Thought for the Month

Ash to Eggs

I'm writing this on Ash Wednesday. We have

a service this evening. I said to someone we

might have coffee afterwards. The response -

we could but most won't stay. Why? People

would be wanting to get home to watch ‘Wolf

Hall’ on TV!

What a dark serial that is. But life was

like that then – dark, very dark if you were

not on King Henry's side. The rooms were

dark too – atmospheric in candlelight.

(Anyone recognise the room in Cothay Manor

used by Thomas Cromwell?) The whole

drama broods with the tensions of historic dis-

agreements.

I don't know how accurate it all is, his-

tory-wise. It feels as if some pretty good re-

search has been done into Tudor life and poli-

tics. I'm reading Hilary Mantel's book ‘Wolf

Hall’ at the moment and it's interesting how

often she quotes lines from the tele version.

The facts seem to ring true but one can't be

quite sure about the characters of the people,

one never can.

The whole atmosphere is filled with re-

ligious innuendo. Being about the struggles

of the Reformation, one would expect that,

voiced as high theology or as colloquial preju-

dice. Educated as a Catholic, Hilary sadly

lost her faith at the age of twelve. One won-

ders why. Rather young to come to such a

conclusion, maybe. But she knows her stuff

and shows a grasp of what being Christian is

about.

There's another dark serial just coming

to an end – ‘Broadchurch’ the sequel. The

first series was about the murder of a young

boy, it went on to reveal the powerful emo-

tions in the village where the tragedy hap-

pened. This second one is also very intense –

but it seems to be more about squeezing out

all that intensity, everyone left drained, all

their human failings and confusion exposed.

The crimes are just the means to portray that

end.

There's no mention of real faith or spiri-

tual understanding. Even the vicar can seem

rather inept. But perhaps the last episode next

week will be quite different. Can't at the mo-

ment see a sunrise of happiness on its way!

But doesn't Lent have a darkness in its

character? It begins with ashes – ‘ashes to

ashes, dust to dust’. It's about being realistic

– about our mortality, our inadequacies, our

imperfections, and how far can we deal with

such impossibilities. It descends towards

Good Friday where, on the cross, cruel and

self-centred humanity is fully exposed, to-

gether with the consequences we inflict on

each other and our world.

We would even destroy God if we

could. But then come the eggs, signalling the

defeat of the ashes. The phoenix celebrates.

It bursts out of the cold egg of death with

promises of new life and new beginnings.

And not merely promises – but power; the

power to end the past, leave it behind and start

afresh. No – not by my power nor by your

power….but…

"Put your hand in the hand of the man who

stilled the water…."

He brings light into the darkness of your own

‘Wolf Hall’, and sanity and direction into the

confusion of your own ‘Broadchurch’.

Leave behind the ash which stands for

death. Take on the egg which brings new life!

Preschool News

Ofsted Inspection

We’re delighted to announce that Preschool’s

recent Ofsted Inspection (January 2015) was

rated ‘good’. These are some of the key find-

ings:

The quality of teaching is consistently

good with a strong emphasis on supporting

the children’s language and communication

skills.

Staff are very successful in supporting

children’s personal, social and emotional de-

velopment.

Staff provide good support so that children

gain confidence and are emotionally secure.

The preschool has an ethos of learning

with nature. This means children have a

really good understanding of the natural world

and enjoy being outdoors.

To read the full inspection report, type

in ‘Stawley Under Fives Preschool’ at

www.reports.ofsted.gov.uk Well done to the

staff and committee who work very hard to

make the Preschool the wonderful place that it

is.

Gruffalo Trail

The Gruffalo Trail at Haldon Forest was a

great outdoor adventure for the children, one

which they enjoyed with Stawley School.

They eagerly found The Gruffalo characters in

amongst the woodland plants and their faces

lit up when they discovered the huge gruffalo

at the end of the walk! They were amazed to

see he had all the same features (the knobbly

knees, the turned out toes… you know the

rest!) as the one they’ve been discovering in

the story.

Goat Visit

The children have thoroughly enjoyed learn-

ing about goats this month and had a first-

hand experience of meeting a real goat! Jake

the Kid visited Preschool and all the children

had a go at feeding him his bottle of milk.

