Buy Rite Finishing, Hast-ings, Nebraska, has grown to be a leader in the powder coating in-dustry. The company emerged in 2000 from the transition of a com-pany owned by Jim Beeson that did powder coating to Buy Rite Finishing, a supplier of powder coating equipment and solutions. Eric Beeson joined his father at this time and together they recog-nized the need for an experienced finishing equipment supplier for both used and new products.

“Powder coating has been around since the 1950s,” noted Jim Beeson. “We’ve seen an emergence of this finishing proce-dure in recent years in manufac-turing. Metal finishers have found that powder coating and curing

gives a longer lasting finish to parts and equipment.”

The firm has been successful in supplying services through-out Northern America and sales of new and used products and equipment. It’s headquartered in the Midwest, and there are sales representatives throughout the country. Jim Beeson serves as the Operations Director and VP of the company. Jim’s son, Eric Beeson, serves as the President and Sales Director. Eric’s son, Tayler Bee-son, is the Warehouse and Service Manager. Buy Rite Finishing also employs three sales and sup-port staff. The company recently relocated their operation to a new 15,500-sq.- ft. warehouse/office. The company offers product such

as: powder application equipment, conveyors, hop-pers, washers (automatic & batch), ovens (automatic & batch), test equipment, fire detection, filters, replace-ment parts and more.

Buy Rite Finishing has been successful in launch-ing its own proprietary products through research and development over the last five years. This line, Husker Finishing Equipment, includes powder hoppers, sieves, washing stations, cleaning materials and the most rec-ognized, the ColorBOARD Color Management System. This can accommodate up to six different powder col-ors, allowing the operator to use two different powder guns for application. It comes equipped with Buy Rite Finishing’s proprietary ColorPURGE. This option also eliminates labor by allowing the powder gun and hose to be cleaned free of powder in a matter of seconds. A typical color change with the ColorBOARD takes ap-proximately thirty seconds. The company has planned many new ventures in the near future as the business continues to develop. Its new facility will have a testing station for new and used equipment. Its team is also working on the develop-ment of training curriculum and certification programs for powder coaters.

The Kansas City Chapter of the National Tool-ing & Machining Association (NTMA) held a Shop Meeting at the Kansas City Kansas Community Col-lege (KCKCC) TEC Education Center’s new loca-tion on February 27th. Over 60 attended the event.

The meeting was sponsored by SECO Tools. The evening started with tours of KCKCC

TEC’s machining and welding facilities. Other training offered at the center include: automotive tech; property maintenance; computer repair; con-struction; cosmetology; culinary arts; electrical tech; health; HVAC; appliance tech and others.

The first speaker at the event was KC NTMA’s Andy Borst speaking about the Emerging Leaders program within the chapter. This is getting the next owners/managers involved with the chapter.

Maureen Carruthers and Steven Tamasi spoke next about NTMA’s National Robotic League (NRL). They noted how the robotic competition is drawing the interest of teens (and their parents) and making them aware of careers in manufacturing.

Rick Cavallaro, Safety/Facility Mgr with Oregon Blount Inc., covered global safety harmonization

labeling and SDS. He noted the new pictograms being used internationally and becoming required in the U.S. by OSHA and EPA.

Photos from the event are on this page and on the chapter’s website. The KC NTMA chapter can be con-tacted at (816) 739-4422 or www.kcntma.org.

10 MID-AMERICA COMMERCE & INDUSTRY

By LaRoux K. Gillespie, Dr. Eng., FSME, CMfgE, PE

Almost every machine shop or manufacturing facility today decries the lack of skilled help. While having a cadre of person-nel with requisite skills, they need more with similar abilities. Several options are available to companies including community colleges graduates, a number of excellent high school pro-grams and a few new apprentice programs. Additionally, many companies are turning to online training due to its advantages for upgrading the knowledge and abilities of existing staff as well as new employees. Many of those choosing this later approach miss a key element in its success however.

Shop owners frequently be-lieve they know what their staff’s missing knowledge is. After all, they work with these people day after day so they should know what an individual needs in the way of training. But too many do not undertake an assessment of their worker’s knowledge needs before they begin the training effort. Everyone gets the same training even though they come with different knowledge. The more cost effective approach is to document the knowledge and

skills needed by the company and then assess each person relative to those documented needs.

Several years ago, we devel-oped a lengthy training program to teach new staff how to manually deburr complex precision minia-ture parts (0.000050 inch toler-ances) without breaking edges more than 0.001 or 0.003 inches. It only took a few days to realize that none of the workers had any concept of what 0.003 inch was. It was not in the new employees understanding. We corrected that oversight, but we had to add more training time (no we did not do an assessment like we should have). We started at the wrong place in their education. The same can be true for just jumping into a train-ing program without an assess-ment.

Today in the machining com-munity, national skills standards exist through NIMS and other national programs and training providers such as Tooling U-SME provide online and in-person assessments so that companies can plan cost effective and timely training to meet what a company really needs for both existing staff as well as entering staffs. As-sessments from basic manufactur-ing and workplace knowledge to manufacturing engineering and

Industry Expert and Leader Discusses Importance of Assessment For Employees

technologist are available to help identify knowledge gaps. That as-sessment is good for the company as well as clearly identifying for each employee what he/she needs in terms of additional training and education. Further, an assess-ment can provide the employee a clear statement of their abilities so they understand and can take pride when they have reached the next level of ability.

LaRoux Gillespie, Dr. Eng., FSME, CMfgE, PE, and former SME national president in 2012, spent 40 years as manufacturing engineer and manager in a high precision manufacturing company and led two major training efforts in deburring and machining. He can be contacted at: [email protected]

J&J Wire, Inc., Beatrice, Ne-braska, is preparing for its 30th anniversary and has installed a batch powder coating system. The firm specializes in the fabrication of wire, rod and tubing.

