I’ve been expecting you
Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desertto be tempted by the devil” – Matt 4v1
During the season of Lent, Christiansremember how Jesus was tempted inthe desert before the start of his ministryand how, with God’s strength, heresisted temptation and survived hisconfrontation with the devil. If we readSt Matthew’s account of Jesus’temptation, we will see that Jesus wastempted in various different ways – andthat he resisted these temptations. Hecame face to face with the evil one in away that many of us have not and –crucially– he recognised the devil and histemptations for what they were –destructive lies!
If we want to live a good life thathonours God, we too must resisttemptation. But the question for us thisLent is: how can we recognisetemptation when we see it in our lives? For many of us in the developed world,we live in a place of comfort, complacency and rampant materialism –and yet with increasingly fewer morallandmarks and comfortable certainties. There are many ways we can take it easyin life, and there is no motivation to doanything the hard way.
So how can we know when we arebeing confronted with real spiritualtemptation in our world? The clue is
there in Jesus’ confrontation with theDevil. If we believe that we can be self-sufficient, that we can always putourselves first at the cost of others, thatwe can be invincible through whateverpower we can wield – then we aredeceiving ourselves, because this is nothow it really is in the world that Godhas created and redeemed - and willultimately judge.
Satan lied to Jesus – and that is why, elsewhere, Jesus calls Satan the father oflies (John 8v44). But Jesus saw throughthe lies in his world – and we must learnto see through the lies in ours.Temptation for us might be to dosomething we shouldn’t – or perhaps tonot do something that we should. But,either way, it will involve giving in to adangerous delusion.
And, while we might not have a Bondvillain-style confrontation with Satan asJesus did, we should be expecting thatimpostor, temptation, at any time and inany place inour flawedand fallenworld. Andit mattersthat we winagainst himin our lives. The firstpart ofresistingtemptationis to be alert

and discerning when temptation comesto call – and, thankfully, with God’shelp through the Holy Spirit, we can beready, if we pray regularly and reflectcarefully on the complexities of ourworld.
May I wish you all a wise, discerning, holy – and victorious! – Lent.
With best wishes,
Stephen

Another busy month in the life of StAndrew’s! Here is just a flavour:
Our school value this Termhas been Courage
We have been exploring Biblestories and other text on the themes of‘Facing our Fears’, ‘Doing the rightthing, not the easy thing’ and Givingothers courage. We have realised thathaving courage doesn’t take the worryand fear away. But we realise that whenwe face our fears and remember thatothers are there to support us and helpus through, good things are often on theother side.
Celebratingour children
Each Friday morning is the highlight ofour week as we celebrate the ongoingachievements of the children. It was
lovely to welcome so many parents tothe school once again this month as wellas seven W.I. members who also joinedus for coffee from 8.30am. This is awonderful opportunity to hear a little ofwhat the children have done as a fewindividuals share pieces of work they areparticularly proud of. Please do drop inon the final Friday morning of eachterm if you would like to have a glimpseof school life. Open to you all.
We like to provide the children with asmany opportunities as we can to exceland demonstrate their love of learningthrough whichever means they choose. Our homework projects give them thisplatform: The children’s spectaculartopic homework projects are put ondisplay during the last week of term.Such attention to detail is given tomaking these projects so fantastic; a realcelebration of the children’s learningthrough the term.

