Dear Extension Homemaker, Once again you will find this newsletter full of interesting opportunities, news on Homemaker events, and useful information. Take a few minutes to review your newsletter, sign up for classes and then invite someone who is not an Extension Homemaker to join you. As you will read in President Cole’s article on page 5, Kentucky Homemakers have been challenged – “Each One Bring One.” What better way to recruit new members than to involve them in one of the many activities coming up this month. Also, mark your calendar for the annual meeting to be held Tuesday, April 25th at 10:00a.m. The theme will be “Building Bridges.” Additional information and reservation forms will be available in the April newsletter. Cultural Arts exhibits will be accepted Monday, April 24th from 9:00am-noon. Categories are listed on page 4. Please consider stepping up to a leadership role or nominating someone who would be a good candidate. Don’t assume someone else will take care of it. Take ownership in your organization! Your board works hard to provide relevant programs but they also have a good time. You get out of any organization only what you put into it. This year, the county association will be electing a secretary and treasurer. Nomination forms are available at the office or on the website at http://ces.ca.uky.edu/madison. There will also be a few openings for county educational chairs. Nominations are also being accepted for Homemaker of the Year. All nominations are due April 1st.

MADISON COUNTY INTERNATIONAL DINNER

Fantastic! The Madison County International Dinner was a rousing success again this year. I cannot thank our clubs enough for the wonderful food, help with set-up and take-down, and for simply being so friendly with our students. We had a total of 59 students representing 18 countries and 8 international faculty/staff. We were fortunate this year to have Berea College also participate by bringing 5 students with two staff members. The comments from the students were so appreciative. The Homemakers were very well represented with 16 present. Those who brought and served food, were: 31st, Green Thumb, Jefferson Street Friends, Lancaster Pike, Latecomers, Madison CoOp, Pond, Silver Creek, Wallaceton, White Station clubs, and Mailbox members. All the clubs sent great food and the Lancaster Pike Club gave me a large check with which to purchase supplies and additional food. We may have had a few too many desserts but not much food was left. Any leftovers were used the next day by Home Meals Delivery and participants the next evening at the Baptist Student Ministry party for students. Jeff Prosser, the director at the Baptist Student Ministry was in attendance along with his family and we thanked him for allowing us to use the facility each year. Dr. Michael Benson, the EKU president, arrived a little later as he had been in Ohio for the day. He addressed all of the international students and said that he spent seven of his first 30 years in countries other than the U.S. and this had a great influence on his life and attitude toward others. We were very happy he was able to attend.

Gardeners of Madison County March 20, 6:30-8:30pm: Our speaker will be Judy Isaacs, a creative whirlwind, who will be leading a session on making seed bombs and how to distribute them. Nifty Needlers Nifty Needlers meet every Monday at 5:30 pm. Guests and would-be members are always welcome. Meetings are held at the Richmond Branch of the Madison County Library.

A Crochet Gathering Tuesdays, 3:30-5:30pm: Every Tuesday afternoon, meet at Four Sisters Soap & Tea Emporium, 106 S. Third Street, in Richmond, from 3:30-5:30 p.m., to learn to crochet (also, knitting and tatting available), share tips and patterns, visit and have refreshments. Come join the fun! Paper Kutz Card Club March 16, 6-8pm (Room B): Paper Kutz meets the third Thursday of each month at the Extension office. Guests are always welcome. If you are interested in coming to a meeting please call Clarenetta Watters, president, 575-4072, to sign up so enough supplies will be available.

Sew Much or Sew Little Sew Much or Sew Little meets most every Tuesday morning 9:00-12:00 noon (Room 3). Please bring works in progress, or anything you need help with, whether it’s sewing, piecing, fitting, serging, knitting or crocheting, someone will be happy to help you. NOTE: No meeting on March 28.

Monday Night Sewing Salon Mondays, 5:00 - 8:00 pm (Room 3) DENIM DO-OVERS: We will be working on repurposing denim jeans. Some of the items will include: baby bibs, aprons - for kitchen and heavy duty, cardigans, skirts (from any pants), storage and organizational bags, tote bags, placemats perfect for

Specialty Club Notes picnics, and other items too numerous to mention. Join the Salon projects (backpacks for Liberty Place, etc.) or bring your own for help or inspiration. Have needle, will sew! NOTE: No meeting on March 6th.

Happy Hands Quilt Club Happy Hands quilt club meets every Thursday from 10-2pm. Bring your works in progress and please join us. NOTE: No meeting on March 23rd.

March 16: Block of the Month Quilt (border block) taught on the third Thursday of each month by Cheryl Whitt and meets in Rooms 1 &2. Meetings on April 6th, 13th and possibly 27th—Room 2 and Project Room only, but check the wallboards for exact location.

Free Blood Pressure Check

Thursday, March 9th, 9:30-10:15. Madison County Health Department will again be checking blood pressure the second Thursday of each month from 9:30-10:15 at the extension center. You do not need an appointment.

ATTENTION PATRONS: During April and May we are scheduled to undergo HVAC work throughout the old building which will especially affect meetings in the Conference Room and Room B. Meetings that normally meet there will be rescheduled to the annex building, and some may have to be cancelled. Some meetings normally held in the Annex building may also be moved. Please be sure to check the wall boards for the location of your meeting. If you have any questions, call the office to find out where your class has been moved to, 623-4072. CULTURAL ARTS CLASSES—NEEDLEWORK!

