COURTENAY — If you had asked Kaylee Norton 10 years ago where she thought she would be today, it would
not have included stepping on stage in ridiculously high heels wearing a bikini smaller than some of her undergarments.
However, that’s exactly what the
resident of Royston, near Courtenay, is preparing to do.
Norton is getting ready to compete in a bodybuilding competition March 26 at the ACT Art
Center in Maple Ridge.
Norton has never been athletic and has suffered from self-image and weight issues most of her life.
Going into her early adulthood, she suffered from depression and turned to food for comfort, resulting in her weight peaking at 210 pounds.
Despite always having an interest in health and fi tness, she was never motivated enough to take care of herself.
“There comes a point in your life that you have to say ‘enough is enough,’ and that’s what happened to me,” said Norton.
Eight years ago, when her weight was the highest it had ever been and her self-esteem was its

lowest, Norton asked her husband for help and got on track to a healthier lifestyle.
Back in 2005, she was able to see her fi rst live bodybuilding competition.
“I couldn’t help but think ‘I could do that!’” she said. “I loved lifting weights and wasn’t afraid to lift heavy. I decided to hire a personal trainer and I got hooked.”
Norton fi rst stepped on stage in 2006 for two competitions in Calgary, where she lived at the time.
“It’s an amazing feeling,” she said. “I was approaching 30-years old and in the best shape of my life. I had to buy a new wardrobe and I remember crying in the changeroom because I couldn’t believe I had actually done it.”
Since then, Norton has moved forward in the fi tness industry and has become a personal trainer, personally and professionally working out of her studio gym in her home in Royston for the past two and a half years.
“I knew that, with where I had come from and what I had done, I could give other women hope,” she said. “I understand what it’s like to be overweight and unhappy. Change is hard. I was extremely lucky to have a wonderful support system, but not everyone has that. That’s why I wanted to be a personal
trainer — to be a support system and a motivator, and to tell, and show, women out there that you can do it.”
So what does this competition mean to Norton?
“I’m a competitive person, but running races and playing sports was never a huge motivator for me,” she said. “I love spending time in the gym and after my fi rst competitions, I was hooked. This competition will be bittersweet for me, though, as it coincides with some other major changes happening in my life.”
The job at which Norton has been working since last summer will be over March 31.
“After a competition, it’s always diffi cult because you spend months working towards it, and it feels like it’s over so quickly,” she said. “There is an emotional low when it’s done and you return to your normal routine. However, just a few days after this competition, I’ll be without a job, which is actually really exciting and terrifying and an amazing
opportunity. Working full-time limits how many clients I can see and this will greatly increase my availability. Not only that, but I will be working on completing my Yoga Fitness Leader training and hopefully beginning my Nutrition Certifi cation later in the spring. All sorts of exciting opportunities are opening up.”

The traditional Canadian yard saleThere seems to be
something inherent in our culture that says you ‘get nothing for nothing.’ Everything, it seems, has to be paid for one way or another. Following on from that logic means that we give nothing away for free.
So, if we can’t give stuff away the next best thing to do while keeping to the rules of the culture is to … hold a yard sale!
Spring is just around the corner and while some of us are getting the boat ready
thinking about this year’s garden.
But wait. Before anything can
be done, both seasonalseafarers and the green-fi ngered growers
need to wade through the mountains of junk that havemysteriously materialized during the dark days of winter. Yes, it’s time to plan that greatCanadian

Yard Sale!
When you open that garage door and see that pile of ‘stuff’ your fi rst instinct may be to immediately close it again.
Then, with sober second thought, instead of seeing a pile of junk you imagine that you see a pile of dollars. The yard, or garage, sale can be a fun and economical
way of ‘downsizing’ and can bring in a few extra bucks, enough perhaps to buy some new bedding plants or to get the outboard its long overdue annual
iservice.
Once you have decided on a date and laid odds with the local bookie that it won’t rain on the very day of your sale

