I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly (John
10:10).
The 23rd Psalm is one of the best known and most beloved passages in all
of scripture. People especially love the imagery of the Lord our Shepherd
leading us in “green pastures” and beside “still waters.” This reminds me
of the refrain from the beloved Gospel hymn, “In the Garden:” And He
talks with me, and He tells me I am His own, and the joy we share as we
tarry there none other has ever known.” But, I believe the reason Psalm
23 stand out is that it presents such a balanced picture of life in
relationship to the Shepherd who keeps watch over us. There is the
pleasing green meadow and there are serene, still waters, but there is also
“the valley of the shadow of death,” an image we can easily associate with
the Lenten season through which we are presently journeying towards the
cross of Jesus.
The Psalmist says, The Lord “sets a table before me in the presence of
mine enemies” (Psalm 23:5). This is actually an image that is used often
in the Psalms, but we can never be entirely certain who the “enemies” are.
They could be adversaries that threaten our safety and well-being.
Enemies could also refer to illness or impending death. The Lord’s
“goodness and mercy” accompanies me all the days of my life, through
times of rapture and joy, happiness, contentment and relative security,
and periods when darkness descends and the future seems anything but
certain.
So clearly, whatever Jesus means by abundant life, it is not life that is the
absence of worry, doubts, fears, and life and death issues. The Christ who
is raised from the dead on Easter is also the one who was
beaten, tortured and crucified. When Jesus looked at the Palestinian
countryside, while he may have seen sheep and green pastures, he also
saw hunger, disease, injustice and oppression. The only begotten Son of
God knew the cold, cruel realities of life, and in the midst of it all he spoke
of life, abundant life.
When Jesus declares that he came “that we might have life, and have it
abundantly,” he could not have meant that he intends to make life
comfortable and plushy for all of us. Surely Jesus meant that he came to
offer abundance amid the harshness and cruelty of this life as we
sometimes experience it. Abundant life is not a life that guarantees
perpetual health or constant comfort. Having this promised “abundant life”
means to be in such close relationship with the living Christ that, whatever
reality we face, we are still able “to go in and out and find pasture” (John
10:9), we are able to take our place at the table he has prepared for us
in the presence of our enemies, and will find goodness and mercy (Psalm
23:6), meaning and purpose and even a measure of peace, in the midst
of whatever troubles, struggles, hardships, griefs and losses we
encounter as we journey with the Good Shepherd and he with us. The
abundant life is not about having more: more comforts, more
achievements and successes, more stuff; it is about quality of life and
relationships rather than quantity. The abundant life then, is lived so
completely in relationship with Christ our shepherd that whatever our
present circumstances, our “cup runneth over.” Abundant life is also the
hope and the assurance that no challenge or difficulty, no adversity, no
failure, no suffering or injustice can have the last word, which is the
promise of Easter towards which we journey.

El Salmo 23 es uno de los pasajes más conocidos y más queridos en
todas las escrituras. La gente adora especialmente las imágenes del
Señor nuestro Pastor que nos llevan a pastos verdes "y al lado de" aguas
tranquilas ". Esto me recuerda el estribillo del amado himno del
Evangelio, "En el jardín:" Y habla conmigo, y me dice que soy suyo, y la
alegría que compartimos mientras nos quedamos allí que nadie más ha

Jesús miró el campo palestino, aunque pudo haber visto ovejas y pastos
verdes, también vio hambre, enfermedad, injusticia y opresión. El
unigénito Hijo de Dios conocía las frías y crueles realidades de la vida, y
en medio de todo eso hablaba de la vida, la vida abundante.
Cuando Jesús declara que vino para que tengamos vida, y que la
tengamos en abundancia, no podría haber querido decir que tiene la
intención de hacer la vida cómoda y lujosa para todos nosotros.
Seguramente Jesús quiso decir que vino a ofrecer abundancia en medio de
la dureza y la crueldad de esta vida, ya que a veces la experimentamos.
La vida abundante no es una vida que garantice la salud perpetua o la
comodidad constante. Tener esta prometida "vida abundante" significa
estar en una relación tan cercana con el Cristo viviente que, cualquiera
que sea la realidad que enfrentamos, aún podemos entrar y salir y
encontrar pasto (Juan 10: 9), podemos tomar nuestro puesto en la mesa
que ha preparado para nosotros en presencia de nuestros enemigos, y
encontrará bondad y misericordia (Salmo 23: 6), significado y propósito e
incluso una medida de paz, en medio de cualquier problema, lucha,
dificultad, dolores y pérdidas que encontramos al viajar con el Buen Pastor
y él con nosotros. La vida abundante no se trata de tener más: más
comodidades, más logros y éxitos, más cosas; Se trata de la calidad de

LENT SERVICE
We begin Lent dinner this Wednesday @ 6:30 pm in the Fellowship Hall. Please bring a side dish to share with the group. Lent worship begins @ 7:15 after the dinner
Our mid-week Lenten Services will feature skits written by Pastor Mike, and these skits will be based on the Passover Seder, which is related to the Last Supper Jesus celebrated with his disciples the night before his death on the cross. We will be
incorporating prayers and bits of liturgy from the Seder interspersed with the music of Holden Evening Prayer. There will even be a skit that covers the symbolic nature of the food that is eaten at a Passover Seder, and how that relates to what we believe about
Jesus as the sacrificial Lamb of God.

