Oikeo Music Inc is a guild of songwriters, singers, musicians, andartist’s as well. Maybe some members

or subscribers to our magazine aren’tsure exactly what a guild is, or does. Ithought it might be fun to give a bit of European, historical background thatmight bring insight to all of us.

Historians call the times we live inModern Times, which actually beganwith the Renaissance. This began inItaly when a few writers chose towrite their literature in the Italian

language instead of Latin whichtook power from the church andaristocrats thus bringing knowledgeand education to the common man.The Renaissance was an amazingperiod of genius in our world’shistory. The word renaissance means“rebirth” and it refers to a time whenEuropean scholars, called humanists, were rediscovering ancient Greek and

Roman writings, new scientific laws, new forms of art and literature, newreligious and political ideas, and newlands including America. However, the most distinctive feature duringthis time period was the value andappreciation given to writers andartists.

The writings during this time period brought to light a new conception

of life and freedom, a more joyousexpression in art, and a boundlessplay of human feelings encompassingour sense of beauty and intellect.During these times, every town inEurope boasted trade members of associations called craft guilds. Bythe 14th century there were morethan 50 guilds authorized by the localgovernment, sometimes chartered

by the King. This was the era of Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci.Because a guild was valuable and

important in the community andto the King, there were rules andregulations. (One note of interestis that the guild rules provided forcare of their own sick or needy andrequired them to take care of theirwidows and orphans.) Sometimescrafters, artists or musician could become members based on the degreeof skill. Sometimes a membershipwas very hard to obtain because it

was passed along through inheritance.Guilds required standards on thequality of articles made or sold. After all, the King was a client! Forexample, a weavers’ guild required acertain number of threads to the inchin cloths they crafted.

These people literally gave their entirelives to becoming excellent in their

craft. A young man would be boundout by his parents to an employerand had to pass an apprenticeship toqualify as a member, usually sevenyears. This master fed and clothedhim and when his seven years wereup he became a journeyman workingfor wages. Guild organizations werefull of these loyal, talented anddetermined craftsmen and artisans. Therefore, they were powerful

and had great influence in citygovernment.

Here are a few questions we mustask ourselves today. What should ourguild mean to our churches, cities, and government? How can we betterrepresent our King, Jesus Christ, aswe craft the life changing songs andart that comes from a holy life given

toour

master? Why don’t we considercarefully how we throw together a

song or worship service? Why don’twe take greater care to becomingmeaningful in our churches andcommunities’ understanding thatthis is a lifelong commitment and aprivilege? Are we crafting anythingworth handing down to our childrenand their children? Do we have astandard that we are setting in place, not because we are perfectionists, but

because we understand the power andprivilege of our craft?

OK, loosen up a little bit. We aren’tperfect, but we can strive for the beauty and reflection of God ineverything we do. And we must atOikeo Music Inc.

Many songwriters do not know whatthe process is or how to be paid fororiginal worship songs, choir music or

hymns. This is accomplished by acquir-ing a Christian Copyright LicensingInternational number (CCLI#).

If you aren’t sure what a CCLI# is weare looking for the opportunity to tellyou more about your church and thelicensing process for using music.

All churches must pay licensing feesevery month so that original musiccan be legally sung in congregations

around the world. This means thatevery time your song is sung in one of these licensed churches, you receive asmall, ongoing royalty.

Oikeo Music Guild helps our membersreceive CCLI#s because we are anadministrator for CCLI.We take yourcompleted original songs and submitthem to CCLI on your behalf. Thisputs your song(s) in the CCLI song-

facing, short of dropping all otherresponsibilities and responding. If more

than one family simultaneously hadneeds of a similar nature, we would bemaxed out. We did what we could andput many other ministry responsibilitiesaside until we had ministered to thisfamily.

*A family with three children in the back seat of their car appeared at ourchurch claiming homelessness andneeding many resources: a place to live,

jobs, gas money, and food. We had noway to verify their need and we did notknow them. Again, the only ministriesavailable to meet their needs were ourfood pantry and benevolence fund.

