LOUIS IMSANDE’S SPIRITUAL JOURNEY My earliest memories were of a strong sense of "home," within the framework of a cycle of continually moving. My father was a professor of genetics who loved research and growing in his field. We university hopped from Durham, NC (Duke University), to Berkeley, CA, to Princeton, NJ, to Cleveland, OH (Case Western Reserve), to Edinburgh, to Ames, lA (Iowa State University). I learned at a young age to quickly build new relationships, to not be crushed when they went away, and that family could and would always be my rock amidst a changing world. Throughout our travels, my family assuredly would find a new church home within our new community. I grew up in the church and have a hard time remembering a time without church, choir, Sunday school, retreats and youth group. I was very comfortable intellectually knowing that a very distant God unequivocally loved me. At fifteen years of age, and without any warning, my father divorced my mother and quickly remarried. I re-member threatening and yelling at God. My newly-developing intimacy with God deepened during a summer camp in Green Lake, Wisconsin. During that summer God opened my eyes to see that I had merely been a very moral church kid, living apart from my Heavenly Father. I fondly remember wholeheartedly pledging to live with and follow Jesus as my Lord and Savior. My life changed that day, and over the rollercoaster of the years that have flown by, Christ has rained mercy and grace upon my life, as He lovingly still guides me today. During my engineering career in Florida, I volunteered as Covenant Presbyterian's Youth Director and as a Senior Leader in Young Life. During these years God was at work in my heart and in my vocational calling. I thoroughly enjoyed engineering, and battled the call God was placing on my life. I reasoned that I had the perfect life as an engineer by day, student minister by night, and enough money to fund both ministries. It seems like yesterday that I realized I no longer received great joy from helping place satellites into orbit, but that my joy came from loving God and allowing Him to use me in shaping the eternal lives of His children. Satellites eventually burn or-bit and disappear without a lasting effect, but partnering with God in ministry could change eternity for a stu-dent. I soon left engineering behind and responded to God's call to ministry, by moving to Myrtle Beach to be-come FPC's Youth Director and to start Young Life on the Grand Strand. As God guided my ministry to Peachtree Presbyterian Church, Columbia Seminary, Roswell Presbyterian Church, and FPC Johnson City, He shaped my life, my ministry, my calling, and my relationships. Next to my relationship with God, I celebrate the day God united my heart with Deborah Lee. We continue to grow in love and have been blessed with two amazing young men, Jacob (16) and Luke (14). Their current paths to maturity in Christ have been an incredible journey. Luke was diagnosed on the Autism Spectrum at eighteen months of age, and our family has never been the same. God uses Luke to penetrate our hearts with his passion for life and love. While Luke shines brightly, God uses our family's relationship with Luke to hone us to look more and more like Christ. We are truly on a journey that Iwould not trade for the world. God continues to lovingly guide my family and me. He moves within our hearts and amongst our interac-tions. We have been faithful and will continue to be faithful to follow where and when He leads. My family is far from perfect and that is okay, because it makes us perfect recipients for God's amazing grace. Amen.

Louis Imsande PIPC Pastor

The Hapeshis Family is PIPC’s Family of the Month for March. Chris, Maggie, Addy, and Ava have been church members for about 5 years. They visited when Addy, who is now 10 years old, was very little but when she was old enough to attend JAM with Ms. Julia, they began attending regularly and joined the church shortly after. They are so glad to have found their church home at PIPC. As a family, they love going to the beach and bike rides together. If they are not on the beach, you can find them on a soccer field somewhere. Addy, age 10, loves anything related to art and design. She also plays soccer and cheers for the Gamecocks. Ava, age 7, loves playing soccer, reading, and playing on her Kindle. Ava is a Clem-son Tiger fan. Maggie works at Sampit Elementary as the Curriculum Coach. She loves reading good books on the beach. She is also a certified group fitness instructor and teaches RPM (indoor cycling) at the Georgetown YMCA. At church, she serves on the Christian Education Team, helps with Chil-dren’s Church, Children’s Sunday School, JAM, and coordinates the Acolytes for Sunday worship services. Maggie is a Clemson grad and loves the Tigers. Chris works at Georgetown High School as a Social Studies teacher. He is the Boys Cross Country Coach and Boys Varsity Soccer Coach. He loves working outdoors. He is a USC grad and loves to cheer on the Gamecocks.

College football season is very loud and interesting at the Hapeshis house. They are a true House Divided!

“Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old, he will not depart from it.”

