Farewell to Geoff and Catherine…

The first Sundayservices after theNew Year can bequiet affairs, somuch so that clergyoften take a well-earned break thento get over theprevious hecticChristmas serviceschedules. Sunday4th January thisyear saw ‘record numbers’ in our congregation atSt. Augustine’s, and Rev. Geoff Boucher openedthe service by joking how impressed he was tosee so many coming to celebrate Epiphany! Thiswas of course, Geoff and Catherine’s last Sundayservice here and the West Monkton congregation

was delightedto welcomemembers ofthecongregationsfrom our‘sister’churches inthe Beneficeat Kingston StMary,CheddonFitzpaine andBroomfield, together with

our friends from Bathpool Chapel and many morefrom far and near who came to say thank-you andgood-bye to both our much-loved Rector and toCatherine. After the service and the presentationof gifts, we enjoyed a wonderful informal lunch inchurch. Sincere thanks to those of you who joinedin this memorable occasion, thanks to so manywho brought the food and drinks for us all, thanksto Brian Hill who organised the event with JohnRoynon, and a special thank you for making this

a day which Iknow meant somuch to Geoffand Catherine. With a rousingfarewell fromsome 230 of us inchurch thatmorning, andothers who wereunable to join us,they move toCambridgeknowing our lovegoes with them.

The Rector moves on…and so does the church! Our Archdeacon John Reed has advised us weshould expect the vacancy caused by Rev. Geoff’sdeparture to last around 10 months. The processof starting to appoint Geoff’s full-time successorstarts this month (February), but many of you willbe aware of the good news that a new part-timeAssistant Priest, Rev. Tony Woodward, hasaccepted the vacancy which occurred after Rev.Ann Fulton left to become a Chaplain at St.Margaret’s Hospice. Tony and his wife Carolpresently reside in Lancashire, but are nostrangers to Somerset. Tony is a former Vicar inChard, and they both look forward to returning tothe West Country. They hope to move in toKingston Rectory soon after Easter, and we verymuch look forward to welcoming them.

Continuation of ServicesThanks to our Archdeacon John, to retired clergyand to a number of lay people, I am pleased to sayour rota of services continues in much the sameway as previously. A vacancy is challenging, but italso gives opportunities to try different things andto experience different worship styles. The peopleof God aren’t just the priesthood, so if you wouldlike to get involved in a service – perhaps a shorttalk, or maybe reading a lesson or contributing to

our prayers, then please give me a call to chat itthrough… I’d love to hear from you! In themeantime keep an eye on the services listed in theVillage News and on the West Monkton villagewebsite.

Heritage Project, car-park and new toiletupdate…After the delight on receiving the news of our grantfrom the Heritage Lottery Fund, I wrote to our threeprimary schools inviting their involvement in theHeritage Trail and Questionnaires. I was able toconfirm funding for costs would be met by the grantreceived. The Lottery Fund requires an Activity Planwith stake-holders as an urgent part of the process.I am delighted to report both West Monkton andCheddon Fitzpaine Primary Schools have indicatedthey will be contributing to the Trail Questionnairesand Dr. Chris Dalton will be working on a route plan. After constructive meetings with TDBC, architectsand others, the planning application for the car parkextension has now been submitted. Thanks toHenry Besley for helping me to erect the newboundary line which shows the extent of theproposed new parking area. The imminent marketing of West Monkton Rectorymeans we need to construct a new toilet to replacethe existing facility in the garden at the back of TheRectory. Discussions are in hand with theauthorities.

And finally…Please include in your thoughts and prayers Geoffand Catherine as they move to their newsurroundings, Tony and Carol as they prepare tojoin us in the Benefice, and all those who arecontinuing the work of the church in this place.

