St. Joseph’s News
March 2013
PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE:
March promises a return to spring. Spring is a time
of growth and change. With this in mind, St. Joe’s will be hosting an orientation
for perspective students on March 26, 2013 from 7:00-8:30 pm. This will be an
opportunity to showcase the talents of our teachers and students here at St.
Joe’s.
The second annual fine arts gala is March 4 and 5, 2013. The evening on
March 4 is entitled “da capo” and has a classical flavor. The cost is $20 per tick-
et. The evening of March 5 is entitled “Cast in Contempo” and as the name im-
plies feature contemporary acts. The cost of the tickets is $15. Please come out
to enjoy an evening with a truly unique flare. The depth of talent in our per-
formers is impressive and awe inspiring.
As we continue in our journey to increase student academic success and
engagement in their learning, our Focus block sets St. Joe’s apart. As a staff, we
have witnessed growth in our students as they take a more active role in their
learning. The element of choice is key to connecting students with their pas-
sions and serves as another method for meeting their individual needs. I am im-
pressed on a daily basis with the quality of character our students bring to the
class room.
Parent Teacher Interviews are scheduled for March 12 and 14 between 4-7
pm. Teachers are available for interviews both days and we would also encour-
age you to meet with your child’s Strive advisor as well. Report Cards will be
available March 21, 2013.
God Bless,
Courtney Lawrance

Article # 7 March 2013 Spreading the Seeds of Love
One of the biggest gifts of this Lenten period is the chance we have to really look at what kind of seeds we are spreading. Are the seeds we are spreading truly reflective of God’s words of love, God’s forgiveness and God’s
compassion? Are our seeds truly reflective of the depth of God‘s love for us. Lent is a time of reflecting on how much we are in line with God’s message of the Good News of the Kingdom.
Arguably one of the recognizable passages of the bible, John 3:16 describes very vividly the depth of God’s love, by actually dying for us. Jesus sacrificed his own life on the cross so that others may live. No greater ex-pression of love is found and hence “the Cross becomes the most beautiful symbol of love we know!” Jo Ann Paradise RTJ Catechist Feb. /March 2013.
Are the seeds you are spreading really communicating to others the depth of God’s love for them? Do your
seeds provide the foundation for a visible witness, do they genuinely offer self-sacrifice for others. Let us ask
God for the grace and courage this month to spread these truly other centered seeds of love.

Hold the Salt: Choosing and Preparing Healthy
Foods with Less Sodium
Sodium is a mineral found in all foods, largely found in salt. It is needed for your body to function, but most Canadians eat more sodium than they need. Here are some tips to help you choose and prepare foods that are lower in sodium.
Enjoy fresh foods more often, such as fruits, vege-tables, fish, meat, and poultry. These tend to be naturally lower in sodium.
Use herbs, spices, lemon juice, garlic, onion, and salt-free seasoning mixes to add flavour to foods.
Nutrition Tidbits!
Read food labels and look for the phrases, “sodium-free”, “low sodium”, or “no added salt” when buying canned or frozen foods. The % Daily Value is a quick overview of how much or how little of a nutrient is in the food.
-5% or less: a little bit of the nutrient (for sodium,
choose these foods more often)
-15% or greater: a lot of the nutrient
Choosing and preparing healthy, lower sodium foods can be a fun family activity. Challenge yourself to try different substitutes for salt in favourite recipes to discover and enjoy new flavours!
Plan Ahead: Shop with a List!
Grocery shopping the healthy way starts with planning ahead. Before your next visit to the grocery store, try to think of how your week will look and plan your menu accord-ingly.
To prepare a healthy grocery list, try to include on your list foods from all four food groups from Eating Well with Canada’s Food Guide (Vegetables and Fruit, Grain Products, Milk and Alterna-tives and Meat and Alterna-
Once your list is ready to go, try to plan your next trip to the grocery store for a time of the day when you are not tired or hungry and have enough time to read labels and look at the nutrition facts table.
Preparing a grocery shopping list will help you plan your fami-ly meals, buy healthier foods and save time and money.