SOUPER BOWL SUNDAY: February was a whirlwind of a month. It started with our Super Bowl party. Thank you to Leigh and Scott Eddy for opening their home to us. Thank you for your support for our Souper Bowl collection. We collected $2,166.00 for the Bread of Life kitchen. SCHOLARSHIP AUCTION/DINNER: Thirteen youth graciously volunteered their time as they served as the wait staff for the Scholarship Supper. We were so proud to see our seniors recog-nized and hear of all of their accomplishments and hard work. Our “waiters and waitresses” are now ready to work for any of our local restaurants. SOUP AND SANDWICH FUNDRAISER: We are continuing to serve and raise money to help fund our mission trips and special activities. On March 4th we will host our 6th annual Soup and Sand-wich fund raiser. Please join us in the Holsclaw Fellowship Center for a lunch of homemade soups, sandwiches and desserts. Tickets can be purchased from any youth or youth leader. Upcoming Dates:

March 18th-Movie night “I CAN ONLY IMAGINE.” $100 non-refundable deposit due for THE GREAT ESCAPE March 25th-Pass out palm crosses for morning worship SALT Youth/JAM Easter Egg Hunt

SALKEHATCHIE: Salkehatchie dates have been released. We attend Rivertown (Conway) Salkehatchie. The dates are June 9-16th. Participants must be at least 14 years old. There is a $230 fee to attend. Please let me know if you’re interested in attending. GREAT ESCAPE: Our middle school (grades 6-8) youth have expressed interest in attending The Great Escape: Southwind 1. The conference is sponsored by Young Life (the same group that sponsors Fun in the Son). The conference will be July 24-28 in Ocklawaha, FL . The total cost will be $525. There will be a $100 non-refundable deposit due by March 18th. If your youth has paid a de-posit previously and was unable to attend that event, you may apply these monies to this trip. Howev-er, using participation points, your youth could go for as little $300. (This will truly depend on the funds we are able to raise with the Soup and Sandwich fundraiser.) Please let me know ASAP if you are interested. Andria Eddy, SALT Youth Director

Have you noticed a few new smiling faces in the choir loft? In the past few months we have been so happy to welcome new sopranos Anna Simon and Mary Catherine Horton, alto Carol Parlette, and bass Chuck Parlette. Chancel Choir is always looking for new members. No one can be there every week, nor is it expected. I do ask that you attend every rehears-al and worship as you can. Being in the choir pro-vides an opportunity to be an active worship leader, for great fellowship, and to be a part of a group. There is NO audition to be in the choir. Just let me or a choir member know if you want to come try rehearsals for a month and see if you like it. If you join now, you are in time for Easter!

MARCH MUSIC Our wonderful Handbell Choir will be headed to Charleston for the Palmetto Bronze festival on March 2nd & 3rd. March 4th / Lent 3 - Gail Holsclaw will be playing a flute solo, “Lamb of God.” The Chancel Choir has a stirring ar-rangement, “The Old Rugged Cross” by Vicki Wright. March 11th/ Lent 4 - DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME BEGINS *SPRING forward one hour! Winds of Praise Recorder Consort will provide instrumental music. Chancel Choir will be singing “God So Loved the World” from John Stainer’s Crucifixion, a setting of John 3:16. March 18th / Lent 5 - WELCOME PASTOR LOUIS! Leigh Eddy will be providing special oboe music, “The Church’s One Foundation” and “Gabriel’s Oboe.” Chancel Choir is singing the powerful “Face the Cross” with soloist Daphne Trent. March 25th / Palm Sunday - The children of the church are invited to proceed with palms during the first hymn. The Alleluia Ringers will be playing “Hosanna, Loud Hosanna” and “Thee We Adore, O Hidden Savior.” Chancel Choir will sing “On That Day When He Rode Into Jerusalem,” that alternates between the joy and celebra-tion of Palm Sunday with the passion of the Holy Week to follow. March 29th / Maundy Thursday Service at 7:00pm in the Holsclaw Fellowship Center with a powerful drama, beautiful music, and Communion taken around tables.

CARNEGIE HALL - On April 12th, a group of ten representing PIPC will travel to NYC to be a part of the NY de-but of Jubilate Deo by composer Dan Forrest. Mr. Forrest teaches composition at Bob Jones University in Green-ville, SC. Singers Daphne Trent and Maryann Williamson will be singing soprano and Leigh Eddy, Anne Floyd, and Lana Pollard will be singing alto with some 200 other singers and a full orchestra. We started two hour rehearsals weekly for altos and for sopranos in January to learn our music. I must admit that when I began to learn the music I was overwhelmed and wondered what I had gotten us into! We continued and the process of learning the music has turned out to be a wonderful journey already. Jubilate Deo is a musical setting of Psalm 100, “Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all ye lands.” The first five songs are set in Latin, Hebrew & Arabic, Mandarin, Zulu, and Spanish, each representing different cultures and times. Six is called “The Song of the Earth” and uses the choir as the earth rejoicing. Seven represents Psalm 100: 1-2: Sing for joy, dance in gladness, shout for joy, all the earth! The last song is an amazing mix of the first six representing all places and peoples praising God. It is amazing. I have marveled at how one person could create all these parts. Our actual trip is still a few weeks away, but we have already been challenged and blessed. More next month…

