SCHOOL HOLIDAY ROAD SAFETY

Students and teachers are looking forward to

the School Holidays that will start on Friday

2nd April 2021.

This means for the first 2 weeks of April there

will be more children, walking, riding and

scooting around local streets as well as more

people travelling long distances for their

holidays and therefore the Shire of

Woodanilling is asking all drivers to take extra

care during this period.

In addition given the likelihood of wet

weather during the holidays drivers are also

reminded to help keep everyone safe. They

should drive with their lights on at all times,

slow down, drive to the conditions and leave

extra distance between themselves and the

vehicle in front.

DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORT

When registering an unlicensed or new vehicle, clients must present an Invoice or Receipt for

proof of ownership.

The document must be in the name of the person or company that the vehicle is to be registered to.

This will enable the shire to process your registration in a timely manner.

Seeking fauna survey locations

Do you have any areas of remnant vegetation? Is there places on your

property where you think you may have wildlife? Would like to check

out the benefits of revegetation programs?

We are looking for locations where we can conduct fauna surveys. The

purpose of this is simply to determine if we have more in our

landscape that we actively see. Many of our creatures are small and

nocturnal so are often missed.

This information would be helpful to understand how healthy our

mostly cleared landscape still is.

A survey would be done over a number of days and is a one off

activity. The results would be available to you in a report if you wish

and would not impact the status of your land in any way.

For more information or to register your interest, contact Gen now.

The Sheep’s Back

Are you a sheep farmer? If you are, it is worthwhile subscribing to the email

bulletein ‘The Sheeps Back’.

This regular newsletter provides in depth information on sheep management

relevant to our region, topics such as containment feeding to bridge a feed gap

and feeding sheep with more efficiency.

Check out the website at www.sheepsback.com.au

Personal mosquito management

Now that we have had some rain, be sure to check out your own back yard to

see what may be harbouring mosquito larvae.

If you have ponds, perhaps add a larvicide (non harmful to other aquatic

species), empty containers that aren’t necessary, tend your garden to

encourage frogs to help control the wrigglers, invest in a mosquito trap which

we have promoted before. Purchase some mozzie deterrent products so you

can still enjoy your back yard.

The she-oak which our fantastic phascogale loves, unfortunately is something

that also is loved by mosquitoes as it forms a great wind break for them during

the day giving them safe harbour, as such, we are always going to be battling

them in our area.

We are continuing to monitor and treat areas of larger water, and encourage

you guys to do the same in your patch!

CLEAN UP AUSTRALIA DAY

On Friday 5th March, our school participated in Clean Up Australia Day. The students walked across to the local park to see what they could find. They thoroughly searched the area, collecting a few cans and lolly wrappers, however, there was not a lot to find. We should take pride as a community as to how clean we keep our town. Great job guys! MARCH MUNCH

Munch March is well and truly underway, with the students recording their intake of fruit and vegetables on a whole class graph. Thank you for supporting your children in this endeavour to increase the intake of fresh/raw fruit and vegetables into their daily diet. Part of the background to the “Crunch” is that the act of chewing in hard, raw vegetables and fruit aids in digestion as well as strengthening the jaw and muscles. The students are very much looking forward to enjoying their shared morning tea on the 31st March to celebrate March Munch's final day. CBH REGISTERED CHARITY

Woodanilling PS P&C is now a CBH registered charity. This means, when farmers are processing their grain on

LoadNet, they are now able to nominate the P&C via our Grower Number:40550436 to receive a grain donation. If you are unsure or require any assistance, please call the Grower Service Centre on 1800 199 083. Please spread the word! CONTAINERS FOR CHANGE The P&C is now registered for the Containers for Change program. Containers for Change is a recycling program which rewards the collection of eligible containers with a refund of 10c per item. Items can be collected and delivered to a refund point in Katanning or Wagin, at which you can nominate the P&C as your donation recipient using our Scheme ID: C10326397

The Woody Men’s Shed next meeting, Will be on Tuesday the 13th April 2021

New members welcome. Starting at 5:45pm with a BBQ—Meeting starts at 6:30pm

The year has got off to a slow start with only one decent job to do apart from our members own private projects. The Shire found just enough old railway sleepers in the back of the depot to make up the six garden beds that the Town Enhance Committee requested.. Because of the Weight and size of the finished garden beds, it took a while to make them up. (about two per week) but they are finished and delivered to the Shire depot.

