WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

GREETING DAMEN MAKUER, DINKA LAY EVANGELIST

Welcome to Zumbro Lutheran Church! SUNDAY, MAR. 8, 2020

Our current sermon series is

“Hard Questions On the Way” In Mark 8:27 Jesus and the disciples begin the journey to Jerusalem. We hear over and over that they are “on the way.” The disciples soon discover there are many things to learn while on the journey. A number of hard questions will arise.

In this week’s reading Jesus and his disciples are leaving Jericho and heading toward Jerusalem. Jesus predicts his suffering, death, and resurrection for a third time. The details are much more specific this time around. The disciples are both amazed and afraid. They are feeling a need to stay as close to Jesus as possible.

The liturgy used during Sunday and Wednesday worship throughout Lent will include music from Hidden With Christ, composed by Richard Bruxvoort Colligan. This setting is based on Colossians 2:12-13; 3:1-3.

There are monitors in the lounge for anyone to watch a live broadcast of the service.

Young children are most welcome with us at worship. If needed, the nursery is available and staffed during all services. Please ask an usher for directions.

Our 8:30am service is live-streamed and posted online.

Please silence your cell phones and pagers.

SONG OPEN UNTO ME RICHARD BRUXVOORT COLLIGAN

CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS

L: If you were to keep watch over sins, O Lord, who could stand? Yet with you is forgiveness, and so we confess.

silence is kept for reflection

L: Gracious God, C: have mercy on us. We confess that we have turned away from you, knowingly and

unknowingly. We have wandered from your resurrection life. We have strayed from your love for all people. Turn us back to you, O God. Give us new hearts and right spirits.

L: Receive good news: God turns to you in love. “I will put my spirit in you, and you shall live,” says our God. All your sin is forgiven in the name of ☩ Jesus Christ, who is the free and abounding gift of God’s grace for you.

C: Amen.

SCRIPTURE SONG TREE OF LIFE AND AWESOME MYSTERY MARTY HAUGEN

BIBLE READING MARK 10:32-52 NRSV 32They were on the road, going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was walking ahead of them; they were amazed, and those who followed were afraid. He took the twelve aside again and began to tell them what was to happen to him, 33saying, “See, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be handed over to the chief priests and the scribes, and they will condemn him to death; then they will hand him over to the Gentiles; 34they will mock him, and spit upon him, and flog him, and kill him; and after three days he will rise again.”

35James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came forward to him and said to him, “Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you.” 36And he said to them, “What is it you want me to do for you?” 37And they said to him, “Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory.” 38But Jesus said to them, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?” 39They replied, “We are able.” Then Jesus said to them, “The cup that I drink you will drink; and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized; 40but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared.”

41When the ten heard this, they began to be angry with James and John. 42So Jesus called them and said to them, “You know that among the Gentiles those whom they recognize as their rulers lord it over them, and their great ones are tyrants over them. 43But it is not so among you; but whoever wishes to become great among you must be your servant, 44and whoever wishes to be first among you must be slave of all. 45For the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many.”

46They came to Jericho. As he and his disciples and a large crowd were leaving Jericho, Bartimaeus son of Timaeus, a blind beggar, was sitting by the roadside. 47When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to shout out and say, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” 48Many sternly ordered him to be quiet, but he cried out even more loudly, “Son of David, have mercy on me!” 49Jesus stood still and said, “Call him here.” And they called the blind man, saying to him, “Take heart; get up, he is calling you.” 50So throwing off his cloak, he sprang up and came to Jesus. 51Then Jesus said to him, “What do you want me to do for you?” The blind man said to him, “My teacher, let me see again.” 52Jesus said to him, “Go; your faith has made you well.” Immediately he regained his sight and followed him on the way.

HYMN 333 JESUS IS A ROCK IN A WEARY LAND

APOSTLES’ CREED C: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy

Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
