Faith Alive is the “umbrella” name for a variety of
courses offered to adults of all ages on Sunday
morning. The curriculum consists of 8 classes which
will be rotated through all 3 hours.
Beginning March 3rd, our fifth rotation of classes will
include:
1st Service (8:30 a.m.) A Family Reunion: Differences between Denominations What’s the difference between a Methodist and a Baptist? Or
a Presbyterian and a Catholic? In this study we will explore not
only what makes each denomination unique but also what we
believe as United Methodists.
Leader: Rev. Karin Kaye
2nd Service (9:45 a.m.) A Family Reunion: Differences between Denominations
3rd Service (11:00 a.m.) Boundaries: When to Say “Yes” & How to Say “No”
Do you have trouble saying no? Are you in control of your life?
What are legitimate boundaries? How do you answer some-
one who wants your time, love, energy, and money? Drs.
Henry Cloud and John Townsend offer biblically-based an-
swers to these tough questions as they show us how to set
healthy boundaries with our parents, our spouses, our chil-
dren, our friends, our coworkers, and even ourselves.
Facilitators: Jeff & Cheryl Buenger

and was elected pope. Newcomers are always
welcome. Call Judy Nickelsen if you have ques-
tions, 634-7616.
Parking is available in these lots on Sunday mornings:

Mission News
MISSION UPDATE
The Garrison Family Myanmar Project
The US news reports of wicked winter weather for many of
you. We hope this letter finds each of you safe and warm in-
side your homes.
We write this month to share about some of the work Craig
has been involved in since we returned from our time in the
States. It’s different.
He is still involved in coordinating people resources, medical
resources, dollar resources, and logistics. He’s an interesting
systems guy. He sees a problem, mentally sees solutions, and
plots a course of action. Craig is still working with Partners
Relief & Development which is a quick response type of
group. What’s changed is the people in conflict for whom he is help-
ing coordinate relief responses. About eight months ago Ara-
kan (or Rakhine) State, located in western Burma, was jolted
by two bouts of sectarian violence, when the majority Bud-
dhist population clashed with the Muslim Rohingya — a
stateless minority group viewed as illegal Bengali immigrants
by the government. Some of these “illegal immigrants” are
descendants of families who have resided in Burma for several
generations.
We have been told repeatedly that these are some of the
most hated people on earth. “Despised,” is a common adjec-
tive used to describe the Rohingya. When the first response
teams had visited and returned, several relief workers
stated, “Sadly, it seems they are their own worst enemy.”
Our neighbor and co-worker, Kath Charman is a nurse. Kath
has responded to many crises in many parts of the world.
Debriefing after her time with the Rohingya she recalled, “Two
things stood out to me. First, they are very violent toward
each other... all day long they were hitting each other with
sticks and shouting.” She continued, “Secondly, not a single
person said “thank you.” She went on to explain that she did-
n’t expect everyone to thank her, but it appeared strange that
not a single mother thanked her. She saw over two hundred
patients.
So in brief, these people are considered, despised, thankless,
violent. Unlike other relief responses, no one is returning
saying, “They are such a beautiful people.” They remind me of the Samaritans. The Samaritans were con-
sidered despised “outsiders” generations after they had
moved to Israel. “They” were non-Israelite. The Burmese are
holding up signs saying, “They” are not Myanmar ethnicity, in
reference to the Rohingya.
Throughout my years of Sunday School education, I thought
the Samaritans were simply a despised people because of
their “mixed blood.” I thought Jesus was trying to communi-
cate that they were misunderstood “Good Guys.” But was
there more to it than bad blood? Was there some legitimacy
to their bad reputation?
What if they brought cultural behaviors such as violence
(they were Assyrian immigrants)? What if the Samaritans
became a bitter and rough people, because they had a
history of rejection?
How similar are the ancient Samaritans to today’s Rohin-
gya? Is there any relevance to us? Why does Jesus relay
the story of the “Good Samaritan?” Why didn’t he tell the
story of the “Oppressed Samaritan?”
This took some pondering. It wasn’t fitting into my child-
hood recollection of the story. We have always been
taught to identify with the Good Samaritan... to be the
champion of the oppressed... but Jesus was communicat-
ing something more than that... something I had never previously considered. He was re-branding the Samari-
tans.
Jesus saw them for what they could become: compassion-
ate, attentive, responsible, sacrificial, heroic. Perhaps he
wasn’t just trying to get the Jews (including his followers)
to see the Samaritans differently, perhaps he was also
changing how the Samaritans viewed themselves; from
victim to hero.
Perhaps their previous labels had become self-fulfilling
prophesies that were generationally passed down. In his
story, Jesus was portraying the Samaritan as an outward-
focused overcomer, not a victim of the environment
around him. So what became of the Samaritans? Many of them recog-
nized Jesus as Savior and were among the first Christians.
(John 4:39-42; Acts 8:25, 9:331, 15:3) Would you pray with
us that the similarities might continue?
So, from this perspective, are we called upon to be the
Good Samaritan? Or is Jesus wanting us to do/be more? Is
Jesus wanting us to find ways to enable the Rohingya to
be Good Samaritans? Hmmm. Worth further considera-
tion.
Thank you for allowing us to be your hands and feet in this
part of the world,
The Garrisons
Rohingya mother receiving a blanket.Rohingya mother receiving a blanket.Rohingya mother receiving a blanket.Rohingya mother receiving a blanket. When our neighbor/co-worker, Kath, returned from the conflict zone, she commented on the hatred against women among the Rohingya. Even the women hated women which was demonstrated by the way they interacted with each other and valued their sons over their daughters.

