Chicago/Mattoon (Customer Service)A quick review of the year 2010, shows that the year provided my family with some ups, and downs. The highlight of the year was the birth of , only the 2nd grandchild in our familytree. Born in September, she "tiptoed" in a few ounces over 9 pounds. Her big brother , turned 5 thenext month. They are the children of our youngest son , and wife . Being born in the 30's, itwas a long wait for Doris and I to gain the pleasures of grand parenting. On the dark side, suffered a stroke inAugust, but has recovered beautifully. As she says, I'm just a little bit slower, and a little weaker; but otherwise fine.A second negative occurred in November, when was coming out of church, and fell and broke her leg. Itwas a bad break so , and us grandparents have some added duties until Bridget gets off her crutches. A winterescape to the south or west are not in our plans. Feeding a baby at 3 in the morning happens occasionally, and is notthe highlight of the day. I guess it's a little like riding a bike again. One remembers how, but it's not high on my listof favorite things to do. By spring, things should return to normal, and golf will again become my source of funthings to do. The winter months are highlighted by gin rummy twice a week at the club, reading, and following myfavorite sport teams on TV. At the end of January, and I will celebrate our 58th wedding anniversary. Inclosing, our thanks to the officers and staff that put together the fine newsletter. We look forward to the letters andpictures from former co-workers and friends.

Gunner's Mate North Atlantic Bronze StarDuring his years on the USS Northland in World War II, battled ice as he didNazis, It was so cold in the waters of the North Atlantic, he said, you'd last only three minutes ifyou fell in the water. His face swathed with a giant beard to protect it from temperatures 40 degreesbelow zero and ice storms and the Coast Guard cutter's crew stopped three times a day to whack theirship free of ice with whatever they had on hand: baseball bats, screwdrivers, hammers, sledges and wedges, too.

worried first about his gun, the forward gun he was in charge of as a gunner's mate on the ice breaker. "Itgot so iced up we couldn't use it," said , 89. "But submarines couldn't surface anyhow, so we liked thatpart of the weather. And we had to do this, all hands on the ship had to get up and chip ice." The Northland watchedfor German submarines up in the North Atlantic, around Iceland and Greenland. It helped knock out German radiostations on islands around Greenland, stations that took weather readings. "The weather forms up there. So theyknew when the weather was right for the Germans to go over and bomb England and France," he said. "The Britishdidn't have this information. They'd fly the bombers over and the weather would close in. And they couldn't droptheir bombs because they didn't know where the hell they were at." On one occasion the Northland got so stuck inthe ice it had to blast its way out, fingers crossed, with 500 pounds of dynamite. No one knew if the ship would holdwhen the ice blew. "The Northland — boom! — went up in the air, the ice started breaking all around, chips flying. It was a big mess below," he said. On one of the raids with the Army, thick ice prevented the Northland from movingright in. The crew finally sent Army troops and some Coast Guard guys in on foot. They carried in all the supplies, then hiked to a crest at the back of the island. Army commandoes were supposed to top the crest the next morningand raid the radio station. "What happens is, they come charging over the hill to raid the radio station and here's ourguys out there waving, 'Don't shoot! Don't shoot!' The ice had moved out — ice moves. And so our ship pulled rightup almost to shore. They put the motorboat over, they went in, the Germans surrendered, they took them aboardship," he said, "And then the Army comes charging over.”

Joseph Holoubek: "So iced up we couldn't use it.

The Lakeside Press Retired Employee’s Club

On a cold blustery January day (Jan 11, 2011) 12 retirees showed up for breakfast at the Village Inn Restaurant.Per usual, we told each other stories of what was happening in and around Harrisonburg. Twonew members - - joined us. The next meeting will likelybe held on February 8 in the lunchroom of the Harrisonburg plant ...so retirees don't miss thisopportunity to see what's happening in our old book making grounds! Below are pics of someof the longer term members of our retiree club.

Gallatin, TNChicago (WB / Gallatin Oper Serv)Hi there, just a few lines for an update on the Slepski clan. On Oct. 1, and I celebratedour 50th wedding anniversary. The Bishop of Nashville had the Mass and our kids threw us a wingding at our Parish hall. Lots of memories and fun - the joint was jumping. A group of Gallatinretirees are meeting on the 2nd Wed. of the month for lunch at Cracker Barrel. The group is smallbut growing - lots of war stories get chewed up with the dumplings and corn bread.
