Each year, the average American home wastes more than10,000 gallons of water on easy-to-fix household leaks.That’s how much water a family uses to wash 10 months’worth of laundry, and it could be adding 10 percent to yourwater bill.

Check your water bill in winter; if a family of four usesmore than 12,000 gallons per month, you may have a leak.If your water bill is not measured in gallons, you can easilyfind a conversion calculator online. Finding and fixing leaksaround the home is as easy as check, twist and replace.

Check toilets for leaks by putting food coloring in thetank and waiting a few minutes; if the color shows up in

the bowl before you flush, you have a leak. The culprit maybe a worn rubber flapper, which can be easily replaced at ahardware store. You should also check your outdoorwatering system this spring for damage from freezingtemperatures.

Twist the joints connecting your showerhead and use pipetape to ensure a tighter connection if you’ve got a leak.Outdoors, twist the hose connection tightly to the spigotand replace the hose washer if necessary.

Replace worn gaskets to nip faucet drips; one drip persecond wastes 3,000 gallons of water per year! If you needto replace an entire fixture, look for the WaterSense label,which signifies that a product has been indepen dentlycertified to use less water and perform well.

(NAPS)—Loyal and lovable, dogs makeexceptional friends and family pets, but there area few things to consider before bringing onehome. Whether you’re interested in a new puppyor a rescued dog of any age, below are someuseful tips to help incorporate a new pet into thefamily:

Choose wisely—When selecting a dog for your family,remember that differentbreeds are known toexhibit specific traits.Animal trainer AprilMackin explains:“Cocker spaniels, forexample, tend to besweet-na tured, playfuldogs that make greatfamily pets, but being asporting breed, regularexercise is especiallyimportant for them, somake sure those traitsblend well with yourfamily’s personality.”

Make a good firsti m p r e s s i o n — W h e nmeeting your new dog,whether at a pound or apet shop, give the animala chance to get to knowyou. “A bad idea wouldbe to overzealously hugthe animal and smother it with kisses, as that could feelvery invasive,” encourages Mackin. “Give him time to sniffand approach you, allowing him to warm up to yougradually.”

Prepare the home—Those first few days when a dog isintroduced into your home are crucial for a successfultransition into your life. To make his new environmentwelcoming and safe, set up protected areas like a crate ora zone that’s been contained by a baby gate. Be especiallymindful of any areas your pup might get into in thebackyard. Those new spring bulbs, for example, might bepoisonous if eaten, and the fertilizer, even if organic, canbe harmful to your pet if ingested.

Prepare the family—Discuss the training that needs to beput into your new pet’s first few months. One great way tostart is to watch a classic puppy love film together such as“Lady and the Tramp,” just released in a brand-new Blu-ray and DVD Diamond Edition for home viewing. The filmis family friendly, portrays many situations you’ll encounter

with your new pet and can be paused while you discussissues as they arise.

Set rules—Perhaps most im portant when training a newpet is to decide as a family what the rules will be for yourdog and commit to being consistent with those rules.Mackin asks, “Is it okay for him to be on the sofa? If theanswer is no, then be sure everyone knows this and agreesto follow this rule.” When training an animal, it’simportant to be kind but also firm, even if the dog whinesor begs. Setting and following rules will help your new petunderstand what is expected and your pet will be happier

knowing he is doing theright thing.

Schedule bathroombreaks—If dogs learnthat they will be let outregularly, it’s easier forthem to become housetrained. They need totrust that you will takecare of them and respondto their needs. “Praiseyour dog every time hegoes potty outside atfirst,” says Mackin.“They want to pleaseyou, so they’ll pick up onthis faster if they think itgets them rewarded.Rescue dogs may try tomark inside your homethe first few days, but

this behavior willdiminish with gentle yet

firm re minders. Puppies may require extra pa tience, assometimes they simply can’t hold it.”

Make time for exercise—Mackin reminds: “Pets needregular exercise just like people and daily walks are a greatway to accomplish this.” Be sure to use a leash for safetyunless in an area safe from traffic or crowds.

Reward good dogs—When your dog successfully “doeshis business” outside, comes when called or just waitspatiently at the door while you gather his leash, heap onthe praise! “Your dog is looking to you for signalsaffirming good behavior,” says Mackin.

Be patient—Sometimes a dog may be distracted, tired orjust need more time to learn a command. It’s important notto let out your frustration on the dog. “Keep trainingsessions short—two to three minutes—and if things aren’tgoing well, take a break and come back to it when you’recalm and both you and the dog can focus,” says Mackin.If you think you may need help, go to your local SPCA orvet and ask where they would recommend you go for somelocal dog training classes.
