Winter can be a challenging time for Ohioans in the motorcycle industry. Even with our constantly changing weather conditions, most riders have their bikes away for the season. For those of us in the business, it can be an especially frustrating time after the holidays. Business can be slow, with everyone yearning for Spring and warmer riding.

I believe that the best practice for those in the industry - is similar to those that wrench at home. Winter isn’t a time for complacency - it’s the time when you can break down and overhaul your bike without losing time that could be spent out riding. It’s time for projects and planning. For those of us here at Thunder Roads Ohio - it’s been a busy season as we’ve undertaken more then a few projects while we’ve been snowed off the roads.

Most of our time has been spent working on developing our team. We’ve added new reps all across the state and are still adding more. You’ll find that many of these reps are folks you already know in the riding community. All are passionate about riding and look to represent us well in their areas. We also benefit from the new ideas and experience that these team members bring.

For instance, this issue also introduces a new local music component to the magazine, showcasing bands all across the state that riders might enjoy. These are “biker friendly” bands that you might catch at bike nights and rallies all summer long. This effort is spearheaded by “Jinx” - one of our newest Road Reps. Her passion for local music has her working with bands from Cincinnati, to Columbus, to Cleveland and everywhere in between. We are launching with a small sampling of shows to let everyone get a taste of what’s to come. If you have a bar or venue that hosts local music - send us an email at [email protected]

I’ve never been more excited about the potential of this magazine as we grow both through the addition of new members to the team - and with the addition of new sponsors. It all comes together each month in this convenient package we call THUNDER ROADS OHIO - which you’ve made Ohio’s #1, most requested, Biker Mag!

Thank you for your support!

As told by the Iron Cowboy

The WinTer shoWs and WaTering holes

Admittedly I always have mixed feelings when I look at the calendar for January and February. It’s Winter Show Season! I love the opportunity to catch up with friends that I haven’t seen since we were out riding last season or the out-of-towners that I see every year at the shows. However, in our business - there are just a lot of shows to cover! So we end up with 6-8 weeks worth of shows to hit every weekend. Many of these shows are 12 hours a day, and that makes for long days! The

advice I give myself is the same that I tell others - don’t feel like you have to hit them all! Just hit the shows that you feel are worthwhile. Far too many promoters believe that if they simply call it a bike show we will come. Unfortunately, in many instances they are correct. We as bikers seem to jump at any chance to break out of the house and hang with other riders. I would encourage everyone to vote with your dollars and make sure that you are getting your money’s worth. If a promoter is asking for a $15 cover charge (and it’s costing you another $8 to park) you should see something more then you would at the local dealer or garage sale.

Don’t get me wrong - there are some GREAT winter shows that leave my head spinning with ideas for the coming season. I am simply amazed by how some of the bike shows continue on - while offering relatively little for the stiff entrance fees that command.

If you’re suffering from cabin fever and really want to catch up with riders - simply head to the same watering holes you visit while riding during the summer. Chances are that many of the same folks are there. It’s a great break from the winter blahs - and these local businesses can use your support far more then some of the “shows”.

WaTch Who you suPPorT.

Along the same lines, I’d like to caution everyone when it comes to blindly supporting every charity event that comes along. Let me preface by saying that there are a lot of tremendous folks out there doing amazing work to support those in need. Many of these earth bound angels do so without the support of big organizations and corporate baking. However, we as bikers need to be aware of the fact that the rest of the world is slowly realizing how big hearted we all are. That makes us a great target for scammers and those looking to make an easy buck.

We recently discovered that a “colorful” self-proclaimed promoter that had been putting on local motorcycle benefits wasn’t exactly all that he said he was. For years he had been hosting local bike shows in the name of a nationally known charity. It turns out that this national charity had no idea who this guy was! It was only after a few concerned veterans contacted the national organization that this all came out. Now I have no idea what this fellow was doing with the funds he raised - but it wasn’t going

hanging with some folks at the easyriders show in columbus. (Photo bob mazur)

where most of his supporters thought it was.

Please don’t hold back from supporting the local charities that desperately need - and deserve your support. Just be sure that you are supporting folks that are in fact genuine in their efforts. If you see something that makes you hesitate - don’t hesitate to ask questions.

We get flooded with requests to support countless charitable events and fund raising efforts. Just due to the fact that we operate in the real world and I haven’t won the lottery - we can’t support them all. So when we get behind something - we want to make sure that it’s a worthwhile cause. We make every effort to make certain that the causes are credible and the organizers are legit. If it’s a “charitable” event that never seems to support any charities - you most likely will not see it in the pages of Thunder Roads. If it’s an organization that solicits funds for riders, but seems to spend more on cool gear or fun stuff for the organizers - then you most likely will not see it in the pages of Thunder Roads. We aren’t perfect or all knowing though, and we welcome your input. If you think that we are supporting someone or something that you have questions about - let us know! Similarly, if you are involved in or aware of a great group that could use our help - let us know! We are in this together, and we welcome your input!

facebookWhen we cover an event - we take a lot of pictures. We can literally take hundreds - if not THOUSANDS of shots at any given show, ride, or bike night. Not

all of them are worth sharing, but a lot of them might just interest you. Unfortunately, we can’t fit them all into the magazine though. Even if could expand the

magazine - you wouldn’t want to get a phone book sized guide every month! So instead, we put a lot of the pictures online.

If you have a computer with internet or even just phone that supports the facebook app, make sure that you visit and like our facebook page. As of writing this we have over 12,000 registered fans and growing every day. We also have regional

and special interest pages that bring our total facebook base to over 25,000 active followers. We think that’s pretty cool and allows us to interact with an incredible number of readers on a daily basis. Even while we have snow on the ground, things are hoppin’ on our facebook pages. We feature hundreds of custom bikes and active discussion on a wide range of topics of interest to riders. It gets even more exciting as riding season hits full swing. We will be posting events and updates daily, as well as sharing photos and coverage of events we attend. If you’re on facebook and not on our page, you’re missing out!

So stop by and “like” us at www.facebook.com/thunderroadsohio

The PisTon PoWer shoWOne show that we whole heartedly support and recommend is the I-X Center Piston Power Show - which combined with Cleveland’s long running Auto-Rama show this year. It’s hard to imagine anyone packing more into a

show then this one. When it comes to seeing more bikes, cars, trucks, even planes - you can’t beat it! (PistonPowerShow.com)

We caught up with Steve Legerski, I-X Piston Power Show Manager for a few and asked him about the show.

“We have had a lot of great things recently happen. On February 5, 2013, we announced that Summit Racing Equipment became the new title sponsor of the event and that Lincoln Electric became the Presenting sponsor of the show. The show will officially be called The Summit Racing Equipment I-X Piston Powered Auto-Rama Presented by Lincoln Electric. The main show floor is filling up quickly. As a matter of fact it is so filled that we are almost to capacity in the South Hall too. This year’s show will exceed expectations and will feature 1,000+ vehicles filling more than a million square feet of the I-X Center!!!!! BIGGER IS BETTER!!!!”

It’s a big show - so it deserves a big name as well! In terms of

look for plenty of show pics in upcoming issues and on our facebook page.

bikes - there are a number of established names taking part. Our friends over at Beckner’s Custom Cycles will be coming to Cleveland along with fellow central Ohio builders - Justified Defiance. Justified has a cool hardcore approach to building bar hoppers and hot rods that is setting a new standard. Strong Arm Customs from Flint Michigan and Moto Rod from Southern Ohio will also be displaying creations in iron. We had a few of the Moto Rod bikes across from us at The Easyriders show in Columbus, and they were pretty cool.

Thunder Roads Ohio and our friends from Power Sport Institute will once again be set up together for the weekend. You can stop by and meet some of the instructors and students - and see some of the amazing bikes that they have created. Ultimate Brush Off Judge - Pat Downey will also be at the show demonstrating some air brush wizardry. You can even try a hand at it - with their interactive display. It’s all pretty cool. And if the weather allows - ride your bike to the I-X Center for the show. Ohio Bike Week will pick up the tab for parking!

