Dear Parents and Carers, Each year the staff work together to create the Annual Improvement Plan. This plan evaluates the areas where we are doing well and areas we need to target for improvement. Two key learning goals have been set for 2018, targeted improvement in Reading and Writing and improved student learning confidence and connectedness to school. In 2017 we focused on writing through teacher professional development and adopting new teaching strategies. We are continuing to consolidate these practices in 2018. An important practice in Reading is to have High Expectations of our students and to monitor their growth carefully through observations and data collection. This informs us about what each student needs to move them forward on the learning continuum. To improve teacher practice in Guided Reading the teachers have observed each other and given feedback about areas of strength and areas that can be refined to assist the students’ learning. Goal setting and regular feedback is also a practice used with our students to promote ownership of their learning and to encourage them to understand the things they can do to improve their reading. The students have learning goals to encourage the reading behaviours that will build their confidence and skills in decoding new words and comprehending what they have read. For example… Dekota: My reading goal is to point to the words while I am reading. Oscar: My goal is to look at the beginning letters of words and sound out words. Silas: To chunk letters when reading new words Abby: My reading goal is to not skip words and to improve my reading fluency.
Other goals, such as looking for text clues, making predictions, inferring meaning and making evaluative judgments about the story form part of classroom activities and are explicitly taught. As I regularly work in or visit the classrooms I am pleased to see the enthusiasm the children show in Reading sessions. It is also good to see how many students are recording their home reading and regularly reading with parents and other family members.

Hello travellers! Last time I was in South Korea! Well done to the sleuthy few who figured that out! But where am I this week? Here’s some clues to help you: 1. This country is the 4th largest island in the world. 2. 90% of the animals and plants in the country can only be found on this island and
nowhere else! 3. This country was a safe hiding place for many pirates and their ships during the 1700-
1800’s. 4. Tropical cyclones are common in this country. 5. There is an insect called the ‘Hissing Cockroach’ in this country. 6. Lemurs are found in this country. Research in books and the internet and when you think you know the answer write it down with your name and place it in the Jelly Bean basket. A name will be pulled out to win a prize at assembly! Best of luck!