*We helped a woman with a gift of cash from our benevolence fund whowas later convicted and imprisonedfor defrauding multiple churches forthousands of dollars. We had no way toverify the need and we did not knowher.

These are just three stories out of manywe’ve encountered over the years in ourchurch’s care ministry department.Yourchurch may have similar stories. Theyrange from needs that are legitimatethat we can barely meet with our ownresources, to a seemingly valid request

that we don’t know how to verify, tooutright fraudulent activity. How do wefunction as a Christ –centered churchwith compassion and accountability inmeeting the material needs of thosewho appeal to the church for help?

The answer is in uniting the Body of Christ to be what each church cannot  be by itself. But how can this comingtogether happen?

As I pondered and prayed about a

solution to this dilemma, I uncovereda booklet published by CrownMinistries on Benevolence Ministryin Your Church. The booklet clearlystated that a benevolence fund is apoor ministry approach to those infinancial distress. Such a fund assuagesthe church’s conscience concerningChrist’s mandate to help the sick andthe poor, but is little different thanthe governmental hand out programs

via welfare, which has generally failedWhy? The government cannot give loveNo relationships are formed, no love isattached, and no accountability to moveinto independence is provided. Overthe years our benevolence fund was themain source of our local outreach to theneedy, yet it unfortunately paralleledthe secular governmental approach tothose in need. Ouch. Church is to besalt and light, not a carbon copy of theworld’s methodologies.

The Crown Ministry brochure gave ananswer, however, it explained how awell-established, 28-year-old ministrycalled Love In the Name of Christ (LoveINC) addresses these issues through itsstructure of mobilizing the Body ofChrist, providing accountability throughverifying needs, building relationships

offering love-based outreach, utilizingvast resources of abilities and talentsof people in the pews, and being theChurch in action. I knew this was theanswer to the dilemma in our careministries department.

I Called the 800 telephone numberin the Crown Ministry brochure andrequested resources about the LoveINC approach. When I Cont. pg 22

I serve as director of care ministriesat a larger suburban congregation, mobilizing ministry resources tomeet needs. In this role, I hear aboutthe needs of members in our churchand people in the community, and

often they are heart-wrenchingstories. But what also tugs my heartis how challenged our church can beto meet all these needs. Let me sharesome examples.

*A family of five who attendedour congregation experiencedan apartment fire. Their furniturewas ruined, all of their clothingwas smoke damaged, and theirapartment was unlivable. The familyhad no financial reserves. Bothparents worked full time and would be unable to drive their children toschool if temporary housing was off the children’s school bus route. Theyturned to our church for assistance.Their need was legitimate and weknew them.

My administrative team of threemobilized to arrange temporaryhousing, find clothing, and coordinatethe children’s transportation. Wehave many ministries, but only twowere readily available to meet theircomplex needs: our food pantry andour benevolence fund. We had nosystem for immediately addressingthe other issues the family was

Five years later I came to know Jesus Christ and put my faith inHim, though I still had to learnhow to do that! Since then I’ve been blessed to sing with worshipteams at various churches and Godhelped me develop both my talentsand my confidence. I branchedout on my own in 2003 and finallyrecorded some of the Christiansongs I had written. The responsefrom people shocked me! Godactually chose me to be a vesselof healing through my music andit is still a privilege to sing, play, and write for Him. I’m currently

God began my earthly story inToronto Canada. I was born intoan authentic Italian family, andthe short of it is that no one evergave me hope or encouragementto develop my voice or followmy heart. Though the longingwas there, the confidence andfaith didn’t come until yearslater, though I did try to use mytalents singing at weddings andreceptions. In my twenties, Imoved to the Los Angeles areaand worked around musiciansat a recording studio to keep aflicker of the dream alive.

patching together pieces of songsfor a future recording, Lord-willing, but here’s what I’d like to

share from my heart today:

Quite often the Lord brings tomind several people who wereinstrumental in leading me to theLord. I hope to make an impacton someone’s life like they did inmine. God strategically placedpeople in my life who would in

turn pray for me to really know Jesus in my heart. In the ‘90’s, Iwas living in a 12-unit apartment building in North Hollywood, CA,and one of my neighbors was aman named Kirk. He lived therefor a number of years, and hadone day decided to move southto Hermosa Beach, which was

quite a ways away from the valleywhere I lived. One day before hemoved away, he asked me when Iwas going to start hanging aroundwith people of integrity. I had beenhanging around a woman whoused to live in our building and hadshown herself to be a false friendover and over. His words to me

cut like a knife and I never forgotthem. Not long afterward, I didreceive the Lord, and one day sawKirk when I was driving throughthe old stomping grounds in thevalley. I yelled out my car windowwith excitement, “Hey Kirk! I gotsaved!” He just stood there on thecorner of the street a bit stunned.

be leading the intercessory prayergroup at my church today. God isamazing. The revelation is that it isobedience that counts, and not thelevel of faith I think I have - becauseobedience is the evidence of faith.Even if that faith is as small as amustard seed God can work with

it.”

This story is part of who I amand who I want to be at thesame time. I just wanted toremind you that even whenyou think you have no faith atall, God hears your prayers.

Because other people prayed,I am now writing songs andministering through mymusic to the brokenhearted. What an amazing turn of events that has taken placein my life! Prayers don’thave to be long to be heard by our God. Kirk’s prayers

were short, to the point, andI know his heart was in theright place when he prayedthem. God heard him andas a result, I became a partof His eternal Kingdom.

Imagine what you and I cando when we really set out to prayfor someone from our hearts! I

encourage you to pray for anyoneand everyone that crosses yourpath. No one is beyond hope! Isanything too hard for the Lord? Youmay be surprised who you see inheaven, and I’m sure I will be too.

~ In His Amazing Grace,Rosanna

Then he spoke to me as clear as heever has. Not in an angry way oraccusing way but gentle, loving, powerful and firm all at the sametime. God simply said “See what Ican do even with those prayers”.And I knew what he meant by“those”. They were weak at best

and rebellious at worst but I wasstill a baby in that area so God

showed me grace.

Every time I wonder if my prayersare having any affect he brings youto mind. Who would’ve knownall those years ago what Godhad in mind and that my giftingwould be prayer and that I would

The following is a part of arecent email he sent me.

“Ro,You are my favorite “God” story.God had me pray for you allthe time and I didn’t want to. Ididn’t have “quality” faith then.God would make mepray for you but Iwould pray thingslike “God, I knowthis will probablynever happen butcould you touchRo’s heart”. That

was about it.Never more than asentence or two. ButGod persisted and Iwas the son that saidhe wouldn’t go intothe field to work butwould change hismind and go anyway.

I didn’t have thefaith but I did obey.

The day God ledme to stand onthe corner of Laurel Canyon andMoorpark Ave, not even knowingwhy I was standing there was

a telling day. When you drove by and yelled out that you had become a born again ChristianGod instantly replayed for meevery one of those patheticprayers I had prayed for you inan instant. It was amazing. Theyall flashed right before my eyes.

a way that seems right unto man, but the

end thereof are the ways of death”. Are wehearing God’s voice less and leaningtowards our own understanding. Arewe giving God our all and doing thingswith excellence? What about the newfad with church’s…non-denomination.Have we not noticed that non-

denomination is a denomination? Itwas a way to attract more Christianswho where hurt and more non- believers who looked down on otherdenominations due to hypocrisy.

God talks about the 7 Church’s inRevelation. For every church inAmerica, we all fall under one of those 7 church’s today. If you haven’tresearched them, I strongly recommend

you do. We consider Christianity thecool thing to be nowadays but are wereally being Christ-like? Have weseparated ourselves from the ways of the world or are we trying to be morelike them.