Thank you to the family who bought him from

their farm to visit Preschool.

Into Space

In the next half-term Preschool staff will be

igniting the children’s interest in space. The

story ‘Whatever Next’ by Jilly Murphy will

no doubt inspire the children’s imagination to

travel to space and back all in a day at Pre-

school!

Country Matters

In Memoriam

To night the winds begin to rise

And roar from yonder day;

The last red leaf is whirl’d away,

And rooks are blown about the skies;

The forest crack’d, the water curl’d,

The cattle huddled on the lea;

And wildly dash’d on tower and tree

The sunbeam strikes along the world.

Alfred, Lord Tennyson

Early February: The Roe deer around Ap-

pley are sporting their newly grown antlers.

These are extraordinary structures, superfi-

cially like horns but shed each year, the suc-

ceeding year’s crop usually being larger than

the last, at least until the animal is past it’s

prime. Initially, antlers are covered with a

skin and fine hairs, known as velvet, which

dies and falls away when they are grown.

Why deer’s antlers are produced and fall off is

not known, as cows and goats – their close

relatives – do not shed their horns.

Roe deer are a mid-brown colour with a

white rump and are a native British species.

They are typically found in small groups on

the edge of woodland and are the most numer-

ous deer in Britain.

Roe deer mate in July and August and

the implantation of the egg is delayed until

December; the young being born the follow-

ing May or June. The kids are left in the

scrub and are suckled 2 or 3 times a day.

T.S. Elliot called February to March

‘the dark time of the year – between melting

and freezing’, which seems to sum up the last

few weeks of weather. But on 14th February

my pond was ‘alive’ with croaking frogs all

busily mating and spawning, so let’s hope the

frogs have a good year.

Most of the birds have started to sing

again and I expect you will hear the chaf-

finches. The chaffinch song is a spirited one

with a vigorous string of short, cheerful

sounding notes, then a slower string of notes

finishing with a brisk twirl.

The rooks are starting to repair their

nests but not with too much effort as yet, and

the moles are cleaning and extending their

runs ready for the breeding season. I expect

you’ve got plenty of new mole hills on your

lawn!

Catkins have extended to release their

pollen and pussy willows have their white soft

flowers out.

Stawley Parish Council Minutes of the meeting held at Appley

Pavilion on Tuesday 3rd February 2015

Present: Clive Wall, Chairman, Simon

Buttars (SB), Charles St George (CStG), Paul

Musgrove (PM), Sally Freeman, Clerk and

Michael Parkinson

Apologies

Apologies: PCSO Louise Fyne 6945, Charlie

Dunn. The Chairman noted the apologies.

Police Report

No local issues to report.

Minutes of the Last Meeting

The Council agreed that the minutes of the

last meeting (January) and also the minutes of

the Extra Ordinary Meeting on the 19th Janu-

ary, were a true record and were signed by the

Chairman.

Matters Arising

None.

The Globe Inn – Community Asset. CstG

reported that he had had one response thus far,

in support of nominating The Globe. A deci-

sion will be made at the March meeting and

therefore any Parishioners wishing to com-

ment should contact him before then. After

nomination it is an 8 week decision process by

TDBC.

Planning

Appley Orchard Farm – CW told the Council-

lors that all six applications were approved

with conditions.

The Councillors discussed the recent

Planning Committee meeting which CstG,

The Chairman and Clerk attended.

CstG suggested that, in order to avoid

confusion, the Parish Council should respond

to all future applications in one of the follow-

ing ways:- Support, Object, Comment or No

Comment and to vote if necessary. All Coun-

cillors agreed to this future strategy.

35/14/0027LB – Cothay Manor, Cothay, An-

cillary Accommodation. The Council dis-

cussed and decided it had no comments to

make.

35/14/0018 – Coates Farm, Kittisford – Re-

fused.

35/14/0019 – North Heywood, Stawley – Re-

fused.

CstG informed the Councillors that TDBC

had published its draft Site Allocations and

Development Management Plan, which sets

out the Council’s detailed policies for imple-

menting the adopted Core Strategy. He drew

attention to a number of policies that could be

relevant in the Parish, including policies relat-

ing to the approval of permanent and tempo-

rary agricultural dwellings in the countryside.