Please ring Keith or Rod if you are planning to come and see us on a Tuesday or Wednesday morning to let us know that you are coming. — Because —

If we are quiet with little to do, Then we just might go home early.

WOODANILLING CWA

Wagin Woolorama presented our first community catering event. Four of us, as well as members of other local CWA branches, assisted to make sandwiches, assembled cake plates and poured cups of tea on both Friday and Saturday. It's a great event which provides a link to other women in our region therefore a chance for some networking.

The next meeting will be held on Monday March 15th at 2.00 p.m. at the cottage. Our next project to organise will be Anzac Day providing the COVID health issue remains at bay. Come along and join us for an afternoon cuppa.

Recipe of the Month- Marg's Easy Scones

WOODY RANGERS HOCKEY CLUB

AGM

When– Thursday 18th March 2021

Where– Woodanilling Tavern

Time– 7pm

Call for nominations for all positions, including executive members and com-

mittee members, be sent to the secretary prior to the meeting.

All positions are open.

As of the 2021 season the Woodanilling Rangers Hockey Club (WRHC) will be competing in the Upper Great Southern Hockey Association (UGSHA).

This decision has not been made lightly and has come after a number of in-depth discussions were held with club members to decide on the best possible option for the future of our club.

There are a number of reasons which have contributed to the outcome of this decision.

Currently the WRHC constitution states that one of the objectives of our club is to develop hockey in the Shire of Woodanilling. We feel the UGSHA can help us achieve this as they offer a larger, more vibrant competition which allows their Juniors to play in grades closer to their own age giving them the opportunity to have more of a go and play to their full potential. They also offer their Juniors more established pathways with skill development programs, higher level aspirations, umpire training and more turf exposure.

The UGSHA Seniors also have the opportunity to compete against a greater number of teams, turf games and an umpire development pathway. The UGSHA men’s B Grade and women’s B grade competitions skill level are a close match to a large portion of our member’s skill levels. Those players aspiring to a higher level of hockey will also have the opportunity to play for an A grade side, if they so wish.

We believe that a shift to the UGSHA is in the best interest of our club to fulfil our objective to encourage and foster hockey moving forward.

Stay tuned for more information on when the 2021 season will commence.

GET A TEAM READY FOR EASTER What teams loved in the towns – by Rophi, Travellers Three,

Bonne Journee and others – A highway packed with interest.

YORK. “The architecture, old houses, straw sculptures trail,

pressed tin ceiling in the Town Hall, wandering around the

streets and poking into shops - especially the 2nd-hand

bookshop. Accommodation at Greenhills was fabulous.”

Pingelly. “The warm welcome from Singh

and Family at our accommodation at the

fabulously old Pingelly Hotel, the meal

from Sukh in the impressive dining room,

the delicious smoked Christmas ham from

the prize-winning Pingelly butcher, chats

with happy locals.”

Brookton. “The lovely garden around the beautiful railway

station - under restoration - the architecture of the Squat

Bedford Arms. The well-tended but dusty cemetery seems a

fitting heroic resting place for the Brookton pioneers.”

Woodanilling. “Must be something in the water in

Woodanilling. We were taken by the number of people

reaching their 70s and 80s in this cemetery.“

Tenterden. “The friendly locals who stopped and asked, ‘you

alright love?’ then gave directions to the elusive cemetery

and the dear little mud slab hut just over the railway line

someone’s love home. Metters stove outside.”

Mt Barker. “The 7-mural trail around town is a bright and

cheery way to wander around Mt Barker. The beautiful old

railway station now VC still has the evocative smell of coal

smoke clinging to the rafters, and the displays are full of

historical interest.”

York. “Love York with its history and beautiful old buildings

and churches Every time we go to York, we say we must

come back here and spend more time exploring and learning

more We stayed at the Imperial Homestead and it was

wonderful. We will be back.”

