Julian of Norwich was a 15th Century English mystic and

anchoress, a woman who chose to live a life in-tensely devoted to prayer permanently enclosed in a small room, an anchorhold, attached to a parish church. Thomas Merton called her "the greatest the-ologian for our time." These gatherings are initiated and supported by the Order of Julian of Norwich (www.orderofjulian.org). The gatherings are open to all who want to deep-en their life of faith through the practice of contem-plative prayer, for beginners as well as those already practicing. Each meeting includes time for contem-plative prayer, fellowship, and reading/discussion of Julian's book. At the beginning of each meeting, brief instruction on the practice of contemplative prayer is offered. We meet the second Wednesday of each monthfrom1:00 to 2:45 PM. • Episcopal Church Women of Province V Conference and Annual Meeting

    April 28-30, 2017 Lansing, Michigan

Keynote Speaker: Lelanda Lee The Episcopal Church Women of the Diocese of Western Michigan are pleased to announce that registration is now open for the Province V ECW Con-ference and Annual Meeting to be held Friday through Sunday, April 28 – 30, at

St. David’s Episcopal Church, Lansing, Michigan. The conference will open for registration check-in beginning at 4:00 p.m. Friday and close on Sunday following the morning Eucharist. We have a full and exciting weekend planned. This year’s general business meeting is especially im-portant since it includes election of the Province V ECW Representative to the National ECW Board, and the United Thank Offering Province V Representative to the National ECW Board, for three year terms beginning in 2018. For your spiritual enrichment, our keynote speaker and leader for the week- end is Lelanda Lee. Lelanda will be leading us in “Exploring the Meaning of Being My Sister’s Keeper” through prayer, storytelling, reflection, and practical exercises. Lelanda is a writer, poet, and church and community leader, who lives in northern Colorado with her husband, mother, and brother. Raised in a refugee-immigrant Asian family in Detroit, Lelanda was shaped by Motown and the Civil Rights and Women’s Movements of the 1960s. Baptized and confirmed in the Missouri Synod Luther-an Church, Lelanda found the Episcopal Church in Amarillo, Texas, in the mid 1990s, when she at-tended the Episcopal day school’s children’s chapel with her 9-year old daughter. Lelanda continues her journey with the Episcopal Church while also thinking about the concoction of humanity’s longings and foibles – how desire, envy, and loss become the heartbeat of the people. The conference registration fee is $90. This includes all your conference costs plus a catered din-ner on Friday evening and lunch on Saturday afternoon. You can register and pay online or mail the attached registration form. Cancellation fees are $15 prior to April 1, $25 between April 1-15, $50 after April 15. • 2017 Advocacy Day

People of Faith United for Justice

    Tuesday, April 4 9:00 am – 4:00 pm

First United Methodist Church Near the Capital Square

    203 Wisconsin Avenue, Madison

As people of faith we are called to join the public conversation about the common good – about the kind

of a state and nation we can be justifiably proud of, the legacy we want to leave our children and future

generations. Past generations of citizens, through government, made the decisions and investments

that benefit us today. Now it is our turn.

People of Faith United for Justice is a day-long gathering to learn, discuss, pray and advocate together

for social justice issues of importance to all the people of Wisconsin. As a new legislature starts work on

the next state budget, our representatives need to hear our values, priorities, and concerns, our expec-

tations and aspirations. Whether we expect them to agree with us or not, they need to hear from us.

Together, we can ensure that our commitment to compassion and justice is reflected in that budget.

Co-Sponsors: Wisconsin Council of Churches, Faith Voices For Justice, Interfaith Conference of

Greater Milwaukee, Lutheran Office for Public Policy, Madison Area Urban Ministry, Milwaukee Jewish

Federation, Jewish Federation of Madison and Wisconsin Jewish Conference.

Getting to Madison for Advocacy Day

There is no parking available at First United Methodist Church. Participants should plan to park nearby

at the State Street Capitol Garage located at N Carroll St and W Johnson St, across the street from

Madison College. Information about Madison parking ramps can be found here. http://www.wichurches.org/calendar/event-list/2017-advocacy-day/

THE CHALLENGE OF THE CHRISTIAN BIBLE

    June 26 - 30, 2017

Presenter: John Dominic Crossan is generally regarded as the leading historical

Jesus scholar in the world. He is the author of several bestselling books, including The

Historical Jesus, Jesus: A Revolutionary Biography and The Birth of Christianity, and Who Killed Jesus? Crossan

was educated in Ireland and the United States, received a Doctorate of Divinity from Maynooth College in Ireland

in 1959, and did post-doctoral research at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome from 1959 to 1961 and at the

École Biblique in Jerusalem from 1965 to 1967. He was a member of a thirteenth-century Roman Catholic reli-

Emeritus in its Department of Religious Studies.

Through four comprehensive lectures, Dr. Crossan will examine:

Is the God of the Christian Bible violent?

Is the historical Jesus, Rider on the Peace-Donkey of Gospel, or the apocalyptic Jesus, Rider on the War-

Horse of Revelation, the norm, criterion, and discriminant of the Christian Bible?

(Based on How to Read the Bible and Still Be a Christian: Struggling with Divine Violence from Genesis through

    Revelation. 2015).

Tuesday — “Original Sin”: Sexual Temptation or Escalatory Violence?

Wednesday — Covenantal Law: Human Destiny or Divine Sanction?

Thursday — God’s Kingdom: Violent Revolt or Non-Violent Resistance?

Friday — Christianity’s Criterion: Historical Jesus or Apocalyptic Jesus?

The Washington Island Forum is especially tailored to lay leaders and pastors who want to deepen their spirituality and

connect with the message of the scriptures in a more profound way.