The draft plan would be subject to independ-

ent examination during 2015 and should be

formally adopted at the end of the year.

Footpaths

Michael Parkinson (Chairman, RCI) talked to

the Councillors about updating and republish-

ing the walks leaflet, which was originally

printed 12 years ago. The RCI had produced

an initial 500 copies and were fortunate to ob-

tain a ‘Health and Wellbeing’ Grant from

Councillor James Hunt. It aims to produce

two further leaflets, one for Ashbrittle and one

for Bathealton. Sign boards will need to be

erected, showing the distance, time allowed,

calories consumed, archaeology and wildlife

interest. There is a plan to run guided walks

once a month in the summer, using qualified

guides. The Grant should cover all expendi-

ture for one year.

Planning Permission may be needed for

the sign boards. Hopefully, they will mostly

be situated on Council-owned verges, but any

needing to be placed on private land will re-

quire the permission of the landowner. It was

suggested that donations be invited for the

leaflets, which will be placed in the shop and

local pubs. SB suggested putting an emblem

on the current footpath signs. The Council

thanked Mr. Parkinson and the RCI for this

update and asked to be kept informed.

Website

PM and the Clerk provided an update on what

could be achieved, if we upgraded the current

website, to be more useful to parishioners.

PM agreed to do further investigation and re-

port at the March meeting.

The Clerk suggested inviting parishion-

ers to subscribe to having an email update of

9

any useful information i.e. Agenda, Extra Or-

dinary Meetings and urgent Police issues in

the Area. It was agreed to adopt this strategy

in the hope of keeping parishioners better in-

formed.

Roads

SB and the Council expressed their sincere

thanks to Steve Swan, for refurbishing the salt

bins positioned around the Parish. He had

done so in his own time and had refused re-

muneration.

The salt bin on top of Bullockfield Hill

had gone missing. SB to investigate and re-

place if necessary.

SB reported that the ‘No HGV’ sign at

Appley Cross was due to be repaired this

week.

SB agreed to investigate with the High-

ways Agency, the viewing aspect of the en-

trance to Appley Orchard Farm.

AOB

CstG and the Chairman, opened a discussion

about the upcoming Parish Council Election.

It was decided to put a notice in the Parish

Magazine and on the website. The formal

Notice would be placed on the notice board

when it is issued by TDBC. Nomination pa-

pers will be available from the Clerk.

Affordable Housing – CstG registered his

concern that the working party was losing mo-

mentum and it was decided that the Chairman

would try to ascertain the current situation

from Jeremy Robbins.

Meeting was closed at 9.10pm.

Date of Next Meeting Tuesday, 3rd

February Lunch Club will be hosting

Tank Adams talking about his experiences in

Antarctica.

On Thursday 26th March we will be

welcoming Gavin Saunders, a new arrival in

Ashbrittle. In conjunction with the Forestry

Commission he has been managing a new

project in Neroche Forest on the Black-

downs. We look forward to learning about it.

Please let me know if you would like to

attend (tel 01823 672203) or otherwise I will

be hassling you as usual just before the event.

We are always ready to welcome new

local people to Lunch Club, so please look out

for anyone new in your area and tell them

about us.

Promote your services online

Do you run a local care and support ser-

vice? Do you sell care products? Or do

you organise a support group in

your local area?

If the answer is ‘yes’ to any of these questions

then you need to promote your services or

products on an exciting new website called

Somerset Choices.

Somerset Choices, led by Somerset

County Council, will allow people to search

for care services, products, support groups and

events in their local area.

Somerset Choices is due to launch in

Spring 2015 and the Council is encouraging

hundreds of local services providers and vol-

untary agencies to register their details by

April.

Don’t miss out! Come along to an informa-

A fashionable theatre company, fresh from the city, begin their high-tech show when the room is plunged into sudden

darkness. Is it a blow-out? Or is it something more mysterious? How will audience and performers keep one another

entertained until light returns?

