As we travel through life, sometimes others seek to push you down, to make nothing out of your hopes and dreams, your future and yourself. By ridicule and many other negative means, a person who is evil-intentioned towards you can try to bring about your decline. For whatever reason, efforts to improve yourself, to become happier in life, can become the subject of attacks. It is sometimes necessary to handle such actions directly, but there is a better, more long-range “handling” that seldom fails. What exactly are such people trying to do to you? If they are trying to reduce you downward, they must conceive that you are dangerous to them in some way; that if you got up in the world, you could be a menace to them. So, in various ways, such people seek to depress or limit your talents and abilities. Some extreme cases have people who have a general plan that goes like this; If ”A” becomes more successful, “A” could be a rival or menace to me, therefore I must do all I can to make “A” less successful. It never seems to occur to them that their actions might make an enemy out of ”A” even though “A” was no enemy before. Why do some people do it? Is it from a competitive nature, although there is nothing good in this part of the “nature”; or from prejudice or simply because they “don’t like someone.” However, it is attempted, the object of this action is often to make their target grow less and fail in life. NEXT OFFICIAL VISIT Nickel Lodge No. 427 March 2 nd 2011 Dinner 6:00pm - $10.00 PLAN TO ATTEND The way to best handle such a situation and such people, the real way to defeat them, is to flourish and prosper. Yes, it is true that such people, seeing you improve, can become frantic and attack all the harder. The thing to do is simple; do not give up flourishing and prospering! That is what people such as this desire. If you flourish and prosper more and more, such people will stop targeting you as they see their efforts as being wasted. If your aims in life are honourable, if you carry them out with due attention to the precepts we are taught, if you flourish and prosper, you certainly will achieve you aims, and hopefully, those who are attempting to thwart you will realise the futility of their actions. And that is my wish for you................ Flourish and Prosper! Sincerely and fraternally yours, Albert W. Stonier D.D.G.M.

supplying background information to R.W. Bro. Eric T. Moorefor a Dinner speech where Bill received an award in Sault SteMarie recently. I have borrowed liberally from that and thequotes are mostly from David's writing. There was alsomaterial from Bill himself and the Trout Lake Camper'sAssociation.Bill was born May 16, 1926 in Medicine Hat, Alberta. Hisfamily moved to Owen Sound, Ontario, then on to Sudbury in1938. His father, Robert, worked at Davidson's Garage (laterSudbury Motors). He attended Gatchell Public School, "wherehe was allowed to skip a Grade. Even as a young lad Bill wasrecognized for his skills and abilities. He then went to SudburyMining and Technical School where he graduated. After hisgraduation he started to work with INCO."Bill volunteered for the Armed Services at the age of seventeenwhen the Second World War broke out. After his training, hemainly guarded prisoners. He claims he got the best brush-cutshe ever had from a German prisoner at the Camp. While he was recovering from an injury, in which he lost hislittle finger, he began acting in a Play at St. Andrews Church.

William McKnight or Bill, is a good manto have on your team. He is able to lookat situations and provide what is neededfor the team, whether that is to stay in thebackground and let things develop orprovide leadership when required. It was fortunate that a lot of goodinformation was available for thisbiography, mostly due to the help of acouple of people. His son, David, has been most helpful in