Needlepoint and/or Cross Stitch March 22, 9-11am and 1-3pm

(two sessions) (Snow date April 5)

Beginning Macrame and/or Crewel

Wed., April 12, 9-11am and 1-3pm (two Sessions)

Each class is $5 per session. Come to one or stay for both. Class limited to 10-15 people. You must call to register so that we can be sure to have enough spaces and supplies 623-4072. There are two separate sessions for each class, each class is $5. For the Needlepoint/Cross-stitch you will need 5-6” embroidery hoop; for Crewel bring 8” or larger hoop. The $5 covers all other supplies. A light lunch will be served, or bring your own lunch if you want to stay for both sessions. FALL CRAFT FESTIVAL Madison County will again have the privilege of hosting the Bluegrass Area Craft Festival again this year, November 10-11. As hosts we are also responsible for offering some classes. If you have an interesting skill or craft that you would like to share please call the office or check our website https://madison.ca.uky.edu for a copy of the class information sheet. The completed sheet and a sample of your craft should be submitted to the office by Monday, March 13th. The selection meeting will be held on Tuesday, March 14th @ 1:00pm, Room B. WOOD BURNING WORKSHOP Tuesday, March 14th,6-8pm

Participants will make a bread board.

Skill Level: Beginner/Intermediate.

CRICUT AND DESIGN SPACE BASICS Tuesday, April 4th, 6-8pm (Room 3)

Cricut and Design Space Basics is a beginner's class to help you become more comfortable with your Cricut Explore Machine and the Cricut Design Space software. We will cover:

Machine set up and overview

Design Space basics including inserting and finding images, sizing images, using text, saving projects, linking already owned cartridges, etc.

Basic tools and materials

Cricut Library Subscription options

Q and A

MAKING TIME FOR YOURSELF

Monday, March 13; 1:00 and 6:30* pm

In today’s busy world, you juggle multiple priorities and responsibilities. You make time for others before making time for yourself. Taking time for yourself is to take care of you, which makes you a better family member, friend, co-worker, caregiver, or leader. If it is just 10 minutes a day, a time out is good for your mind, body, and soul. This lesson will be taught by Benita Peoples, Harrison County FCS Agent, on Monday, March 13th at 1:00 and 6:30* pm. Preregister at 623-4072. *Note, the evening program will only be held for a minimum of six attendees.

Looking Back: Spring is a season of the year that we look forward to. We have had a mild winter with very little snow. During warm or cold weather, it is always good to keep moving and participate in activities that we enjoy. Like most months March weather lore has many old sayings to guide us. “When March comes in like a lion it goes out like a lamb, as it rains in March so it rains in June, March winds and April showers bring forth May flowers.” Future Outlook: We have a growing membership and our recruitment efforts continue. Madison County has met the challenge for the 3 for 3 State Membership Contest, and now we face a new challenge, “Each One Bring One.” We participate in this by each homemaker recruiting a new member. Give a membership to a family member or friend as a gift on different occasions to become a homemaker by mailbox or club membership. Invite someone to attend your club meeting to become acquainted with homemakers. The Board is working on some exciting plans for our annual meeting in April. Grains provide energy, vitamins, fiber and small amounts of iron and protein.

Most grain products are low in fat and calories. Grains can be low cost and help stretch your food

budget.

If you thought there was nothing special about the potato, think again! Did you know potatoes come in a wide range of colors, even blue? Come learn more about how to prepare this versatile vegetable and about its nutritional value. We will sample at least one potato dish and share several potato recipes. Parents Place

Grandparents As Parents (GAP) – March 1: The GAP meeting will be held in Room 1 (Annex building). Our meeting time has changed from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm, but remains the first Wednesday of every month. Newcomers are welcome to join us. We will begin our the meeting with our potluck fellowship and then we will discuss our Keys to Great Parenting segment: Foundations. Children do not attend meetings. Keys to Great Parenting will be starting a new 10 week session at the end of April. If you might be interested in the class, signups are now being taken. Children do not attend classes. Single parents, grandparents, expecting parents and foster parents are also welcome. Keys to Great Parenting is a University of Kentucky research based program and FREE! Small Friends – March 8 is for little ones from prenatal to 4 years of age and for the ones who love them. Parents, grandparents, relatives, caregivers, foster parents are welcome as well. Our monthly meeting day has been changed to the second Wednesday of each month from 10:30 to 11:30 am. On March 8 we will have a Keys to Great Parenting tip: Foundations, along with a simple craft, and a healthy snack, as we make new friends.

Tickets will go on sale soon. This event, which includes international food, a talent show, and an international fashion show, is wonderful experience. I hope you will find time to attend. Incidentally, the students and faculty from the following 18 counties were in attendance: Bolivia, China, Congo, France, Great Britain, India, Iran, Japan, Macedonia, Pakistan, Paraguay, Phillipines, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, South Sudan, Spain, USA, and Zambia. Thank you all so very much for you support and kindness to our out-of-country friends.
