MAKING A DIFFERENCE

LEXINGTON ENTREPRENEUR J IM HOST VALUES KET’S SERVICE TO THE STATE

Who elseKETbut ?

especially educational programs and resources distributed online to teachers and students in every classroom statewide.

“KET provides the only way that it really works,” Host notes. “It provides young people a way to be educated when they don’t have the opportunity to do it otherwise. And now we have a lot of homeschooling, and people can use KET for that purpose.”

Host acknowledges that while technology and indeed the world has changed since the 1960s, KET’s value has only increased.

“I value KET for doing things that no one else can,” he asserted. “First in education, second, making sure that people in this state understand what its government is doing, and third, to provide the arts in a way that no one else is able to do, especially music. Music is such a vital part of our culture.”

Additionally, Host looks to KET to help children in every corner of the state have access to arts instruction efficiently online, which he feels will aid them in reaching their goals.

Host also points to lifelong learning as key to KET’s mission.

“I feel so strongly about what KET provides,” he said. “It provides a quality of life and education for young people and television shows that they’re not going to get any other way.”

KET provides PBS and other nationally sourced programming alongside locally produced programs; and instructional and educational

resources, materials, and technology training for schools. Host says these offerings position KET to serve a diverse population.

“They can be offered on KET because it has its niche in programming,” he said. “It certainly has its niche in education. It has its niche in children’s programming that does not exist anywhere else on television.”

JIM HOST IS A KENTUCKIAN THROUGH AND THROUGH. He first came to love the state while growing up in

Ashland, where it seemed like everyone cheered for the University of Kentucky Wildcats. Naturally he wanted to attend school there, and getting one of the university’s first baseball scholarships made that dream come true.

After playing in the major leagues he founded Host Communications, a pioneering collegiate sports marketing and production services company. Through his career in broadcasting, he travelled to nearly every corner of the state, where he grew to value each citizen.

Host embraced KET early— so early, in fact, that it was still just a dream of one of his University of Kentucky professors.

That professor was O. Leonard Press, the broadcast teacher and visionary who founded Kentucky Educational Television.

“I took my first courses under Len Press and I got to know him,” remembered Host. Press, he said, was one of the UK professors who had an early impact on his life.

“I remember him talking to us one day in class, and him saying, ‘think what you could do for this state if you could do education with television.’ That’s when I first learned of his vision.”

Host’s intersection with Press and KET didn’t end in his university days. Later, Host was tapped by Gov. Louie Nunn to become the youngest member of his cabinet at the age of 29. In that position, he saw KET funded and Press’ dream realized.

Today, Host praises the breadth of KET’s services,

“I VALUE KET FOR DOING THINGS THAT NO ONE ELSE CAN. FIRST IN EDUCATION, SECOND, MAKING SURE THAT PEOPLE IN THIS STATE UNDERSTAND WHAT ITS GOVERNMENT IS DOING, AND THIRD, TO PROVIDE THE ARTS IN A WAY THAT NO ONE ELSE IS ABLE TO DO.”

Essentially EasternNew EKU history details institution’s evolution

Learn the history of Eastern Kentucky University from its beginnings in 1874, to a state normal school in 1906,

a state college and, eventually in 1966, a university in The Essential Eastern: A History of Eastern Kentucky University. It premieres Monday, March 28 at 9/8 pm on KET.

Through two world wars and other military conflicts, the Great Depression, the Civil Rights Movement and inte-gration, the program touches on the historical events and cultural and societal issues that helped shape the campus and

the students, faculty, and staff who have called it home. It is narrated by Nick Clooney.

“As with many educational institutions, Eastern has endured its share of victories and setbacks. But one thing remained clear, and that is a strong sense of community and institutional pride,” said producer Chad Cogdill.

The Essential Eastern also airs Tuesday, March 29 at 10:30/9:30 pm and Wednesday, March 30 at 10:30/9:30 am on KET KY.

Discover the literary luminaries honored this year in Kentucky Writers Hall of Fame Ceremony 2016, pre-miering Monday, March 21 at 10/9 pm on KET.

Held in January in Lexington, the ceremony hon-ored writers Bobbie Ann Mason, James Lane Allen, Harlan Hubbard, Alice Hegan Rice, and Jean Ritchie.

Mason’s work includes In Country, Feather Crowns, and The Girl in the Blue Beret.

Allen (1849-1925) was a novelist and short-story writer. An artist and writer, Hubbard (1900-1988) and his wife, Anna, are known for their simple lives. He describes how they lived in Shantyboat, Payne Hollow: Life on the Fringe of Society and in a number of journals. Shelbyville native Rice (1870-1942) wrote more than two dozen books — the most famous of which is Mrs. Wiggs of the Cabbage Patch, set in Louisville.

Ritchie (1922-2015), the subject of KET’s documentary Mountain Born, was an author and folk-music legend, bringing the traditional songs of the Kentucky mountains to people worldwide as part of the folk music movement of the 1960s.

You can also catch the program on its premiere on the Kentucky Channel on Monday, March 7 at 9/8 pm, as well as other times throughout the month.

KET helps childcare workers prepare at-risk children for kindergarten

As many as 50 percent of Kentucky preschoolers are unprepared for kindergarten — and kindergarten readiness is a powerful indica-tor of whether a child succeeds in school.

In response, KET has developed the Everyday Learning train-ing program for childcare providers. In January, more than 60 pre-school directors and caregivers from low-income neighborhoods in Louisville took advantage of free early childhood training offered by KET. Last year, KET provided 210 courses and training events to 4,300 childcare workers and 4,000 parents, impacting an estimated 90,000 children.

KET’s Everyday Learning offers the tools and knowledge caregiv-ers need to ensure they are preparing children with the skills they will need to suceed in kindergarten and beyond.

Each educator leaves a training session with a curriculum toolkit, conveniently organized in binders, offering lesson plans and training materials.

“Going through and doing lesson plans is a lot of work,” said an excited Lana Albin, a caregiver at the MiniVersity in downtown Louisville who attended the January session. “This is all put together.”

Another caregiver, Charity Johnson, has experienced many pre-school caregiver training programs. “I would definitely give it a 10,” she said.

Everyday Learning Training provided by KET is made possible in part through a grant from the James Graham Brown and PNC Foundations and in partnership with the National Center for Families Learning and Metro United Way.

March is always a special time for KET, a time when viewers connect with us and demonstrate their support of the pro-gramming they value throughout the year.

As a grandmother to five preschool-aged children, PBS Kids programming is a constant presence with my family. Just like you, we count on Daniel Tiger, The Cat in the Hat, and Curious George for safe, non-violent, commercial-free, educational experiences on television and online. When you watch KET, you’ve probably seen “…and to Viewers Like You” signaling the appreciation for viewers’ contribu-tions that help make programs possible.

Contributions from individuals support the purchase of programs that you and your fam-ily enjoy — from popular children’s series to “Downton Abbey” and “Poldark” on Masterpiece, Antiques Roadshow, Nova and Nature, and more.

We purchase these programs from PBS and other sources, making them available to you and your neighbors. KET strives to provide access to the best in arts and culture, history and heritage, and educational programming.

So, this month, during TeleFund, we invite you to show your support for the programs you and your family enjoy.

It truly is viewers like you who provide these programs each and every day on KET.

Thank you for your continued support and help in making it all possible.
