great gatherings and

food the days leading up to the game. It started theweek before at the Tampa Shriners Hospital for Chil-dren, where the players and coaches got to meet theShriner kids. The two days before the game haddinners and banquets with all the Imperial Officersand Potentates from all over the US and Canada.Everyone can attend these events. Bring a friend nextyear that’s not a Shriner. This is surely a good way toshow the great work Shriners do and the fun theyhave doing it.

Sahib again had three busloads of fans from theSarasota area. The fans filed out of the buses andwithin minutes, they were set up for the biggesttailgate party at the Orlando All Star Game. Aseveryone got their fill of snacks, hots and brats, turkey sandwiches, beverages, and of course the cupcakes, laughter and fun was everywhere. The look of

excitement and joy filled the faces of most everyone.Shrines from all over the country got together toshare stories of their Shrine and past games theyattended.

Then came the game, with the East team takingcontrol of the scoreboard early. But, into the secondquarter we go. The sun started to set and the windstarted to pick up. Those looks of excitement and joystarted turning to looks of fear that the next thingthey may see would be the Abominable Snowman! The temperatures dropped and at the half, mostscrambled in search of shelter from the cold winds. Atthe beginning of the second half, there was a lotbetter selection of seats. We forgot to put together acommittee for the weather. With everyone home safeand sound, I want to thank all of the great people thathelped out with this project. This working togethershows what teamwork can do and the fun that can behad when we pull together.

A spinal cord injury (SCI) can be devastating. Generally resulting in some degree of paralysis and disruption of the body’s voluntary and involuntary actions, the impact and implications of SCI last a lifetime.

Shriners Hospitals for Children® is committed to providing expert orthopaedic and rehabilitative care to its patients with SCI. However, being able to offer the best care is dependent on accurate assessment and diagnosis, which requires being able to determine the exact level and extent of injury.

In pediatric SCI, this has been especially difficult due to the lack of pediatric-based tools; the standard test for assessing SCI was designed for adults. Researchers have found that age 6 may be the youngest age children are developmentally able to understand the instructions, and older children do not react well to some aspects of the test.

To fill the void in pediatric evaluations, researchers at Shriners

Hospitals for Children®, led by MJ Mulcahey, Ph.D., director of rehabilitation services and clinical research at the Philadelphia hospital, established the first assessment guidelines applicable to kids with SCI as young as 3 months old.

Funded by research grants from Shriners Hospitals for Children®, the pediatric version of the International Standards for Neurological Classification of Spinal Cord Injury, known as WeeStep, is an electronic learning module that compliments the established assessment program for adults with SCI. The WeeStep provides evidence-based methods to evaluate and classify the level and implications of SCI in children, based on established childhood developmental guidelines.

These new guidelines will help professionals determine the level and extent of SCI and allow for reasonable predictions or expectations for neurological recovery and for developing the best medical care plan for each patient. The WeeStep is available to medical professionals world-wide via the American Spinal Injury Association Web site.

Another effort to increase understanding of SCI and related problems is the establishment of the Pediatric Research Center, which opened in September 2009 in Philadelphia. The 23,000 square-foot facility, located in the new Temple University Medical School Education and Research Building across the street from Shriners Hospitals for Children® — Philadelphia, will be used primarily for research in neural (nerve) repair and

rehabilitation, including the spinal cord, neuromuscular injury and brain injury. The Center is under the direction of Michael Selzer, M.D., former director of rehabilitation research and development for the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Temple University and Shriners Hospitals for Children® aim to establish a translational research program where basic science developments can benefit children with neuromuscular conditions. Drs. Selzer and Mulcahey have strategically planned to connect basic science to clinical research so that new knowledge will be offered to children receiving care from Shriners Hospitals for Children®.

Currently, the health care system is funding approximately 12 research studies at the three hospitals with SCI programs involving different aspects of SCI, ranging from cell repair to quality of life issues. In addition, researchers at Shriners Hospitals for Children® share their expertise through academic affiliations at noteworthy institutions and by providing opportunities for post-doctoral researchers.

The emphasis on research and education is indicative of Shriners Hospitals for Children®’s total commitment to determining, as well as providing, the best care for children with SCI.

Shriners Hospitals for Children® depends on donations to fund all its programs, including research. For information on ways you can support this effort, please visit www.donate2SHC.org.

Sar-I Court No. 79 LOSNAby Diane Albinson, High Priestess, [email protected]

Nyla Temple No. 152Daughters of the Nileby Katherine Rodd, Queen, [email protected]

Hello Ladies! March can you believe it? Just as thespring flowers are appearing and the weather

has finally, I hope, returned to normal, it is time fora new leader of our great organization. Congratula-tions to Lady Patty Hunsberger, High Priestess elect!Lady Patty’s installation will be held on Saturday,March 26. I wish Lady Patty and her great team ofofficers’ success this year.