One of the UK’s best loved rural touring companies, Cartoon de Salvo (Meat & Two Veg, Chain Gang-gang and Pub

Rock) present a playful take on their fifteen years of taking theatre to village halls, in a show that delivers what they

do best – exceptional storytelling, gorgeous live music and swashbuckling adventure.

Full Steam Ahead for the 10 Parishes Festival

The 10 Parishes Festival, held every two years in and around Wiveliscombe in September, is a

major showcase for over 100 artists, craftspeople and community organisations. Artists need to

register before the end March for the Festival, if they want to appear in the 15,000 printed

guides that go out across Somerset, East Devon and on the Festival website.

Festival Director Pauline Homeshaw said, ‘We were delighted with the turnout at the meet-

ing on 9th January and the large number of new creatives who want to be involved this

year’. Venues have been wonderfully inventive over the years – from a garage showroom to a

converted barn, a garden shed to a pub, as well as rooms in artists’ own homes. There is help for

artists and craftspeople without an exhibition venue as yet.

Casanova Appley Pavilion & Ashbrittle Arts,

Valentine’s Night 2015

A Take Art event

Casanova was a beautifully staged play with

Pip Utton’s script and spoken word comple-

mented by Marguerite Chaigne’s evocative

contemporary dance.

Pip created a Casanova nearing the end

of his life, living in Bohemia as a librarian,

writing his memoirs and dreaming of the

women he has loved and left and the ones

who had broken his heart!

Pip developed his character, warts and

all; from his first conquests in a Venice

priest’s household to his romps across 1750’s

Europe as his name became synonymous with

‘womaniser’. Along the way Pip’s Casanova

met royalty, popes, cardinals and contempo-

raries such as Voltaire, Goethe and Mozart.

Fame, fortune, prison and exile followed

him through his many careers; lawyer, clergy-

man, military officer, violinist, con man,

pimp, gourmand, dancer, businessman, diplo-

mat, spy, politician, medic, mathematician,

social philosopher, cabalist, playwright and

writer! At the same time finding the energy

to seduce half the women in Europe!!

Pip’s stories were graphic, funny, touch-

ing and thought provoking and Marguerite

provided the perfect foil interpreting six of his

most famous and memorable conquests with

music and dance.

Many thanks to everyone who supported

Casanova, we had a great turn out on the

night.

Take Art continues to provide local venues,

(such as the Pavilion and Ashbrittle Village

Hall), with access to fantastic theatre, music

and dance performers. We are lucky that

there is still enough ‘subsidy’ to allow us to

have the confidence to book an act without the

worry of covering the true cost from ticket

sales. Take Art sponsored acts never fail to

fulfil the promise of a professional evening’s

entertainment, please go to their website

www.takeart for details of the current pro-

gramme.

Well done Take Art and thank-you.

Appley Cross W.I.

After the business meeting, our speaker Mr.

Tony Burges gave his talk on 'Exeter through

the ages'. He began by giving a summary of

the history of Exeter from the Romans B.C. to

the present day. He then presented slides of

various interesting places in Exeter.

He began by showing how Exeter

looked in Roman times; 75% of the Roman

wall still exists today. The original Cathedral

was very small and was burnt down by the

Vikings. The Normans built a larger one on

the same site but only the two Norman Tow-

ers remain. In 1112 the Bishop went to Salis-

bury and saw the cathedral there and returned

to have the cathedral in Exeter demolished to

window sill height. He then had the present

cathedral built with flying buttresses, which

together with the two Norman Towers, sup-

port the roof.

Mr Burges showed us many interesting

things to see around Exeter and told us about

the weir built by Isabella de Fortibus, Count-

ess of Devon in 1286 and why the canal was

built. The Guildhall in Exeter is 800 years old

and open to the public most days and well

worth a visit.

Mr. Burges is one of the Exeter 'Red

Coat' guides. The guides are located just op-

posite the Cathedral and one can go there and

join any group and have a half-hour tour of

Exeter, free of charge.

After this interesting and informative

talk we all felt we would view Exeter very

differently on our next visit. The meeting on

10th March will be back to the usual time of

7.30 pm. when Mrs. Vivienne Duncan will be

speaking about 'Street Pastors'.

We meet every second Tuesday of the

month at Bathealton Village Hall at 7.30 pm.

New members are always welcome