The day of collection at each household will notchange, but the time when recycling or refuse trucks

Mothers’ Union

Report on our activities in 2014Before our meeting on 13th January we met inchurch for a service of Holy Communion. During theservice we welcomed two new members of theMothers’ Union, Wendy Stark and Joan Pettitt. Wethen returned to the Rectory and held our AnnualGeneral Meeting. The afternoon closed with tea andbiscuits. We welcomed the Rev Maureen Doble toour meeting in February and she gave us aninteresting an informative talk on her experiences asa hospital chaplain. At our March meeting we wereentertained by Rev Geoff who gave us a short talkand then we enjoyed a quiz. It was good to get the“grey matter” going! We held our usual service of Holy Communionduring Holy Week in church which was led by RevGeoff. This was followed by coffee and hot crossbuns and cake in the church. Thanks wereexpressed to Doreen, our organist for againsupplying music for the service. In May, after our short service of prayers andreading we welcomed Ann Hall to our meeting.Ann’s husband had been Mayor of Taunton Deaneand she told us that as Mayoress she had enjoyed avisit to Buckingham Palace Garden Party and hadalso attended many other functions. In June wewere entertained by Fiona Densham, a DiocesanMember and a past High Sheriff. She camedressed in her official outfit and told us how she hadbeen appointed High Sheriff and what it involved. Her appointment lasted for one year and she couldnot be reappointed again. Instead of our usualmeeting in July we all met at Capland Farm,Capland for a cream tea. This gave us anopportunity to chat to each other and also enjoy alovely cream tea.Unfortunately our speaker could not be with us inSeptember so we enjoyed a talk by Betty on her twovisits to Russia in 1992. During the first visitarrangements were made to take a group of

handicapped pupils from Princess MargaretSchool run by Barnardos on a visit in thesummer. The youngsters enjoyed visits to RedSquare and Stalin’s Tomb and also a visit to theBolshoi. We were entertained in October by theRev Sue Hounsell who told us about a trip sheand her husband made to Oporto, the home ofSandeman Port and then described a river tripshe made ending up in Santiago de Compostela, the famous town in Spain. We were pleased to welcome Robert Dungeyand his wife to our November meeting. He gaveus a very interesting talk with slides on how hehad become involved in Mission AviationFellowship (MAF). He told us how it had beenstarted after the war by two RAF pilots who hadflown planes to various parts of the world to helppeople who lived in inaccessible parts of Africa,Australia, Papua New Guinea etc. This has nowgrown and many people have come forward totrain as pilots and fly people, goods etc to placeswhere the runways are no more than dirt tracksand where roads are almost impossible to driveon. We also enjoyed our December meeting wherewe had a quiz on Christmas and then joined in agood singsong with Doreen playing the organ. While enjoying a cup of tea and mince pie wesaid goodbye to Rev Geoff and Catherine wholeft us on 6th January to go to Cambridge. Wepresented them with a small gift as a thank youfor allowing us to use the Rectory for ourmeetings.

Gardening Corner

Just when we have got settled into a routine ofplanting and seed sowing and concentrating on thebeds, we blink and suddenly notice that the grass hasalready started growing. Any spare time you had isout the window until the autumn! At Hestercombe weuse three types of mower to cope with all the varioustypes of lawns and grasses and by the height ofsummer it takes three of us 2-3 days just to get thegrass cut let alone anything else. The cylindermowers have a roller on them and are great for

getting stripes in thelawn of the formalgardens. They areheavy old machines todrag up and down thesteps I can tell you. Forslightly less formalareas, such as thelawns in the shrubbery,we use a lighter rotarymower - much easier touse on slopes   and

rougher grass. For the larger areas such as the lawnoutside the orangery and outside thehouse we can jump on our ride on mower. We all want a perfect lawn and a perfectlawn really does create a stunningbackdrop for your plants and just sets thewhole garden off.March/April is the time to start making aperfect lawn.Firstly look at the level of your lawn - doyou have hillocks and divots?  it is easy to repair bumps or hollows by peeling backthe turf and adding or removing the soil. Then just firm the turf back down and itwill soon knit back together. by now thesoil is warm enough for grass seed togerminate and so you can start to over-seed any bald patches. It is always hardto get grass seed that will give youexactly the same colour of grass. It allevens out over time but you can help theprocess by blending the over seedingaround your bald patches. Now is a good time to weed lawns before the weedsreally get going. There are loads of products out thereto dazzle you but basically you are looking forsomething that will kill broad-leaved plants (ie not