YOUTH EVENT
There will be a Fun Night/Game Night hosted by the Millums at their home in Doraville for all of the Amazing Grace Youth. The event will happen on Saturday evening, March 14 and the address is: 3341 Northbrook Dr. Doraville, GA 30340. Fun Night will begin at 6:30 p.m. and will last about 2 hours. The Millums will supply the place, the drinks and the snacks. Youth are expected to bring games they would like to play, and the fun! By games, we mean board games and card games. Homework Help = 3 13.Youth Events = 1 14.On Saturday, February 1, the Youth Fellowship went to Winter Jam at State Farm Are-na downtown. Winter Jam is a concert featuring a variety of Christian musical artists, representing several musical genres, from rock to wrap and hip hop. Nine youth and three adults went. This was the first youth event we hosted since the fall. The concert lasted from 5 to approximately 10 p.m. We weren’t certain how the youth would respond since most of them knew nothing about the artists who were performing or their music, but it seems all of them had a good time, and some have already been talking about go-ing again next year. We got downtown early to find parking, then the group enjoyed walking around Centennial Park. We went to a nearby Chick Fil a for dinner, and then to the concert. For part of the evening we were in a part of the arena that was standing room only. Finally some ushers showed us to a box with seating. We had to observe very strict rules that the youth could not go off by themselves. They had to have an adult ac-companying them at all times. The arena was packed for the concert and the three adults were charged with everyone’s safety, so we had to be vigilant at all times. The adults who chaperoned the trip were myself, Deb Millum and Sergio Miranda. We have a few up-coming youth events in the planning stages as well as a fundraising idea.
15.On Sunday, February 2, a meeting was held of the newly reconstituted H.O.S.T. 16.Committee. The agenda for the meeting was made up primarily of matters related to the Spanish service. It has been four, almost five months, since the former members of Sagrada Familia joined our Amazing Grace family, and it was high time a meeting was held to determine how well the needs were being met for that service, and if there were any concerns the folks who worship at the service are having. Most of the third service worshipers stayed for the meeting, and a number of them brought food. It was a long, but productive meeting. I am pleased to report that the third service worshipers, includ-ing the former Sagrada Familia folks, are very pleased by the welcome and hospitality they have received at Amazing Grace. We discussed the needs of some of the wor-shipers who are essentially homeless, and do not eat consistently well. There was dis-cussion of starting to hold a meal after the third service, at least periodically. Also there was talk of making up some meal packages, much like our Grace Bags, that would con-tain non-perishable foods, especially canned meats that those in need could take with them for the week. Also, we talked about outreach strategies. I discussed the Welcome Wagon we have put together. The Spanish speakers discussed developing a pamphlet in Spanish in addition to the banners they are planning to make to hang out in front of the church. After the third service some Sundays, a group of our Latinos would go across the street to the new development and ring doorbells, go to the community neighboring on Sunnyside Dr. and to other new housing developments being built nearby. There will be a training event first to prepare people visiting to deal with the range of reactions they might receive when people answer their doors. It was an exciting meeting, with many ideas shared around the table. The third service seems eager to reach out and grow. Thus far the progress report on the Spanish service seems very positive and hopeful. We must remember that we are still embarking on largely uncharted territory here and feeling our way. We are doing our utmost to follow the leading of the Holy Spirit, and using common sense to avoid stepping on toes, remembering always to be respectful and flexible! 17.I am also going to report on a very productive Worship and Music meeting that was held on February 2 as well. Hopefully this doesn’t step on Bob Schwartz’s toes, but I feel I should comment on the meeting, because a significant part of it concerned up-coming bilingual services during Lent. There were some key leaders of the third service in attendance to offer in put on their ideas and needs. Robin Clavijo was on hand to help with translation. We discussed doing a bilingual service on both Palm Sunday and East-er. Robin and Lois seem to have a handle on music that can truly be sung by both the English speaking and Spanish speaking membership of our congregation. Some ideas and suggestions were shared regarding traditions from the Spanish worshipers which we will make every effort to include in these services. They should be interesting and excit-ing. We also discussed Holy Week, in terms of whether we might do something bilingual. However, I am now thinking that a bilingual service on Good Friday might be unwieldy and longer than most of the Amazing Grace folks who come to our Good Friday services would want. My thinking at this point would be to do our traditional Good Friday Ser-vice, beginning at 7:00 p.m. Then hold a Spanish service at around 8:00 p.m. The Spanish folks attending the W & M meeting indicated they typically worship late on Good Friday, because most of them work full days. So holding a late service on Good Friday would probably work well for them. 18.Once again this year, it is my plan to provide Drive Thru Ashes on Ash Wednesday morning, February 26, during morning drive time on Lawrenceville HWY. I will stand up near the road with a sign inviting people to pull into the driveway so I can administer the Ashes.