FAMILY CHALLENGE: Resurrection Rolls
Easter Sunday is March 31st. Use this cooking activity to teach your children about Easter!
Ingredients: 1 Can Crescent Roll Dough, 8 Large Marshmallows, Butter, Cinnamon Sugar
Directions:
• Give each child one triangle shaped section of crescent roll. This represents the tomb. Each child takes one marshmallow which represents the body of Christ.
• Dip the marshmallow in the melted butter and roll in cinnamon and sugar mixture. This represents the oils and spices the body was anointed with upon burial.
• Lay the marshmallow on the dough and carefully wrap it around the marshmallow
• Make sure all seams are pinched together well. (Otherwise the marshmallow will “ooze” out of the seams)
• Bake according to package directions. Cool. Break open the tomb and the body of Christ is no longer there!!

Spring is just around the corner & for many of
us this is a good time to de-clutter our closets,
drawers, etc. If you have travel size soap,
shampoo, toothpaste, combs, pens, notepads,
etc. that are taking up space, you can now un-
clutter those areas & help the Seafarers. Sea-
farers are one of the missions that Purl Girls & Guy serve. This pro-
gram serves the men & women who are on the lake freighters and
saltwater boats that come into the Twin Ports from all over the world.
Hat & scarf sets are made by PG&G. We also include the items men-
tioned above. If you would like to donate any of the items mentioned
please place them in the kitchen off the Memorial Lounge. Please
identify the items for PG&G.
PG&G meet every Wednesday morning from 9 – 11 a.m. in the Me-
morial Lounge. We welcome veterans of knitting & crocheting, as
well as novices and beginners. Please join us for fun & fellowship as
well delicious treats & coffee.

Featured Teachers We want to honor and thank a few of our teachers each month. We appreciate them as they share
their gifts and talents with God’s kids at EUM – and we want to share their thoughts with you!
Jeanie Krejcha - SHOUT How did you come to EUM? My kids went to MDO and Allison encouraged us to come to church. I loved it, and it
just fit my family.
How do you see God working in your ministry? It is giving our children a foundation they won’t ever forget, a
ground work to grow spiritually. Also, the kids are so accepting of one another – that’s what being a Christian is
about.
Mary Ann Nielsen - Babies Bible How did you come to EUM? ? Eileen Warren invited me, I came to visit, and stayed!
How do you see God working in your ministry? He gives me a heart of love for the kids! I love seeing the faces of
joy on the kids during our time together.
Tammy Glaser - FaithWeaver Friends How did you come to EUM? Tami Robbins invited us when we were church shopping. We tried it and we loved
it!
How do you see God working in your ministry? Seeing the kids worship immediately draws me closer to God.
That’s the way we should worship, like the kids – with their whole hearts, an innocent, run-to-the-Father aban-
donment, giving it all to God!

PONDER THIS
What changes do you predict for the future of
the church and youth ministry? How do you think they’ll affect you and your family?
What do you look for in a church, and how
does that differ from what your kids look for?
What are some
ways you can help your kids take ownership of their
role in the church?
WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD?
Since emerging about 40 years ago, the
field of youth ministry has touched
many lives. Yet as the wider church slowly fades into the cultural back-
ground, youth ministry’s future is at risk. What does
that mean for you and your kids?
Participants at Group Publishing’s first-ever Future of
the Church Summit explored this question. Neil
Howe, author of several generational biographies,
emphasized that the millennial generation is looking
for environments that:
• Emphasize a sense of authentic community.
• Offer a variety of ministry growth experi-
ences.
• Give people opportunities to do good deeds
together.
• Use a student-centered rather than a
teacher-focused learning approach.
When summit participants crafted a vision for the
church’s next decade, five transformative themes
emerged:
1. An emphasis on relationships.
2. A return to Jesus—as opposed to atten-dance, buildings, and cash.
3. A focus on community and the needs of the
community.
4. An atmosphere infused with conversation.
5. More reliance on lay leadership, or “the
priesthood of all believers.”
Today’s young people are dynamically shaping this
church of the future.
- Group Publishing “The Parent Link Newsletter”
THE VIEW
• Four out of five Americans say they’re sure there’s a God, and they identify with a faith group. But only half (or less) of them actually attend a church.
• Although 40% of Americans say they attend church every week, the actual number is more
like 20%.
• In just the last five years, the percentage of
teenagers attending church every week has dropped from 20% to 15%.
• About 4,000 churches shut down every year.

