March 2016 Junior Division 1st place overall winners at Washington County Livestock judging contest High School 4-H Extension agent Elijah Wilson, recently visited senior classrooms to discuss how to write a resume and job interview techniques. Sophomores at Cumberland County High School participated in the Reality Store on March 18th. Regular 4-H club meetings are held monthly in the library and any one who wants to attend Teen Conference should be sure to attend. Middle School 4-H: All students at Cumberland County Middle School get to patriciate in monthly 4-H club meetings held during the school day. In addition, 8th grade students got to participate in the 4-H Reality Store and 6th grade 4-H members are going on a field trip to Frankfort and to visit the University of Kentucky. Elementary School 4-H: Both 4th and 5th grade 4-H clubs have been meeting during the school day monthly since the beginning of the school year. During the March meeting, 4-H members learned about 4-H camp. In addition, 5th grade students have been participating in 4-H Mini Society program led by Debbie Messenger, FCS Agent. Positive Youth Development The goal of the Cumberland County 4-H program is to promote positive youth de- velopment, facilitate learning, and engage youth in the work of the University of Kentucky, Kentucky State University, and USDA to enhance their quality of life. Cumberland County 4-H offers programs during the school day and during the summer months via school enrichment programs, clubs, camps, and events. 4-H is for youth ages 9 through 18 years old. So no matter what grade level you are in, there are opportunities for you. 4-H provides all of the essential elements needed for a successful transition to adulthood including the need for belonging, opportuni- ty to experience independence, generosity, and mastery of skill. Washington County Livestock judging contest

High School 4-H

Extension agent Elijah Wilson, recently visited senior classrooms to discuss how to

write a resume and job interview techniques. Sophomores at Cumberland County High

School participated in the Reality Store on March 18th. Regular 4-H club meetings are

held monthly in the library and any one who wants to attend Teen Conference should be

sure to attend.

Middle School 4-H:

All students at Cumberland County Middle School get to patriciate in monthly 4-H club

meetings held during the school day. In addition, 8th grade students got to participate in

Each year youth ages 9-14 from Cumberland County get a chance to attend Lake Cumberland 4-H Camp in Jabez, Kentucky. 4-H members get

to stay in cabins with their friends from Cumberland County while getting to meet other youth from around the state. While at camp, youth get to

shoot firearms, climb walls, dance, and a ton of other fun things. 4-H Camp is a positive youth development program that focuses on creating a

sense of belonging and an opportunity to experience independence. 2016 Camp Dates are July 11-15. The cost to attend is $200 (Includes

13 Meals, 5 Snacks, Transportation, and a T-shirt)

Communication and Expressive Arts One thing that is synonymous with Kentucky 4-H is communication contests. A majority of elected state officials credit 4-H for helping them to

acquire the essential communication skills needed to lead. Annually, the Cumberland County 4-H program offers local youth a chance to

showcase their communication skills. The date for this years showcase is April 12th. Youth can participate in one or more of the contests.

Participants in the contest are recognized with ribbons and category champions advance to the Area Showcase of Stars at Lindsey Wilson

College on May 14th. Each one of the communication contests has specific rules.

Speeches can be on any topic. Professional dress is encouraged and props can not be used. The time limit is 3-5 minutes for ages 9-13 year

olds and 5-7 minutes for 14-18 year olds. (NO VISUAL AIDS OR DRAMATIC READINGS)

Demonstrations: Junior/Senior age categories, same as speeches but broken into categories such as foods, wood-working, etc. Demonstra-

tions will have 5-15 minutes to present.

Written Communications consist of similar rules with categories in songwriting, poetry, essay, monologue, press release, public service an-

nouncement.

Each year 6th grade students get to visit the capital building In Frankfort and The University of Kentucky campus in Lexington. This year the trip

is scheduled for March the 22nd. Sixth grade 4-H members will depart from the Middle School at 7:30am and will return at approximately

4:30pm. In order to attend youth must return the permission slip in to school administration . Professional dress is encouraged and youth will

need to bring money to cover lunch.

The Cumberland County Fishing Club has met many times this school year which included a fishing trip to Wolf creek dam and Cumberland river.

Currently the club is in the process of planning a fishing tournament held at Dale Hollow Lake for late Spring. If you are interested in going on the

next fishing club trip on April 4th, please contact Elijah Wilson.

Kentucky 4-H Teen Conference is scheduled for June 13-16 at The University of Kentucky. Youth get to stay in dorms, attend classes, and eat

in the college cafeteria. The cost of the conference is $250 which includes food, transportation, and lodging. High School Students and those

who are scheduled to graduate 8th grade this year are able to attend. A $50 deposit is required by April 19th to attend. For those who wish to

fundraise to cover the cost are encouraged to attend the 4-H Camp Club meetings.

Each year the Cumberland County 4-H program in collaboration with the Cumberland County Chamber of Commerce helps local High School Seniors prepare to enter the work force and a chance to win a $500 higher education scholarship. As part of the application process youth prepare a resume and participate in a mock interview. For help preparing your resume, interview tips, and specifics about the contest contact Elijah Wilson.

At the last 4-H Camp Club meeting, members voted to elect officers and voted on having a Bake Sale/ Car Wash April 16th. The next meeting

is scheduled for April 11th at 5:00pm at the Extension Office. By: Reporter Molly Wilson Key. At the meeting, we will discuss the details of the

first fundraiser and the Super Sally. So be sure to attend the meeting.

With so much going on in 4-H sometimes its difficult to keep up with programs, meetings,

deadlines, events, and activities, etc. To help you stay up to date we have created a re-