grass). I don't like to blanket spray whole lawns, instead I spot spray. OK, you are still using aherbicide but at least not so much - it is acompromise. If you have a small lawn you could dig the weeds outindividually but in our case it would take forever! Ifyou do use a herbicide remember not to put the firstcuts of grass on the compost heap. Keep it separatefor a good six months while any herbicide residuesubsides, then you could add it.An alternative/add-on is to feed the lawn. If you don'tlike to use chemicals there are several organic feedsout there. At Hestercombe we use an organicseaweed feed. The idea is that if you add somethinghigh in nitrogen and get your grass growing quickly, itwill help to out-compete weeds. The fitter your grassis the less weeds you will have. You tend to getweeds in less dense patches of lawn. If you buy amower with a mulching setting on it you can feed thegrass with its own clippings as you mow- what couldbe easier!Your first mow of the season should be on thehighest setting possible. This stops you scalping thegrass and removing too much growth, it will alsokeep the grass protected from any late frosts.

Look at the shape of your grass now too. One of theeasiest ways to make a garden look really neat is toget your edges right - either with a half moon or withsome edging shears. Sharp edges really set the lawnoff nicely and if you want to make a garden quicklylook like you've worked wonders, the edges are theway to achieve this.So if you want to impress people and make it looklike you’ve worked really hard in the garden - just nipout and do the edges. Then get back in for a welldeserved G and T!

Plough Sunday Sunday 25th January saw the annual PloughSunday service take place at St Augustine’sChurch. Traditionally in our country parishes, the plough was blessed at the start of thefarming year to ensure good weather, sowingand harvest for that season. St Augustine’sservice continues the tradition, when a horsedrawn plough (provided by the Besley family)and various tools are brought to the service.Members of our farming community old andyoung were present to take part in the blessingceremony at the service, which was conductedby Lay Reader Kevin Davenport. The addresswas given by another local farmer, RobWalrond from Pitney, who is the Bath and WellsDiocesan Rural Life Advisor. After the service, those attending enjoyed a ploughman’s lunchprovided by the Friends of St Augustine’s.

Love and FriendshipIan Robinson, headteacher, wrote recently in aSchool Newsletter about how the school istackling a common playtime issue:‘Previously I have talked about how we will befocusing on the value of Love and Friendship thisterm. As part of this we have been looking at howchildren use their break time and lunchtime. We have recently had a few incidents of childrenbeing hurt either physically or by something meanthat has been said. We are taking a number ofsteps to encourage positive play.We have created areas on the playground for eachphase of the school to use in different ways;Reception children can use the trikes and carsduring lunch time; Key Stage One have a range ofequipment out each day and are supported by YearFive Playground Leaders to play positive games;Key Stage Two also have a range of sportsequipment that they can use. We have also createda quiet outdoor area underneath the canopy and aquiet indoor space for those who do not want to beoutside all lunchtime.Upper Key Stage Two in PE will be designingplayground games that they can then teach tochildren in Key Stage One.School is a place in which we want children tolearn, that includes learning how to play positivelywith each other. We take seriously and teachersaddress any incidents during the school day thatresult in a child being hurt or upset. The steps wehave taken we anticipate will also give the childrengreater positive opportunities for play andencourage them to make the right choices inshowing love and friendship towards each other.’

