Scripture Matthew 16:13-16 NT Page 18

Sermon I Believe in Jesus Christ Rev. Jamie Armstrong Let’s begin with our scripture in Matthew 16:13-16. Jesus asks his disciples a pointed question: “Who do you say that I am?” That is the question that comes to us today in our search for truth. Who do we say that Jesus is? Jesus is the most recognized figure in human history. A third of the world’s population calls him Christ, Savior and Lord. Another quarter calls him a prophet. Much of the rest of the world says he’s a great rabbi—a teacher and religious reformer. I’d invite you to consider your answer to his question, “Who do you say that I am?”

Christians see the story of Jesus as our defining story, the story that shapes how we see the world, and answers some really big questions: What is the meaning of life? Is there purpose to our existence? Is there life after death?

The answers to the big questions about meaning, purpose, truth, forgiveness, and life after death, are very different when we look at Jesus as the New Testament describes him, Jesus who is Savior, Lord, Christ, the Son of God, who gave himself for our sins to liberate us from this present evil age. They are very different when we believe that Christ was raised from the dead.

Every morning Jesus asks us this question: “Who do you say that I am?” Every morning Christians wake up and say with Peter, “Jesus, you are my Lord, the Christ, the Son of the Living God.” We say that when we offer our lives to him and see our day as an opportunity to fulfill his mission. We live differently because we believe, trust and follow him.

Five ways the Creed can guide and strengthen our faith: The Apostles’ Creed centers us on God - When we live our lives with God at

the center, we remain grounded and balanced, whole and holy. When God is at the center of our lives, we can put everything else in its proper perspective.

The Apostles’ Creed reminds us of the commitment undertaken in baptism - The creed is part of the ritual of initiation into the faith. By identifying what we believe, we are reminded of the commitment of our baptism. These beliefs, identified and affirmed, guide and direct our steps in living our faith.

The Apostles’ Creed invites us to live relationally - God is a Trinity of persons, loving endlessly as that love is poured out on us. We are part of the body of Christ and members of one another. We are part of the Communion of Saints and connected to the lives of those who have gone before us.

The Apostles’ Creed assures us of the guidance of the Holy Spirit - The creed assures us that the Holy Spirit is with us on this journey as our advocate and steadfast guide. The Spirit is at work in the world and in our lives.

The Apostles’ Creed connects the cross and the resurrection - The Apostles’ Creed reminds us that in light of the resurrection, death does not have the final say. We can trust in God to be at work in helping us to trust, forgive and love anew in each hardship and loss we endure as well as in each joy and blessing we encounter.

Affirmation of Faith No. 882 The Apostle’s Creed, I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead.

On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, is seated at the right hand of the Father, and will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic** church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. **universal

The Great Thanksgiving Leader: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Leader: Lift up your hearts. People: We lift them up to the Lord. Leader: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People: It is right to give our thanks and praise. Leader: It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth… ...And so, with your people on earth and all the company of heaven we praise your name and join their unending hymn: All: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Leader: And so, in remembrance of these your mighty acts in Jesus Christ, we offer ourselves in praise and thanksgiving as a holy and living sacrifice, in union with Christ’s offering for us, as we proclaim the mystery of faith. People: Christ has died; Christ is risen; Christ will come again. Leader: Pour out your Holy Spirit on us gathered here… ...Through your Son Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit in your holy Church, all honor and glory is yours, almighty Father, now and forever. All: Amen.