Nurture – Debi Linke
• Visitation Ministry = in January 9 Visitation Ministers visited 10 of AGLC Homebound Members.
• Large Group = Lud is planning a Bunko or game night, but needs to meet with his team to iron out details.
Outreach - BobMacKinnon
• The Hunger Walk for this year is March 15th. I am trying to find someone who will captain a team of walkers from AGLC. We have done this in the past with some success.
• Debi Linke organizing those who might like to knit or crochet Chemo Caps and Baby/Preemie Hats for Gwinnett Medical Center.
• The Good Old Guys are looking at using the money they collect in-house. Funds would be used for relief in a time of need for those in our congregation. Still working on the details.
• The men’s retreat was a success again this year. 19 men from 7 different churches at-tended the retreat. Planning will begin soon for next year's retreat.

Worship & Music – Bob Schwartz
• The Worship and Music Committee met on February 2, 2020 to begin planning for the season of Lent through Easter Sunday. Lent begins this year with Ash Wednesday on Febru-ary 26th. Palm Sunday is April 5th, and Easter Sunday is April 12th.
• The theme for the season will be “The Journey of Lent”. The theme of sanctuary decora-tion for the season will be “The Road to Jerusalem”.
• We are planning a slight change to the way the imposition of ashes is handled on Ash Wednesday. The imposition of ashes will take place at the start of the service, possibly as people enter the sanctuary. Then, during communion washed/wiped off using water from the baptismal font. Individual napkins will be used for each person to avoid having to deal with laundering towels.
• The Ash Wednesday service will be traditional, and we are considering using the organ for at least part of it.
• The midweek services between Ash Wednesday and Holy Week will use the Holden Even-ing Prayer liturgy as they have in recent years. Lois is currently soliciting teams to lead the services.
• We are currently planning to have a single bilingual service for both Palm Sunday and Easter. We are currently evaluating hymns, looking for popular seasonal hymns that use the same melody in both the English and Spanish versions. We are also evaluating hymns from the Spanish hymnal for candidates to teach to the English-speaking community, and hymns that can be taught to the Hispanic community. We are currently considering having the ser-vices on these Sundays at 11:00.
• The focus for Palm Sunday will be on the entry into Jerusalem.c
• Planning for Maundy Thursday and Good Friday is still in progress. As 7:00 may be too early for some members of the Hispanic community, we are considering a later start time. We may incorporate foot washing into the service.
• The theme for Good Friday will be the tearing of the curtain in the temple.
• Plans for the Easter Sunday service will be settled in the next few weeks.
• One note not related to Lent or Easter, the evening of Wednesday February 5th, choir re-hearsal was graced by a visit from a brown bat. The bat was not in the building long enough to suffer ill effects, was humanely removed and flew away.
Property – Mike Calabrese
• Finally installed the pulley system in the church to help to raise the veil on the Holy
Week, and in the center on top of the altar.
• Also replaced all the bad bulbs on all six chandeliers in the church.
• Also called the Pink Plumber to see why the Septic alarm is going off and he will be on site for the service call on 2/4/20 at 11 am. Will let the council know on the outcome.
• Met with 2 contractors to fix the crack of the foundation and all the rotten wood of sev-eral windows. Waiting on their estimates.

• Spanish Signage out front - any update? This is still in the works, and moving forward. It should be ready soon. They would also like to create a Spanish pam-phlet to be included in our welcome wagon packets.
• Altar Guild Chair - any update? ~ Anna, Roxanna, Judi Lee, and Socorro are willing to jointly be the Altar Guild. Janet Hutchins may or may not? Need to ask her. Connie is continuing through Easter so we have some time to get set for smooth sailing moving forward.
New Business
• New pictorial directory - Bob Schwartz thinks that the new financial/records software that we are using has the ability to print out a directory. It may be possible to upload pic-tures to be included as well. We do not think it is necessary to use a professional/outside company to create one for us. We will investigate in-house options
• Synod Assembly June 5-7 in Chattanooga - typically we send the incoming president and their spouse, or another incoming/returning council member. Joe and Sue Murray will be attending for us.
• Microsoft Office package - (around $79) for annual renewal. Giovanni needs, and Pastor may need soon as well. Bob S and Sandee will get together to discuss options and get it taken care of.
• Window Replacement Quotes - Mike Calabrese brought in 2 quotes, one for $8325, and the second for $3500, plus the cost of materials. Joe Murray motioned to use Thrivent money for the lower cost replacement, and the motion was seconded by Bob Schwartz. There was a discussion, and there are some questions about safety and insurance; Mike will find out the answers to those questions. Council voted to approve the motion, on the constraint that we get the answers we are looking for.