Chedworth Parish CouncilNews from our FebruaryMeeting
It’s not all about the housing
The Parish Council needs afew minutes of your time tohelp us find out if there is stilla need for affordable housingin Chedworth.
We have compiled a new survey, included with this edition of the Hill andValley, which also includes questions onwhat you think our priorities should be.
Please take the time to fill out and returnthe form - even if you don’t have ahousing need, your views on what isimportant to you in the village will helpus when making decisions on what weshould do and how we should spendyour money.
The subject of building new housing inthe village always sparks strong feelingsand it is important for the ParishCouncil to have firm facts about exactlywhat the need is to help us makedecisions when any opportunity comesforward. If you don’t receive your copy of thesurvey please contact a member of thecouncil or clerk.
Drop in session proved useful
The Drop-in session which the ParishCouncil organised so that villagers couldmeet representatives from ThamesWater, the police, the Ambulance serviceand our county councillor provedvaluable for all concerned.A steady stream of villagers learnt aboutcrime prevention and first aid whileThames Water were given plenty offeedback about what impact the watershortages had on the village.Parish Councillors were also givenplenty of helpful advice by theambulance trust who had lots ofpotentially life-saving information topass on. Their top tips were:-
1. Know yournumbers. To makesure that theambulance can find
you as fast as possible you shouldbe able to tell them your gridreference when you call. Many years

Maggie’s Poem
Was sent a little poemAbout a garden gnome
Was put there with his shining faceWith no legs he couldn’t roam
So had to sit where he was putIn among the flowers
He hadn’t got a partnerSo used his magic powers
People came to look at himHe turned on all his charm
Until someone came and picked him upAnd held him on their arm
This little chap can’t be aloneAnother I must find
So brought along a pretty wifeThat’s what he had in mind
They now are a very happy pairNo more be on his own
Being in this lovely gardenHas no more urge to roam

Sue Ryder had a simple ethos,“Do what you can for the person infront of you” and she called the homesSOS areas.

Chedworth CC Awarded aGrant
It is with great pleasure and alsogratitude that I am able to reportthat we have been awarded a grantfrom the England and Wales CricketTrust (EWCT). As reported in theFebruary edition of the Hill andValley, we had made an application, under the Small Grant Scheme, toraise the necessary funds topurchase new mobile ground coversfor our ground at Beech Walk. Wehave received confirmation from theEWCT that they will contribute76% towards the cost. The Club willmeet the remainder of the cost fromour funds as the “partnercontribution”.
The suppliers of the mobile groundcovers have confirmed that they areable to deliver the equipment beforethe start on the forthcoming season. So, this will definitely help us to“get the game on” when faced withinclement summer weather!

Our January meeting was an informalget together centred on a GeneralKnowledge Quiz which included a lotof questions relating to the 1950’s. Itproved our memories and brain powerare still in excellent shape.
At our February meeting we werepleased to welcome a group fromChedworth Singers. They sang a medleyof traditional tunes some more seriouslike Be Still My Soul and The AshGrove; many more were moreboisterous which we all enjoyed singing. They included favourites such as We’reForever Blowing, Bubbles, When I’m 64
(if only!) and The Jolly Swagman. Wereally enjoyed the whole afternoon.
Next month we are off to DobbiesGarden Centre for tea and cake and abrowse around the numerous outletstores and with Spring not far awayperhaps also a good look at the plants.
As always we offer a very warmwelcome to anyone over the age of 60to join us on the third Wednesday ofevery month starting at 2.30pm.