Young Voices

On a recent Friday there was great excitement inthe school as members of the school choir gotready to travel to the LG Arena in Birmingham toattend Young Voices.Miss Green, Mr Robinson and four other staffmembers took forty-eight children to join withover six thousand other children to sing theirhearts out.It was a long day with rehearsals in the afternoonand a wonderful concert in the evening which theparents were able to watch.  Both the childrenand the adults had an amazing time. There wasalso entertainment provided by Lucy Spraggan,Mic Lowry and Tom Billington.  Everyone whowent said that the school should definitely do itagain next year. The school would like to say aspecial thank you to Miss Green for organisingthe trip and to Mrs Nacey for preparing the choir.

Reading Together

Back in September a ‘Reading Together’ team wasset up in the school. Once a month a group ofwilling and excitedvolunteers turn up at theschool and meet up witha group of equallyexcited children fromYear 1 and 2.Books are chosen, thegroups of childrengather round ‘their’ storyteller and a babble ofnoise fills the hall.Stories are read, questions asked, pictures drawnand the time goes very quickly - suddenly it is timefor the children to go back to their classes.

A member of staff isalways present and itseems to be a happytime for all concerned;the adults becomepart of the schoolcommunity and thechildren are findingout that reading is askill to love and shareacross the age

News from the Bird World

Seagulls get a bad press. They are certainly noteveryone's favourite birds and the Herring Gull thatleft me holding the crusty stub of a pasty on theseafront at St. Ives a couple of years ago as itswooped skilfully to snatch the remainder out of myhand, tumbled way down my popularity list! They are, nevertheless, a fascinating family; somuch so in fact that some birders (so calledLarophiles derived from the generic latin name forgulls) devote their whole attention to them. Our larger gulls have adapted very well to our urbanenvironment and these are perceived as the maintrouble makers but for this, humans have onlythemselves to blame. Herring Gulls and Lesser-black Backed Gulls, both of which breed in Tauntonalbeit in reducing numbers are now found in most ofour major cities, encouraged by the rubbish weleave. Indeed some of these birds rarely, if ever visitthe coast. They can be aggressive in defending theiryoung although there is much press hyperboleabout 'rogue birds' and 'violent attacks'. These cancertainly be disconcerting but very rarely will gullsactually make contact with a person. The answer tourban gulls is simple but difficult to enforce - reducethe feeding opportunities provided by our litter anddiscourage nesting by sealing rooftops with netting. There are plenty of 'good' gulls around even amongthe large species most of which are coastal. The hefty Great Black-backed Gull, our largest, is atrue seabird not often seen inland and certainlynever in towns. Two of our rarer large gulls are verypale as adults, with beautiful all-white wings. Theseare the Glaucous Gull which breeds in Iceland andthe smaller andmore delicatelooking IcelandGull which, confusingly, breeds not inIceland butGreenland.Somerset seesone or two of botheach wintergenerally in strongnortherlies. A fewyears ago an Iceland Gull spent most of the earlyspring on the beach at Minehead. One of the distinctions between the large and smallgulls is the time taken to reach maturity. Large gullsdo not assume adult plumage for four years, and thesmaller ones take two. The wide variety ofplumages provide a fascinating challenge for manybirders, and ageing and, indeed identifying, somecommon gulls can be very complex indeed. Smallergulls are generally less of a problem since mosthave distinct structural differences but ageing themcan still be difficult.

The most widespread of our smaller gulls is theBlack-headed, something of a misnomer since thehead, which is only dark in summer, is actuallychocolate brown. This is the small gull you aremost likely to see in urban parks or following theplough, sometimes in large flocks. It does notbreed in Somerset, but is common throughout theyear, and numbers are augmented in winter byRussian and east European birds. The CommonGull, a gentle looking bird slightly larger than theBlack-headed, is common only in northern Britainand is quite scarce in Somerset. It too will followthe plough. Many of the most sought-after small gulls breed innorthern Scandinavia or even further north.Among these is the aptly named Little Gull, verytern-like in appearance, which breeds on lakes inFinland and the Baltic States. A few appear onlarge waters in Somerset, such as Cheddar andDurleigh Reservoirs on spring passage. Some ofthese northern gulls are true rarities. Theseinclude the Ivory Gull, a bird of the arctic ice fieldswhich feeds on the remnants of Polar Bear kills. One or two stray further south in winter and I waslucky enough to see one in Dorset in 1982. Thereare no Somerset records.