W hen it comes to riding tips I can think of NO ONE more respected in the business than Nick Ienatsc, Chief Instructor at the Yamaha Cham-

pions Riding School (YCRS) and purveyor of Fastersafer.com. If you don’t have his book Sport Riding Techniques, get it, no matter what you ride.Nick is straight shooter, who doesn’t edit his passion and love of the sport of motorcycling to fit into anyone’s politi-cally correct box. I’ll share with you my conversation with Nick “Myth Busting: Radius and Miles per Hour.”“Brenda, I try to keep my ‘Myth Busting’ from getting per-sonal. But this isn’t tennis. One tennis coach teaches two-hand backhands. The other doesn’t. Is anyone gonna die from either of these coaches’ opinions? No.Is anyone gonna die from bad riding advice? Yes. They already did. They will again this weekend. There’s an Australian bike magazine I used to get. In it, the Editor writes terrific tips on everything from maintenance to city riding. I don’t know the guy, but I can sense his en-thusiasm and I like it. But every now and then he ventures into performance-riding advice. Keep in mind that he has three or four columnists who are extremely well-known in the racing community because they are extremely success-ful, seriously talented. But despite this pool of talent on his staff, this Editor writes his own version of reality and phys-ics, a version that falls apart in an awful mess just about the time a rider really needs it.To be specific: This Editor wrote that you should increase throttle when you get into a turn too fast because the in-creasing throttle affects the bike’s swingarm geometry and will help the bike turn. This is 100-percent incorrect. And you can prove it to yourself.Get your bike into a parking lot and ride in a circle of any size. Hold constant throttle and constant lean angle to hold a constant radius. Now, gently roll-on the throttle and do your best to maintain the same lean angle (not the same radius, the same lean angle). What does your radius do? Tighten or open? Now ride steady throttle and steady lean angle again. Gently close the throttle and maintain the same lean angle and pay attention to what your radius does.Okay, go do that. Are you back? So when I write and talk about “radius equals mph” you can now nod your head…not because I said so, but because you have proven it to yourself. When you open the throttle in the circle, what would you have to do to maintain the same radius as steady throttle? Yes…add lean angle. We make a point on fastersafer.com and at YCRS to equate “lean angle” with “risk”. So increasing throttle wants to open your radius, but you are then

adding risk to keep the bike on the same radius. Scary…and the faster you ride or the tighter the corner, the worse it gets. I want to teach you riding techniques that work when the pace is up or the grip is down. The Editor’s version of what the bike was doing was about as wrong as it gets. Increasing throttle moves weight to the back of the bike, extending the forks and opening your steering-geometry numbers. Mile-per-hour comes up. The bike begins to run a wider radius at the same lean angle. Are you beginning to see how new riders crash their brains out when presented with the instruction this Editor and others offer? “If you’re into the corner too fast, open the throttle and push on the inside bar.” That’s taken ver-batim from a new rider’s school my friend attended.Hello guardrail…or if you’re in a right-hand corner with oncoming traffic: Hello front bumper, windshield, roof, trunk, pavement, hospital…morgue?

This Editor’s written advice will sit around riders’ homes and public libraries for years. It will be passed on as gospel to sons, nieces, friends, students. And it’s wrong. Dead wrong.

Slowing a motorcycle tightens the radius of the corner at the same lean angle (risk). This Editor’s advice has a rider using the exact opposite con-trol we are advising. We say, “When you get into a corner too fast, leave the throttle shut, feather your brakes, keep looking through the corner.” Accelerate? Only when you can see the exit and take away lean angle. Please read that last paragraph again. Please…so we can improve this sport’s safety record, grow motorcycling and increase riding technique to the level of modern motorcycles and tires. You know what I’m beginning to believe? No riding advice is better than most of the riding advice we hear and read these days. Do any of you add throttle in your car/truck/bus/van/go-kart if you get into the corner too fast? No! Yet “riding instructors” and this Editor with a world-wide mouthpiece insist that you do.They’re wrong…even in a parking lot.”Ride ON! - Brenda Fox, Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneyswww.russbrown.com

Do you plan to ride the world’s fastest production motorcycle up on one of the world’s most-fun roads? If so, you must master the brakes because of this very simple mantra: More Speed, More Brakes. The upcoming corner won’t change for you, so you must adjust your speed to match its radius...and that means mastering the brakes. Speed isn’t the killer...the killer is a lack of control. No brakes is no control.

A fter 13 years of racing with the ALL HARLEY DRAG RACING ASSOCIATION (AHDRA) I was very saddened by the news that they would cancel the 2013 AHDRA Series. Due to the loss of key sponsors, it was no longer feasible for them to operate this

season. The WHD Racing Team will be modifying their 2013 racing schedule and will be focusing their efforts on the NHRA and the AMRA Harley-Davidson drag racing points series for this upcoming season.I have had some great times and success in the AHDRA Series, and I cherish the memories of racing with great competitors and friends over the years. It is hard to see them go but

in these tough economic times you never know what can happen. On a brighter note now we are taking all of the best Harley-Davidson drag racers from 2 different racing sanctions and now combining them into 1 which should hopefully create a platform for bigger events and the best competition possible. Here is what our revised schedule looks like at this point.

Thunder Roads Ohio is proud to announce that this summer; we will once again be hosting a state-wide, summer-long riding challenge hitting the coolest riding destinations and

events across Ohio, presented by Ohio’s #1 Biker Mag - Thunder Roads Ohio! This is a riding challenge like no-other and features great prizes every month!

18 Thunderroadsohio.com Thunder roads® magazine ohio

Page 21: March 2013

The way it works

Each month Thunder Roads Ohio will announce a list of Thunder Run Stops each month. These stops are selected based upon the recommendations of our readers and confirmed by our editors. Riders can then hit these locations and present their Rider Cards in order to register at each stop.

Once a Rider has registered at the stop - their Card number is then entered into the drawing

for that stop. Thunder Roads will then select rider checks-in’s randomly each month from across the state for special prizes and incentives.

Prizes are developed by both Thunder Roads and our sponsors - allowing for some exciting options. They may include stays at exciting stops, riding gear or accessories, gift certificates, cash, and even the opportunity to win a motorcycle!

The beauty and simplicity of this program is that anyone can win with any check-in, but your chances of winning are increased by the amount you ride! The dedicated rider treking across the state has a greater chance of accumulating prizes - but the couple that can only get out a few days a month to ride can also win! Every check-in counts as an entry in the “drawing” - so if you hit 40 stops in a month, you have twice as many chances of winning as someone that only hits 20. The more you ride - the more opportunities you will have to win! That’s the whole idea - to encourage everyone to get out and ride!

State and Stop PrizesEvery month the TRO staff will randomly select winners from the check-ins. Some prizes will be specific to the particular stop - and usually sponsored by that stop. For instance, a leather shop may award a custom leather vest to someone visiting their store during the month of June. That would be a prize specific to that stop and only riders checking in at that location would be eligible for that prize. Other prizes will be state wide, with everyone checking in at any location eligible to win!

The winnersIf your check-in is drawn, Thunder Roads will post your card number both online and in the magazine. Riders will then have at least 45 days to “claim” their prizes. For state-wide prizes, winners will often have the opportunity to select from a number of prize options. For instance, a rider might have the option of winning a biketoberfestÒ rally Package that includes accommodations and extras for attending the Fall Rally. If that rider isn’t able to take advantage of that prize - they might opt for a Premium leather Jacket instead.

• Riders are able to win multiple prizes - based upon the drawing of their check-in’s.

• Some prize drawings are specific to only check-in’s for the particular month - while others prizes are drawn from check-in’s season long.

• ALL CHECK-IN’s remain in the system for end of the season prizes!

• Riders are able to check-in once a week at a stop (Monday-Sunday), for a maximum of 4 check-in’s per month (not counting bonuses).

