The City of Austell may be forced to cut its budget a second year Mayor Joe Jer- kins told the Austell business Association in February. “We cut the budget $700,000 last year and we will have to cut it again this year,” Mayor Jerkins said. The city’s budget is about $11 million. Jerkins attributed some of the increased costs to health insurance. “Our health insurance has gone crazy,” he said, increasing 3.7 per- cent in the past year. “We haven’t given a raise for five years but we haven’t had any furloughs or layoffs either.” In a department by depart- ment rundown of activity over the past year, Jerkins said that the city’s Police Department is busy, although fines are down. The fire department responded to 876 calls and 25 structure fires and main- tained a 3.83 minute response time. “That’s a good response time and it saves lives,” he said. The city is still feeling the effects of the 2009 flood that put 700 houses underwater. The city has spent $1 million as part of a federal buyout of 23 homes and so far has removed 20 of them. “We can do another 61, if they provide another round of funding,” the mayor said. “It’s still going to take couple more years to get it all cleaned up.” The mayor said. Another 90 homes are still in bad shape. City Judge Ken Nix is running title searches to find the owners. In better news, the mayor said that $600,000 has been spent to revamp Legion Field, “to put it back better than before.” State and federal money along with dona- AUSTELL MAY NEED TO MAKE MORE CUTS IN NEXT YEAR’S CITY BUDGET tions from Lowe’s and Georgia Power helped rebuild the field. A new senior center is being built by the County to replace the one at Legion Field. The city-owned Threadmill mall is 95 percent rented and the Austell Store is leased. The downtown streetscape project will be expanded to cover the north side of the tracks through a $510,000 grant. Jerkins had high praise for the SPLOST programs that brought in $4.6 million. The city has ordered a $450,000 new fire truck that will arrive in August, along with five new police patrol cars. The city’s 911 system will also be upgraded. “ SPLOST is a good thing for us,” Jerkins said. Jerkins also noted that Austell city tax rate of 3.12 bills is the lowest in the County. After the County deducts three mills on the Cobb tax bill for fire service, “Our tax bill is almost nothing,” he said. Spring is just around the corner and the Historic Mableton Community Garden, located on Floyd Road across from the Mable House, is planning for the upcoming season. CELEBRATION OF OUR MARRIAGE

By Cathy Shattles LipsettEditor/Publisher

He is a morning person and I’m a night person. He likes spicy food and I like plain and boring. He’s hot natured and I’m cold. He likes his office messy and I have to have things neat. Yet, we are a team; soul mates; best friends; and a couple.

We met in college and have been together ever since. We have gone through many stages in our life together, each one exciting and wonderful.

As Allan and I celebrate a very special fortieth wedding anniversary this March, I realize that we have now moved into the grandparent stage of life. Funny, though, I don’t feel any older than when we were in the newlywed stage. Okay, so maybe a few more aches and pains; a little less energy to climb mountains; but no less in love.

I think our marriage grows stronger every year because we continue to move together through each phase of life; in tandem but with our own interests and hob-bies; a couple with our own individual iden-tity. For most of our married life we have worked together; lived together; had meals together; worshipped together; and enjoyed vacations together. We have laughed, cried, celebrated and grieved…together.

Shortly after the newlywed stage, we became business owners; a newly formed team in a new community. These were the years of centering our lives on owning a newspaper, learning to run a business, becoming involved in the community and enjoying stolen moments for short trips to the nearby beaches rather than long vaca-tions.

Almost ten years into our marriage, we became parents and our world turned on the orbit of our precious children. We still owned our weekly newspaper with all that it entailed but children became our primary focus. With the schools in the area not being what we wanted for their education, we sold the news-paper and moved to Cobb County. Thus began the next phase of our marriage. Our world was one of family dinners; family worship, family vacations; PTA meetings; Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts; baseball and ballet.

In Cobb County, most of the next ten years were our political years. Our lives were still centered professionally around journalism, with Allan as press secretary for Rep. Newt Gingrich and me as Marietta School Board Member and Public Relations

firm owner/consultant. We each had our separate roles to play but each supported the other in the marriage, as parents, and profes-sionally. These were the years of being the ones quoted in the press rather than the ones writing the stories.

After our political lives, with our chil-dren growing up and off to college and then married, we settled into running the public relations firm and, eventually, also returning to newspaper ownership. We became empty nesters, with more time for a week-end visit with our children and the occasional longer vacations. However, the first time we went away for a weekend without having to co-ordinate our time with our children was rather confusing.

Now we’ve entered a new phase of our marriage, bringing all the components of our past lives together: journalists; newspaper publishers; parents; and now grandparents. Each phase has been exciting, but with the addition of our children, our in-law children and now our granddaughters, life becomes even more precious.

MT. HARMONY BAPTIST SPRING CELEBRATION

Mt. Harmony Baptist Church, 561 Veterans Memorial Highway, Mableton, will hold its annual Spring Celebration Sunday, April 1 from 1 - 3 p.m. We will have our traditional egg hunt along with bungee jumping, obstacle course, 24’ dual slide, character drawing and a DJ.

Covered Bridge Church, the newest church in Atlanta’s Smyrna / Vinings / Mableton suburbs had a spectacular Grand Opening on March 4. In September, God led two churches to join forces and create one unique church. Through this merger, a church in the West Cobb area (westcob-bchurch.com) sent some of its best leaders to start Covered Bridge Church (CBC) at 225 Fontaine Road. Mableton.

Both West Cobb Church and Covered Bridge Church are connected at the hip. Covered Bridge Church benefits from this relationship because we have the energiz-ing excitement you find in a new church, coupled with the resources and leadership you find in a cutting-edge, established church. We enjoy wise leadership, incred-ible worship, dynamic teaching (no video, it’s all live), and amazing attendees with servant hearts.

We also love our community and want to invest our time and money to see it become an even better place to live. We’re all about ‘serving our world’ and we’ve got a variety of projects going on to make that happen. We feed the homeless every week in downtown Atlanta, help struggling families in local schools, serve immigrants in mobile home parks, partner closely with a local thrift store, support new and strug-gling churches around the U.S., sponsor and train churches in Belarus (commu-nist country, former USSR), and we sup-port (and built) a children’s home in South Africa.

For more information, check the website at coveredbridgechurch.org, look around the blog and email us with ques-tions at [email protected]. In the meantime, you’ll get a much better feel for us if you check out our Beliefs and Distinct DNA. We look forward to your visit! Service is at 10:30 and we welcome you to come and visit an Adult Connection Group at 9:30.
