FROM THE OFFICE
To all our valued residents:
John and I want you all to know we care very much
about your safety in the community. Although we
haven't had any big issues to speak of, we feel that
we can't take risks by allowing so much uncontrolled
traffic into the park.
As well, be looking for some other great
new upgrades here at ROYAL PALM very soon.
Front entry gate
Starting 3/1/2017 our gates will remain closed 24
hours a day; we know some of you will take issue
with that, and we are sorry to make anyone unhappy.
We have been hired to take care of you all, and this
is a first and most important step for us to be able to
monitor the Park and control entry.
When our new gate system is installed all phones—
cell or landline, no matter what area code—will ac-
tivate it in response to a call from a visitor at the
gate.
You will receive a new gate clicker when we make
the gate change. We will not issue any more clickers
until the new system is installed. For those of you
who have clickers, they will continue to work until
the new, improved system is installed and function-
ing.
Emergency vehicles have their own access proce-
dures, so don't worry!
For package delivery: We are contacting UPS and
FedEx to let them know about the security gate clo-
sure change. Regular USPS mail delivery vehicles
will have their own clicker. You should let any other
delivery companies know the code you will be given.
We anticipate there could be some issues during the
conversion process ~ let’s all remain calm, though,
and we will work any bugs out of this new more se-
cure life at ROYAL PALM. This is a good thing and
will make our Park more desirable to live in.
Security cameras
All people entering the Park will be on
“Candid Camera”, with cameras
equipped for night recording as well as
day recording. This system will allow us
to monitor entry into the Park from vari-
ous locations, but the locations will not be used to
“spy” on residents.
Painting
Repainting Royal Palm common buildings started
February 2017. We hope you like the new colors!
This will give our Park a new, fresh look.
Pool and patio furniture
We have new pool and patio furniture on
order and will replace the old items soon.
Washers and dryers
We are negotiating for new washers and dryers with
an outside company.
Lighting, landscaping
We have plans for upgrading the lighting and land-
scaping in the Park with an aim to make the Park
more attractive. The focus will be on the entry and
pool areas.
Signage
Look for new or revamped signage for front entrance.
This will dress up our entrance and make the Park
more attractive.
Dog park
We treasure our four-
legged residents as well,
and realize they need an
opportunity to stretch their legs and run around. So
we will be enclosing the dog park at the front to
make it more secure for those friends.

ROYAL PALM SPOTLIGHT
Agnes Volk
You see her at Bingo, you see her at the pool, you see
her at most activities in Royal Palm. She’s the white-
haired 92-year-old lady that is always
helpful, always cheerful, and always
there. Agnes has been doing that since
1997.
She first came here to Royal Palm in
1990 with her husband, Frank. They were
from Bay City, Michigan, where Agnes
worked in the office at a local hospital
for 26 years and Frank worked for the
local gas company as a serviceman. In
earlier years they had gone to Florida in
winters to temporarily escape the Michi-
gan cold, but two of their three sons lived
in the Phoenix area and so after Agnes
and Frank both retired in 1979 they decided
to come to Phoenix instead. They spent three months
in the area in 1980 and then returned each year.
At first they rented furnished apartments in this area.
Of course “furnished” only referred to the big things
but did not include pots and pans and all that, so they
stored those other items with one of the kids when
they returned to Michigan for the summer. At first
they drove from Bay
City to Phoenix but
then they kept a car in
both Bay City and
Phoenix, and flew
back and forth.
By 1990 they decided
to quit moving into
and out of apartments
and looked around for
a place to buy. Rea-
sonable housing was
hard to find and Royal
Palm attracted them, so they had the Realtor who
lived in Royal Palm at the time look for places com-
ing on the market and soon found the house at D58
and bought it.
For the next few years they continued the seasonal
back and forth between Bay City and Phoenix but in
1996 they sold their Bay City house and moved to
Royal Palm fulltime.
Their time in Phoenix had been good and
Frank had enjoyed it, but he died in 1997 so
did not get much time here fulltime. Agnes
began to get involved here soon after.
In the years when they were coming to
Phoenix for winters she and Frank did a lot
of regional traveling, with trips to California
and Nevada. But that traveling stopped after
Frank died.
She headed up the Food Committee for
many years. The Food Committee did all the
potlucks, the dinners, and the breakfasts at
the time. And she became involved in Bingo
right away as well and continues as a helper in
Bingo today. And she was a Member At Large in the
Royal Palm Social Club (formerly the Royal Palm
Park Association) for many years.
As can be imagined, Agnes has seen many changes
over the 27 years she has lived in Royal Palm.
Among the largest changes is the average age of the
residents. Today there are more in the younger age
range and more resi-
dents work outside the
home than before. In
those earlier times it was
probably more of a re-
tirement community.
But she thinks Royal
Palm is still a great
place to live. She loves
the people she knows
here in the Park, enjoys
all the activities, and
likes the feeling of safe-
ty in living here.
All her family, including 3 grandchildren and “2¾”
great-grandchildren, live in the Phoenix area so she is
happy to have all her family nearby.