The equally rare Ross's Gull, named after thepolar explorer, is a stunningly beautiful small gull. There is a small breeding population just north ofChurchill Manitoba, but most breed aroundNovaya Zemyla in the high Russian Arctic. Asmall, delicate silver and white bird with a tiny billRoss's in summer plumage sports a beautiful pinkflush underneath and a dark neck collar. Shouldone arrive in Somerset it would create greatexcitement. We can hope, since this spring ajuvenile bird spent several weeks close by on theExe estuary with Black-headed Gulls. So take another view of 'seagulls'. There is muchmore to them than you might imagine!Brian HillSomerset Ornithological Society welcomes peoplewhatever their level of interest in birds. Our next indoormeeting is at Ruishton Village Hall on Thursday March19th. Entry is free, as are refreshments, and all arewelcome Please contact me on 01823 443503 for furtherdetails.

A Medical Student’s Experience atLyngford Park Surgery

I am a former Heathfield Community School Studentcurrently studying Medicine at King’s College London.I am in my final year of Medical School and started myeight week GP rotation with Dr Burton and the team atLyngford Park Surgery at the beginning of January.Lyngford Park Surgery is a King’s approved practiseso I am lucky enough to return to my homeland tostudy the Medical Specialty of General Practise in mylocal community.Under the supervision of Dr Burton I have my ownclinic with 30 minute slots and anybody willing to beseen by a Final Year Medical Student can book anappointment with me. At my stage of training I cannotprescribe any drugs or order any tests andinvestigations, but Dr Burton always reviews thepeople I see. It has been a real eye opener for me. Ihave examined everybody from 9 week old babies to80 year olds. The hardest part for me is when someone attendswith a viral infection, I wish there was something Icould do to make it better, but the best thing for avirus is to let the immune system take control of theinfection. Unless someone has a true bacterialinfection then taking antibiotics when you do not needthem can often make you feel worse.I am really enjoying my time here and all the staff andpatients have made me feel very welcome. I wouldlike to thank everyone at Lyngford Park Surgery fortheir help in training future Doctors.Dr Christian Jennings

Anal Sac Disease in Dogs

What are the anal sacs? The anal sacs are two small pouches of skinlocated in the 5 or 7 o clock position, just inside theanus. They contain malodorous secretions that areused for territorial marking and identification andare normally squeezed out as stools are passedthrough. They can also be emptied spontaneouslyby forceful contraction of the muscles in that areawhich can happen if your animal is frightened orupset. If the anal sacs do not empty properly thesecretions can build up, dry out and may becomeinfected.

What are the signs that the anal sacs are full?If your dog’s anal sacs are full they will scoot theirback end along the floor or lick and chew at thebase of the tail.

TreatmentThe anal sacs can be manually expressed usingthe thumb and forefinger. If you think they are full, pop to your local vets and they can empty the analsacs for you. If they are infected they may need ashort course of antibiotics and if they are severelyimpacted they may require sedation and flushing.

What can you do to prevent problems arising?Anal sac disease is seen more commonly inoverweight dogs and so it is important for your dogto stay at a healthy weight to help prevent this.In dogs with recurrent anal sac problems, addingfibre to the diet can also help by bulking out thestools. Ask your vet about a fibre supplement foryour animal’s diet. Some dogs will require regular emptying of the analsacs to prevent them becoming impacted, and inextreme cases, surgery to remove the anal sacscan be considered.

If you have any further questions regardingyour dog’s anal sacs or you think they mightneed emptying, contact your local vets and theywill be able to help.