TIPS >>> Group magazine editor Rick Law-
rence offers this take on what’s ahead:
• The rise in “unaffiliated” Christians. If nothing
cataclysmic happens to reverse the trend, more and
more young people will abandon traditional church
structures in favor of organizations and gatherings that offer “ownership” roles and experiential rela-
tionships with others.
• The need to do good deeds. Kids want opportuni-
ties to live out their faith by doing, not by ponder-
ing, great truths. Their faith language is action, not
contemplation.
• A focus on Jesus. Ned Erickson shares “The Pro-
gession,” which perfectly captures the consuming
focus of effective ministries in the future: “Get to
know Jesus well, because the more you know him,
the more you’ll love him, and the more you love
him, the more you’ll want to follow him, and the
more you follow him, the more you’ll become like him, and the more you become like him, the more
you become yourself.”
• The need for conversation. Our families and
churches should promote two-way conversation in-
stead of one-way lecturing. Create an expectation every time you get together that conversation will
be a big part of what you’re doing.

for people who hate to read! They are short, engag-
ing, and have deep spiritual meaning. As we are in
the season of Lent this story of redemption is heart-
warming and draws us toward God’s amazing love.
The books are written in story form with the main
character “Willie” an orphan who finds himself on a
path depression, alcoholism, and unrequited love. An
easy read…but I’d also say a must read.

WOMEN’S R&R WEEKEND RETREAT
October 4th—6th
Where did you grow up? Maryland, in the western pan-
handle. More "eastern West Virginia" than crabs and the
Chesapeake Bay.
How did you find EUM?
We were still church hunting, after our move to Wisconsin
from Ohio, when we needed to find a preschool for Sam, our firstborn. MDO was a great school for him, so we decided to check out the church, too, and we loved it!
Tell us about your family.
I've been married to Eric, whom I met when we both were in college studying music, for almost 16 years. We have two
sons: Sam, who's 11 and in sixth grade at REAL, and Gabe, who's 8 and in second at Jefferson Lighthouse. We also have a rescue puppy, almost a year old, named Gideon.
Tell us about your job.
I'm an at-home mom right now. Before we moved to Wiscon-sin, I had just begun working as an adjunct music instructor
(ethnomusicology and piano), but I'm blessed to be able to take care of my boys full-time at present.
Which service do you usually attend?
We attend first service to sing with the choir, and we go to Faith Alive classes during second service.
What ministries are you involved in at EUM?
The choir, definitely, and helping out with an extra pair of hands occasionally in Critterland classes. I'm also starting to get involved with the Faith and Fitness ministry.
What are your hobbies/interests/sports?
I run. I run a lot. Currently, I'm training for the Lakefront 50-mile in Chicago this fall, which will be my second 50-miler. I've
only been running about five years, but it's been a complete change for my life (went from completely sedentary, lost a lot of weight, found peace and sanity - of a sort...)
What else should we know about you?
I'm an avid reader, but I don't get nearly as much uninter-rupted time to read as I'd like. I tend to keep a book going in
every room of the house, as well as my purse and in the car, in case a few minutes arise for me to sneak in a few pages. Good thing I read quickly!

Giving is…to be consistent... “Every Sunday each of you
make an offering and put it in safekeeping. Be as gener-
ous as you can.” (1 Cor. 16:2)
The tithe was established so that all the people might
know the abundance of God’s love. Imagine the variety
of ways we could be in mission and ministry if we could
average giving 3%, 5%, 7% or even a full 10% tithe! If
you’re seriously wondering how much to give, consider
starting at 3% of your net income. If you’re above that
but below tithing, ask God in prayer what might be an
amount that will invite you to sacrifice, yet give you joy
as you consider the lives that will be changed.
Please consider signing up for Online Giving using inFel-
lowship. Online Giving allows you to give your tithes
and offerings on a scheduled, automatic basis using
your checking or savings account. It’s quick, easy and
secure. If you are not registered for inFellowship here

Do you desire to have victory through Christ over the life experience of abuse?
Then CELEBRATE RECOVERY may be for you.
Join Anytime!!
CELEBRATE RECOVERY is a Christ-centered, biblically-based, 12-step program designed to offer a time-
tested and effective tool for recovery from our hurts, habits, compulsions, and addictions. It is a safe place
where all who come can grow stronger in their personal relationship with God and others by removing their
masks, and by sharing their experiences, strengths, weaknesses, and hopes. Meetings begin with worship
and teaching/ testimonies in a large group setting, and then break into gender-specific groups.
We meet at church EVERY THURSDAY NIGHT from 6:30-8:30 p.m. in the Chapel
You are welcome to join at any time!