As you come to Sunday worship services, attend Sunday school, serve, or participate in the many ongoing social, community and spiritual events here at Pawleys Island Presbyterian Church, keep in mind that the Building & Grounds (B&G) Team of volunteers is charged with ensuring the ongoing operation, security, and upkeep of the church including the maintenance and repair of our buildings and outdoor grounds at PIPC. These include the Sanctuary, the Holsclaw Fellowship Center, Admin/Education, Founders Hall, and several miscellaneous smaller storage buildings. Outside of these buildings we have driveways, parking areas, sidewalks, landscape and garden areas, a playground, and a variety of other spaces covering five acres. The B&G Team accomplishes much of the ongoing operation and maintenance through the engagement, oversight, and administration of different service and maintenance agreements, engaging specialty con-tractors or subcontractors when a need arises, and through team members tackling some of the smaller handyman/ improvement projects that come up through the year on a volunteer basis. The B&G Team meets monthly in the Library at 5:30 PM on the second Monday of the month, and we are always looking for more members and friends who are willing to share some of their time and talents to help out. You may not know, that when you come to Church for Sunday worship services and attend Sunday School, an individual has arrived early to open all the buildings, turn on sound systems and lights, and in-sure everything is working smoothly. You will find coffee has been made and if necessary this individual will serve as back-up for Ushers or Communion Servers. This person will also lock up and turn off all the systems and lights after everyone has left. This individual is one of 11 volunteers of the Open/Closing Team led by Dan Stuckey. Other team members are: Andrew Warren, Charles Biddix, Web Richardson, Scott Eddy, Gene Gilfillin, Renee Middleton, Tommy Kennedy, Kevin Branham, Todd Middleton, and Ra-gan Ormand. If you have an interest in helping out, either through regular participation on the Building & Grounds team or through occasional special projects, or on the Open/Closer team please contact Ragan Ormand (Chair) at “[email protected], 843-318-9051 or any team member listed below: Gene Gilfillin (Co-Chair) at [email protected], 843-235-0548 Charles Biddix (Secretary) at [email protected], 843-235-9878 Ken Leach at [email protected], 843-237-3333 Tim Pollard at [email protected], 904-662-6346 Theo Krapels at [email protected] 843-314-3796 Adam Powley at [email protected] 843-655-5267 Dan Stuckey Open/Closer Lead at [email protected] 843-235-9454

Church Wide Cleanup

Clean-Up Day 2018 Easter comes early this year so our annual Church Clean-up Day is scheduled for Saturday morning, March 24th, from 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM, followed by lunch. We will plan on tackling our usual list of inside and outside jobs (weather permitting), cleaning and sprucing up the Sanctuary, Education Building, Holsclaw Fellowship Center and the general grounds. In case of bad weather we will focus on inside areas only. This gives us time to have the church really sparkling for Easter services the following week. Watch for more information in the bulletins in-cluding a list of planned tasks and sign-up sheets. Please plan on helping out for a few hours and enjoying a good lunch on March 24th!

WE NEED YOUR HELP!!! We’re having a Church Clean-Up Day on Saturday, March 24th, from 9:30 A.M. until 12:30 P.M. We will need people to work inside and outside all of the buildings as well as on the grounds. If you would be willing to help, please complete the bottom of this insert and return it to the church office or put it in the offering plate. This is one small way that you can give back to PIPC and God. Lunch will be provided for everyone that helps beautify PIPC!

Among the Library’s resources for this season of Lent, Holy Week, and Easter are: For Adults: Final Words from the Cross by Adam Hamilton The stories of those who stood near the cross are expressed as 1st-person viewpoints. An uplifting postscript,

“The Words After That,” gives the words Jesus spoke after His resurrection. Experiencing the Passion of Jesus by Lee Strobel and Gary Poole This discussion guide was prompted by the Mel Gibson film “The Passion of the Christ” and explores the “who,

what, and why” of Christ’s death and resurrection. Cries from the Cross: A Journey Into the Heart of Jesus by Erwin W. Lutzer Using the words of Jesus on the cross, Lutzer explores His final act of selfless suffering starting with the chapter

“A Cry for Pardon,” and continuing with “A Cry of – Assurance, Compassion, Anguish, Suffering, Victory, and Submission.”

Experiencing the Resurrection: The Everyday Encounter That Changes Your Life by Henry and Melvin

Blackaby The authors of Experiencing God (the church-wide study PIPC did a few years ago) state that the reason for this

book is for readers to do more than gain knowledge of the resurrection but to experience it in their daily walk with the risen Christ.

The Power of the Cross: Putting It to Work in Your Life by Tony Evans Evans comments that at Easter we typically focus on the cross of Christ, but afterward we go back to doing our

own thing, trying to live our lives without the cross as the central focus. As the former chaplain of the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys, it is fitting that he uses the analogy that doing that is like the NFL deciding to have a foot-ball available only for the Super Bowl!

For Children: Why Is There a Cross by Kathleen Long Bostrom Little Colt’s Palm Sunday by Michelle Medlock Adams The Legend of the Easter Egg by Lori Walburg The Very First Easter by Paul L. Maier
