With respect to the importa-tion of containers, the ASTECfigures for February 2012 areshowing the same figures asfor 2011. Regarding “drybulk,” which is primarily sandfor plastering and Limestone, the amount of importation hasremained the same as was thefirst two months of 2011.

ORANJESTAD -- Aruba PortsAuthority (APA) closed themonth of February 2012 witha total of 43 cruise calls to ourOranjestad harbour within themonth. The port had a count of90.907 passengers and 35.811crew members! These figuresindicate that there were fewercrew members and less cruiseships, but a slight increase of0.58% in visitors for the monthof February. APA’s registrationis in sync with projectionsmade in 2011 which indicatedthat cruise ships will continueto come with a 98% capacity.

The slight increase is due tothe fact that Crown Princess,

In Aruba, a small samplingof our women have achievedimproved social success, haveclimbed the corporate ladder, have better financial security, have stable families andhomes. But, a large percen -tage, based on news reportsand daily police records, areliving in dire straits emotio -

nally, relationally, and inmany cases, financially.

Violence and physicalabuse from unscrupulous menare rampant. The number ofsingle women with childrenseems to have doubled in thelast 5 years. Many womencontinue to complain aboutthe lack of respect they re-ceive from their bosses andmale colleagues. The numberof wo men drinking alcoholexces - sively has increased…they tell me, this is one waythey can forget their problemsand dampen the pain of rejec-tion!

I am invited constantly tospeak at many myself. How-ever, the question I raise is…how well are we equipped tomake a real, lasting differencein the lives of women, whatpractical steps will be taken tochange the obvious plights ofwomen in our society, whatlegislation will we enact to-morrow to better protect andpromote the true interests ofour female citizens! If theseelements are not on the agenda

with a definite follow up plan,I question the value of suchconferences..

To any keen observer, theplight of women in the Arubansociety is grave, to say theleast. Since last year’s Inter-national Women’s Day, thereare more women suffering thescars of abuse from men today. There are more women run-ning to our women’s sheltertoday. Violence to women inthis community is at an all-time high. As a psychologist Iknow that many of the abusecases never get reported andremain secrets in households.Women come to us to ‘unload’

International Women’s Day isthe day we set aside time tohonor the women in our soci-ety, our lives! Here on Arubawe pay some homage to ourfemale citizens on this day. There is a special conferenceplanned with speakers fromvarious walks of life comingto share their thoughts. Gov-ernment officials will pay trib-ute to our women…and theday will have been well spent. And, after all the nice wordsand eloquent speeches, andperhaps some ‘resolutions’ wego back to life as usual. Thewo men in our society returnto their lives to face the verysame challenges, uncertain-ties, fears, inequalities, abuses, disrespect and frustra-tions they had before the con-ference!

The question I raise is…what will we accomplish withall the rhetoric? The moneywe spent to bring thesewomen ‘experts’ to Aruba….was it worth it, when the av-erage women who did not goto the conference in the firstplace because they felt thatsuch conferences are only forthe elite sort; and many ofthose who did go, return totheir lives the next day to facethe same di lemmas of everyday unabated.

I must hasten to add herethat, by no means am I discre -diting the conference. I amconvinced that conferenceslike these are superb andshould be held and that theycan be extremely eye-opening;

WASHINGTON (AFP) - USPresident Barack Obama urgedIran yesterday to seek a diplo-matic solution to the nuclearstand-off, reaffirming his back-ing for key ally Israel and say-ing there was "too much loosetalk of war."

Addressing a pro-Israelilobby group in Washingtonalongside Israeli President Shi-mon Peres, Obama said inter-national sanctions werewor king and cautioned againstsaber-rattling as Iran movescloser to a nuclear weapon.

"Because of our efforts,Iran is under greater pressurethan ever before," he said.

"Iran is isolated, its leader-ship divided and under pres-sure. And the Arab Spring hasonly increased these trends, asthe hypocrisy of the Iranianregime is exposed, and its ally-- the Assad regime (in Syria)-- is crumbling. I firmly be-lieve that an opportunity re-mains for diplomacy -- backedby pressure - to succeed."

US intelligence is said tobelieve that Iran does not cur-rently intend to produce nu-clear weapons, though it maybe seeking the capacity to doso, and Washington has empha-sized the importance of deter-rent sanctions and diplomacy.

But Israel is reportedlyeager to move more quicklyand decisively against Iran'snuclear activities, using a mi -litary strike to prevent it fromobtaining even the capacity totake a decision to produce nu-clear weapons.

