In the fifth century, after four centuries of Roman occupation and leadership, the Romans up and left Britain, leaving the nation vulnerable to an invading Anglo-Saxon horde. Since only fragmented historical texts give insight into this period, what really
happened? Is the legend of King Arthur more than folklore? Was he in fact ruler of a prosperous and sophisticated trading village, and the heroic defender of the native Britons against the invading Anglo-Saxons? Join Secrets of the Dead and Professor Alice Roberts on a mission to decode the myths and piece together Britain’s history.

Emerging VoicesCourageous women who risk their lives for peace. The artistry and activism of singers Joni Mitchell and
Holly Near. Tune in to WLIW21 for compelling stories of women who are making their voices heard and changing history as we celebrate Women’s History Month.
Women, War & Peace II (pbs.org/womenwarandpeace), the second edition of the acclaimed documentary series, presents four new female-directed films exploring the pivotal role women are playing in dramatic conflicts and peace settlements across the globe.
Catholic and Protestant women come together in the wake of Northern Ireland’s bloody civil war in Wave Goodbye to Dinosaurs (Wednesday, March 27 at 9pm).
The Trials of Spring (Wednesday, March 27 at 10pm) follows three Egyptian women as they put their lives and bodies on the line fighting for justice and freedom during the Arab Spring protests of 2011.
Naila and the Uprising (Wednesday, April 3 at 9pm) tells the deeply personal story of a courageous, non-violent women’s movement that formed the heart of the Palestinian struggle for freedom in 1987.
An all-female Bangladeshi police unit embarks on a risky UN peacekeeping mission into earthquake-ravaged Haiti in A Journey of a Thousand Miles: Peacekeepers (Wednesday, April 3 at 10pm).
Great Performances strikes a festive note with Joni 75: A Birthday Celebration (Sunday, March 24 at 7:30pm), a star-studded 75th birthday salute to legendary singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell filmed at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles in November 2018. James Taylor, Graham Nash, Chaka Khan, Diana Krall, Norah Jones, Emmylou Harris, Seal, Rufus Wainwright, and others perform songs from Mitchell’s iconic career. For the last 40 years, feminist singer and activist Holly Near has worked on global social justice coalition-building in the women’s and lesbian movements. Experience her remarkable journey and the power of song in the fight for equality in the American Masters film Holly Near: Singing for Our Lives (Wednesday, March 6 at 9pm).