His son also tells us that "Bill was an excellent father-always interested in his sons' lives and now hisgrandchildren's activities. He spent many evenings sittingin the stands at basketball games and freezing besidefootball fields. He continues to support his children and hisgrandchildren in all their endeavours."He worked 42 years for International Nickel Company(later INCO) in the Mechanical Department. His last 15years he worked as a Mine Hoist Inspector. He retired in1984 from INCO and has been busy ever since with variousactivities such as fishing, hunting, bowling, curling andScouting. He gave up bowling due to his commitments inScouting and he stopped Curling when he became activewith Lodge. He was very active in Scouting becomingTraining Chairman, working with Scout Leaders then spentfour years as President of the District Council.Bill has made excellent use of leisure time. While some ofus consider leisure as resting, Bill has used his time to workhis way through the Chairs in Lodge, working his waythrough the various levels in the command structure ofScouting, and helping form and run the Trout LakeCamper's Association.Trout Lake has been a very special spot for Bill and hisfamily. When a fellow employee at INCO mentioned to Billthat some property was becoming available at Trout Lake,he decided to go have a look. Bill and his father venturedout to check out the property when the only road in theTrout Lake area was to Happy Landing Lodge. There theyboarded their homemade plywood boat with a 7 hp motoron it and he staked his property and purchased it. Mariancame with him the next year to see it and had the privilegeof riding in on the bulldozer which was building their newroad. The camps were built cooperatively, with each personcontributing their specialized knowledge to the group effort. The article from some years ago in the "Trout LakeCamper's Association Newsletter" which featured Bill, called "Safety First, The McKnight Story" is entertaining inthe recalling of the beginnings of the development of theLake area. In his own words, Bill claims, "We really hadsome good times at Driftwood (Road) we could work allday on the camps and go on to Driftwood in the evening, play Liar's Dice long into the night and then go back in thepitch black night, no hydro on the lake, no markers on thedangerous rocks". When the interviewers asked about therules for Liar's Dice game, his youngest son Allen piped up"you can only understand the rules after you drink fourbeers" . It seems that they had some good fun along withthe hard work. They had to bring construction materials inby boat for the original hunt camp. The main camp saw alarge truck deliver the materials over the ice in winter. Thecamping tradition has lasted to this day for Bill and family.Hunting, fishing and being together at camp is still animportant part of their lives.

Continued on page 8

According to his son, "Hisinterest in the stage could beexplained by the fact thatMarian Hunt was also involvedin these Productions-especiallyone called A Farce in ThreeActs. Their motto was "If itwasn't a farce before we itstarted, it was when it wasfinished." "We must believethat it was all for love-Bill hasn'tacted before or since- and hemarried Marian three years laterin 1949."

V.W. Bro. W. R. McKnightHe and Marian, after Bill's retirement spent four months ofevery year in Florida. He says he was "very lucky to meetmany friends in the Craft and became very active in Floridaduring the winter months."Bill has been very involved in Masonry and concordant bodiesover the years. He was Initiated into Sudbury Lodge #658 June1964, and Raised to Master Mason May 21, 1965. Bill wasInstalled as Worshipful Master of Sudbury Lodge in 1977 andagain in 1978 as he served two consecutive years as Master. Hewas District Secretary for the 1981-82 year and Grand Stewardin 1982-83. Bill joined Tuscan Chapter October 27, 1973

(M.M.M., M.E.M., H.R.E.October 27, 1973) and becameFirst Principal in 1983. He hasbeen a Life Member sinceNovember 27, 1989, andGrand Sword Bearer in 2001.He joined the MavarPerceptory #65, Red Cross andMalta, May 4 1974 andbecame Presiding Perceptor in1982, and Grand StandardBearer in 1988-89. then AlphaCouncil

R.W. Bro. Eric Moore & V.W.Bro. Bill McKnight

He joined Northern Lights Conclave #2 as R.C.C., October4, 1986 and A.O., April 4, 1987, becoming Most PuissantSovereign in 2006.Bill joined the A.A.O.N.M.S. Ramses Temple in June 1974and Sudbury Shrine Club in September 1974, becomingPresident in 1985. He joined Moore Sovereign Consistoryon November 12, 1988.Bill became a member of Elam Council #34, Order of theHigh Priesthood as a Charter Member and then President in2006, the Grand Master of the Order Of The HighPriesthood of Ontario 2009-2010.Bill's contributions to Masonry are many and he hasinfluenced his Brethren and the many bodies related toMasonry over the years and he has made manycontributions to Scouting as a King's Scout and later in lifeas Training Chairman (training leaders) and becamePresident of the Sudbury and District Boy Scouts duringwhich time he was involved in creating the Trout LakeCamper's Association. It is really refreshing to read his son's words that "He is agreat Dad" in the bio-summary he wrote for R W EricMoore. He is a family man and when Bill mentions Marian,he always refers to "his lady" and while he doesn’t oftenspeak of family when we see him at Lodge, it is obvious thatthey are his priority. What is apparent from reading all that I have done aboutBill and from my own experience is that Bill has been aninfluence on a lot of people over the years. In Lodge, whenyou really need someone to do a piece of first rate work, orneed advice, Bill has always been there for us. Fromreading more about his life, he has also been the same forhis family; and all the groups in which he participated.
