Dear Friends, My children appear to have inherited very little from me (apart from my dashing good looks of course). Hours of dragging them to football matches and trying to explain the offside rule and why the league tables are misleading and that Birmingham City really is the greatest football team in the world have availed nothing. Three sons, two of whom have no interest in sport whatsoever (unless you count video gaming – and I don’t!) and a third who is passionate about rugby, which he has derived from mates at work rather than me. In the same way, despite running three times a week for most of the last 25 years and a veteran of more than a dozen marathons, they all regard a walk to the post box as a waste of good shoe leather. More: there is nothing more guaranteed to ensure they don’t watch a television programme than my recommending it (actually there is something even more guaranteed and that’s their mum recommending it). And their liking for Death Metal and Drum n Bass (you don’t need to know) doesn’t come from any gene that I could have possibly passed on. But at last, there is something. In the last 18 months, middle son has discovered reading. I’m sure his teachers might have hoped that he had made this discovery a little earlier in his educational career. But better late than never I say. And the weird thing is: he’s worse than I am. I currently have 47 books waiting to be read (that’s about two year’s worth). I will read them however long it takes me, but I accept that’s quite a lot compared to my wife who only buys a book after finishing the last one. I just can’t help myself. The vast majority are bought in charity shops, so when I see a book I like the look of and it’s only £1.50 I just can’t resist even though I know it will be a very long time before I get round to reading it (I always read them in exactly the order I bought them because that’s the sort of person I am). However, my son’s addiction is worse than mine. Until he moved out recently, barely a day would go by without a book arriving courtesy of Mr Amazon through the post. As a result, he has an even larger pile of books waiting to be read, but because he is a different personality type (something else he hasn’t inherited from me) half of them at least, he will never get round to reading.

The best books ever written I hear you ask? For me, it’s between Mansfield Park by Jane Austen or Crime and Punishment by Dostoyevsky or if you prefer something more contemporary it would have to be The Poisonwood Bible, which despite it’s title is not a religious book. Whether any of these appeals to you will depend on your own personal preference. However, I am reminded that there is one book that all should read: the Bible (which is not really a book but a library of poetry, history, biography and prophecy). In the same way that no one should get behind the wheel of a car without first reading the highway code (see last month’s Link), you should not venture out on the journey of life without reading this inspired manual. Why not read St Mark’s Gospel, chapters 14-16 for Lent? Greg. Allesley Green News There will be a quiz night jointly organised by St Andrews and Allesley Green Residents Association on Friday March 2nd at 7pm at Massey Ferguson Social Club. Tickets are available from Julie at [email protected] or on 07756 918847. A small group meet on the fourth Tuesday of each month to pray for the estate. If you would like to join us, please contact [email protected] Party in the Park takes place from 1-5pm on Monday May 7th with live entertainment, stalls and games for all the family. Eastern Green Community Group On Thursday 25th January, the Eastern Green Community Group was formally constituted. The group is open to anyone who lives in the Eastern Green area. Dave Adey ([email protected]) was elected as Chair and Richard Barnes ([email protected]) as Secretary. Other committee members are Debbie Barnes, Greg Smith, Paul McGerrigan. The group would be pleased to hear from anyone who might be willing to act as Treasurer. The focus of the group’s activities includes attempting to influence the development to the north of Eastern Green to ensure it best serves the needs of the whole community;

Eastern Green History Group AGM followed by Larry Watson’s talk. After a review of the Group’s activities and finances in 2017, members enjoyed a fascinating presentation by Larry Watson ‘The 60s Coventry and Me’. Larry was brought up in Stoke Heath and worked for the City Council for about 34 years, most of his time as an electrician. He talked of memorable jobs such as clearing out Matersons in preparation for refurbishing and turning it into the Museum Of British Transport. Other jobs he mentioned were Whitefriars Monastery and the Coventry Telegraph. He developed an early interest in the pop music of the 60s and was a regular customer of Jill Hanson’s in Market Way and the record stalls in the market. He particularly liked Radio Luxembourg and other pirate radio stations such as Radio Caroline. Later, he achieved an ambition and visited the west coast of America. Fortuitously he met two stars out there, one of whom was Clint Eastwood in Carmel. During his talk he played a number of his records and CD’s and asked us to identify the singers! Larry was very entertaining and to his credit is able to give support to Myton Hospice as an outcome.

Future meetings

Monday 19th March at 7.30pm, Rene Whitlock, 'Coventry War Memorial, the Friends and the work they do'

Please note this change of date: Monday 23rd April meeting at 3.30pm at London Road Cemetery with Ian Woolley (previously

announced as 26th February). Contact Jenny 02476 403372 if you would like to join us.

Kidz Praise Kidz Praise is a fun and friendly service for primary school age children and their families which runs every 1st and 3rd Thursday all year round. Doors open at 3.15pm with the service starting at 4pm. Come and enjoy an after school snack of toast and juice before the service with a well-deserved tea or coffee for parents! Each service has a different theme to focus on with an exciting craft or activity set up to enjoy! Themes we have enjoyed so far are In the Beginning where we used felt tips, glitter glue, animal and flower stickers to create a collage of the wonderful world God created, The Tall Tower which involved building towers with spaghetti and marshmallows, The Bad Brother and we decorated biscuits to look like brothers using icing pens and sweets. This is a great way to explore the themes of the Bible whilst having lots of fun! For the service we come together at the front of the church in a relaxed and informal group. During this time we have a Bible story which is always brought to life with various props or games and engages the children. To worship God we sing a variety of songs with actions that are accompanied by either a guitarist or CD player. Prayer time is a time to reflect and to offer our prayers up to God. If anyone ever has something they wish to pray for then this is a perfect time or if you wish to pray privately then our very own St Andrew's Prayer Bear will be at the service for the children to cuddle and to talk to. We like to create a fun and interesting service with the teachings of God at the heart of it. Kidz Praise is such an enjoyable service and a great way to spend time together after school exploring your faith. It will be great to see you there soon, Emma Wildman, St Andrew's Children and Families’ Worker

EASTERN GREEN W.I. After the usual formalities we moved on to our speaker for the evening, Louise Tranter, for her Introduction to Tai Chi. Louise talked to us explaining about the Principles of Tai Chi and its different origins and styles. With the help of her colleague, they demonstrated some of the moves and then invited us to join in with them. We all managed to have a go and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves; I think some of us may look at joining one of the sessions they run. The next W.I. meeting on March 7th will be with Mary Aldenton and the Ukuholics; and yes I have spelt that correctly! So come and join in the fun. The meeting will be held in Eastern Green Village Hall, Church Lane, off Hockley Lane. Please arrive at 7.15pm ready for a 7.30pm start. New members are always welcome at the W.I. so come along and join this friendly group of ladies. Fiona Bird, 02476695811 Eastern Green Golden Years At our meeting in February we discussed possible dates for days out and lunches throughout the year and the Golden years summer holiday. At the moment we think this might take place in September but nothing has been confirmed yet so watch this space! Doug, who joins us with his wife from Canada for a few months each year, celebrated his Birthday with us and we sang a rousing rendition of ‘Happy Birthday’ to him, June H and Ursula followed by our usual cup of tea and cake. I’m delighted to report that, following her visit to us last month, Barbara has decided to join us, we hope that she enjoys her time with us. Our sale of unwanted Christmas gifts will take place on 1st March and the money raised will go towards club funds. On 15th March Dorothy Clarke will give a Pam Ayres type talk. If you would like any further information please telephone Sandy on 02475018576, Sandra Watts.
