VIEWS FROM THE CHAIR

WEATHER FORECASTS

Do you find yourself thinking what

an amazing range of career

possibilities there are now? We

didn’t even have a career

interview before I left the High School, all those years ago. I watch

Mastermind and find the range of jobs of the participants intriguing. I

can see no connection between this and the subjects they choose.

or their grasp of the general knowledge questions.

I find myself drawn to the weather forecasts and wonder what the

training for this job involves. I love the range of visuals they use with

all those white arrows chasing across the map, the rain belts

morphing into new shapes as they move inexorably to the right.

Most of all I enjoy the consummate skills of the presenters who

know exactly what is on the screen while looking in our direction.

Have you noticed how much they seem to enjoy what they are

doing? They smile and exude friendliness in contrast to many of the

newscasters who are wooden and worried in performance. I love the

way the weather forecasters blend certainty with possibility and the

way they manage the visuals and technology of the presentation. It’s

a form of theatre where what they say mostly comes to pass.

The ultimate weather forecast is the BBC Weather App. which sets

out in detail what is to be expected in Woodford Green, hour by hour

for that day.. Alas it has no presenters, but the sheer optimism that

these things can be predicted makes me smile.

Jean and Mike Murphy from LOCAL WALKS write: Next walk will

be on Thursday March 12th and will be linear from outside Fairlop

Station back to Woodford Station, starting at 10.00 a.m. The walk

will be about 5.5 miles long and there will be a café stop along the

way (through a secret door!) The first part of the walk is along the

road, but we will soon be walking through Claybury Woods and then

back along the River Roding towards Ray Park (another café and

toilets) and Woodford Station. Many paths are good, but if there is a

lot of rain, it could be muddy. We aim to be back to Woodford

Station between 12.30 and 1.00 p.m. Let’s hope for a dry day!

Mary Knights writes: I was sad to learn of the sudden death of Geoff

Harding, our Astronomy convenor, after a short illness. Geoff was

quite a character and apart from his interest in the stars, he was a

member of the Magic Circle, taught yoga, belonged to a philosophy

group, was a very keen gardener and had two allotments to look

after, plus his own garden, and he also was a gardener at

Bancroft's School. He was our local Neighbourhood Watch

representative and will be very sadly missed by us all.

COMMUNITY MATTERS

Editor writes: If you refer to the February

Newsletter, you will see an article on Page 5

about ATM Frauds. By fortunate, or unfortunate

coincidence, on February 4th my wife Sue Joiner

was trying to take money out of a NatWest ATM

machine in The Broadway, Woodford Green and

EXACTLY the same fraud was tried on her. The

fraudster pressed the cancel button by leaning over and blocking

Sue’s view and got the card out. She had the gumption to confront

him, demanded the card back and he ran off. Sue had read the

article and realised what was happening. If she been older or more

frail, the deception could have worked. Don’t mess with Sue!!

Details of 3 more ‘scams’ to be aware of are shown below.

________________________________________________________________________________

GPS: A couple had their car broken into while

they were at a football game. Things stolen from

the car included a garage door remote control,

some money and a GPS which had been

prominently mounted on the dashboard. When

the victims got home they found their house had

been ransacked. The thieves had used the GPS to guide them to

the house. They then used the garage remote control to open the

garage door and gain entry to the house. They knew the owners

were at the football game, knew what time the game was scheduled

to finish and so they knew how much time they had to clean out the

house. It would appear that they had brought a truck to empty the

house of its contents. Something to consider if you have a GPS:

Don't put your home address in it. Put a nearby address (like a store

or service station) so you can still find your way home if you need to,

so no thief would know where you live.

_________________________________________________________________________________

MOBILE PHONES: A ‘victim’ had her handbag stolen. It

contained her mobile phone, credit card and wallet. 20

minutes later when she called her husband, from a pay

phone telling him what had happened, he said 'I

received your text asking about our Pin number and I've

replied to it.' The thief had used the stolen phone to text

her husband, listed as ‘hubby” in the contact list and got

hold of the pin number. Within 20 minutes, the thief had

withdrawn all the money from their bank account. Avoid using

names like Home, Dad or Mum in your contact list. When sensitive

info is being asked through texts, CONFIRM by calling back.

_________________________________________________________________________________

LAND LINE PHONE SCAM: You get a call on a

land line, stating it is a call from your bank and

they tell you that your bank card has been cloned.

They say for security reasons they are not going to

be asking for personal details, but for you to call

the number on the back of the card. Without you

realising, they don’t hang up the phone up at their end, so the line is

still open and another fraudster answers your call, saying they are

part of the security department of your bank and ask for all personal

details. Sometimes they will even ask you to pop the card into an

envelope and they send a taxi to come and collect. They now have

your PIN and your card. If you get a call like this, always remember

a bank would not ask for these details, as they already have them.

If you decide to make a call to the number on the back of the card

for security reasons, always use a different phone, or leave the call

for at least 10 minutes, to make sure the line has been cleared.

WISE WORDS

AND THEN IT'S WINTER

Time has a way of moving quickly

and catching us unaware of the

passing years. It may seem just

yesterday that we were young and

wonder where all the years went

and how it was back then and of all our hopes and dreams.

But, here it is... The winter of our lives and it can catch us by

surprise and wonder. How did we get here so fast? Where did

the years go and where did our youth go? [

Many friends are retired and getting grey. They move slower and

we see an older person now. Some are in better and some in

worse shape than us. Not like the ones that we remember,

who were young and vibrant, but age is starting to show and we

are now those older folks that we used to think we'd never be!

