March
2019 “Remember you are dust . . .”
We begin our journey
through the season of Lent
on Ash Wednesday (March
6th). At Faith Lutheran Church
we will gather for our Ash
Wednesday worship at 7:00
pm. Our service will include
a celebration of communion
and the imposition of ashes
on our foreheads.
As we receive the cruciform smudge of ashes on our foreheads, we hear
the words “Remember you are dust, and to dust you will return.”
These words, alongside the dark ashen cross serve as potent reminders of
our identity as we begin our walk along the path of Lent. Ashes have long
been used as a marker of mourning or penitence and call us to remember
our patent unworthiness in the face of God’s righteousness. For much of
history this meaning has been dominant as Lent has often been observed
as a time of penitence and fasting.
Marked with ash, and hearing the words Remember you are dust . . ., we
are also called to recognize our mortality and our utter dependence upon
the one who has fashioned us out of the dust of the earth. As we read in
Genesis 1:7 “. . . then the Lord God formed man from the dust of the
ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and the man be-
came a living being.” (NRSV)
(continued on page 2)
Page 2
(continued from page 1)
While many might find this stark reminder of our mortality unsettling, in receiving the cross-
shaped mark of ashes we are also reminded of our identity as children of God. Created from
dust, washed in the waters of baptism, and given new life through God’s Spirit, the ashen mark
of Ash Wednesday simply makes plain that which is always present: the indelible mark of
Christ upon our very being.
Ash Wednesday is a call to spend the next 40 days remembering exactly who we are: children
of a most amazing and generous God!
I invite you to join us at Faith Lutheran Church as we
gather, eat, and worship together throughout the season
of Lent. We begin the season at 7:00 pm on Ash
Wednesday (March 6th). For each of the following
Wednesdays until April 10th we will gather for a meal of
Soup and Bread at 5:45 pm, followed by 7:00 pm worship
including a Lenten Drama and Holden Evening Prayer.
Ready for more Lenten fun? Following our Wednesday
Lenten worship services we will be hosting a series of
Bible Studies from 40acts. These studies will invite us to
experience Lent as a 40 day opportunity to be a
generous people. Alongside these small group studies, I encourage each of you to visit the 40
Acts website https://40acts.org.uk/signup/ Here you find the opportunity to participate in the
40acts challenge, a call to live each day in the season of Lent as a generous people. Each day
the folks from 40acts make available a generosity challenge along with a Bible-based blog
post. Each of the challenges is designed to help us grow as a people of faith, reflecting God’s
love and generosity into the community in which we live.
Remember that you are dust. Remember also that you are God’s beloved child—in whom God
is well-pleased.
Soli Deo Gloria

March Monthly Appeal: Winnipeg Harvest Winnipeg Harvest is a non-profit organization whose goal is to provide emergency food assistance to food banks in the city or directly to individuals who require it. They pick up donated and reclaimed food from major grocery retailers on a daily basis as well as rely on food and monetary donations from the community. Last year, approxi-mately 13.2 million pounds of food was brought in to the warehouse and re-distributed to the hungry. There is a continual need for food donations, monetary assistance, as well as volunteers to help in various roles. The top food items that are always required are: canned fish and poultry, canned fruit and vegetables, canned stew, chili and brown beans, peanut butter, whole grain pasta, baby formula and baby food, rice, canned spaghetti sauce, cereal and canned soups. For the past 16 years, we have had a loyal group of volunteers from our congregation who have assisted in various capacities at the warehouse. We have been mostly involved in sorting donated items, making emergency food kits or re-packaging large donations into smaller amounts. At times, we have also been involved in some special events. The tasks assigned are never too difficult or overly taxing. We meet at the warehouse on the last Saturday of the month from 1 until 3 pm. We would love to have you join our group.

FGI NEWS March 2019
We're working on it! As you might imagine, organizing an event is a lot of work. There are many details to be worked out if we want a successful and fun event.
Something that is always popular is the silent auction. Items will be bid on by putting your bid on the bid sheet. Bidding will cease at a specified time and the highest bid will take the item home. Of course we need items to bid on! As is normally the case, we will be approaching various businesses for a contribution. However, we know that there are many talented individuals in our midst who are woodworkers, photographers, artists, bakers, stained glass experts, etc. who would love to share some of their talent with others. If you are one of these people, please consider a donation. It's a chance to showcase your talent and help a worthy cause. (Spiritual Care Program at River Park Gardens) Contact Dan Ruppel at 204-254-4690 if this idea interests you.
Set the date aside and spread the word. When tickets ($20) become available they will sell out quickly. We anticipate seating for only 150. Hmmm, Mother's Day is the 12 th. A ticket for Mom to attend maybe?

Lutheran Book Clubs
Faith Lutheran Book Club Chapter 1 Our book selection for March is Educated: A Memoir by Tara Westover
Tara Westover was 17 the first time she set foot in a classroom. Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, she prepared for the end of the world by stockpiling home-canned peaches and sleeping with her "head-for-the-hills bag". In the summer, Tara stewed herbs for her mother, a midwife and healer, and in the winter she salvaged in her father's junkyard. Her father forbade hospitals, so Tara never saw a doctor or nurse. The family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education. Lacking any formal education, Tara began to educate herself. She taught herself enough mathematics and grammar to be admitted to Brigham Young University. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her over oceans and across continents, to Harvard and to Cambridge. Educated is a tale of fierce family loyalty and of the grief that comes with severing the closest of ties. Westover has crafted a universal coming-of-age story that gets to the heart of what an education is and what it offers.
Everyone is welcome to join Chapter 1 members for food, fellowship and a lively discussion of Educated: A Memoir on
Tuesday, March 26th @ 7:30pm in the Blue Room at Church.

Faith Lutheran Book Club Chapter 2
The book selection for March is The Break by Katherena Vermettee When Stella, a young Métis mother, looks out her window one evening and spots someone in trouble on the Break — a barren field on an isolated strip of land outside her house — she calls the police to alert them to a possible crime. In a series of shifting narratives, people who are connected, both directly and indirectly, with the victim — police, family, and friends — tell their personal stories leading up to that fateful night. Lou, a social worker, grapples with the departure of her live-in boyfriend. Cheryl, an artist, mourns the premature death of her sister Rain. Paulina, a single mother, struggles to trust her new partner. Phoenix, a homeless teenager, is released from a youth detention centre. Officer Scott, a Métis police-man, feels caught between two worlds as he patrols the city. Through their various perspectives a larger, more comprehensive story about lives of the residents in Winnipeg’s North End is exposed.
We will meet off site on THURSDAY March 28th at 7:30pm.
Please join us for a lively book discussion and Fellowship.
