Faith Direct: During Lent, we prepare ourselves through
prayer and giving back to our parish. But, with busy lives
and active families, it's easy to skip a weekly tithe when
you are unable to attend Mass or are out of town.

This Lent, you are invited to set up recurring eGiving
though Faith Direct. Thanks to eGiving, your weekly
offertory will be automatically taken care of, which saves
you time and saves our parish money by eliminating all
those unused offertory envelopes. Getting started is easy!

Vocation
(2
nd
Sunday of Lent: Genesis 12:14; 2 Timothy 1:810;
Matthew 17:19)
There is a slight contradiction between the Psalm and
our second reading. In the first we read, “See, the eyes
of the Lord are upon those who fear him, upon those
who hope for his kindness, to deliver them from death
and preserve them in spite of famine.” Hope and
reverential fear seem to be a condition for deliverance.

But then St. Paul tells us, “He saved us and called us
to a holy life, not according to our works but according
to his own design.” Here, salvation is unconditional.

We see this also in the first reading. Abram was called,
and received God’s excellent promises, without having
fulfilled any requirement. And in the Gospel, no reason
is given why Jesus chose Peter, James and John to
witness his Transfiguration.

The Lord calls whom he will, when he will, as he will.
This is true for us, too. As La Salette Laity, Sisters and
Missionaries, we share the free gift of Mary’s love.

As in the case of Abram, responding to the call means
change, not necessarily geographical, of course, but a
change of heart, open to further gifts: fear of the Lord,
generosity in God’s service, willingness to bear our
“share of hardship for the gospel.”

The life of faith, professing and living out the Gospel
message as Catholics, has never been easy, but it
seems more difficult in the modern age. It demands
prayer. Prayer, in turn, requires silence, at least
enough for us to be able to hear the words, “This is my
beloved Son... listen to him,” spoken from a shining
cloud, and silently echoed by a Beautiful Lady bearing
his image on her breast.

And how can we read today’s Psalm without thinking of
her. Through her tears she saw the sufferings of so
many; she came “to deliver them from death and
preserve them in spite of famine,” even though they
were far from fearing the Lord or hoping for his
kindness.

How do we share that deliverance? There is no one
answer to such a question. But when we deeply desire
to live out our vocation, an answer will present itself in
due time, probably accompanied by the words, “Do not
be afraid.”

Alpha is an opportunity to explore life
and the Catholic Christian faith in a
friendly, open and informal setting. It
offers an opportunity to consider what
we believe, why we believe it, and
what it has to do with how we live.We
revisit our most basic Christian beliefs
and renew our openness to the Holy Spirit to be active in
our daily lives. Alpha is designed to meet everyone
where they are and invite them to grow even closer to
Jesus. The next Alpha is on Saturday, March 14th from
7:00 9:00 pm in the Main Hall. Do not worry about your
dinner on these Saturdays dinner will be served. You
will get to know happy, loving people around a dinner
table and together we will watch a video on a topic of the
very basics of Christianity. After the video, there will be
time to have a conversation about the content of the
video.

I humbly request each one of you to become part of
Alpha, in these THREE ways:

Three Names: This week, I ask you to pray for the three
people in your lives, whom you think especially need to
gain faith or deepen their faith. This week, pray for these
individuals and for your own renewal of faith.

Personal Invitation: As part of your Lenten commitment,
I ask you take on this gentle and generous task of
personally inviting those three people to attend Alpha.
Meet with them and assure them that you will accompany
them.

Prayer: 11:02 (In Gospel of Luke 11:02, Jesus said, “…
thy Kingdom come”). We ask you to set an alarm on your
cell phone for 11:02 AM or PM. When the alarm goes off,
pause, and pray for the three people you have invited to
Alpha. Maybe you have been longing for something more
meaningful; maybe you have been feeling the
disconnect, feeling of drifting away. Maybe Alpha is for
you!

Lenten Alms Giving Charity is a frequent and
important theme of the Gospels. As individual members
of Mary Queen, each of us is called to focus more
closely on almsgiving during Lent. Almsgiving is the
outward action of donating money or goods to the poor
as a reflection of your love for Jesus. This year during
Lent we are asking every person/family to donate the
following items to our Food Pantry. When you come to
Mass each weekend please place the items in the Food
Pantry Donation Box located in the church narthex.

It is better to give alms than to store up gold; for
almsgiving saves one from death and expiates every sin.
Those who regularly give alms shall enjoy a full life" (Tob
12:8 9).

Divine Mercy Sunday
We begin to prepare in Lent for our
celebration of Easter and Divine Mercy
Sunday as the eighth day of thanksgiving
(the Octave Day of Easter). We especially
focus on performing works of mercy,
spending more time in prayer, as well as
doing penances and giving alms. It is
important to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation
during Lent. Praying The Divine Mercy Chaplet and
Novena to The Divine Mercy can be helpful preparation
as well.*

Whether we prepare for Mercy Sunday individually or as a
member of a parish or other group, the essential ABC’s
remain the sameAsk for Mercy, Be merciful to others,
and Completely trust in Jesus.*

The Divine Mercy Novena and Chaplet will begin on Good
Friday, April 10th, following the 3:00 PM Stations of the
Cross. The remaining eight days of the Novena, from
April 11th 18th will be prayed at 3:00 PM in the St.
Joseph Chapel, including Easter Sunday. Divine Mercy
Sunday is April 19th. Watch the bulletin for more details.

Hospitality Ministry/Ushers
We are fortunate to have a large and vibrant parish family
at Mary Queen. It takes several ministries and many
volunteers within each of those ministries to conduct each
Mass. The Hospitality Ministry/Ushers are an integral part
of the Mass. Each Mass has a team of Ushers they
serve at all weekend Masses, as well as special Masses
throughout the year.Mary Queen needs more volunteers
to serve our parish as Ushers at all the Masses. If you
desire to join a ministry, but are unsure about which one
prayerfully consider serving our parish as an Usher. It is a
rewarding service open to men, women and responsible
children. If you have questions, please ask an Usher at
any of the Masses or contact James McConnell,
Hospitality Ministry Chairman at [email protected].
Thank you for considering our ministry.