BONuS Check-in’s!The 2013 Buckeye Thunder Run is supported by our sponsors, so we want to encourage everyone to support them in turn. For that reason, we will issue a BONUS CHECK-IN to riders spending $10 or more at the stop. The bonus criteria may be adjusted at some stops to accomodate riders or particulars of that stop. Specifics of each stop will be listed each month in Thunder Roads as part of the Stop Listing.

It’s really that simple!1. Get your Ohio Ride Card.

2. Get the list of stops each month from your Thunder Roads Magazine, the website (ThunderRoadsOhio.com), or facebook.

3. Ride out to these stops and show them your card.

4. And then you win cool prizes, including cold hard CASH!

The first step will be for riders to register for their Thunder Roads Ohio Ride Cards. A number of select locations will serve as Registration Centers. Riders can easily register at these points – free of charge. They will then receive their Ride Cards.

Please noTe - You can still use your 2012 Ohio Ride Cards. All Ride Card registrations carry over.

Thunder Roads will also be registering riders for Ride Cards at specific events throughout the year as we distribute magazines. Key events, such as Ohio Bike Week or Bike Nights will have special booth for Ride Card registrations. In most cases, we will be offering special incentives both for those registering for the cards and those checking in with their previously issued cards at these stops.

Thunder Roads will also be working with charities and various non-profit events to include them in the Run schedule as well. This will be an easy means of encouraging participation and attracting riders from outside

the local communities. In many cases, we will have specific prize drawings for those at these events.

The Ride Cards will allow participants to easily and safely check in at all stops. some Thunder roads sponsors will also be offering discounts to readers that present the cards. Thunder Roads will be listing special discounts and offers in the magazine throughout the year as an added value to readers and means of encouraging our partners to offer these extra savings.

Please noTe: Once you have received your OHIO RIDE CARD, you will not be asked to provide personal information or emails at any location for check-in. You simply enter your ride card number!

One key aspect of the BTR is that we will be limiting the number of stops to a reasonable amount each month. We are NOT simply adding anyone willing to write a check. We will be considering stops recommended by our readers and editors, and we will only select those that offer a legitimate interest to riders – making them worth the ride to visit. We are not hosting the run as simply a means of supporting the magazine, but as a fun way to promote partners and cool destinations all across the state.

This is not simply a “Chinese fire drill” or mad-dash across the state. This is a Ride program. It is meant to be a means for readers to discover new riding destinations and enjoy the ride there. In fact, we have designed the program to encourage folks to break out of their local routes and trek to the furthest corners of the state.

Just Get Out and RIDe!One of the really exciting aspects of the program is that the Buckeye Thunder Run can be modified and added to throughout the summer – if not the entire year. We will be adding and dropping stops each month. Readers will be able to nominate stops, we’ll investigate them, and if we agree that it’s a suitable stop – they’ll be invited to join the run. Some stops will only run a few months – and possibly not consecutive. A cool

winery in Geneva might be a stop early in the season, and then we bring them back during the harvest season! We can also modify the run if it turns out that something just isn’t working.

We want to keep things exciting for you – the readers and riders on the

run. We’re bikers and it’s all about the ride. We want to help create fun experiences for you and share some cool spots in our state. And we want to discover new spots as well, which is why we are encouraging everyone to nominate their favorite riding destinations. Again this is not simply a sales tool for us or meant to subsidize the magazine! We have designed this run to entertain and challenge our readers – as well as promote our partners.

As with the magazine itself, the Buckeye Thunder Run is presented through the support of our sponsors and partners all across the state. We have secured several key sponsorships already, but opportunities remain. If your business would like to get involved, this is a great way to promote yourself all across the state in a positive manner. Even if your organization is not a riding destination you might become a sponsor for the tremendous promotional value it offers through the constant media attention it will receive. Obviously this will be a heavy focus within the magazine but we are also working with radio and other media outlets to help spread awareness of the run. Sponsors are able to tap into this network and enjoy great exposure.

We also have a number of unique opportunities for branding - including being featured on contest motorcycles, jackets, shirts, and other opportunities. The exact number and nature of these options will be determined as details are finalized and as the promotion develops over the summer. Sponsors will ALWAYS have first priority in these placements.

Sponsors will also have the opportunity to team up with Thunder Roads to help promote various charity events across the state. The Buckeye Thunder Run is a great vehicle to help promote non-profit events in communities all across the state. With the support of regional and state-wide sponsors – Thunder Roads can help promote these

20 Thunderroadsohio.com Thunder roads® magazine ohio

Page 23: March 2013

community events to a larger audience. Thunder Roads is involved in countless charitable events all across the state already – but with the support of our sponsors, we will be able to assist even more. Partners can assist in the sponsorship of specific events, areas of concern (such as breast cancer, child abuse, or animal shelters), or other specific areas. For more information on sponsorship, please email us at [email protected]

Of course one of the key components in this whole program, second only to the riders themselves, is the stops. The Thunder Roads team has spent a lot of time collecting nominations and researching stops for the Run; but there are undoubtedly plenty of more stops out there. If you have a venue or event that you would like to get involved in the run, please don’t hesitate to let us know about it. If it’s your place, we will get in touch shortly with more information on the run and what’s involved. If you are recommending a spot for someone else – we will reach out to them and let them know they have been nominated. If you can suggest a contact person, that can help expedite the process. You can send information to [email protected]

The 2013 Buckeye Thunder Run will begin in May, with all necessary information and additional details in the May issue of Thunder Roads Ohio. We will also have a complete listing on our website – ThunderRoadsOhio.com and our facebook pages. We will include a listing of registration stops – including a wide variety of events in May; including Bike Nights, Bike Blessings, and rides.

The RIDe kicks off in May!As we mentioned, this is a dynamic event – intended to be tweaked and developed over time. If you have ideas, suggestions, or concerns – please don’t hesitate to let us know. You can email us at [email protected]

Changes From 2012We’ve had changes in ownership and management since last summer’s run, so we feel obligated to make some big changes in the contest as well! The 2013 Buckeye Thunder Run is built upon the same fundamental idea as last year’s - TO GET OUT AND RIDE! - but, we’ve made some key changes in the program.

o We are no longer tracking points - which seemed to confuse many people. It’s all based upon check-ins.

o All prizes are awarded based upon check-in’s. The more check-in’s the greater chance to win cool prizes!

o Bonus “Check-In’s” are still awarded for spending over $10 at a stop, but we are no longer giving a $100 bonus. Some people felt that this allowed riders to “buy” their way to victory.

o Prize Winners are listed every month in the magazine, online, and in our eNewsletters. Winners will have 45 days to contact Thunder Roads Ohio to collect their prize.

o There is no longer a distance bonus, but the more you ride - the more chances you have of winning. Some prizes are restricted only to those riders checking in at a particular location. For instance, we may be awarding a $500 Gift Certificate to riders checking in at a particular dealership. Only riders making the trip to that particular dealership have a chance of winning. For the chance at winning $500 - it might be worth taking the ride to that dealership, especially if it’s a great ride!

If you are planning on taking in any of Ohio Bike Week’s events in June or Thunder on the Strip in Geneva in September or just want to take advantage of some of the great places to ride in our state, you cannot go wrong with a stay at any of Ohio’s state campgrounds. All are motorcycle friendly. State parks offer a variety of sites from full hook-up for those who would like electric, water and sewer to primitive sites for those that just want to pitch a tent. Although the type of bathroom and shower facilities vary at the state parks all are clean and easily accessible in each camping area.

Some of our favorites are east harbor state campground (marblehead/lakeside), geneva state Park, Pymatuning state Park as well as hocking hills in Southern Ohio is also a great place to ride and camp.

Reservations are taken up to six (6) months in advance but you will find that full hook-up sites fill fast particularly around holiday weekends. For online reservations go to www.dnr.state.oh.us/parks or call toll free 1.866.644.6727

Howdy Everyone. It’s been a while but I’m back. Did ya miss me? Here’s a little story of the weird way things

sometimes can connect. Although the entire story would take up way more room than I have here, I’ll try to do the best I can with limited space. If you get a chance to see Ron in person, he’ll be glad to fill in the details. Who could have thought that a chance meeting between a couple guys near the Wurtsmith Air Museum (http://www.wurtsmithairmuseum.org/Museum/museum.html) in Oscoda would culminate in a (literally) larger than life motorcycle, on exhibit in downtown Grand Rapids? One man with some old airplane parts and the other man with a talent/vision that never ceases to amaze me. Well, if you’re familiar with my good friend Ron Finch, you know anything is possible.

