Last week I traveled to Whispering Winds

Catholic Conference Center to spend a day with the Seniors who were on the Kairos retreat. In just five short hours I heard many times over, students express their

fears, doubts and anxiety about what the future holds. Here at Saints we believe strongly that we are working to prepare students for the “real world”. But beyond the classroom our students wrestle with the uncertainty that lies ahead of them. And in these moments, it is

OFF CAMPUS LEARNING. Senior Liam Brucker-Casey spent his month long Intersession internship with the UCSD Department of History. For more on Saints annual internship program go to page 4.

AUGUSTINIAN HERITAGE

As per tradition, on Senior Night varsity Basketball team players and parents/

guardians are introduced to the overflow crowd attending one of the final games of the season. This year, Senior Night was matched against archrival Cathedral Catholic. As the introductions were about to be begin the gym lights dimmed into a dramatic purple hue. One by one upperclassmen and their families walked out on to the court. It was already a special night for Misa Rosado, one of the few seniors on this year’s squad because he was happy to be escorted by local relatives, who have been his San Diego family. Principal James Horne explains “Misa Rosado came to Saints from Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria destroyed his home and school. Having relatives in San Diego and

a keen desire to play basketball Misa set his eyes on Saints. His parents remained in the storm ravaged U.S. Territory to rebuild.” As Misa’s entered Sanders Gym for Senior Night, he caught glimpse of two very familiar persons in his life. To unite the family and to surprise Misa, the school’s Augustinians, the faculty, staff and administrators paid for his parents to fly to San Diego to attend the special Senior Night ceremonies and game. It was the first time, the Rosado’s had seen their son since he left Puerto Rico and it would be the first time they’d see their son compete for Saints. When Misa saw his parents waiting for him, he put his hands over his face and bent over in tears. His family quickly surrounded him.

Laughter and hugs all around. An unbelievable reunion had happened in plain sight. And, not a proverbial dry eye was to be found in the packed gymnasium. Caritas, indeed.

But the night was not over. It was a special Senior Night Another for another Saintsman basketball player. Jared Stearns was injured during the school’s football season and he was unable to compete in his final year in basketball. Although, he didn’t play a minute this season, the Saints Community in attendance for Senior Night, led by the ever vocal “The Pit” student cheering section let him know how much they cared for this young man. Caritas, indeed.

RUBEN’S 3 RBI SANDWICHSaints Alum Ruben Fontes (’17) is on the roster of a very good Davidson College varsity baseball team. He’s a 6-2 Sophomore starting for the North Carolina college, where he has been terrorizing Div. 1 Atlantic 10 Conference pitching. A recent Twitter showcased Ruben lining a home run to right after hitting triple earlier in a 15-3 win over Towson University. That outburst netted 3 RBI for the left-handed slugger, who is the son of Ruben and Anne Fontes of Bonita. At Saints, he excelled in both baseball and basketball. He was team captain and All-Western League in baseball where he was a three-year starter as a catcher and in the outfield. As a Davidson Wildcat he’s been used as a catcher, DH and in a utility role.

ALUMS IN THE NEWS

JUMP INTO HISTORYSaints Alum Tanner Battikha (’16) won the Mountain West Conference long jump event with a personal best of 24.3 feet. Tanner’s mark places him 10th all time in University of New Mexico track and field history. It was the junior's first indoor championship after finishing third in the event the last two years.

WHEN IN ROMEAlum Guillermo Hernandez (’10) is presently in Rome, where he is studying at the Pontifical North American College. The Seminarian from the Diocese of San Diego is pictured with United States Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito. Hernandez attended a lecture late last year by Justice Alito on conscience and religious freedom.

INTERSESSION’S DIVERSITY OF CLASSES, Part 2

4

This edition features more images from 2019’s Intersession internship program. As mentioned last month in Saints Scene the Intersession was developed a decade ago by

Saints administration and faculty. Intersession is a rare phenomenon among U.S. high schools (lay or Catholic). Few if any such programs exist. The creation of the Intersession is one of many crowning administrative achievements at Saints led by The Augustinians; school’s President Edwin Hearn and Principal James Horne. The mini term provides students the opportunity to investigate studies in areas that interest them and by doing so, spark a curiosity and inquisitiveness that naturally stimulates their desire to learn new things. Intersession in 2019 featured a vast array of course offerings that include some old favorites such as: Engineering Design, Robotics, Skills for Life, Marine Biology/SCUBA, Careers in Sports, Acting/Film Production, Introduction to Architecture, Aquatic Sports, and Lifetime Physical Fitness. Plus, new ones like the very popular cooking class, which featured a guest lecture by top TV Chef Marcela Valladolid.