Medical Shed Cleaned Out
Who knows when (if ever) the medical shed has been
cleaned out!?! A team consisting of Elaine Violette,
George Loonsfoot, and Dale and Betty Stroh did that
major job this morning. As you can see in the photo
below, the medicAl shed houses all kinds of medical
equipment that is available for any resident to bor-
row. There are wheelchairs, walkers, shower chairs,
toilet riser seats, crutches, canes, and other miscella-
neous equipment for residents to use as needed. They
found much equipment in excess of what is needed
by Royal Palm, so the extras are being donated to
Hospice of the Valley’s White Dove Thrift Shop.

FEBRUARY POTLUCK DINNER
About 30 Royal Palm residents joined together on
Saturday night, February 11th, to share food and
good times. These monthly potluck dinners are just
part of the community we share and enjoy, and resi-
dents see them as another opportunity to be with
Annie Wallace, Fran Hedrick, and Mary McDougale checking the layout of food for the potluck dinner
friends, make new friends, and have a good meal
while they are at it. There are always some great
choices, and you can even start with dessert if you
want to!
Part of the improvements for the Park include these new lights
along the west fence of the common area. This will make it
safer to walk and park at night. Watch for more!

Phishing Scams
There are many ways thieves use to try to get money
from us or to harm us in some way. Phishing is one
of them. Phishing scams are typically fraudulent
email messages appearing to come from legitimate
enterprises (e.g., your university, your Internet ser-
vice provider, your bank). These messages usually
direct you to a spoofed website or otherwise get you
to divulge private information. The example below,
taken from a Microsoft web page, shows some com-
mon things you might see in a phishing email that
can help you be aware of danger and avoid it. The
first thing that should tip you off is the threat. The
second is instructions to provide personal information
by clicking on a link. If you are requested to click a
link in an email, first check it by holding your mouse
cursor over the link, but do not click, and checKing
the link address in the status bar of your browser
(usually the lower left corner). If the two addresses
are not the same it should alert you to phishing.

letter is in the middle of the word, not at the front. These letters will also be in bold face. An example might look like this word:
subsCribe (but this one does not count). Collect as many such letters as there as spaces in the entry form below then unscramble
the letters to form a phrase and write the unscrambled phrase in the spaces.
OFFICIAL ENTRY FORM SHOULD BE PUT IN THE DESIGNATED BOX IN THE OFFICE BY NOON, MARCH 17th,
2017. WINNING ANSWER WILL BE DRAWN DURING THE MARCH 18th SOCIAL CLUB MEETING.
MUST BE PRESENT TO WIN. ONE ENTRY PER HOUSEHOLD/MOBILE HOME
The 3-word (9 letters) scrambled phrase is ____ ____ ____ ____ ____ ____ ____ ____ ____
FULL NAME AND LOT NUMBER - ______________________________________________
February winner was Geri Sandoval (R315)!
If you don’t want to tear your newsletter there are copies of this entry form at the office and Card Room