PORT HARDY — Dawn Moorhead’s boots crunch through
a layer of ice-crusted snow as she guides a pair of visitors through a small fi eld. Rimmed by a stand of leafl ess alders, the
white-blanketed fi eld seems barren and inhospitable.
But Moorehead knows otherwise. What she sees are
the almost limitless possibilities of life.
“It’s not ideal agricultural land; it needs a lot of work,” Moorhead said. “But it’s a canvas for us to work on.”
The “artists” are members of Port Hardy’s Grassroots Garden Society, who last spring were granted a lease on a 2.65-acre plot by the District of Port Hardy. Society members, who have decades of
combined practical experience in organic gardening and farming, will use the garden as a teaching tool for area schoolchildren.
“We’re calling it an outdoor classroom,” Moorhead said of the garden, located adjacent to the town ballfi eld at the corner of Park Drive and
Mayor’s Way. “Or a living lab, which might be more accurate.”
The society got things started last summer, building, raising and harvesting vegetables, berries and fl owers in a display garden on a portion of the property, and starting several large compost piles.
With the aid of several grants, the society was able to hire student help, and received donations of equipment for stump and rock removal, milled cedar for raised garden beds and Sea Soil for planting.
The display garden ultimately provided food to the temporary kitchen in Alert Bay that aided victims of September’s fl ooding in Kingcome Inlet, and pumpkins from its pumpkin patch to pre-school children.
But that was just the fi rst stage of what will be a long-term

project.With the help of
a grant of $24,384 recently received from New Horizons, the society plans this year to continue clearing and leveling of the property and put in the centrepiece — a Grassroots Children’s
Garden complete with a pavillion to protect visitors from the rain. Eventually the society plans to add a Back to the Future Garden focused on traditional, local food plants.
A series of fi eld trips has already been scheduled and members are working with local teachers to
incorporate the garden into their curriculum.
“We’re not attempting to turn all the kids into gardeners,” said David Lang, who has worked for years to convince the District of Port Hardy to explore organic farming. “We want to show them where their food comes
from, how it is grown.”Don’t expect
any lessons in the application of pesticides and herbicides. The Grassroots Garden Society is a member of the Certifi ed Organic Association of British Columbia and of the Island Organic Producers Association,
and will help visitors learn to welcome the multitude of organisms that make up an organic garden.
“The purpose of organic agriculture is to produce a soil rich in natural organisms, in which balance is good,” said Lang. “Then you have a more natural, healthy
growing medium, which generally results in better produce than traditional agriculture.”
The society will host a blessing of the new Children’s Garden this spring, and end the season with a harvest dinner and celebration with traditional dancing.
But children, who will have input on the varieties of plants grown in the garden, will not have to wait until fall to enjoy the fruits of their labour.
“Last summer, we had people eating right off the vine,” said Moorhead. “And we heard from people who brought out-of-town visitors through the display garden.
“It really has a lot of potential.”

there are a few other considerations to make such as what will you sell and for how much? Now as a basic rule of thumb, unless you are an itinerant dealer who is trying to make a fortune away from the prying eyes of the Taxman, your objective is to sell as much as you can as quickly as you can and to free up space in the home and garage.
This now brings us to pricing your treasures. Bear in mind the ‘prime directive’ is to get rid of as much, if not all, of what you have. Ask too much and you probably won’t even get an offer. Ask too little and guess what? Either it will be snapped up in no time fl at or in disbelief someone will inevitably ask ‘what’s
wrong with it’? So what’s the right
price? Ask yourself (and be honest) how much would you pay for that exact object if it were offered to you? After determining what you would really be prepared to pay, reduce that amount by at least 25 per cent.
It’s a simple equation that usually results in a successful sale. Yes I know that you originally paid a lot more for it, but you don’t want or need it anymore (which is why it is now considered part of the mountain of ‘stuff’). Your objective is to get-shut of it – all of it! Your original cash is already gone, vanished, disappeared into the pockets of Mr. Wal-Mart or whomever; so however much you get is a bonus! Think
of a garage or yard sale like this: Usually to get rid of stuff you have to load-up a vehicle, drive to the landfi ll, pay to have the pleasure of unloading and dumping and then drive home again. All of this costs you time, energy and cash! On the other hand, if you have a sale people actually pay you money so that they can cart it away – only to take it to the landfi ll themselves next year.
Of course there are legends about fortunes made and lost at such sales, some are even true! For example, when I was in Saskatoon four years ago, a client asked me to do an appraisal of a lovely matching set of highly collectible Vintage ‘Sherman’ costume jewels. The set was deep ruby-
red and jet stones; a really lovely wide bracelet, ear-clips and full-chest necklace. The client had originally bought it as a Valentine’s present for his girlfriend but when she discovered that he paid just $5 at a local yard sale she gave it back and dumped him for being so cheap. He may have lost the girl but lucky for him at least he
kept the set; appraised value - $3,500. Not a bad return on a $5 investment.