"For the sake of Israel's se-curity, America's security, andthe peace and security of theworld, now is not the time forbluster; now is the time to letour increased pressure sink in,and to sustain the broad inter-national coalition that we havebuilt," Obama said.

But he also reaffirmed hisstrong backing for Israel andwarned Iran's leaders that hewould not hesitate to use force,if required, to stop it develop-ing a nuclear weapon.

KAMPONG CHHNANG(AFP) - Pov Sopheak lost hisleft leg in a landmine blast in1990. Yet some nights thepain in his "left foot" is sobad he cannot sleep. Likemany amputees, he suffersfrom phantom pain.

Now, after two decades ofagony, the Cambodian is em-bracing an innovative tech-nique that promises reliefsimply by using a mirror totrick the brain into "moving"the missing limb, allowingthe pain to subside.

Sitting in a chair and hold-ing a full-length mirroragainst his leg, Sopheak, 50,smiles self-consciously assome two dozen physicaltherapists gather around him.

It is their first mirror ther-apy training session at theCambodia Trust, a rehabilita-tion charity for amputees inthe central province of Kam-pong Chhnang.

But Sopheak visibly re-laxes as he follows the in-structions of visitingCanadian trainer StephenSumner to wriggle his righttoes and keep his eyes on hisfoot's reflected image, super-imposed on the missing one.

"It's a new sensation. It'sstrange but in a good way,"

the former soldier, who nowworks as a security guard, told AFP. "I see my leg in themirror and I feel happy, likemy mind is at ease."

Sumner explains that thereflection of the intact limbcan fool the brain into "see-ing" two healthy legs, allow-ing it to once again sendcommand signals to thephantom leg -- signals thatwould previously come backdistressed because the limbwas missing.

"Looking in the mirror, the brain suddenly enablesyou to move your phantomfoot and do everything thereal foot is doing," said Sum-ner, 51, who lost his left legin a hit-and-run motorbikeaccident eight years ago.

"The brain just wants to betricked. It's dying for re-lease."

The theory, which alsoworks to ease phantom armsout of painful or cramped po-sitions, was developed in1995 by neuroscientist Vi-layanur S. Ramachandranfrom the University of Cali-fornia, San Diego, named asone of the world's most influ-ential people by Time maga-zine in 2011.

GENEVA (AFP) - Some910,000 lives have beensaved so far under a six-year-old policy of cooperation be-tween AIDS and tuberculosishealth services, the WorldHealth Organisation esti-mated recently.

The stepped-up collabora-tion has brought about betterprotection of AIDS patientsagainst TB, a leading killer ofpeople living with HIV, theGeneva-based UN agencysaid in a statement.

The number of HIV-posi-tive patients tested for TBgrew nearly 12-fold between

2005 and 2010, from 200,000to more than 2.3 million.

In the other direction, thenumber of TB patientsscreened for HIV grew five-fold, from 470,000 to 2.2million over the same period.

Since HIV weakens theimmune system, HIV-posi-tive people are more likely tobe infected with TB, and viceversa.

"We must address TB aswe manage HIV," said Got-tfried Hirnschall, who headsWHO's HIV/AIDS depart-ment.

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Aradical new camera that letsyou adjust the focus after youtake a picture began shippingthis past week.

The Lytro is the creationof Ren Ng, who started workon the digital camera whilestudying for a doctorate incomputer science at StanfordUniversity in California.

The telescope-shapedcamera uses what is knownas "light field technology" toallow the focal point of a dig-ital image to be changed afterthe picture is taken, a featurethat Lytro calls "shoot now, focus later."

Clicking on a Lytro pic-ture displayed on a computerscreen allows a viewer toshift the focus from a subjectin the foreground, for exam-ple, to a subject in the back-ground.

The Lytro can do this be-cause it uses powerful sen-sors to capture significantlymore light than a conven-tional camera.

Lytro chief executive Ng,who was born in Malaysiaand raised in Australia, de-scribes the images as "livingpictures" because of the abil-ity to manipulate them.

"This is a very excitingtime for our growing Lytroteam," he said in a blog postto mark the shipments of thefirst models. "We finally getto see how you use the Lytro

camera to create and shareyour own living pictures."

When Lytro pictures areshared online, the "light fieldengine" travels with eachimage so anyone can interactwith them on desktop andtablet computers or on smart-phones.

The 16-gigabyte model ofthe camera, which is aboutthe same size as a stick ofbutter and can fit easily in apocket, costs $499 and canhold 750 pictures. An 8GBversion costs $399 and cancapture 350 images.

