Behind the Spray Gun

Since finishing the BMW and doing a couple of small jobs in between I have finally got around to tackling my Fathers MGC GTS. The eagle eye reader will be querying the 'S'

on the end of the 'GT'. This stands for Sebring, as in the race track in America. The reason for this is that in the mid/late 60s BL sent a few of their new MGC's to enter in the race series; and to fit wider tyres they flared out the arches and created the iconic Sebring look. Now originally they were made out of rolled aluminium, but now-a-days you can buy fibreglass articles off the shelf. However this car is different because the arches are made of steel which is much more challenging. Since undertaking the job I have Stripped the old green paint and re shaped the arches and the rest of the body

then applied epoxy primer and spray filler to get perfectly straight panels.

A Sylva Story

My first car was a very pedestrian Opel Kadette ( the slightly German version of the very humble Vauxhall Chevette ). The previous owner was best friend who belonged to, who used it in various club motor sport events. It was beige & brown vinyl but stood up to a

regular mild thrashing from Bournemouth to mid Sussex with just single cam chain breakage along the way. After a couple of years the time came for a side-grade to

something more interesting. After having a look round for something faster, cheap, and with the possibility of development I bought a pre-built Sylva Star. Powered by 1600

Ford Cross flow, chassis and body work by Sylva on sub frame suspension by Vauxhall Viva. This white two seater, soft top was such enormous fun on just about every

occasion. However with beauty comes compromise, the Sylva Star had a couple of vices, carb icing on very cold nights, the ability for water to find it’s way from the front tyres, under the side screen and into the passenger’s lap. The heater, recycled from a

mini, worked on occasions but there was no sign of de-misters.

This was the car that helped develop an interest in car fixing and tinkering. Keeping the car running, as this was my only powered transport, was a regular weekend occupation. The single downdraught was upgraded to a side mounted Delloro, and the electrics were reworked to improve the earthing circuit and lighting performance. The cross country A-road trip was it’s speciality with Working to Portsmouth A27 and Woking - Guildford - Sussex A281 particularly preferred. It managed a short outing at Goodwood for the club car day where it suffered fuel starvation followed by a blown a head gasket. Sigh - good times. Another notable breakdown was the clutch cable pulling through the bulkhead doing a visit to Lullworth cove. That was fixed with the help of local AA bloke who like every other motor service profession said “Sylva Star, where on earth do I get parts for that ?” then looks a little closer, uses a bit of creativity and comes out with “I recognise that bit - its from a …. "

After a few years I sold the Star and bought a Sylva Leader which was a later upgraded similar model. The Leader was more of the same great car but built to a higher standard with quality bits and care and attention to details. Featuring a Vauxhall 7 dial dash from a Magnum, fully ported Cross flow with twin 40 Webber’s and tidier body work. The Leader had been built by same friend from who I got the Opel. This was a lovely car that went and sounded great. A full length exhaust with just a couple of Cherry Bomb boxes gave the car a deep resonant note to combine with the intake whistle from twin 40s. It did drink though, using as much fuel standing still as going flat out.

The other side of the car that made it great was the community of owners. Each car, being individually hand built often by the owner, inspired great love and loyalty. There was a club/Register that ran for about 10 years with both road and race owners. The occasional newsletter was of course called "The Sylva Bulletin.” We did a few track days and gathered up and various car shows. I did find that a single look at the wiring under the dashboard would, at a glance, show the build standard of any car.

Sylva has long history of motor sport being a staple of various 750 motor club race series. See more about the past and current cars here http://www.sylva.co.uk/the-sylva-story/

As practical every day family transport, after daughter arrived, it was not so great and had to go to. I miss the tinkering and the agile driving down long empty A roads.

A very interesting read, thanks Clive. White must have been a popular colour back then!