Winter Jam es un concierto que presenta una variedad de artistas musicales cris-tianos, que representan varios géneros musicales, desde el rock hasta el hip-hop. Nueve jóvenes y tres adultos fueron. Este fue el primer evento juvenil que organizamos desde el otoño. El concierto duró de 5 a aproximadamente 10 p.m. No estábamos seguros de cómo responderían los jóvenes, ya que la mayoría de ellos no sabían nada sobre los artistas que actuaban o su música, pero parece que todos lo pasaron bien, y algunos ya han estado hablando de volver el año que viene. Llegamos temprano al centro para encontrar estaciona-miento, luego el grupo disfrutó caminando por Centennial Park. Fuimos a cenar a un Chick Fil a cercano y luego al concierto. Durante parte de la noche estuvimos en una parte de la are-na que solo tenía espacio para estar de pie. Finalmente algunos acomodadores nos mostra-ron una caja con asientos. Tuvimos que observar reglas muy estrictas que el juventud no podía irse sola. Tenían que tener un adulto que los acompañara en todo momento. La arena estaba llena para el concierto y los tres adultos fueron acusados de la seguridad de todos, por lo que tuvimos que estar atentos en todo momento. Los adultos que acompañaron el vi-aje fueron yo, Deb Millum y Sergio Miranda. Tenemos algunos eventos juveniles próximos en las etapas de planificación, así como una idea para recaudar fondos.
El domingo 2 de febrero, se celebró una reunión del recién reconstituido H.O.S.T. Comité. El orden del día de la reunión estuvo compuesto principalmente por asuntos rela-cionados con el servicio español. Han pasado cuatro, casi cinco meses, desde que los antig-uos miembros de la Sagrada Familia se unieron a nuestra familia Amazing Grace, y ya era hora de que se celebrara una reunión para determinar qué tan bien se satisfacían las nece-sidades de ese servicio, y si había alguna inquietud. las personas que adoran en el servicio están teniendo. La mayoría de los fieles del tercer servicio se quedaron para la reunión, y algunos de ellos trajeron comida. Fue una reunión larga pero productiva. Me complace in-formar que los adoradores del tercer servicio, incluidos los antiguos miembros de la Sagra-da Familia, están muy complacidos con la bienvenida y la hospitalidad que han recibido en Amazing Grace. Discutimos las necesidades de algunos de los adoradores que son esencial-mente personas sin hogar y que no comen consistentemente bien. Se habló de comenzar a celebrar una comida después del tercer servicio, al menos periódicamente. También se habló de preparar algunos paquetes de comida, como nuestras Bolsas de Gracia, que con-tendrían alimentos no perecederos, especialmente carnes enlatadas que los necesitados podrían llevar con ellos durante la semana. Además, hablamos sobre estrategias de divul-gación. Discutí el carro de bienvenida que hemos preparado. Los hispanohablantes hablaron sobre el desarrollo de un folleto en español además de las pancartas que planean hacer para pasar el rato frente a la iglesia. Después del tercer servicio algunos domingos, un grupo de nuestros latinos cruzaría la calle hacia el nuevo desarrollo y tocaría el timbre, iría a la comunidad vecina en Sunnyside Dr. y a otros nuevos desarrollos de viviendas que se están construyendo cerca. Primero habrá un evento de capacitación para preparar a las personas que visitan para lidiar con el rango de reacciones que pueden recibir cuando las personas responden a sus puertas. Fue una reunión emocionante, con muchas ideas com-partidas alrededor de la mesa. El tercer servicio parece ansioso por llegar y crecer. Hasta ahora, el informe de progreso del servicio español parece muy positivo y esperanzador. Debemos recordar que todavía nos estamos embarcando en un territorio en gran parte in-explorado aquí y sintiendo nuestro camino. Estamos haciendo todo lo posible para seguir la dirección del Espíritu Santo, y utilizando el sentido común para evitar pisar los pies, ¡recordando siempre ser respetuosos y flexibles! También voy a informar sobre una muy productiva reunión de Adoración y Música que se celebró el 2 de febrero. Espero que esto no pise los pies de Bob Schwartz, pero creo que debería comentar sobre la reunión, porque una parte importante se refería a los próximos servicios bilingües durante la Cuaresma.