Yoga Classes
GENTLE YOGA CLASSESat COLN VALLEY
by Anne Sutherland
Over the last few years I haverecommenced teaching yoga in theCotswolds area. Perhaps because I wasbrought up on a farm in New Zealand,I feel at home in the countryside hereand have enjoyed living inGloucestershire for several years. In2015 I started some yoga classes in theColn Valley Village Hall and we delightin experiencing the daily rhythm of rurallife…the horses being exercised, swanson the river, the odd fox running alonga fence-line, the sheep eagerly awaitingtheir winter feed, mist lifting and snowyegrets delicately exploring…totallystunning! All happening while we workthrough our yoga programme in thecosy warmth of the hall. A totalprivilege to live in this part of the world!
As a teacher I have observed the needfor a gentler pace as our bodies mature. Most people are working withsomething….whether a fracture or two, injury, back or neck trouble, surgery orsome kind of medical history. Evenyounger ones today are challenged byrestrictions in muscles due to lifestylefactors. Add to this the numerousmental stresses of the busy lives we
create for ourselves! Life can be achallenge.
In response to this need, we havedesigned programmes which givestudents support, using a variety ofprops like chairs, folded blankets, blocksand straps…to enable everyone to do totheir ability. It has also been importantto create an atmosphere in class wherepeople feel safe and respected if theychoose NOT to do something. Theonly pre-requisite to attendance is thatyou can get down on the floor. Studentsalso bring a mat and a blanket to class.Other gear is provided. Both teachersare fully qualified and insured. Youwork at your pace yet learn how to geta good stretch and build strength in the
body too. Poses are designed to increasejoint and muscle mobility followed by afull body relaxation at the end.
At present we have two classesoperating from the Coln Valley VillageHall: Monday at 9-10.15am with Nickiand Thursday at 10.30-11.45am withmyself. Both have vacancies. Classes runsteadily throughout the year and youenrol for a course of usually about 8-10
Advertising - 01285 720 683 29
classes. If you have to miss a class oneweek, you can attend the other one tomake up that missed class…so a littleflexibility there. Courses work out at£10 a class but you pre-enrol for theterm.
For those uncertain about committing, you can try one class for £10 thendecide. There are no drop ins. Thismeans we can plan more effectively fora particular group of students, and youwill get to experience some changes inyour body by coming regularly.Everyone is welcome. Please don'thesitate to contact me to clarify anyqueries.
Looking forward to meeting more ofyou soon!
Best Wishes for 2017

Smile LinesMen and women
Three men were hiking through a forestwhen they came upon a large ragingriver. Needing to get on the other side, the first man prayed, "God, please giveme the strength to cross the river."Poof! God gave him big arms andstrong legs and he was able to swimacross in about two hours, havingalmost drowned twice.
After witnessing that, the second manprayed, "God, please give me strengthand the tools to cross the river." Poof!God gave him a rowboat and strongarms and strong legs and he was able torow across in about an hour afteralmost capsizing once.
Seeing what happened to the first twomen, the third man prayed, "God,please give me the strength, the toolsand the intelligence to cross the river."Poof! He was turned into a woman. Shechecked the map, went one hundredyards up stream and walked across thebridge.

Your child has started growing up whenhe stops asking you where he camefrom, and starts refusing to tell youwhere he's going.
Holding
Little Johnny asked his Grandma howold she was. Grandma answered, "39and holding." Johnny thought about thatand then asked: "And how old wouldyou be if you let go?
Sent away
An irritated mother complained to herfriend: “When I was a kid, my parentssent me to my room without supper if Imisbehaved. But my son has his ownTV, telephone, computer, and everycomputer game and CD player in hisroom!"
"So how do you handle it?" her friendasked.
"I send him to MY room!"
On the road
A teenager was always asking his parentsif he could borrow the family car.Pushed to the limit one day, the fatherdemanded of his son why he thought‘The Almighty’ had given him two feet.Without hesitation, the son replied:"That's easy, one for the clutch and onefor the accelerator."

Village Hall NewsBringing better mobile phone coverage to Chedworth +Supporting the Village Hall
The Village Hall Committee has received a proposal to site a telecoms pole at theVillage Hall.
A company named Shared Access has identified the Village Hall as a suitable locationfor a pole to provide enhanced 4G mobile telephone coverage for the ChedworthValley.
The pole concept is a state of the art solution to mobile phone transmission and ismuch smaller, much less obtrusive and much less powerful than previous proposalsfor improved mobile phone coverage.
Shared Access will pay all the costs involved and in addition will pay the Village HallCharity some £25,000 as a single payment for a 25 year lease.
The Committee are in the process of consulting Chedworth residents and apresentation and question and answer session with “Shared Access” is beingarranged.
You may have already received the explanatory letter being sent to Chedworthresidents with the dates and times of the presentation.
Full details will be put on our website and Facebook page as soon as they becomeavailable.
If you would like to discuss this proposal further please ring me on 01285 720313.
