Installing a waterproof stereo in my Cruiser.
New Sound System For Summer
The Cruiser is done and it's a good thing. Don't get me wrong, there's always some-thing to add and I'm sure I'll
find an excuse to add an acces-sory or two on it.
A couple Saturday’s ago, I found myself working indoors on my Land Cruiser. For my birthday last year, I received a Pyle water-proof stereo system, commonly used for marine watercraft. The waterproof sound system is perfect for my Cruiser because I don't have a hard top or soft top and it will spend many hours outdoors without protection.
If you’ll remember, I don’t have glass in my driver and passen-ger doors which means I don’t have a window crank. I had a round opening on each door where the window crank origi-nally was and I felt it would be a good place to put a 5.5” round speaker.
I first measured the opening to make sure the 5.5” speaker would fit and found out it was about a 1/4” narrow. I took a Sharpie marker and sketched out where the 1/4” needed to be shaved off.
I turned on the grinder and slowly took off the 1/4” of metal making sure I took off only the part that I needed to remove.
This took a little time but the speaker fit nicely in place.
Next, I marked holes with a Sharpie where the screws would mount the speaker to the door. I took four self-tapping screws and drilled the holes and mounted the speaker to the door. I took the speaker off, at-tached the wire to the contacts and remounted the speaker to the door.
I then performed this operation on the passenger side and now I have two speakers mounted and ready for the headunit to be attached.