Cut to a nice sunny day in the middle of August, my girlfriend Berta and I happened to stop by Finch’s on our travels. Just to say “Howdy” and see what was new. And when you go to Finch’s anything can happen. Ron had just finished up a build and needed some pics for an upcoming gig. Always willing to help out my friend, I was eager to lend a hand. And being the ever vigilant journalist/photographer (that I try to be), I had my camera with me. So after a few hours, a couple locations and a several hundred shutter clicks later, we have the required pictures. More on that in a little bit.

So now, back to our story….. While attending the Grand Opening of the Melvin Motorcycle Museum (http://www.melv inmotorcyclemuseum.com/), Ron met Chuck Goldstrom and was offered a few old airplane engine cylinders. And so just a stone throw away from the museum, Ron acquired some of his newest “found metal” items. These are from an old radial-type engine, but look like they could easily be for your favorite v-twin. Except for one small detail, these things are HUGE!! Well knowing a good thing when he sees it, Ron said “OK”. And so it began……

CHopper at LarGe, By ron FinCH The vision of a towering custom V-Twin chopper was

conceived in June of 2011, when the cylinders from a vintage Pratt-Whitney Radial Airplane engine were presented to Finch from the Wurtsmith Air Museum in Oscoda, Michigan. Finch fabricated the frame, engine cases, transmission, exhaust, rear fender and handlebars. Many of the components were fabricated from “found metal”. The gas tank was created from

two 1950 GMC rear truck fenders. The rear wheel consists of two Fordson Tractor wheels. The headlight is a beauty salon hair dryer, the tail lights are aluminum vases, and the oil tank is made from propane tanks. Look closely...the cycle is meticulously detailed to affectionately represent a functioning motorcycle. The finishing touch a “Finch Custom Paint Job”.

It’s now mid-September 2012 and Chopper@LARGE was ready to take to the highway, heading to Grand Rapids, Michigan

and the ArtPrize (http://www.artprize.org/about). Trying to win some of the $560,000 prize money and competing with over 1500 other artists. This is one of Michigan’s largest art exhibits. And I mean “largest”. Starting back in 2009 it gets bigger every year, no pun intended. As the ‘gallery’ is the whole city. And each artist secures their own venue, and each venue seeks out their own artists. Definitely this is something to check out this coming September. But I digress. So after over 2 weeks and 2 rounds of voting, the winners were selected. And although Chopper@LARGE didn’t win any money, it did finish in the Top 100. Not too bad for

an old biker and some found metals, huh? Well Ron had some help: Gary Maurer of Kustoms, Inc, Ron Harris at Chop Doc’s Choppers, Bill & Bobby at Peerless Metal Works and a lot of Finchmen!

Oh and about those pictures I took. Well they ended up as thousands of 2-sided, color postcards that were handed out at the show by Ron to garner votes for Chopper@LARGE. My work seen by thousands……man it doesn’t get any better than that!! (My Thanks to Ruth Finch for her help in writing this article.) And so now you say, “….gee, I wonder what Finch is up to these days?” Here’s a hint, does the idea of a Million Mile Bike and the name Bean’re mean anything to you? Stay tuned kiddies….

S o you took your 12 hour mandated course to get your concealed handgun license and you’re feeling pretty good about the holes you put on paper. Your

hits were in the ‘general’ area that would cause damage to most humans intent on dealing death to your or a loved ones. You tell yourself that with little, or no, practice you were deemed competent by the state, got your plastic, and now carry either frequently or infrequently. This scenario is the same as taking you basic riding training and immediately thinking you have the skills to immediately ride in rush hour traffic, on the last work day before the 4th of July. Do you have the basic skills necessary to operate your machinery? Yes. Do you have the basic skill necessary to operate your machinery in a high-stress environment of life and death? Most often the answer is no.

I tell my students that your basic Ohio CHL class is the BEGINNING of your training, not the end. Without regular practice of the mind and the machinery you will revert to the lowest level of your training in a life-or-death situation. If all you are used to is standing upright, with both hands on your pistol, doing the ‘Roger Murtaugh neck cock from Lethal Weapon’ and firing a single shot into the head of your assailant I have some bad news for you; You will miss, you will get ventilated, and you will die where you stand. I guarantee you that your murderer will be ducking, moving and spraying many projectiles in your general direction and you , being a stationary target, will be easy to hit. To prevent this from handghappening, you need to continue your training in advanced skill sets, practice those arts on a monthly basis, and train your mind to think defensively.

Ohio has numerous, upper level, gun schools to choose from: Tactical Defense Institute (in Southern Ohio) offers 6 levels of

handgun training and Tactical Weapons Training Group (in North Central Ohio) offers the same. You need to be able to shoot while moving, shoot one handed without using sights, shoot in the dark with a flashlight, using barricades and other objects

as cover. My recommendation is, at the bare minimum, put 50 rounds per month through your carry pistol. Start with the target at 5 feet (3 double taps, reload, 3 double taps in under 8 seconds). Next move the target out to 10 feet (same drill, but under 15 seconds). Now move the target out to 25 feet (same drill but slow down the double taps and do it under 20 seconds). Lastly, move the target to 10 feet and do 6 slow shots week handed, reload, and 6 more slow shots. If you have an outdoor range where you can do things a little more exotic add in moving left on your first magazine, then move right while reloading, then shoot your second magazine. As you well know, just a few inches can mean the difference between life and death. Move! Move! Move!

Dry firing your pistol is one of the most critical drills you can perform. Unload and verify that you have an unloaded pistol. Once unloaded, practice your trigger squeeze, sight alignment, grip, stance, drawing and reholstering and magazine reloads. ALL WITH AN EMPTY PISTOL! All competitive shooters and high-speed, low-drag ninja types, dry fire their firearms to gain proficiency.

Another free training aide is ‘visualization’. Basically put this is imagining yourself in self-defense situations in your basic walk of life.

You visualize the small elements like moving to cover, drawing, assessing and, if need be, aligning your sights and engaging. By doing this your are pre-wiring your subconscious so that if that situation occurs, there will be a pre-built mental pathway of a solution. If this pathway is not build in your mind there is

a greater likelihood that your brain will undergo ‘analysis paralysis’ or commonly put, you will freeze.

There are some new Ohio laws that are taking effect within the next couple of months that you all should know about. Don’t worry! These are good laws that Buckeye Firearms Assoc helped get passed. These laws go into effect 3/27/2013. The first is that you will no longer need a requalification certificate in order to renew your CHL as long as it does not expire before March 27th. But even if it does expire before 3/27 you have a 30 day grace window to renew. The second change is that a firearm is considered loaded IF there are rounds in the magazine and the magazine is in the pistol (or in the cylinder). Gone are the days when your empty pistol is considered loaded just because there was one round in a magazine in your range bag in the back seat. For more details on these

laws and the status of new gun bill proposals here in Ohio check out www.buckeyefirearms.org. It is going to be a big year for good Ohio gun laws!

Consider the Honda CRF150R’s high-performance Unicam® engine with lightweight counterbalancer shaft and drive

gears. Or its fully adjustable Showa® suspension to smooth out bumps while maintaining a high level of wheel control. Thanks to the Unicam® cylinder head, this four-stroke engine is more powerful yet more compact. And that helps improve handling, power and efficiency. And a Pro-Link® rear suspension just like the big boys. In short, even though it’s designed for smaller racers, it’s big on the features you expect from a Honda.

Winning is everything. With its powerful and responsive Unicam four-stroke engine, race-ready suspension and track-designed chassis components, the CRF150B has revolutionised the small-displacement class and become a familiar face on winner’s podiums around the world. The CRF150RB is the ideal tool for inspiring fun-filled exhilaration, confidence and a lifelong taste for winning!

