We had a great turnout of 17 members for our Primary

Race Officer (PRO) training at the club on February 25th. John Barber, Frank Pontious, George Dewhirst, Walt Gnann, and John Fisk have been carrying the responsibil-ity for our race committee leadership over the last few years. Call for new River Rats!

BYSC is looking for new River Rats! These specially trained club members, who live to spend time on the river and share its beauty with others, manage our club races and regattas. Wearing their trade-mark yellow t-shirts, they set the race course, start the races, record the finishes, help capsized sailors, manage the marks and keep the competition running smoothly.

Training for River Rats is at our Spring and Fall Club Racing Series races, starting every year in April. Roles include PRO, signal boat com-mittee members, mark and safety boat skippers and crew. Our goal is to have the best race management team in SAYRA, with enough members so we always have a full roster and no one has to work too often. And it's working! The River Rats get big kudos every year at the Lowcountry Regatta and the regional and national regattas we are invited to host at our club.

We’ll be talking about all the details at a meeting on Saturday,

March 17, 9 to 11:30 am at the club. We’ll discuss signal, mark and safety boat duties, answer your questions and get you scheduled to start working on the water!

Bring your calendar, your t-shirt size, your ideas and your questions. See you on Saturday the 17th at 9am!

Call John or Marge Barber, 525-1316 or 575-8998, if you have questions. See you soon!

Top 10 reasons to become a BYSC River Rat:

10. It’s great exercise.

9. You’ll be part of a team with

a mission.

8. You can add new skills to

your resume.

7. You’ll have a great view of

the racing.

6. You’ll be a part of exciting

river rescues.

5. You’ll make new friends.

4. You’ll be an insider.

3. You get a free t-shirt.

2. You get to share sea stories

(and refreshments) after the

races.

1. You get to tell the sailors

where to go!

These are some of the original BYSC River Rats conducting races in front of town in 1966. They are standing on the marina dock where the waterfront park is today. In the background you can see the screen porch of the Beaufort Yacht Club that used to extend out over the water. That was removed when the park was built, but the white two story building behind it still houses the Beaufort Yacht Club at the end of West Street and on the edge of the park. As one old timer told me when I asked why the Yacht Club stopped sailing activities, he said “I think they liquefied.” I hope that doesn’t happen to us.

PHRF Series Update The PHRF racers managed to get two races in on Saturday Feb 11th - one on long and one on the short course. Weather forecast did not look good, but seven boats started each time. The rain kept off, until minutes after the fi-nal race finished! It is hard to believe that we are now into our third year of the Performance Handicap Racing Fleet (big boat) racing at the BYSC. The series has gone from strength to strength. We regularly have seven or more boats start each race. Currently have twelve boats registered for the Frostbite Series. In the first series back in 2010 we sometimes only had two boats starting! Having said that, when I look around the Club grounds, I see there are a good number of sailboats that are rarely used, and would make excellent PHRF racers. Same goes for some nice looking boats swinging on their moorings that could potentially do well racing in a PHRF series. I know there is only so much time to go sailing, and things seem to get in the way too often. The reason I signed up in the first place was because I rarely used my boat…I was too busy painting (my old house) or in the yard, or doing something other than sailing! The local wildlife loved my Catalina, birds nest in the sail cover, Mud Doppler’s building nests inside. So I figured if committed to the first se-ries, at least it would get me on the water on Friday evenings for six weeks. Our first races were not good - we were pretty bad! But over the weeks we improved the boat and our sailing skills, to eventually win races and the first se-ries. It does not matter if you have never raced in your life before, so long as you know the basic sailing rules of the road, and try stay out of the way of other boats, you will be fine. Over the weeks, you will improve you sailing skills, and hopefully your boat. There is a wealth on knowable sailors in the club, and most are only too willing to give advice or help you out. We have three more Saturday’s to come on out and enjoy your boat. 3/Mar, 10/Mar and 17/Mar at 1:00pm start time. Or you could keep on painting, raking leaves, or go shopping! If you would like more information on PHRF racing, please contact Everett Ballenger (843) 521-7977 or e-mail to [email protected]

The March 2nd First Friday is being

hosted by Alan & Joan Dechovitz. This month’s theme is Margaritaville. There will be margaritas and Jimmy Buffet themed fun. Wear your flip flops, key west "fashions" and favorite parrot head hat. Bring your favorite Islands themed snack or a covered dish item to share. The funs starts at 6pm.

March Auxiliary Committee Report

February’s dinner meeting was well attended and once again combined a fun social event while moving ideas forward for improving our club. Many thanks to Kristi Rushing, Mike & Esther Long, Martha & Steve Weeks, Monica Nichols, Lisa Presnell, Barbsie Brown and Joan Decovitz for putting together the delicious Lasagne dinner everyone enjoyed.

At this month’s meeting, subcommittees sat together and worked on improvements for

our kitchen, ideas for plantings on our grounds, new ideas for social events and card/game playing at the clubhouse, plans of changing our membership directory to digital, and other membership enhancement ideas.

The next meeting is Thursday, March 15th at 6pm. This night will feature heavy

hors d’eourves and a wine tasting. Subcommittees will continue discussions on individual projects and we will also be working on details and looking for volunteers to help the BYSC Board with the New Member Open House to be held April 1st.

Everyone is welcome to join in on the fun. Great way to meet people and get more in-volved in your club!

Hope to see you there! Sue Hamilton , President, BYSC Auxiliary

Spring is starting to show its face here in Beaufort, and I am sure that most of you are excited to get out on the water to enjoy the weather (if you haven’t already!).

In order to strengthen our membership, BYSC needs your help. The office receives member-

ship inquiries from the general public, but as a member-oriented organization, most of our new members come from existing member referrals.

We will be having our annual “Open House” on Sunday, April 1st, and I want to give you this op-

portunity to refer potential members so that we can formally invite them to this event. If you have friends, neighbors, or colleagues who you feel would fit in well at the Club, please invite them to the Open House and try to attend with them. If you cannot attend, please send their informa-tion to the office by email [email protected] or telephone 522-8216

Thank you in advance for your help in making the Open House a successful event and ensur-

ing the continued improvement of OUR Club. If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to call me at 838-2505.

Best regards, Marvin Day 2012 Membership Chair

Two additional moorings were added to the BYSC mooring field, bringing the total to 14. The Army Corps of Engineers and SC OCRM have informed us that our mooring field is now at maximum capacity. One of the new moorings is shown at the left, weighs ~8,000lbs, and utilizes 3/4 inch steel chain. There is currently a short waiting list of members who wish to lease a mooring.