Beverley. “is a surprise on the main road from York to

Brookton. Many old buildings in the town are well restored,

and the tourist office is new with great interactive displays on

the history of the town Love the hidden murals by James

Gidday.”

SOME PIONEER DETAILS THAT WERE FOUND

Policemen, stowaways, builders whose work still stand in the

towns, rabbit fumigators, convicts and farmers. Some colourful

lives discovered by teams on the Pioneer Challenge.

Patrick Hackett (York) Patrick was a police constable when at the

young age of 28 yrs he was murdered by two “Kelly” wannabe

miscreants in Beverley leaving a young wife with a one-week-old

baby.

Charles Gordon (Pingelly) Stowed away on ship in Scotland,

jumped ship at Albany. Worked on the Beverley-Albany railway

and took up virgin land East of Pingelly which he cleared while

living in a tent and working on the railway. Died at 58 yrs

following complications from surgery.

John Gilchrist (Pingelly) owned an agricultural manufacturing

business in Pingelly for 27 years inventing a stock feeder, wheat

pickler, bag rammer, rabbit fumigator, all of which sold widely

both around the State and Nationally. As farmers we benefited

from most of his inventions

Mary Conners (Katanning) Mary was transported to Van Diemen's

Land on the 4th of January 1849 on the vessel the Australasia.

She was 16.5 years of age. It looks like she was transported with

her sister Bridget, who was 18 years old at the time. Mary's

convict number was 863.

William Atkins (Narrogin) (Alias Hawkins)

Convict number 7916. He built St Patrick's church, Atkins Cottage,

also known as Mourambine Cottage, and several other buildings

in the area. He was born in Bures Hamlet, Essex in 1835 and

married Mary Ann Goodenough, daughter of James Goodenough

12 Aug 1873, the first marriage in St Patrick's. William died in the

Narrogin Hospital on

13 Sep 1926 and is

buried in the cemetery

there. Mary Ann and

her youngest daughter

are buried in St

Patrick's graveyard.

THE CHALLENGE

Pioneer Challenge is a fun heritage

hunt with the aim of discovering the

pioneers on Route 120 in WA. The

game is a hybrid of a clue finding

treasure hunt and a car rally that

encourages people to explore our

regional country towns and raise

money for charity. The game is run by

an innovative Rotary group from Perth

who has been looking to beat Covid-

19 and assist in the recovery of

Western Australia’s tourism industry.

HOW TO PLAY

Once registered, players are assigned three Pioneer towns and

nine Pioneers to investigate along a chosen segment of Route

120, (Southern Highway). Within these towns, players begin by

finding and photographing the graves of these Pioneers at the

local cemetery. Search for historical clues around town, answer

questions online and upload pictorial records of your trip. The

game is played on mobile devices and the Pioneer Challenge

website. Learn about the town, enjoy the local fare and flavours

and bring to life the amazing Pioneers of our state! Explore unique

and charming towns along the Great Southern Highway (Route

120). pioneerchallenge.com.au

SPRING INTO ACTION

“The best part was doing something totally

different together, exploring, discovering

people and places we never knew existed.” It

is easy to incorporate the Pioneer Challenge

in a fun day trip or as breaks in a longer

journey.

“It supports a charity too.”

Thank you for your support. Please forward this newsletter to

friends and colleagues and encourage them to participate!

Register a team at pioneerchallenge.com.au and plan your unique

experience.

The March Bushfire Preparedness Topic is: Bushfire Warning Systems

If you live in a bushfire risk area, you need to understand the Bushfire Warning

System and what each alert level means before a fire threatens your home. The

alerts give information on how severe a bushfire is once it’s started. Alerts have four

warning levels indicating the increasing risk to your life or property, and the

decreasing amount of time you have until the fire arrives.

The following tools and resources can help you to understand the four levels of

warnings:

DFES’ Bushfire Warning System Factsheet

DFES’ Alerts and Warnings Youtube Video

When a bushfire threatens, you can monitor official warnings at

www.emergency.wa.gov.au

By calling DFES’ Information Line on 13DFES (13 3337)

Local ABC radio

Remember: Your surroundings could be your best information source. Stay

alert to what is happening around you. If you believe you may be in danger, act

immediately to stay safe.
