MISS MAZZELLA’S 3RD GRADE CLASS .

FROM THE PRINCIPAL Well, it has been quite a week… I hope this message finds everyone warm and safe, a special thank you to those families who made it to school this week, even though you may have been without power at home. We appreciate everyone’s flexibility and patience.

It was a great (short) week… The next time you visit Glenwood, be sure to check out our Art Show! Mr. Sharp has lined the main hallway with some amazing pieces made by our very own students… Congratulations to our Reading Olympians for a great job Monday, bringing home blue ribbons! Thank you to Mr. G for organizing and all the families who attended our Book Fair Event on Tuesday… it was a fun night out: students witnessed a “life-size” whale, made animal-themed crafts, tried a variety of hot dogs, and competed in the “guinea pig” obstacle course… then were able to shop our Book Fair after hours!

GLENWOOD WEEKLY NEWS MARCH 7, 2018

KINDERGARTEN Kindergarten students are busy building words with the short ‘a’ vowel sound. At home, you can challenge your student to spell three letter words with the short ‘a’ sound in the middle. For example, words that rhyme with cat, man, lap, and bag are a great starting point! In Math, students are busy working on numbers 11 – 20. Continue to practice writing the teen numbers at home. Enjoy the long weekend!

FIRST GRADE The first graders will be working on a fun reading project that will tie into the next reading workshop unit, Reading Across Genres. Each first grader has chosen an interesting topic to teach his/her classmates about. (soccer, bunnies, George Washington, sharks, dogs, bats...) Each first grader will create a READING Theme Bag related to his/her chosen topic. The Theme Bags will be decorated according to each student's topic. Each Theme Bag will contain different types of reading genre: non-fiction, fiction and poetry. The students' Theme Bags will be shared with each of his/her classmates. This is a fun and interesting way for the first graders to read across genres and learn fun facts about many different topics.

WACKY WEDNESDAY IN 1st GRADE…

SECOND GRADE Second graders are learning to estimate measures and use tools to measure the length and height of objects to the nearest inch, foot, and yard. Did you know that you can use your body parts to help you estimate measures? Ask your child to show you the length of an inch and foot using parts of their body. Our students are also learning to analyze the creative ways that authors' use language. Students need to think beyond the actual words to make sense about what is happening in the story.

THIRD GRADE Third grade students enjoyed their field trip to Lankenau Hopsital on Friday, March 2nd. The students took place in the "Health Adventure Program" taught by registered nurse, Ms. Florence. We were able to see two real skeletons, and interact with the digestive, circulatory, and nervous systems. The hospital staff were impressed by how ready, respectful and responsible our Glenwood students were. In addition, we continue to work on persuasive essays, adding evidence and examples to our argument. In reading, we continue to look deeply at our characters and discuss our theories. The third grade teachers are extremely proud of how well the third grade students are working in math as well. Ms. Coyne and Miss Mazzella are diving into equivalent fractions in Topic 13, and Ms. Salera continues to work finding equivalent fractions by multiplying and dividing.

FOURTH GRADE

4th grade is embarking on historical fiction journeys, working in book clubs, and reading stories about various times and places. The students are learning about the tools authors use to craft complex stories and characters. They have also been practicing how to read and reread texts closely to find evidence to support their answers to prompts. The classes will be wrapping up their final science rotation and will be starting to review order to prepare for PSSA. They are preparing for PSSA in both ELA and math by completing practice problems and reviewing information learned throughout the year.

READING OLYMPICS Glenwood's Reading Olympics team, The Last Readers, went to Upper Darby High School to compete in the Delaware County reading Olympics on Monday, March 5. After doing a team cheer, they went into their first round ready to answer questions based on the 44 books they read as a team. The first round was tense as both teams whispered with their groups to figure out the answers. Each team was asked twenty questions, and after the first round, we came out on top 18 to 16! The next round was the questions were harder, but we had the opportunity to steal. Again, we ended up on top earning another 18 points. In the final round, we were up against another group who had done a group job of reading all the books. The questions went back and forth, and again we were able to steal some points. Our team won the last round with a score of 25 points! Our

total score earned us a first place blue ribbon! If you see any of our teammates, please be sure to congratulate them! We were represented by Mekail Adil, Merritt Backerman, Annabel Bruce, Jordyn Carroll, Peyton Carroll, Kyle Chen, Carys Doyle, Sophia Fante, Averi Horn, Owen Schweitzer, Leo Song, Josh Wilson, Katie Loeper, and Alexi Burns. FIFTH GRADE Fifth graders are ready to lead their conferences. They have sifted through all the work and picked out items that show both their strengths and challenges. They have set goals and look forward to sharing them with their parents! We'll see you at conferences!

DR. SEUSS “READ ACROSS AMERICA” DAY AT GLENWOOD

THANK YOU to our State Troopers and SLMS students (some Glenwood alums!) for visiting on Friday March 2nd and reading to us!

GLENWOOD WEEKLY NEWS MARCH 7, 2018

Dear Glenwood Families,

As you may be aware, high school students nationwide are planning a national 17 minute period of silence on March 14th, the one month anniversary of the tragic shooting at Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida. The goal is to honor the 17 victims and to call national attention to the school shooting epidemic. Many of our elementary students are not aware that a school shooting occurred, and we do not feel it is developmentally appropriate to introduce this at the elementary level.

At Glenwood, we are having an all school Pride Assembly on Wednesday, March 14th. During the assembly, students will review safety procedures by answering questions on a Kahoot. We will also introduce our new school-wide Secret Pal positive behavior initiative. Students will be given a Secret Pal from their class, and then asked to look for opportunities when they can improve their Secret Pal’s self-esteem. Our goal is to inspire each of our students to make a difference and care about those around us each day. Although their pal is a secret at school, they are welcome to share this name with you!

Students will be brainstorming ways to interact with their new Secret Pals with Mrs. Vellios-Miller and Mrs. Gallagher during our Mix-It-Up Day at lunch. During Mix-It-Up Days, students sit with peers they normally would not have an opportunity to sit with to engage in meaningful conversations. To continue our Secret Pal initiative after March 14th, students will be asked that when they find an opportunity to fill their Secret Pal’s Pail, they drop a pom-pom into a pail on display in the lobby. Finally, please know that the safety of our student’s, volunteers, and staff are our number one priority. We have safety procedures in place and we practice these procedures monthly, including lockdown, lockout, weather, and evacuation drills. We are in constant communication with Pennsylvania State Police, and they advise us on how to continually improve our procedures. The Pennsylvania State Police plan to be doing regular walkthroughs of our school each week. This will allow PSP Troopers to become more familiar with our building, our students, and our staff. As always, we appreciate your support.

COUNSELOR CORNER: Greetings families! Each week I am going to strive to share some information from a school counselor’s perspective that will range in topics. This week is an article I often think about when instructing the kids regarding their peer relationships. Helping students identify negative peer behavior, and understanding the difference between the constructs of being rude, mean, or bullying behavior can help empower students regarding when and how to problem solve certain situations independently, or when to ensure they seek an adult’s assistance. https://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/passive-aggressive-diaries/201211/is-it-rude-is-it-mean-or-is-it-bullying I hope you find it a useful tool as we work together as a team to support your child’s social dynamics!

Have a great week! Stay warm!!! -Dana Vellios-Miller, School Counselor