Somerset Waste Partnership

Managing waste and recyclingservices for all authorities inSomersetRecycling site developmentsVehicle parts – Residents can now, for a fee, recycleor dispose of a wide range of their domestically-generated vehicle parts at Bridgwater, Chard, Frome,Highbridge, Minehead, Street, Taunton, Wellington,Williton and Yeovil. Vehicle parts do not qualify ashousehold waste and were previously not accepted.See SWP website for full details & prices.Trigger tops trial – Febreze and Tesco are workingwith SWP to help residents recycle more plastics. Thetrial is expected to run until next spring, collectingtrigger tops and flip caps from spray and squeezyhome care plastic bottles at five large Tesco storesand all Somerset recycling sites.Commercial waste sites – Recently added recyclingand disposal services for commercial waste at moresites have gone well and are proving particularlypopular at Yeovil. SWP’s website has advice oncommercial waste disposal and the prices businesseswill pay for using recycling sites.Food waste collection pilotsIn 2014, SWP was selected by WRAP with four otherauthorities to pilot a number of measures to test ifthey could increase levels of food waste collections.Placing “no food waste” stickers on refuse bins, alongwith leaflets delivered to residents produced goodresults. Even better results were achieved byproviding free caddy liners with the stickers, althoughthe liners on their own had little effect.SWP have, on invitation, applied for further funding toimplement the successful elements on a larger scaleand will roll out further if successful.New waste regulationsFrom January 2015, all waste collectors have a newduty to collect glass, metal, paper and plasticseparately to “facilitate or improve” the recovery ofquality materials.SWP will need to demonstrate to the EnvironmentAgency that the Somerset system complies with therequirements. However – unlike the system in manyother authorities – Somerset conforms closely to thestandard expected as we already have separatecollections and have always regarded material qualityand traceability as paramount.Severe weatherSWP has reviewed its severe weather advice andprocedures to ensure it can offer useful support toresidents if changing weather conditions disruptkerbside collections or recycling sites.FeedbackWe REALLY want YOUR feedback on these SWPbriefings. Please send a quick e-mail [email protected] if youthink they are useful or could be improved.Information on SWP servicesThe main source of advice and information on SWP servicesis www.somersetwaste.gov.uk.Customer service helplines for all partner authorities canassist with service enquiries. Why is it important that everyone votes in local elections?

Did you know that your local councillors are consulted on nearlyeverything that happens in your area? They take an active part ininfluencing what services are and are not provided - and that affects youand your family!Parish and Town Councils are responsible for many things like: busshelters, litter bins, local halls and community centres, parks, publicclocks and footpaths to name but a few. They are also consulted onplanning applications, highway improvements, street signs, grant fundingand projects that affect where you live and what facilities your communityhas or receives.Local councils are delivering more services for residents than ever before and with District/Unitary/CountyCouncil reviewing their services, Parish and Town Councils will be in a position to do even more in the future.Everything we come into contact with on a daily basis affects how we feel and what we do - so how much effortdo you actually make to get your opinions known?  Voting in local parish and town council elections takes so littletime, but will have a daily impact on you for the next four years, because councillors remain in office for a fouryear term and their decisions affect the future for your whole community. If you leave voting to others your

opinions and wishes will not be heard and simply by voting for a candidate youfeel will reflect your view sends a clear message of your opinion to thedecision makers. It is said ‘people get the local council they deserve’. Do you know who in yourcommunity is standing for election and what they hope to achieve? Thenames of your councillors should be on your parish notice boards, in local postoffices or displayed around your community. If you cannot find this informationlocally your District/Unitary Council may be able to advise you.Councillors live side by side with you in your community; they are the mostlocal level of government, being easily contacted and directly answerable tothe community every time they walk out of their front doors. They raise moneyprimarily through your council tax to administer their decisions and you needto be sure that you have voted for the right people to look after your community. If you do not vote, others will and their views may change your life.

Have a voice - vote in the local elections on 7 May 2015From the South West Association of Local Councils.

A Suffragette, fighting for women toget the vote and being arrested forher efforts!