My year is filled with so many wonderful memo-ries and friendships made along the way. Sar-I Courtsupported many fundraisers, activities, and mostimportantly prepared for the upcoming Grand Coun-cil to be held in Sarasota, in May. On February 2, wewelcomed home our Grand High Priestess, LadyJennie Crawford (see photo on page 41.) What anhonor it was for me to be standing in the East andgreeting her on behalf of all the ladies! We made thisday very special for her.

Once again, we reached out and helped the 27thMasonic District at the Child ID program held on

February 5, at Home Depot on University Parkway. Our ladies love to help the kids, and now, in a slightlydifferent way!

On March 2, I will welcome four new BonnieLassies to Sar-I Court. I have been fortunate thisyear to increase the membership by 12 ladies! I hopeto make my class a special part of my life by sharingwith them the love of our great organization.

Finally, thank you ladies for all you did for me,your support, friendship and the honor of leading thisgreat organization.

See you soon, and remember to begin each daywith love in your heart!

Please call me (941) 922-9311 or <[email protected]>for information about joining our active organization. We have great fun while working hard for the chil-dren in our Shriners Hospitals for Children.

Wow, how the time has flown by! This is my lastarticle as queen of Nyla Temple. It has been

quite a year as queen. I want to thank all my officersand the ladies on the sidelines for your support andhelp this year. You don’t know how much this hasmeant to me. We had some difficult times but as ateam, we pooled our resources together and we madeit through with flying colors. Our lunches togetherwere so delectable and gave all of us some great ideasfor some wonderful dishes. It was so nice to have ournobles present at some of these lunches. I know theladies appreciated not having to prepare a meal thosedays. Gentlemen of the Creek is still alive and someof the details are being worked on for a local group. The activities we did were a lot of fun, it gave us theopportunity to let our hair down and have fun gettingto know each other better.

The photo (on page 41) is of a tea held in January,Princess Royal Diane Nourse really outdid herself. The food that everyone prepared was so well pre-

sented and so delicious. Five hours later, we finallyparted to head home. There was so much preparingfor the supreme queens visit in February and it cameand went much too fast. It was so impressive to haveso many dignitaries at the banquet. Our visit to theShriners Hospital for Children with the SupremeQueen Sue Layman will hold a special memory forme. It was a delight to see the expression of delight onthe faces of the children as we all came in with ourcrowns on. This year I had the opportunity to promoteDaughters of the Nile at the Manatee County Fair.The Masons and the various appendant bodies tookturns manning the booth. Wearing my crown broughtmany questions and some very positive thoughts onfuture endeavors of this kind. I have made some visitsthis past year to other temples and the friendshipsthat have developed with my counterparts will con-tinue for a lifetime. (front, l-r): Brian Johnston, current Master; Ron Baber, District Instructor; Norm Cyphers, PM;MW J. Dick Martinez, Grand Master of Florida; RW Frank Albinson, District Deputy Grand Master;

RW Jerry Goacher, KCCH PDDGM (event producer) and Derl Smith, PM.(back row l-r): Lou Ortt, 33° PM; Fred Ellis, PM; Allen Sorbie, PM; Ronald P. Kamp, guest speaker,

Director of Development & Communications at the Masonic Medical Research Labs.;Rocky Kearney, PM; Joe Goggin, PM, Ken Latham Jr., PM and Roy Wenninger, PM.

Helloooooooo Shriners and your ladies, we knowyou have very busy lives but want to remind you

of a great activity you may be missing; that of attend-ing a High Twelve Luncheon/meeting. I am sure mostof you know Noble Gene Black. He is currently thepresident of Cortez Hi-12 Club #538 which meets atDuff’s Original Buffet at the corner of Route 41(Tamiami Trail) and 60th Avenue in Bradenton everyMonday, November through April.

Gene and the other 30 to 35 of us would like tohave you share a time or two with us with the hopeyou will want to come back for more. We arrivebetween 10:30 and 11:00 a.m. to socialize. We con-tinue to socialize but also eat around 11:00 with ouractivities starting around 11:45 a.m. Fun stories areto be had as well as useful and useless information.Volkert Smith usually has a very interesting story ortwo to tell. By the way, have you heard the news, thatwe are known as the hugging club? Yes, that iscorrect, the hugging club, which is part of everymeeting as we meet our latest attendees; in fact, ifthere are no new ones there we hug anyway. Youreally should come and find out what this is all about.Sometimes we also have a speaker or entertainment. We usually finish between 12:45 and 1:15 p.m. Comesing with us, meet, greet and be greeted by fellowMaster Masons and their ladies. Remember your ladyis always as welcome as you are.

