Last fall at our ABC Nebraska pastors' retreat, the region in-troduced us to a movement called Fresh Expressions. It is a way of reaching out to the neighborhood around us without compromis-ing who we are as a church. Here is some information about the Fresh Expressions movement:

Our world is rapidly changing. It needs a church, rooted in scripture, orthodoxy and tradition; but fluent in the language and culture of the world today. Around the world, Christians are stepping out in faith and beginning fresh expressions of church, new or different forms of church for a changing culture. A Fresh Expression is a form of church for our changing culture, established primarily for the benefit of those who are not yet part of any church.

What sets Fresh Expressions apart is a focus on forming faith communities es-pecially for those who have never been involved in church (un-churched) or who have left the church (de-churched). But this doesn’t mean giving up on the established church. There is a great inheritance in the established church that can and must be passed along to future generations. We believe the key to doing this is by partnering with pioneering leaders, dynamic pastors and existing churches, denominational streams, and agencies who are committed to make disciples who make disciples, rais-ing up leaders with a passion to join with God in the mission edges where new forms of church can flourish.

Each fresh expression of church is unique, and designed for their particular context. They can be rural or suburban, in public spaces, housing projects and college dormitories. Some are aimed at specific groups, ranging from “Messy Church” for families with children to “Amore Groups” led by married couples. There is biker church, cowboy church, church for artists, church at or after work; the sky’s the limit. Each is an adventure in bringing the power of the Gospel to people who might never experience Christian community and the transformational and self-giving love of Je-sus.

Four guiding principles tie fresh expressions together. Each one is:

Missional – Joining God’s mission by going to those not currently served by any church

Contextual – Grounded in the language and culture of the people in and for their par-ticular context

Formational – Focused on discipling people in the way of Jesus

Ecclesial – Forming local, tangible Christian communities that are able to step out as church in their own right

What do you see God calling the church in America to?

For we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heav-ens.

For in this tent we groan, longing to be clothed with our heavenly dwelling— if indeed, when we have taken it off we will not be found naked.

For while we are still in this tent, we groan under our burden, because we wish not to be unclothed but to be further clothed, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life.

He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who has given us the Spirit as a guarantee.

2 Corinthians 5:6-10

So we are always confi-dent; even though we know that while we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord— for we walk by faith, not by sight.

Yes, we do have confi-dence, and we would ra-ther be away from the body and at home with the Lord.

So whether we are at home or away, we make it our aim to please him.

For all of us must appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each may receive recompense for what has been done in the body, whether good or evil.

SLT MINUTES FEBRUARY 2019 SLT Meeting Minutes, February 5, 2019

Jon Mayo opened the meeting. Mike presented devotions from Galatians 5 about living by the Fruits of

the Spirit. Minutes of the January SLT meeting were approved by unanimous consent.

Ron Fenton attended the SLT meeting to advise the SLT on building and property issues. He reported

that heaters in several rooms are not working and will need to be fixed. Also, there is a roof leak around

the air conditioners that we will fix in the spring. Another big problem is that people are putting the ther-

mostats on “hold” and not taking them off, and so a number of rooms are being heated for excessively

long periods of time. Ron will schedule a church work day in April so that we can clean up and declutter

the church. Lastly, Ron indicated that we are discussing a package of phone, voice mail, and internet ser-

vices with Cox, to save money and provide better capabilities at church.

The financial report showed that for January, the church had a $3,500 deficit, as contributions were

about $6,800 below budget. Bad winter weather led to reduced church attendance and lower contribu-

tions, it is assumed.

Pastor Scott will be involved in several Region events in February. He will be leading sessions in both the

Leaders in Training (LIT) and LIT+ workshops February 8-9. In addition, he is organizing and leading the

Youth Spring Retreat Weekend March 15-17.

For the Thursday morning coffee time, Pastor Scott indicated that he is having focused discussions on

spiritual topics and our shared history as a church in an attempt to steer the conversations in a more

positive direction. Pastor Scott will be on vacation from February 19-24.

The church is in need of one or more backup drivers for the transportation of kids on Sunday mornings

and Wednesday nights. There is no age requirement, and a background check will be completed. Pastor

Scott will announce the need at church.

Pastor John attended the Fresh Expressions Vision Day, to help leaders learn to attract those who might

want to be involved but are not interested in traditional church. The SLT will discuss this more at the

Leadership Retreat March 1-2.

Sam Stevens will be coming on as our Worship Intern, under Pastor’s John’s direction. His responsibilities

will gradually increase as he gains experience in worship and in working with the Praise Team. Other

Praise Team members will be involved in planning worship as well.

Pastor John will be involved in a discipleship cohort February 11-13, and a Baptist religious liberty confer-

ence in March. He will be taking some vacation in March as well.

The SLT continued the discussion of the church’s essential ministries and possible governance structures.

The focus was on how the SLT involves others in leading the church by helping members move into doing

ministry. The goal of the SLT is to enable the ministries and leaders to accomplish their missions. The

SLT reviewed Jon Mayo’s outline of thoughts on relational leadership from the January meeting, and how

it could impact ministry and organization at BBC. The SLT will review changes that will be needed to the

by-laws and how recommendations will be presented to the congregation.

Holly Mayo will be leaving the Disbursing Treasurer position at the end of March. A notice will be included

in the church bulletin that we are looking for someone interested in the position.

Prayer concerns: Leaders in Training weekend, Disbursing Treasurer position, van drivers.

Next SLT Meeting: Friday March 1 during the Leadership Retreat.

Ernie Denniston, Secretary

BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS & SERVING CHRIST 2 Corinthians

5:17-19

So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new!

All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation; that is, in Christ God was reconcil-ing the world to himself, not counting their tres-passes against them, and entrusting the message of reconciliation to us.

2 Corinthians

5:20-21

So we are ambassadors for Christ, since God is making his appeal through us; we entreat you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.

For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the right-eousness of God.
