The Metropolitan Opera Saturday, March 2, 12 pm

The Metropolitan Opera presents an exciting new production of Wagner’s Parsifal with tenor Jonas Kaufmann in the title role.

Parsifal tells the story of a young man who knows little about who he is. His path through suffering to enlighten- ment eventually leads him to the fulfillment of his destiny: he will become king of the knights of the Holy Grail, reinvigorating this mystical order.

This new Met production includes some of today’s most acclaimed Wagnerians. Katarina Dalayman, whose Met credits include both Brangäne and Isolde in Tristan und Isolde and Brünnhilde in the Ring, is Kundry; and the world’s leading Wagnerian bass, René Pape, sings Gurnemanz.

Night LightsFriday, March 8, 10 pm

The noted jazz critic and music historian Ted Gioia joins Night Lights host David Brent Johnson to discuss The Jazz Standards: A Guide to the Repertoire. The book tells the story of more than 250 key jazz songs and includes a listening guide to more than 2,000 recordings.

Gioia is author of several books on music, including The History of Jazz and Delta Blues, and is one of the editors in chief of the Encyclopedia of Jazz Musicians. His concept of “post-cool,” originally described in his book The Birth (and Death) of the Cool, was selected by Adbusters magazine as one of their “Big Ideas of 2012.” Gioia is also a jazz pianist, composer, and producer.

Spirit of Brown CountySunday, March 3 at 8pm; Thursday, March 7 at 9pm; Sunday, March 10 at 3:30pm; Tuesday, March 12 at 1pm; and Saturday, March 16 at 10:30am.

Brown County’s beautiful landscape draws millions of visitors every year and has inspired generations of artists and musicians. WTIU invites you to watch a new special exploring the art, history, culture and beauty of one of Indiana’s most popular tourist destinations.

Brown County hosts an eclectic cast of characters. What brings them together is a love and appreciation of the land, offering an endless palette of light and color. Spirit of Brown County includes a brief history of the county. Witness the rise of tourism that helped create Indiana’s largest state park. Sample the abundance of present day arts and crafts including the visual arts, performing arts, and music. Travel with Brown County Sheriff’s Office Deputy, Chad Williams; visit the Whispering Pines Alpacas; prospect for gold in Gatesville, plus much more.

Production support for Spirit of Brown County comes from Visit Bloomington.com, Allen Funeral Home and Crematory of Bloomington, and by the Brown County Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Focus on FlowersSunday, March 3 at 7pm; Thursday, March 7 at 8pm; Saturday, March 9 at 12:30pm; and Monday, March 11 at 1pm.

For the past ten years, Focus on Flowers has been loved and listened to on WFIU Public Radio. Now, Master Gardener Moya Andrews expands her popular radio program into a television special premiering this month on WTIU.

In Focus on Flowers, Moya shares gardening tips and her fervor for the esthetic of gardening. Moya is joined by several experts. Master Gardener Esther Minnick gives practical advice for preparing the spring garden. Award-winning garden designer Anita Bracalente discusses the development of a garden plan, with examples from Jonlee Andrews/Dan Smith garden, which is a stunning example of her creativity. Botanical artist Gillian Harris discusses how to select native species and the importance of diversity in the garden. Retired physician Tom Hollingsworth illustrates eco-friendly plantings that attract birds and butterflies. And determined and ingenious Kim Patton shows how she is keeping Bambi and friends out of her garden, even though it abuts a forested area where deer abound.

Production support for Focus on Flowers comes from Dats Restaurant.