Younger racers may be smaller in stature, but that doesn’t mean they can’t have a giant-sized heart for racing-and winning. So for these younger racers, Honda designed the CRF150R/RB as an integral part of the CRF® racing lineup. This is the full-on racing machine, with a high-output 149cc liquid-cooled four-valve four-stroke engine with exceptional torque and drivability throughout the powerband. The championship-caliber chassis includes race-tuned suspension components with plenty of travel front and rear, all set to take on the toughest tracks around. Over the years and all around the country, the CRF150R/RB has won tons of championships at the highest levels of amateur racing. And that makes it the proven choice for younger competitors who are ready to take their racing up to the next level.

LEPRECHAUN’S SECRET STEW 1 Pkg. of Kielbasa (comes with 2 long pieces per pack, like a left & right that forms a big O)2 Pkgs. of New Orleans Flavor Sausage Links (theseare all in the “sausage section” of your grocery’s Meat Dept. 1 Bag of Very Small Red Potatoes1 Bag of Petite Carrots; pre-peeled, in veggie dept. 1 Can of Kernel Corn1 Large Head of CabbageSalt & Pepper to Taste2 Boxes or Cans of Chicken Stock - unsalted kind1 Cups of Water1 Bottle of Dark Beer (if all you have is light, o.k.) 4 Chicken Bullion Cubes (place in small cup of hot water to dissolve down) 1 Tbls. of pre-minced Garlic (in veggie dept.)1 Small Palmful of Basil 1 Small Palmful of Parsley1 Tsp. of Chili Flakes (add more if you prefer spicier) In a large skillet over medium-high heat, add a large pat of margarine to pan, and chop up your Kielbasa into 1/4 inch pieces. Cut up the Louisiana flavored sausages the same way and fry up with Kielbasa. In a separate Stew Pot, add your chicken stock and water and bullion cube mixture on medium-low. You want a slow bubbling boil. Chop up your cabbage into long strips and take the time to peel apart the layers. Once you put the stew pot lid on, the cabbage will wilt down fast. Either cut your baby carrots into halves or leave them whole; your choice. Add garlic and all spices and corn to the broth. Once your sausages are browned good on all sides, add to the broth. cut your red potatoes in half and add to the broth. Put a lid on this and just let it go for apprx. an hour and half. If you do in a Crock Pot then cook on low for as long as it takes for potatoes and carrots to be soft. While it’s cook-ing; throw in a couple Tbls. of quality margarine or butter; your preference. Don’t forget your chili flakes as you want this spicy, but not hot. There’s a big difference in taste between the two. Serve this up with some really rustic, crusty bread that has been smeared with butter and garlic powder and broiled off in the oven. This is total comfort food and it literally takes like 15 minutes to get it all going and in the stew or crock pot. It’ll have ya’ doing the Irish Jig right in your own kitchen!

BEER & BACON MAC N’ CHEESE1 Box of Large Elbow Macaroni; cooked 5 mins. short or being soft as has to finish cooking in oven. 1 Whole Pkg. of Bacon cooked up; place on rack over sheet pan & cook in oven @ 425 until crispy, dark golden brown. No splatter mess on stove. Easy! 1 Tbls. of Minced Garlic 1/2 Cup of Heavy Whipping Cream3 Cups of Shredded White Cheddar Cheese1 Cup of Shredded Parmessan Cheese1 Lg. Tub of Whipped Philly Cream Cheese1 Lg. Vidalia Onion; large chop; sauteed golden1 Tbls. of Spicy Brown Mustard1 Bottle of Amber or Dark BeerMix all together (except bacon) in your deep baking dish until well blended. Cook at 400 degrees or until top is golden brown. Remove from oven and put in your crisp bacon, leave plenty to sprinkle over top.Serve this immediately piping hot before bacon canturn limp. This is phenomenal twist on old style.

EASTER SUNDAY BANANA’S FOSTERDon’t let the name of this scare you off. Like all of the K.I.S.S. recipes, this is simple & easy. You can do it. 1/2 Stick of Real Butter1/2 tsp. of Brown Sugar1/4 Cup of Banana Liqueur (buy a small, travel sizeat liquor store)4 Bananas; cut in half lengthwise; then halved1/4 Cup of Dark Rum4 Scoops of Premium Vanilla Ice Cream Combine butter, brown sugar & cinnamon in a medium size non-stick skillet. Cook on low until all ingredients are dissolved. Stir in the banana liqueur, then place the bananas in the pan. When the banana sections soten up and begin to brown, carefully add the rum to the middle of the skillet. Cook until rum is hot, then gently tip the pan slightly to ignite the rum. Don’t let this scare you.....this is just the alcohol in the rum burn-ing off. When flame is completely gone, lift the ba-nanas out of pan and place four pieces over 2 scoops of ice cream in shallow bowls. Generously spoon warm sauce over the top of ice cream and serve up nice and hot. This is such an easy dish to make and if you have company over it’s very dramatic when the rum is ignited and everyone goes.....oooooohhhhhhh! Once you do this recipe and see how easy it is, it’ll be one of your favorite show-stoppers. Delicicious too!

“I started by modifying and retunnelling a Suzuki GS450S gas tank to fit over the triple backbone. Then I modified the front fender to match the overall look. I hand built the exhaust and reworked some old Sportster heat shields to work with it. I also built the handlebars, chain guard, and modified the sidecovers. The license plate/taillight bracket is also my own design that I manufacture and sell online. The seat pan and rear cowl were built out of 16guage steel and 1/8” round bar. The seat was then stitched by Seatcover King in Springfield, OH. The paint and bodywork were attacked by Rich Myers of Chopshop Customs also in Springfield, While George Shumway took care of the powdercoating. This bike is a true garage build. Everything was done in my one car garage with basic hand tools in about 9 months. Please check out this and my other projects on my facebook page Shaydaddy Custom Designs.”- ShaneShaydaddy Custom Designs

As Thunder Roads Ohio has focused more and more on the off-road and

adventure segments of the motorcycle market one name seems to ride above all others in terms of absolute domination and an almost cult like following amongst passionate riders - that is KTM.We wanted to get a better understanding of the brand, so we reached out to Brad Copsey, from Clintion County Motorsports - a KTM dealer. (www.clintoncountymotorsports.com). Clinton County Motorsports is a family owned dealership in Wilmington, Ohio that was launched by Brad’s father - Dave Copsey.

Tro: How long has Clinton County been a KTM dealer?

brad (copsey): We’ve been a KTM Dealer since November 2005.

Tro: What prompted you to add KTM to the floor?

brad: Well, we had been enthusiasts since the Mid 80’s when my dad bought

a brand new KTM 500’. And we’ve been pretty much riding them ever since. When we heard that they were looking to add a dealer in the area - we jumped on it! It is something that we had wanted for a long time.

Tro: For someone unfamiliar with KTM - how would you describe them?

brad: There are two fundamental things about KTM that set them apart from just about everyone else. First off - their motto is READY TO RACE and secondly they are a premium brand. Those are the two things key commitments by the company that make all the difference.

Tro: So what does that mean to you - “Ready to Race”.

brad: Ready to Race literally means that you can take it off the floor and and race competitively. It ties in with their commitment to being a premium brand - they have Brembo brakes, hydraulic clutches, they have excel wheels - they just don’t cut corners.

This passion for racing and competition runs throughout the company. Even at the corporate level - they are riders. At times it might even be one of their downfalls - (laughing) they are all riders that happen to run an international company. But at the same time it ensures that they just don’t cut corners on anything!

Tro: Looking across the floor - there are a lot of different bikes from KTM, including some street and the Adventure style bikes. Are the majority of the sales still off-road / motocross?

brad: Overall - more off-road then anything. We do fairly well with the Enduro 690R and we are excited to get the 690 Duke this year. That’s a bike that they had a few years ago - but they have redesigned it. We should be getting them in shortly - but we are already getting phone calls about it.