Starting out in his garage, John Church started the company as a sideline business. Now it operates in a 40,000-sq.-ft. facility with 15 employees.

Powder coating was added to improve efficiency and turnaround time. “We identified powder coating as an opportunity to improve our flow, efficiency and delivery,” stated Church.

“We purchased the system from Buy Rite Finishing (out of Hastings, Nebraska). They treated us right.”

The new batch system can handle parts up to 15’ x 8’ and fea-tures a 3-stage steam pre-treatment system, a gas oven for dryoff/curing and KCI coating equipment/guns. Multiple finishes and a broad range of colors can be applied.

J&J Wire can take a customer from design to prototyping to final assembly and finishing. Whether a customer’s needs are best served by computer controlled forming ma-chinery or hard tooling, the company has the capability to form almost any configuration in solid round or square in sizes ranging from 12 gauge (.105) to over one inch in diameter.

Services offered at the company include: ring forming (2” to 36” in diameter from 9 gauge to 1/2 inch thick); welding and fabrication; tube forming (two or three dimensional); flat strap forming; secondary opera-tions (drilling, punching, threading and etc.); and straightening/cutting.

Wichita ISM Tours Sedgwick County Emergency Management Facility

The Wichita Chapter of the Institute for Supply Management (ISM) held a membership meeting on February 13th at the Sedgwick County Public Safety Center in Wichita.

The center houses the Emer-gency Management and Com-munications Operations for the county and many of the communi-ties inside the county.

Its purpose is to help citizens and local governments mitigate against, prepare for, respond to and recover from all types of emergencies and disasters (natu-ral, technological and national security).

Staff from the center covered some of the extensive, ongo-ing training that goes on every month. Examples from recent events were used to demonstrate how the center is used to facilitate communications and responses to emergencies. The staff discussed how the county’s procurement staff has a role to play in obtaining needed material/supplies to help with a disaster. The example was given for a recent grain elevator collapse that required truckloads of plywood and beams to stabilize the grain and allow rescue staff to search for victims. The lumber and other specialty equipment was needed instantly.

Many of you will remember the Clinton campaign slogan in 1992: It’s “the economy, stupid.” Today, six years after the current recession began, this should be our major focus, too.

However, according to a sur-vey by the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) and Indus-try Week, it appears the main con-cern for members right now isn’t the economy, but the “dad gum guv’ment,” as Huck Finn’s dad sang in the musical “Big River.”

Despite manufacturers “show-ing the highest level of optimism since late 2012, Washington continues to be the major source of burdens facing manufacturers.”

“The top business challenge,

cited by 79% of respondents, was an unfavorable business climate due to taxes, regulations, government uncertainties and Washington’s inability to solve problems. Rising health care and insurance costs followed closely behind (77%), with uncertain-ties attributed mostly to the start of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). (Ninety-seven percent of manufacturers offer health care coverage.)

NAM Chief Economist Chad Moutray said, “Manufacturers are prepared to make the investments that will jump-start our economy, but we need Washington to work with us, not against us.”

On February 25, Jay Timmon, NAM president and CEO, dis-cussed the “State of Manufactur-ing 2014” at a meeting in Hous-ton. Output from manufacturers has increased 18% since the end

comes down to a focus on three specific areas: products, people and policy, Timmons said.

While manufacturing de-clined as a share of the Ameri-can economy for decades, it has grown the past few years, even as the broader economy needed to be juiced up by the monetary equiva-lent of steroids.

“Innovation is a big reason why manufacturing products like cars and trucks are making a strong comeback. The ability to adapt, innovate and improve is at the foundation of the U.S. econo-my, and it shows up in abundance in manufacturing in America.

Affordable natural gas has made production more cost-effec-tive for manufacturers across the board. According to the American Chemistry Council, $90 billion of new private-sector manufacturing investments in the chemical sector are planned.

People. While finding workers with the right skills is a challenge, Timmons said more and more young people are seeing manufac-turing as an exciting and fulfilling career. Eighty-two percent of manufacturers report they have jobs going unfilled because they can’t find people due to the skills gap. By and large these are the STEM skills–science, technology, engineering and math.

“For the high-tech jobs of today, workers need a foundation in science and math as well as the ability to think analytically. The Manufacturing Institute runs a skills-certification program that enables American workers to receive a portable credential dem-onstrating the skills they possess. Immigration reform could also provide the workers needed.”

In regard to policy, “while there are many reasons to be opti-

mistic about the future of American manufacturing, government over-reach poses the biggest threat.

“A die-caster sent us a list of regulations with which he must comply. The company estimates that one of every five dollars of pretax profit is spent on comply-ing with a dizzying array of new regulations.”

One small manufacturer re-ported how an inspector at his facil-ity told him a fire extinguisher was affixed too low on the wall, making it hard for employees to see. He corrected the problem, just to have another inspector come in later to say the extinguisher was too high and, therefore violated the Ameri-cans with Disabilities Act.

“These companies are not alone. One entire industry–en-ergy–is at risk of suffocation by regulation. New ozone regulations proposed by this Administration would practically halt manufac-turing expansion and growth in America.”

Timmons said 95% of the world’s customers live outside our borders and we need more free trade agreements. “America has the highest corporate tax rate among developed countries—a big reason why it’s 20% more expensive to do business here than in any other country, before you even account for wage costs.

“When you consider where the economy is today, our growth— modest as it is–is a testament to the resilience of our free-market system and our way of life,” he concluded. ****************************

P.S.: The Heritage Foundation and Wall Street Journal’s Index of Economic Freedom shows the U.S. dropped from “free” in 2009 to “mostly free” in 2010 and is now down to 10th place in the world, mainly because of the thousands of new regulations on most phases of commerce and industry.