While I think of it I want to tell you about the greatHi-12 Day you missed on February 19. We hadbetween 150 and 200 participants enjoying greatfood, wonderful fellowship, stupendous entertain-ment and we even had an auction which incidentally, yours truly, was the auctioneer. It was a blast and wemade some money, which helps. It was held in Mid-Florida Lakes and as you can imagine there wereHigh Twelvians, their ladies and many guests fromall around Florida, some travelling several hourseach way to be there.

A special added attraction this year was the hon-oring of a very special Hi-12 Past Florida State Presi-dent as well as he was a Past Hi-12 InternationalPresident Jim Satterthwaite and his lady Naomi.

There is so much I could and hopefully will tell youabout, in future issues of The Reporter. However,Gene and I would love to see you at our get-togethersso we can tell you all about it in person. When youcome, not if you come, as you enter Duff’s turn left andyou will see us in a glassed-in room. You pay us($8.50 pp which includes your tax, tip, full buffet anddrink). Remember, we only meet November throughApril so make your plans to come real soon. We will belooking for you and your lady.

Have you ever thought about the three men (sojourners) who ascended into the rubble of King

Solomon’s temple and began removing it so the build-ing of the second temple could begin? To identifythese three we need to go to the Book of Daniel. Here wefind King Nebuchadnezzar ordering his chief eunuch toselect from the Israelites a number of boys who werewell-educated, well-informed, quick learners who wouldbe suitable for service in the palace of the king.Among those chosen were Daniel, Esdras, Zachariah, and Nehemiah. The chief eunuch then renamed themaccording to the Chaldean language: Belteshazzar,Shadrach, Meshach and Abed’nego respectively.

Now King Nebuchadnezzar made an image of goldand ordered all to bow down and worship the image orbe destroyed in the fiery furnace. Shadrach, Meshachand Abed’nego refused to pay homage to the imageand placed all their trust in God. They were thenthrown into the furnace. All three came out of thefurnace without a hair being disturbed. These causedthe king to have a change of heart, allowing no oneunder his domain to say anything against the God ofthese three men.

It was these three sojourners who had not origi-nally accompanied Zerubbabel from Babylon, but

who came later, who assisted their countrymen in theremoval of rubble from the remains of Solomon’stemple. During this operation, these three made animportant discovery of the stone which has become sointimately connected with the history of Masonry.Masonic tradition tells us that the three sojournersare Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed’nego, the threeholy men who were thrown into the fiery furnace. Itwas by going into the underground vaults that theMasonic stone of foundation and other importantmysteries connected to it were found by these three.

May you remember these three dedicated indi-viduals when you look at the beautiful saffron apronwith the representation of the second temple as wornin the 16th degree (Prince of Jerusalem) and remem-ber that, while we are not building an edifice like theearly temple, we are still building a spiritual templeto our Eternal Father and we do this by following theteachings of our great fraternity.

Remember, our regular meeting will be held onMarch 14 at 7:30 p.m. Dinner will be served at6:00 p.m. Call the office for reservations. Don’t For-get We Have A Reunion Scheduled For April 9and 16. LET’S GET THOSE PETITIONS IN.

At our February club meeting, we had close to 30brethren in attendance. The program for the

evening was the Fourteenth Degree exemplified bythe SSRC members that perform it in both the Springand the Fall Reunions at the Tampa Consistory. Theteam did an outstanding job, it was a great opportu-nity to see this degree up close and personal. If youhaven’t made it to one of the club meetings, thenmake a point to show up for the next one and sharesome of that great fellowship with your fellow breth-ren. The meetings are the first Wednesday at 6:00 p.m.in even numbered months (except December).

Our next luncheon will be on March 11 - mybirthday, so why don’t you come on down and wish memany happy returns. We’ll start gathering at around11:30 a.m. It’s very casual, just come as you are andorder off the menu.