The 990 Adventures are very popular as well - they are just great, all-around machines.

The 1190RC8R is their Superbike - which is just a fantastic machine. They’ve made a few updates this year - with a slicker clutch and some new colors. But that’s a great bike as well.

Tro: It’s always a sign of the longevity of a bike and their popularity with their owners, when you can’t find them for sale on the websites or auctions used. You just can’t find them anywhere - people seem to hold onto them.

brad: Yeah, they either hold onto them or they know somebody that says - “If you ever want to get rid of that...”

Tro: Now with the Adventure bikes and street bikes - do you see that developing more for you in terms of the total KTM sales? Or do you see that as more of a side thing - with the primary focus staying simply on the motocross.

brad: No, the Adventure market as a whole has huge potential for the entire industry - not just KTM. It has been growing year after year - and just seems to have incredible potential down the road.

Tro: Looking at the European and

48 Thunderroadsohio.com Thunder roads® magazine ohio

Page 51: March 2013

Asian markets - a lot of folks say that the “Adventure Class” compares to how the “Touring / Cruiser” classes seem to be here in America. I believe that BMW’s top selling bikes world wide are their adventure bikes - the GS’s. And certainly KTM has a niche in that market.

brad: Oh yea, KTM is certainly a player in the category. In Europe, KTM is releasing the new 1190 Adventure. There is also a new 1190 Super Duke R - just announced at a show in Milan, Italy. Hoping to see that here in 2014.

Tro: Last year I had the chance to spend some time with John Penton, and really got a better understanding of the Penton / KTM relationship. He certainly was a pioneer within the industry - but it seems as though he really brought KTM into the motocross / enduro market.

brad: Oh yeah, John and Jack (Penton) are still certainly involved in KTM - and that’s a big part of their history.

Tro: So you’re still riding KTM’s these days?

brad: Oh, certainly. I have a 200XC-W and Dave rides a 250XC-W.

Tro: It certainly seems as though many of the hard core riders - especially the older guys - they ride KTM’s on the trails. Why do you think that is?

brad: KTM caters to that market - the riding enthusiast. KTM just makes so many different and unique bikes - they excel are offering niche’ bikes that are perfect for particular riders. Right off the floor its just what you’re looking for. They

offer so many variations at each level - 3 different 350’s, 3 different 450’s...

Tro: This may seem like an obvious question - but I have to ask. How does someone figure out what the best bike is for them?

brad: That depends upon their level of experience and the type of riding that they want to do. There are so many different considerations that go into making sure we put someone onto the right bike. And the bike that they were riding a few years ago may not be the fit for them today. We

spend a lot of time talking and getting to know our customers - in order to make sure we get it right.

Tro: So, your best advice is to get into the shop and talk to your guys?

brad: Certainly, that’s what we do! (laugh)

Tro: Thanks for your time - and we look forward to covering a lot more on the entire KTM lineup over the upcoming months!

Go to any off-road racing event and the popularity of orange dirt bikes is readily apparent. KTM has developed into arguably the strongest manufacturer in the business, but the Austrian company wasn’t always so prolific. Hans Trunkenpolz opened a repair shot in Mattighofen, Austria in 1934 to work on cars and motorcycles. From these humble beginnings, the company would blossom into an industry powerhouse. KTM identifies primarily as a dirt bike maker, and a great portion for that identity and success stems from the large product line that is available now and historically. Even though knobbies are the norm, street bikes have been part of its lineup since the early years, and the company has offered scooters, mopeds, bicycles, ATVs, a sports car and on the horizon are electric dirt bikes. It wasn’t even known as KTM originally, but by 1953, Kronreif, Trunkenpolz, Mattighofen introduced its first production series motorcycle, the R100. The company’s first title was secured shortly thereafter with the 1954 Austrian 125 national championship. KTM first made an appearance at the International Six Days Enduro in 1956 where Egon Dornauer secured a gold medal. Racing continued to be a testing ground for production technology, but next in line was its first scooter, the Mirabell. It started providing a factory team for the ISDE in ’64. As the company continued to expand, the workforce totaled 400 in 1971, and forty years after it was founded, KTM was offering 42 different models Ohio motorcycle importer, John Penton, sourced KTM machines to revolutionize dirt bike racing and riding in the States. Bikes were first shipped to America under the Penton name and started arriving in 1968 with the GS model. KTM would eventually establish KTM America Inc. in Lorain, Ohio in 1978. The decade saw an explosion of the 50cc market – one which KTM has come to dominate on the racing end.

KTM has continued to evolve into other segments of the motorcycle market, but always with the same passion for competition. The

950 Adventure and 990 Duke were brought out in 2003, the same year that KTM entered the fray of 125cc road racing. The Super Duke followed as well as early versions of the RC8 Venom sportbike. Large-bore, twin-cylinder offshoots were starting to become the norm with the 950 Supermoto, 990 Adventure and 950 Super Enduro R breaking ground in ’05. The result was a best-ever year of sales and KTM’s rapid

50 Thunderroadsohio.com Thunder roads® magazine ohio

Page 53: March 2013

expansion into street markets and untapped dirt segments proved worthwhile. Another stroke of genius was the dual-sport EXC line for model year ‘07. For the first time, a mainstream OEM accomplished the seemingly unthinkable task of offering a real dirt bike that is street-legal. Enduro riders everywhere rejoiced.

Today, the Adventure motorcycle market is one of the fastest growing in the world and KTM is one of the clear leaders defining the class from the rough side - while traditional street focused brands are venturing off into the trails.

Do you or your spouse need caregiver assistance? This month we are going to discuss a little known VA benefit (Improved Pension) if you or

your spouse need caregiver assistance. First, bookmark the following website http://www.veteranaid.org/ I will be quoting almost all this info on the Improved Pension from that site as they explain it best. This benefit has been around for over 60 years, but hardly any veteran seems to know about it.

There are 3 levels to Improved Pension. All 3 levels should be applied for by using form 21-526 for the veteran, and 21-534 for a surviving spouse.

Aid and Attendance (A&A) is the highest level awarded to a veteran or surviving spouse who requires assistance with their daily living such as dressing, bathing, cooking, eating, etc.

The applicant must show that while they may not need assistance for everything, they cannot function completely on their own. You do not have to be in a facility to be eligible for this level. The care can be provided in the home by either outside agencies or family members. The A&A can provide up to $1,732 per month of a veteran, $1,113 per month to a surviving spouse, or $2,054 per month to a couple. A veteran filing with a sick spouse is eligible for up to $1,360 per month.

Housebound pension: This is the 2nd level, and the criteria is basically the same. The applicant is not as limited in their need for assistance as someone meeting the needs for Aid and Attendance, but still requires help with daily living activities. A veteran alone must have countable income LESS than $14,457 per year, and a veteran with a spouse must have countable income LESS than $18,120 per year. See the following for determining countable income: http://www.veteranaid.org/docs/income.pdf

Basic Pension. The first level of the Improved Pension. Once a veteran reaches the age of 65, the VA considers and classifies them permanently and totally disabled regardless of their physical fitness. A veteran alone must have countable income LESS than $11,830 per year, and a veteran with a spouse must have countable income LESS than $15,493 a year.

Eligibility: Any war-time veteran with 90 days of active duty, 1 day beginning or ending during a period of war is eligible to apply for the A&A. The individual applying must qualify both medically and financially. To qualify medically, a war-time

veteran or surviving spouse must need the assistance of another person to perform daily tasks such as eating, dressing, undressing, taking care of the needs of nature, etc. Being blind or in a nursing home for mental or physical incapacity or residing in an assisted living facility also qualifies.

Eligibility must be proven by filing the proper Veterans Application for Pension or

Compensation. It will require a copy of your DD-214 or separation papers, medical evaluation

from a physician, current medical issues, net worth limitations, and net income, along

with out-of pocket medical expenses.

To qualify financially, an applicant must have on average less than

$80,000 in assets, EXCLUDING their home and vehicles. See the

reference above for countable income and other info regarding assets.