There was a time when it was hard tofind a preacher who was called by God.Today, it’s a job for over 75 percent of those who preach. They learn the talk,

educate themselves, and add titles toprove they are more knowledgeablethan others. I think people have failed torealize that God qualifies the called, Hedoesn’t call the qualified. That’s manrequirement. God knows our gifts, ourabilities, our thoughts, and our heart before we were even consumed. He isAll Mighty God, yet we forget wherewe’ve come from. Have we lost focuson what God has called us to do? I

wonder, what would happen if we tookevery ministry and for one service, turned off all projectors, sung withno music, took away the chairs andall other amenities that we’ve added? What would be the response? What if we gave no explanation? God’s wordsays, “So then because thou art lukewarm

and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit thee

out of my mouth.” (Revelation 3:16). Have

we become too comfortable? Have weforgotten what true worship really is?He loves to be worshipped. Why dochurch’s ignore each others invitationto fellowship? Are we afraid of losingmembers? Are we discriminating? Isit the music that “they listen to”? Whywon’t predominately Black church’s

fellowship with predominately Whitechurch’s? Or Asian with PacificIslanders? Or one big city-widefellowship with all church’s? Whatcauses fear? We should walk by faithand not by sight, right? What makeyou uncomfortable? Would the Spiritof the Lord not dwell there?

Even the music has changed. Inmainstream radio and in church we

hear less of the name Jesus or Christor God. But how many know thathere’s power in the name of JesusGod’s word says, demon’s tremble atthe sound of the name Jesus. So whyhave we down sized God? More andmore Christian stations are playingartist that are secular artist. It’s a bigcompromise but what is their purpose?Has this new generation become loversof self? We are but filthy rags. I knowyou’re saying, “not me… I understand. Will you be more committed to thepassion of Christ and put God backin the church, in your songs, in yourministries?

I’ve had the opportunity to be apartof various ministries around the worldfrom D.C., Alaska, North Dakota, SaudArabia, Korea, Missouri, and SouthCarolina. Through it all, God has kept

me. I know we all see or hear aboutthings that happen, especially whenyou’re a part of a ministry but what dowe do about it? Do we pray and giveit to God? Do we address those issuesOr do we continue to add fuel to thefire? Have we left our first love as Godword says? Have we looked more forself gain like bigger Church’s, bettermusicians, bigger salaries but failed to

Uncomfortable Truth

Written by E.J. McCrea

I would like to start by saying, thankyou to everyone who supports OikeoMusic. It takes a great vision and a leapof faith to trust God with something so

great. Thank you Melissa for having thefaith to believe in yourself and others.

As I began to write, please understandthat if we don’t stand for something, wewill fall for anything. I’m not writing  because of hurt but my love for theministry as a whole. The Word of Godsays, “And Jesus came and spake unto them

saying, All power is given unto me in heaven

and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach

all nations, baptizing them in the name

of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy

Ghost. Teaching them to observe all things

whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo,

I am with you always, even unto the end of

the world, Amen.” (Matthew 28:18-20).

I’ve seen a great deal of separation, discrimination, and competitionwithin the church. I witness a plethoraof competitive ministries try to outplay, out sing, out worship, out build, out teach, out preach, and out numbereach other. God’s word says, “And let us

consider one another to provoke unto love and

to good works: Not forsaking the assembling

of ourselves together, as the manner of some

is; but exhorting one another: and so much

the more, as ye see the day approaching.”

(Hebrews 10:24-25). There are church’s that select a few

ministries that fit their doctrine orpersonal specifications but fellowshipwith them alone. Some focus onprosperity and giving more thansalvation but is it for building God’sKingdom or building man’s salary? There is so much deception in today’sministries. Proverbs 16:25 says, “There is

help those in need? Why are there somany church’s but so little fellowship? I believe that we should reach all nations  but it starts from being able to toucheach other, physically, emotionally, andwith a change of heart. I hope that wecan see things more like God and bringunity back into the body of Christ. I

think growth and excellence is great butdiscrimination and separation is not.God’s word states that He’s coming forone church. Will you be a part of thatchurch? Are you still uncomfortable?