ROYAL PALM BLOCK WATCH
YOU Are Block Watch!
While we have a group of residents who patrol as
part of Block Watch, that is not the only aspect of
Block Watch in Royal Palm. Everyone in Royal Palm
is part of Block Watch! Some of us display Block
Watch signs at our homes that let strangers know that
they are being watched. But we should all be on the
lookout for suspicious activity such as strangers on
foot, on bicycle, or in vehicles cruising Royal Palm at
any time and especially during the evening or night
hours.
Block Watch Volunteers Added
Block Watch Captains Marvin Fitchett, Dale Stroh,
Tom Pawlak, Bob Farnham, and Mike Wright
have begun their duties; Cathy Farnham, Don Ringer,
and John Bruehler will do so once they have com-
pleted the training. .
Contact one of the Block Watch Captains for more
info about patrol duties or to volunteer.
You will see one or more of the Block Watch patrol
at the gate from 4-6 pm each day and patrolling in the
Park at random times during evening and night hours.
Their job is to be on the lookout for potential prob-
lems and to take appropriate actions. While a prime
concern is for others being in the Park who do not
belong, you can expect them to caution you if you are
speeding or doing sOmething else that can cause a
problem.
Remember—we are all Block Watch!!
They are not tasked with looking after your property,
though it might be helpful to let them (and the office)
know if you are goIng to be gone so they can be
aware of suspicious activity.
If you see suspicious activity you must report it to the
Police using either Crime Stoppers (602) 262-6151
for non-emergency crime reporting or 9-1-1 for
emergencies. Do NOT call the office or Block
Watch. It is the job of the Police to handle these mat-
ters.

Newsletters by Email, Facebook
A number of residents have signed up to receive
newsletters by email. Not only will this help reduce
the cost of producing our monthly newsletter, they
will be able to receive newsletters with full color in-
stead of just the outside covers. This will be especial-
ly great for seasonal residents since they can keep up
with happenings in Royal Palm even while they are
away. And, all newsletters will also be available at
the RoyalPalmSocialClub.com web site and the Roy-
al Palm Social Club group on Facebook.

Getting Alert Messages
The number of residents who have signed up for this
feature continues to grow! They now receive alert
messages via text on their cell phone and/or via
email, as they choose. Some elect to receive both
types. The Club can remind you of events and meet-
ings but can also alert you to something happening in
the Park about which you should be concerned. No-
tices of water shutoff, closures, Block Watch warn-
ings, or any changes in the Park are some possible
examples of the latter.
A signup form is available in the office, on bulletin
boards, or from Dave Violette (602) 803-5615 or
George Immerso (480) 628-4949 so you can author-
ize contacting you in this way.

SENIOR RESOURCES
Are you worried about being able to call for help in a
medical emergency? Are you worried that you may
fall and not be able to get up to summon help? There
have been devices available for years to help people
in situations like those but technology has helped in-
crease the usefulness of these devices. Among the
newer capabilities:
You don’t have to have a landline or even cellular
base. Devices can protect you anywhere you are.
Devices now have global positioning systems
(GPS) technology built in so the device lets help
know exactly where you are.
Devices can now detect when you have had a fall
and can automatically call for help.
Devices may have water resistance so they may
be worn in the shower, where many falls occur.
Alert systems can have access to your medical
records so responders know about critical con-
cerns for you when they arrive.
What hasn’t changed is that family members or sup-
port persons can be notified in emergencies as well as
emergency personnel.
You have a choice among pendants, wristbands, or
wall mounted buttons. Those incorporating cellular
capabilities may not work well in areas where cell
service for that carrier is weak. Those that must be
linked to a base unit only work within a certain dis-
tance from the base.
Prices for services vary between providers and most
providers offer various levels of support. Look for
activation fees, equipment fees, and monthly moni-
toring fees, but expect to pay between $20 and $60
per month for the service.
But how can you select from the more than 60 sys-
tems available today? It is hard to trust ads and com-
mercials, for they are very biased. You might talk
with neighbors or friends who have tried medical
alert systems to get their take.
There are reviews available online at sites such as
http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/search.htm?
query=medical alert or https://bestcompany.com/
medical-alert-systems/. The latter reviews 61 differ-
ent systems and provides their own ratings as well as
ratings and reviews by users.
And the web page http://www.consumerreports.org/
cro/2014/06/what-to-look-for-in-a-medical-alert-
system/index.htm gives you things to look for in con-
sidering medical alert systems.
The bottom line is that while medical alert systems
may offer help and protection for those living alone
or who are subject to medical issues, there are a lot
of scoundrels out there looking to take your buck and
there is a wide range in the level of service provided
among the contenders. Research deeply, and choose
well, and you will be protected. Otherwise you may
not get help in a needed manner when an emergency
arises or you may have unneeded costs for the level
of service.