As part of the Intersession Marine Biology class students obtained their Scuba Certification. The Saints began their journey with pool training and eventually had a dive in La Jolla Cove. (L-R ) Nick Rohen, Andrew Goodridge, Griffin Miller, and Christopher Lloyd.

2019 Internship Sites

St. Augustine’s world class Intersession (mid-30-day-term) would not

be possible without the support of individuals, businesses and organizations in Greater San Diego. Such support makes Saints a leader in providing career ideas and hands-on experience to its student body. It’s a program that now offers an internship each year for the entire senior class.

Intersession is also a wonderful linkage between the Saints Community and San Diegans in general. As an example, the Intersession Internship program would not be possible without the individuals, businesses and organizations, who have so generously agreed to adopt a Saintsman intern for an entire month. AROUNDCAMPUS

our school community’s underlying care (Caritas) for each and every student that lifts them up and encourages them to continue on the path. As parents and teachers there is a single statement we can make to students to express our care for them and solidify our relationship with them. This simple statement can change the way students view us and how we see them. That powerful statement is “I believe in you!” When we hear stories about students achieving uncommon results, the power of believing in students is almost always the central force. Our relationships with the boys we educate are of primary importance and they need to be radically aware of our support and encouragement. As the second semester moves into Spring, I encourage you to take the time to re-communicate with your student just how deeply you believe in him.

Yours in the Spirit of Catholic Education,

James HornePrincipal

A CHAMPIONSHIP SEASONSAINTS SAVORS FOUR WINTER SPORT TITLES

By Eric Dent

How sweet it is! As the winter season concludes, the Saints have had an unprecedented run of success in the various sports on campus. The Saints have captured league titles in rugby, soccer, basketball and wrestling.

Let’s take a look at the four teams’ journey to the title.

TEAM RUGBY. SoCal Interscholastic Rugby Federation Champions.

RUGBY CHAMPS. The Saints Rugby team experienced its most successful campaign in club history. The Saints were unbeaten in league play and concluded the regular season campaign with a 7-0 record. The team saw a big victory over St. John Bosco where the Saints reclaimed the Titan Shield and the last game of the season where the Saints beat Cathedral 38-7 in the annual competition for the Charity Cup.

The successful league season earned the Saints a #7 ranking in the national standings. The Saints lost a bitterly contested battle with Bosco in the SoCal final, but will advance to play in the inaugural SoCal vs NorCal competition played at UCLA before the Cal vs UCLA match on March 9. The final rugby competition will pit SoCal’s #2 ranked Saints versus De La Salle (#2 ranked in NorCal) from the Bay Area.

SOCCER CHAMPS. The Saints Rugby team was matched by the soccer team. The Saints soccer team clinched the league title with a 5-2-1 record in league and 11-7-3 overall. The team advanced to the CIF playoffs and earned a hard fought 3-2 extra-time victory over Coronado in the first round of the playoffs. The next game was the San Diego CIF Open Division Semi-Final. The Saints played to 1-1 draw in regular time, but lost out to Pt. Loma in a penalty kick shoot-out. Despite the loss in CIF, the Saints advanced at month end to the State Playoffs, where they lost 2-1 to an always tough San Clemente High team. TEAM SOCCER. Western League Soccer Champions.

Mission of St. Augustine High School – Our mission is to provide a Catholic liberal arts education for young men in an environment that promotes the development of mind, heart and body in the Augustinian tradition. By helping to form loving disciples of Jesus Christ we communicate to the world the gospel values of community, truth and love.

BASKETBALL CHAMPS. Not to be outdone, the basketball team had another amazing season. The team won league again with a 11-1 record, and a 22-7 record overall. The team also played in the Torrey Pines Holiday classic where it took on some of the strongest teams in the nation. The team used these early tests to improve and get sharp for the league season. A loss in the first round of the CIF Open Division Playoffs was a setback, but the Saints rebounded by earning a slot in the 2019 State Playoffs. First playoff game saw the Saints lose 68-57 versus a hugely talented team from LA area’s Etiwanda High School.

WRESTLING CHAMPS. After finishing in second place for the past three years in Eastern League competition, Saints Wrestling in 2019 broke through to win its first league championship since 2006. Prior to that the school won wrestling league crowns in 2002, 1996, 1992, 1984, 1986 and earned its one CIF championship in 1992. Seven seniors paced the 2019 title run, the most upperclassmen on one team ever. “Winning was a nice reward for them after four years of hard work," added Coach Matt Linville.

WRAP-UP. The Saints have not seen a winter sports season with such dynastic dominance in the school’s 97 years. With 2018-19 championships accomplished it will be exciting to see these over achieving underclassmen ladened teams: rugby, soccer, wrestling and basketball teams compete at the highest level—next season.

TEAM WRESTLING. Eastern League Wrestling Champions.

TEAM BASKETBALL. Western League Basketball Champions.