Taunton Film Society

Taunton Film Society was formedtwelve years ago to provide a goodvariety of interesting and thoughtprovoking films because these were not being shown inthe local multiplex.Taunton Film Society members love good films; we arenot experts on film technique, camera angle or even goodacting but we do know what we like and, as in anyhealthy Society, we all like something different. Our members seem to have a different opinion aboutwhat makes a good film so at the end of a film evening, when everyone has chance to fill out a response slip, it isnot unusual for some members to have given the film 5marks (the highest category) and others to have givenone mark (an abject disaster of a result) – so, not muchdifferent from the film reviews one reads in the papers, when you wonder whether the reviewers have actuallybeen watching the same film, as they come to suchdiametrically opposite opinions.TFS also aims to enhance the arts provision bypromoting the study and appreciation of film by arrangingevents, the next one will be held at The SPACE inMonkton Heathfield.Love, loss and obsession are the themes to beexplored on Sunday 19th April from 2pm to 6pm. Thesethemes will be explored in relation to the 1990 film Truly,

Madly, Deeply directed by Anthony Minghella andthe Tennessee Williams’ play A Streetcar NamedDesire. The title of the conference is Truly, Madly, Deeply:On Love, Loss and Obsession. It will consist of ascreening of the film accompanied by a papergiven by keynote speaker, Dr. Lesel Dawson, aSenior Lecturer at The University of Bristol, followed by a discussion period. Dr. Dawsonspecializes in 16th and 17th century EnglishLiterature and the history of emotions. Her book,Lovesickness and Gender in Early ModernLiterature, explores representations of eroticdesire as an illness in Renaissance medicine, philosophy, and the works of Shakespeare andhis contemporaries. The event will be chaired by Abigail Wedderkopp.Tickets are £10.00 each, with Society memberspaying £7.50. Refreshments will be available.Tickets can be purchased at the door or inadvance from [email protected] you are interested in film we would love to seeyou at a showing in the near future.More information about TFS and an up to dateprogramme can be found atwww.tauntonfilmsociety.co.uk or [email protected].

Play space opening went with a swing!

The School Councils from West Monkton PrimarySchool and Heathfield Community School joinedTaunton Deane Mayor Cllr Dave Durdan onTuesday February 11 for the opening of a newplay area in Farries Green. The £74,000 play space, provided by TauntonDeane Borough Council, has been funded throughdevelopment contributions linked to Bathpool fromconstruction company Strongvox. It has been a real community effort involving theparish, Borough and Somerset County Councilworking together with the schools with the single

aim of creating a great space for local children.West Monkton Parish Council has provided seats, agilityequipment for the children and a litter bin. Representativesfrom the parish were on hand to make sure the event goeswith a swing! The play area will provide lots of challenges and fun foryoungsters from toddlers to teenagers and was designedby Louise Baugh of local landscape architects Swan PaulPartnership of Taunton. The design is based on the results of consultation carriedout on behalf of the Borough Council by Barnardos, with

children from West Monkton Primary School and Heathfield CommunitySchool.Cllr Catherine Herbert, who holds the leisure portfolio, said: “We’re really grateful tothe schools and everyone for helping make this play space a reality – I am sure it willbe really well used and enjoyed.”Ward Councillor Norman Cavill said: “This is an important landmark in thedevelopment of Monkton Heathfield as it marks a significant step towards buildingthe new community. Farriers Green Park will be a flagship of play provision in theparish, as it now has facilities for all ages including adult outdoor gym equipment”.The play area retains the refurbished swings and see-saw and has the addition of ametal pod swing, sand digger, sand, bank slide, Bailey wooden climbing piece, horse and cart, agility equipment and seating. The area has been landscaped to provide greater play value, with bridges linking theplay equipment and laid out by local firm Parsons Landscapes of Stoke St Mary, who also installed the equipment, after winning the tender for the works.Adapted from the Taunton Deane Press Release