I first heard about this “un-known” benefit a little over

a year ago, so I personally do not yet know of anyone receiving it.

Check out the veteranaid.org web site if the info I provided is as clear as mud. It still seems like mud to me, so check out their site.

More info on how to apply for it is at http://www.veteranaid.org/apply.php which includes links to forms.

Oh yes, the website is a 501(c)(3), and they do take donations for helping to educate the public on this little known VA benefit.

Of note for post 9/11 veterans is the Veterans Omnibus Health Services Act of 2010. This provides assistance directly to families caring for veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Caregivers receive a stipend for a maximum 40-hour workweek. The American Legion and other veteran’s organizations are trying to get that changed to provide around-the-clock care, especially for veterans with brain injuries. Caregivers receive on average between $600 and $2,200 per month, based on care needs and local wage rates for home health aides in their area. Caregivers may also receive health insurance through the program. For more info check out www.caregiver.va.gov or call their support line at 1-855-260-3274

Next month we will talk about having VA pay to modify your vehicle or motorcycle if you have a VA disability and need the modification to operate your vehicle due to your disability. I’m sure the info about modifying your motorcycle caught your attention! Until next month, possum out!

It’s that time of year - when chaps really are acceptable to be worn anytime you’re riding! So we thought that we would revisit the simple, yet often challenging, task of properly securing your chaps! Thanks to Kathleen Howell, from Thunder Roads

Michigan for the help!

by kaThleen hoWellThunder roads michigan conTribuTor

Here is a great way to secure your chaps and keep them from unfolding or unrolling in your trunk or saddle bag. Thank you to Al Russom at AM Leather in Romulus, MI, for sharing this trick!

1. Lay your chaps on a flat surface, unzipped so that the legs lay open flat against each other. (At any time, you may stop laughing at my 3 foot long chaps. I’m only 5’ 2”.)

2. Fold the belt and buckles in, as shown.

Chaps Folding 101

3. From the top, fold in the right side to form more of a straight line.

4. Fold the chaps in thirds.

5. Fold the left and right sides in towards the center (where the snaps are located), and snap together.

6. Voila! Your chaps are now in a secured bundle.

THUNDER PAWSThunder Paws is an effort by Thunder Roads Ohio to showcase and raise awareness for rescues and shelters across Ohio. Many of these programs are in dire need of assistance and we know that many of our readers would welcome the opportunity to help. Each month we will showcase an organization and some of the animals that they are working to place. If you are working with a shelter / rescue or would like to recommend one for us to feature - please email us at: [email protected]

miami valley PiT creWMission: To cultivate an understanding of the American Pit Bull Terrier through positive education and example… and change the misinformed minds of society one dog at a time! The Miami Valley Pit Crew (MVPC) rescue is a network of volunteer foster homes dedicated to rescue and rehabilitation of abused, neglected, and misunderstood dogs and puppies. We specialize in Bully Breeds: Bulldog Breeds, Pit Bull Breeds, Mastiff Breeds, and any mixes of the aforementioned. We pull dogs from Ohio’s worst kill shelters. We also educate owners and the public, on bully breeds and Breed Specific Legislation (BSL). We specialize in dogs but we respect all living creatures and encourage others to do the same by education. The MVPC evaluates each rescue request to determine the dogs re-homing probability. We want to ensure each dog we take in can be rehabilitated into a family member. We work hard locally to educate bully breed owners and speak out against Breed Specific Legislation.

JennerMeet our own Olympian, Jenner! Miami Valley Pit Crew was contacted about a stray dog running around a neighborhood for weeks. She was hanging out by at school because the kind school employees fed this sweet girl. After we we able to catch this

girl, she was named Jenner because of her running skills! This precious girl is a snuggle bug who genuinely appreciates being brought in out of the cold to be fed and given a warm and safe environment. Jenner is a doll baby who would be such a perfect addition to any home.

eliThis gorgeous hunk of love was pulled from a high kill shelter in January. Eli, his mate and babies were surrendered to the shelter and while his mate and babies went to rescue, Eli had to stay behind

because the rescue had an unfriendly male dog. This happy boy deserves his own family since his was taken away. He is very friendly with other dogs and has been tested with cats. Let’s give this boy his forever home.

sPeeder Speeder and her six siblings were saved from a horrible living environment where their future was not promising. MVPC was contacted and took in the momma and her litter of seven puppies when they were three days old. Speeder, her momma and siblings have

been in a warm and safe home where they have received lots of love and care. They are all super sweet, snuggly puppies.

bayouBayou is a beautiful blue and white, 1 year old, American Pit Bull Terrier, whom we believe was once someone’s pet, and she is very confused about why her life has been turned upside down.

Bayou is a very active girl who loves to run and play. She does great with other dogs, but would do best in a home without cats. She loves kids and bonds very quickly with whoever will give just a little bit of affection.Bayou is eager to please and is picking up her basic commands very quickly. She appears to be housebroken, and can last up to 12 hours in her crate without an accident.

aliceAlice is an English Mastiff mix puppy rescued from a kill shelter. She joined the rescue in August when she was three months old. The shelter planned to euthanize her because she had demodex, a completely treatable skin condition.Alice’s foster mama was so interested in what breeds she had in her that she had a

DNA test ran on Alice. The results were that she is mixed with English Mastiff and Straffordshire Terrier. She has been in a foster home for 5 months and has blossomed. She is a happy, playful puppy who adores people and the other dogs in the home. She is submissive to dogs and to cats. She is crate trained and almost house broken. Alice (or Alli as we call her) knows basic commands and will do anything for a treat! She loves toys and rawhide. Alli will be a decent sized dog! Look at her huge feet! She is completely vetted & is looking for a forever home!

Thank you to everyone that attended the seminar this year. Also thank you to the folks who gave presentations, JOB WELL DONE! Thanks to Ruby and Kolman for running the games Friday night. Thank you to Lynn and Barb for the folders, registrations, organizing the auction. Thank you everyone who went out and got auction items. Thank you to everyone who spent cash on auction items and the games. And last but not least, a big thank you to the sponsors, Mike and Harley and Region 5 for the coffee and Danish, ABATE of Ohio Foundation for lunch, Rod Taylor for dinner, and Ridin’ On and Thunder Roads magazines for ad swaps. If you didn’t make it, you missed one of the most informative and fun seminars that I have been to for a while.

Ed Schetter and I were in Columbus a few weeks back to discuss items we would like to have added into the Transportation Budget. All of the issues we discussed are being considered and researched. We should have an answer by next month’s report which issues make it into the Transportation Budget.

We will be discussing, in the next board meeting, the legislative strategy for 2013. One topic will be the ROW bill. Do we want to reintroduce the bill again? Do we want the same sponsor? Do we need to make changes to the bill? If you have an opinion get with your Region Director to share during March’s BOD meeting, or you can email me at [email protected].

At the seminar this year we discussed pursuing a bill similar to Minnesota’s Road Guarding Bill. This bill would set up training for certified road Guarders (some call this blocking) for group rides. This would be a different type of legislation than we have supported in the past. This bill would be good because it would legalize and properly train riders on a common practice. Since it is a relatively new idea there are a lot of issues to be worked out prior to introducing a bill.

Remember March usually has some good riding weather. Remember that people aren’t looking for motorcycles this early in the year. EXPECT people to not see you. Be careful.

not welcomeRecently i found myself embroiled in a heated

situation in our capital. a national motorcycle event made its annual trip to our fine city. These shows are typically a great opportunity for local chop shops, tattoo artists and many

other motorcycle accessory sellers. This year was almost different. it seems that there was a difference of opinion between the event organizers and a club with a national membership. don’t jump to conclusions, because you’d be surprised as to whom this club is, or what they claim to be.

anyways, this difference of opinion, and the alleged actions of some created a situation where as a policy was instituted to ban the wearing of all club logos from the event. i’m not just talking about mc’s or just anything motorcycle related either. it included any organization logo (except fictional), to include military social clubs, Pastoral clubs, racing clubs, bowling clubs, hell it would have included your grandma’s bridge club if they had matching shirts! as you can imagine the new policy went viral in about 4 hours after it was released. There were immediate calls for a boycott of the event by any and all members of clubs. even the military, law enforcement, firefighter, rc’s as well as many three piece mc’s in the area. imagine that, bikers from complete opposite social circles banning together in unison for a single cause.