We don’t have a club meeting in March, but it’snever too early to talk about our biggest event of the

year, the Ceremony of Remembrance and Renewal, will take place on April 6 at the Scottish Rite buildingat 240 S. Tuttle Ave. A catered dinner will be servedat 6:00 p.m. followed by the ceremony at 7:00 p.m.There is no charge for dinner, but donations will beaccepted. This event is open to the public, so weencourage everyone to bring his family and friends toexperience this wonderful event. Reservations arenot required, but for the purposes of ordering food ifyou would please contact me with the number peoplein your party we would greatly appreciate it at (941)232-1494 or <[email protected]>Please Note: Any Scottish Rite Mason in good stand-ing is eligible to visit or even join the SarasotaScottish Rite Club. The Masonic Medical Research Laboratory (MMRL)is a not-for-profit institute supported by volun-

teer contributions and bequests. The Laboratory alsoobtains funding through foundation, corporation andFederal grants. The MMRL is a state-of-the-art medi-cal research facility engaged in studies involvingmajor health issues facing society today such as,ischemic heart disease, cardiac arrhythmias, suddencardiac arrest and other aspects of cardiovasculardisease.

Mission StatementThe MMRL is dedicated to improving the health andquality of life for all humankind. The Laboratory'sprimary mission is to conduct high quality basicmedical research aimed at generating knowledge andinformation necessary for development of the medi-cal cures and treatments of tomorrow. The Labora-tory is also committed to providing education andtraining to basic scientists and clinical researcherswho would perpetuate and extend the fight againstdisease.

Scientific AchievementsOur scientistshave played andcontinue to playa pivotal role indefining themajority ofmechanisms re-sponsible fora b n o r m a lrhythms of the

heart, commonly termed cardiac arrhythmias, therebycontributing to implementation of the pacemaker, implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD), cath-eter ablation therapy and a wide variety of drugsused to treat heart disease. We also discovered a newsub-population of heart cells termed, "M" cells thathave revolutionized the world of cardiology. Thisfinding and others have led to discovering the basisfor the J wave and T wave of the ECG, thus providingcardiologists a more accurate means of diagnosingcardiac disease. Recent studies have uncovered thefirst gene responsible for sudden death in youngadults and have provided the first direct evidencelinking an abnormal heart rhythm, known as the longQT syndrome to a form of Sudden Infant Death (SIDS).We look forward to intensifying our efforts to identifygenetic mutations responsible for the Brugada syn-drome and other life threatening inherited arrhyth-mia syndromes. The MMRL is the leading center forstudy of the Brugada syndrome in the United States.

As the Laboratory hasgrown in prominence, members of the scientificstaff have received numer-ous invitations to presenttheir research findings at

international, national and regional symposiathroughout the world. These findings have earnedten international awards within the last five yearsand have appeared in the most prestigious medicaland scientific journals in the world. The MMRL hasalso received increasing amounts of media coverageof its scientificachievements. Oneparticular highlightwas for the Laboratory'srole in providing thefirst direct evidencelinking Sudden InfantDeath Syndrome(SIDS) to an abnormalheart rhythm. Thisparticular study waspublished in the July2000 issue of the NewEngland Journal ofMedicine.

Our ability to link specific diseases to defectivegenes has opened up new vistas in our understandingof human disease and in our approach to the develop-ment of the much needed therapies and cures. Withthis in mind, our Laboratory took another bold stepforward in establishing a Molecular Genetics Pro-gram. Our Laboratory is now one of a handful of worldcenters capable of determining the genetic basis ofcardiac arrhythmias responsible for sudden cardiacarrest in young adults, children and infants. The MGprogram facilitates a more patient-focused approachto our research aimed at the identification of genescausing malignant arrhythmias. It complements theelectrophysiology research and molecular biologyprograms and works in concert with them to optimizeand accelerate scientific discovery at the MMRL.

In less than one year, this program linked a newclinical entity responsible for sudden cardiac death, termed the Short QT Syndrome, to an ion channeldefect in the heart. The identification of the geneticbasis for the disease permits investigators at theMMRL to pinpoint drugs that may be candidates forthe specific treatment of this syndrome. One of thegreat benefits of genetic identification of disease isthat it provides us an understanding of the disease atits root cause, thus providing a better means todiagnose, treat and someday cure the congenital dys-function. Working with clinical colleagues in Europe,MMRL investigators are well on their way to identi-fying appropriate therapies for patients who inheritthe disease from their parents. Until now, the im-plantation of an automatic cardioverter defibrillatorwas the only option in preventing sudden premature

death.The MMRL has be-

come a referral center forpharmaceutical and bio-technology companies

2. How many tabs in a pound? 1,267.3. How many tabs will a gallon milk jug hold? About 5 pounds

worth.4. How does it work and where does the money go? The tabs

are delivered to the Sahib office (or almost any Sahib club/unit location) and then taken to the recycling center. Themoney netted from recycling goes directly into the “WheelChair Repair Fund” at the Tampa Shriners Hospital forChildren.

Help us collect TABS! It’s easy and it’s fun! Put out a milk jug at every picnic or party!