While Spears occasionallyposts personal tweets, her ac-count is largely maintainedby her management team.Gaga has claimed to person-ally maintain her Twitter ac-count and regularly uses it tointeract with fans, share orig-inal pictures and make an-nouncements. After passingSpears, Gaga then dubbedherself the "Queen of Twit-ter," and has retained the titleever since.

LONDON (AFP) - Sir AlexFerguson believes Andre Vil-las-Boas was always on ahiding to nothing at Chelseaafter the Blues boss wassacked just eight months intohis reign.

Villas-Boas was axed lessthan 24 hours after Saturday's1-0 defeat at West BromwichAlbion following severalweeks of speculation abouthis future.

The former Porto bossonly took charge at Chelseain June last year but endureda miserable time, in large partdue to a stormy relationshipwith the club's leading play-ers.

The 34-year-old also hadstrained relationships withseveral of Chelsea's seniorstars, including England mid-fielder Frank Lampard, and awoeful sequence -- includingjust one win in their lastseven matches and only threefrom their last 12 in theLeague -- forced ownerRoman Abramovich to act.

The final straw came onSaturday as the Blues suf-fered a lacklustre 1-0 defeatat West Bromwich Albionthanks to a late winner from

Garth McAuley."Andre Villa-Boas has

parted company with ChelseaFootball Club today," theChelsea statement read.

"The board would like torecord our gratitude for hiswork and express our disap-pointment that the relation-ship has ended so early.

"Unfortunately the resultsand performances of the teamhave not been good enoughand were showing no signs ofimproving at a key time inthe season.

Manchester United bossFerguson, who enjoyed thesupport of his board throughseveral trophy-less seasons atthe start of his Old Traffordreign, hinted Villas-Boas wasalways likely to struggle atChelsea, given his lack of ex-perience and the demandingnature of owner RomanAbramovich.

"The lad's been underpressure but what you need inthis job is time," Fergusonwas quoted as saying on theBBC's website.

"His record at Porto showshe has got potential. ButChelsea was a big ask."

However, Newcastle man-

ager Alan Pardew said thatsome of Chelsea's senior starsshould apologise to Villas-Boas for failing to back hisoverhaul of the team's styleand playing staff.

Pardew said he felt for Vil-las-Boas, who was criticisedfor dropping Ashley Cole,Frank Lampard and DidierDrogba, after experiencing asimilar situation during hisspell at West Ham.

"I know he is from Portu-gal but he has had to take ona club there with a lot of sen-ior pros and in the back-ground probably had a very, very difficult job.

"When you are in a transi-tion year like that -- and Ihave been in it because I wasat West Ham when I inheriteda lot of senior pros who hadjust been relegated, and itwas very, very difficult.

"They made it difficult forme, and one or two of themhave apologised since, and sothey should.

"I hope one day that hap-pens to that manager becauseI think he deserves a betterturn than he has had."

Sunderland manager Mar-tin O'Neill was also sorry tosee Villas-Boas dismissedand he said: "I am really dis-appointed for the lad, reallydisappointed.

RIO DE JANEIRO (AFP) -The president of the Brazil-ian Football Confederation,Ricardo Teixeira, insists theLatin American country willdeliver an "impeccable"World Cup in 2014 despitecriticism from FIFA that or-ganisational progress isslow.

"FIFA concerns with re-gard to preparation of allWorld Cups are natural andlegitimate," said Teixeira.

"But the body can keepcalm because Brazil and itspeople have the competenceand seriousness required toorganise an impeccable andunforgettable World Cup,"Teixeira said in a posting tothe federation websiteovernight Saturday.

Teixeira's comments cameamid a deepening row be-tween FIFA and the Braziliangovernment after FIFA secre-tary general Jerome Valckeopined Friday that the organ-isers needed a "kick up thebackside" to ensure thatpreperations were completedon time for Brazil's first

World Cup in 64 years.Brazil Sports Minister

Aldo Rebelo reacted angrilySaturday to Valcke's trench-ant comments, saying thecountry would boycott Val-cke as a spokesman over hiscriticisms.

"The government will nolonger accept the secretarygeneral as FIFA spokesman,"Rebelo said in deriding Val-cke's comments as "imperti-nent," "inappropriate" and

"offensive".And Rebelo said

that if Valcke goesahead with plans tovisit Brazil on March12 he will not be re-ceived.

Valcke respondedby dubbing Rebelo'sreaction "a bitpuerile."

"I will go to Brazilon March 12," Valckeconfirmed.

FIFA have formonths expressedvarying degrees ofconcern over the ex-tent to which prepara-tions are on track for

the first World Cup in Brazilsince 1950.