Well somehow, as always i got drug into the conversation with the event coordinator. his reasons were valid, and obviously any legal advice is always going to error on the side of caution to protect its client’s interests. i get it. but still it just felt wrong that due to the alleged actions of one, all would suffer for it. i hate that type of reasoning. it’s a chicken @$#! way o

of doing things. if someone screws up and acts a fool, you make them own it. you don’t make everyone else own it. now i won’t go into details of what i was told as this is an active

case, but i do know what i’ve have heard and read with my own eyes. When an organization stands up for its rights i am fully with that. but when an organization is an instigator, then brags about it online in blog forums, and then cries the victim, i have zero respect for that. They do not belong in my world, and i do not recognize them as such.

in the end i will give huge props to the man behind the curtain, the event organizer. he took the full backlash from a ton of clubbers in this city, and never gave up the fight for us. in the end, club colors were allowed and everybody won. Well, except the one club in questions as their colors were still barred from the event. i guess it still amazes me that in this day and age there’s still such fear of everything motorcycle related by the general community. i mean the thought process that just because we allow or don’t allow someone to wear a logo, we are either safe or not safe. i understand that if nobody knows who’s on which team, it’s less likely that idiots will fight each other putting innocent attendees at risk. but in this case that wasn’t even the factor in banning colors. There wasn’t a fear of violence; it was simply to avoid adding fuel to an already active lawsuit. There were hundreds of murders and violent crimes in this city last year, and i don’t recall one being reported to have been committed by a member of any type of club. not one. i’m happy to report that common sense and freedom Won out.... this time.

this is the first time anyone has ever asked me to write about a specific performance and of all the places around the world I have performed, Thunder Roads Ohio couldn’t have chosen a better show for me to write about.

Legend has long been a part of the Alrosa Villa and most people who were fans of hard rock & metal remember exactly where they were and what they were doing the day that Dimebag Darrell Abbott was shot and killed along with several others that tried to protect him and the band. I had just finished a show with my band in Gillette, WY. We had stayed after the bar closed and had several drinks with the owners before heading back to our sleaze hotel. We were all huge Pantera fans and many of our band jokes centered around the Pantera DVD’s that we watched in our free time. We were laughing and making our way back to the hotel in a zig zag pattern from the series of shots we had when we left and collapsed in absolute laughter when we figured out where the key was and managed to unlock our door. As everyone was changing out of beer-soaked and cigarette scented stage clothes, we turned on the TV and the news was describing the entire scene of what happened at the Alrosa that night. Our hero, our friend, and guitar legend was gone. We were immediately sober and visibly shaken. Many people who have met or seen “Dimebag” will tell you that he is an astonishingly talented guitarist, but also just an all-around nice guy who loved people and loved life. He was a bright burning light, but the flames that burn twice as bright last half as long as we all know and many people continue to miss their friend.

Late last year, Jon Clevenger and Mike Hoover met with me to discuss a fund-raiser they were planning for the Make it Fit Foundation which raises money for kids with autism and turrets syndrome. They had asked me about performing at the Alrosa. I took the show immediately. Not only was it for a great cause, but I have always wanted to set foot on the stage where my hero played and stand on the same stage where he took his last breath. Part of it was to feel the energy, and partly to perform with the same energy he would have brought to the stage and carry on that passion in a performance. I knew the night would be incredibly surreal and I left myself completely open to whatever

energy may be still there.

My first impression of the stage had me almost laughing! The main speakers were stacked to the ceiling from wall to wall. It was a massive display and you never see that in venues anymore. It was totally old school and I loved that about it. It creates a visual and lets people know right when they walk through that door what they’re about to experience.....a loud killer rock show. I was totally down with that. It was a fun set up and everyone that was part of the venue was completely helpful. The mood was light. Everyone was calm, but when nightfall came it was a completely different story.

When I came in the back entrance I was immediately rushed to the backstage area by security who had water stocked for us and asked me if I needed anything to make me more comfortable. It was a little chilly so I left my full length coat on and sat on a bench against the wall. No one was backstage except for me. There were various drums that my drummer had left there out of the way. Two

full-length zebra mirrors framed the wall across from the bench and I saw my face across the room. The walls were painted black but all the bands that performed over the years had left their Sharpie art from corner to corner. Much of what was written were shout-outs to Dime and it was obvious that this place had

become a place of worship to many who loved him. There were still bullet holes in the wall. A security guard entered the room and asked if I needed anything again. I asked him if he was there that night and he said yes. He pointed to a place on the floor by the zebra mirror I had just been looking into and told me that one man had died there on the floor protecting Dime. The story became so real. You could almost feel it happening. As he left I felt chaotic and anxious as if I wanted to run out the door but at the same time overwhelmed by the paralyzing sadness that still lingered. All I could do was sit there.

Bands played on...

As the security came to get me for the show, I made a promise to myself and a promise to the spirit of the room. I was going to perform with every ounce of energy I had and leave everything there....in celebration and remembrance to our friend, our brother, Dime. The crowd recognized the energy immediately and joined in the party. Black tooth grin shots flowed freely. No one held back. You never know when your last show is going to be and this was a reminder to always perform as if it were your last. Dime did. We all do.

And the band played on.....

ToP Ten reasons Why gold Wing riders don’T Wave back

10. Wasn’t sure whether other rider was waving or making an obscene gesture ...

9. Afraid might get frostbite if hand is removed from heated grip ...

8. Has arthritis and the past 700 miles have made it difficult to raise arm ...

7. Reflection from etched windshield momentarily blinded him...

6. The espresso machine just finished ...

5. Was actually asleep when other rider waved ...

4. Was in a three-way conference call with stockbroker and accessories dealer ...

3. Couldn’t find the “auto wave back” button on dashboard ...

2. Was simultaneously adjusting the air suspension, seat height, programmable CD player, seat temperature and satellite navigation system ...

and The number one reason gold Wing riders don’T Wave back:

1. They couldn’t see through the glare from the chromed- dash accents

arThur davidson in heavenArthur Davidson, of the Harley Davidson Motorcycle Corporation died and went to Heaven. At the gates, St. Peter told Arthur, “Since you’ve been such a good man and your motorcycles have changed the world, your reward is you can hang out with anyone you want in heaven”.

Arthur thought about it for a minute and then said, “I want to hang out with God.” St. Peter took Arthur to the throne room, and introduced him to God.

Arthur then asked God, “Hey, aren’t you the inventor of woman?” God said, “Oh, yes.” “Well,” said Arthur, “professional to professional, you have some major design flaws in your invention:

There is too much inconsistency in the front-end protrusion.

It chatters constantly at high speeds.

Most of the rear ends are too soft and wobble too much.

The intake is placed way too close to the exhaust, and finally,

The maintenance costs are outrageous.”

“Hmmm, you may have some good points there,” replied God, “hold on.” God went to his celestial Super Computer, typed in a few words and waited for the results. The computer printed out a slip of paper and God read it.

“Well, it may be true that my invention is flawed,” God said to Arthur, “but according to these numbers, more men are riding my invention then yours”.

Inspiration Ask yourself this question: “Will this matter a year from now?” ~ Richard Carlson (Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff).

It is not work that kills men, it is worry. Work is healthy; you can hardly put more on a man that he can bear. But worry is rust upon the blade. It is not movement that destroys the machinery, but friction. ~ Henry Ward Beecher

Hear the meaning within the word. ~ William Shakespeare

A wise man learns by the mistakes of others, a fool by his own. ~ Latin Proverb

How well I have learned that there is no fence to sit on between heaven and hell. There is a deep, wide gulf, a chasm, and in that chasm is no place for any man. ~ Johnny Cash