And so we all enter into this new season of our lives, unprepared

for all the aches and pains and the loss of strength and ability to

go and do things that we wish we had done, but never did!! We

may have regrets and there are things we wish we hadn't done, or

things we should have done, but indeed, there are many things

we will be happy and proud to have done.

If you're not in your winter yet, it will be here faster than you

think. So whatever you would like to accomplish in your life,

please do it quickly! Don't put things off too long!! Life goes by

too quickly, so do what you can today, live for today and say all

the things you want your loved ones to remember you for.

Enjoy today! Do something fun! Be happy! Spend the kid’s

inheritance without worry! (Known as SKI-ing). Have a great

day. Remember it is health that is real wealth and not pieces of

gold and silver. Live life to the full in 2015. Lastly, remember that

today is the oldest you've ever been, yet the youngest you'll ever

be so enjoy this day whilst it lasts.

WORLD WAR 1 REMEMBRANCE

THE BATTLE OF ARMENTIERES

OCTOBER 1914

Peter Spencer has sent us this

fascinating reminder of World War 1.

The Buckhurst Hill Branch of the

Royal British Legion were invited to Armentieres, on the border

between France and Belgium, by the Mayor, to join in

commemoration ceremonies in remembrance of the thousands of

soldiers who died in the ‘’Race to the Sea’’ in 1914 and later on

the Western front between 1914 and 1918. One of the early

battles was fought at Armentieres and it became a stronghold of

the British Army, with trenches forming the front line only two

kilometres from the town.

On arrival the group from England were met by a young lady from

the tourist office and a local archivist, who led a tour around the

Town Hall, which had been built in 1934 and contained stained

glass windows and figures of a giant man and woman. The

medieval centre of the town around the building had been

destroyed during the Great War, by bombing, shelling and

machine gun fire. Many civilian residents died, along with the

soldiers, some when mustard gas was fired at the town in 1917.

In the evening, the group were invited to a bar where French

volunteers dressed in British, French and German uniforms from

1914 and joined them for dinner. The volunteers were camped in

tents nearby and were preparing to re-enact the battle with the

Germans the next day.

On Saturday, the Mayor officially opened the re-enactments in the

local nature reserve and the English were invited to a Republican

Banquet for 300 people in the evening. A buffet of food on long

tables was consumed by the guests, together with cocktails, wine

and beer. Two cabaret performers, a singer of old songs and an

accordion player entertained the guests, as they would have

entertained the troops in the war, to keep up their morale.

On Sunday, wreaths were laid at the military cemetery and the

English group marched behind the volunteer soldiers to the front

of the town hall where more wreaths were laid at the Cenotaph.

The British wore poppies and the French wore blue cornflowers.

A museum in the cinema near the station was showing a film

taken from the air in 1919, which recorded the ruins of the town

following the Germans advance in 1918 and the battle of the river

Lys, which was fought before they were thrown back again. There

was a re-construction of a French café in 1914 in the museum

which inspired the composing of the old music hall song ‘’ The

Mademoiselle from Armentieres’’

On Monday two off-duty French gendarmes took the English group

by coach over the nearby Belgium border to the Commonwealth

cemeteries, Hyde Park Corner, Tyne Cot and Passchendaele

(opened by the Queen in 2007) and museums at Ploegsteert (Plug

street ) and Passchendale, where a long line of trenches had been

re-constructed.

In the evening, the group witnessed the sounding of the last post

by the local fire brigade buglers at the Menin Gate in Ypres, which

has taken place every night at 8.00 p.m. since the 1920’s, except

during WW2. A Scottish band and bagpipes played afterwards

and more wreaths were laid. Thousands of people attend the

ceremony every night, nearly a hundred years after the Great War.

Ever walk into a room with some purpose in mind, only to

completely forget what that purpose was? Turns out, doors

themselves are to blame for these strange memory lapses.

Psychologists have discovered that passing through a doorway

triggers what's known as an Event Boundary in the mind,

separating one set of thoughts and memories from the next. Your

brain files away the thoughts you had in the previous room and

prepares a blank slate for the new locale. Thank goodness for

studies like this. It's not our age, it's that darn door! Did I send this

to you already from the other room?

Morris, an 82 year-old man, went to the doctor to get a physical. A

few days later, the doctor saw Morris walking down the street with

a gorgeous young woman on his arm. A couple of days later, the

doctor spoke to Morris and said, 'You're really doing great, aren't

you?' Morris replied, 'Just doing what you said, Doc: Get a hot

mamma and be cheerful’ The doctor said, 'I didn't say that. I said,

'You've got a heart murmur, be careful’.

‘Nothing’ Husband says ‘ But you did that all day yesterday.’ Wife

retorts ‘I haven’t finished yet’.

Grandpa was telling his young grandson what life was like when

he was a boy."In the winter we’d ice skate on our pond. In the

summer we could swim in the pond and pick berries in the woods.

We’d swing on an old tyre my dad hung from a tree on a rope. And

we had a pony we rode all over the farm." The little boy was

amazed, and sat silently for a minute. Finally he said, "Granddad, I

wish I’d gotten to know you a lot sooner."

SILVER SURFER

GRANDMA

DISAPPEARS INTO

CYBERSPACE

The computer swallowed Grandma. Yes, honestly it’s true.

She pressed 'control' and 'enter' and disappeared from view.

It ate her up completely and the thought just makes me squirm.

She must have caught a virus, or been eaten by a worm.

I've searched in her recycle bin and files of every kind.

I've even tried on Facebook, but nothing did I find.

I typed her name in Google, my searches to refine.

The result from them was fruitless, not a thing was found 'online.'

So, if inside your 'Inbox,' my Grandma you should see,

Attach her to an email and send her back to me!