Spring Renewal

As I lift my head out of winterAnd rise out of lethargy,I can feel it everywhere

That air of expectancy!

Anything could happenWith baited breath I’m waiting.

I can feel the bubbling earthNew life is vibrating!

There it comes bursting forthIn all that springtime glory,

First gently, softly, pale and green. Each year, the same old story!

A season for new beginningsA time when hopes are bright;

A time to plant the seedsTo sow the Word and send the light!

A time to tell the storyWhat new life in Christ can bring;

That bright, expectant hopeRenewal-as in spring!

Miles McKee Grace of God

following is a great illustration of grace. In the 1800’s London had two

famous preachers, CharlesSpurgeon and Joseph Parker. Onone occasion, Parker commentedabout the poor condition of children admitted to Spurgeon’sorphanage. Word of this came toSpurgeon but by the time it arrived,it was reported to Spurgeon thatParker had criticized the orphanage

itself. Spurgeon blasted Parkerfrom his pulpit and the attackwas printed in the newspaperand became the talk of the town.Londoners flocked to Parker’schurch the next Sunday to hear hisrebuttal. Here’s what Parker said,“I understand Dr. Spurgeon is notin his pulpit today, and this is the

Sunday they use to take an offeringfor the orphanage,” Parker said. “Isuggest we take a love offering forthe orphanage.”The crowd was delighted; ushershad to empty the collection platesthree times. Later that week, therewas a knock at Parker’s study. It wasSpurgeon.

“You know, Parker, you havepracticed grace on me,” he said.“You have given me not what

I deserved; you have given mewhat I needed.”May we all have the grace tolive as though grace has indeedarrived and may we all learn howto practice grace on one another!Grace AloneMiles

As you know, the Grace of Godhas appeared in the person of  Jesus Christ, the eternal Word

made flesh. Let’s face it, ourMaster is full of grace and truthand of His fullness we haveall received grace upon grace.Literally we have received grace"piled upon" grace.Have you ever been to aseashore? Next time you areat the beach take a look at how

the seashore is subject to thecontinual arrival of wave afterwave. This is a picture of grace. Why so? Because in the gospeland because of God's goodpleasure we have received andare receiving continual waves of grace in Christ Jesus.

Jesus is the grace of God inhuman form. His grace isGlorious (Ephesians 1:6). Hisgrace is Abundant, (Acts 4:33),His grace is Rich (Ephesians 1:7)Manifold (many-sided,) (1 Peter4:10) and Sufficient (there isnever a shortage) (2Cor 12:9).

It will be a good thing to thinkon these things today! In the meantime, someonehas said it like this, ‘Mercyprevents us from getting whatwe deserved but grace hasgiven us what we need but didnot deserve.’ That's rich! The

Avalon is a new name in guitars but one with an established

history and quality heritage. The company that now bears the

name Avalon Guitars came into being in the 1980s as the Lowden

Guitar Company. Through the years, the company’s reputation

for producing the very highest quality acoustic guitars was widely

acknowledged, although production remained small. The highly

skilled team of craftsmen also grew in stature as their experience

and know-how developed. Avalon guitars are all about their

contribution to the acoustic guitar world and their statement

about acoustic guitar design, quality and above all, tone. The very

heart and pure anatomy of today’s Avalon guitar is bred from

many years of traditional craftsmanship and love for guitar music.

Discovering an Avalon guitar is like finding a long-lost friend;

from the moment you meet it feels immediately, comfortable,

reliable and truly rewarding; developing a bond and trust which is

consistent and always inspirational.

Today’s Avalon guitar represents a true heritage that has been

defined by some of the world’s greatest craftsmen and artists. The

Legacy Series, in its Premier Series and Custom Shop derivatives

provide truly peerless quality and performance. That “played-in”

feel manifests in abundance and underlines the feeling of long-

standing friendship.

Today’s Avalon guitar is the culmination of decades of creativity

and musical excellence; a true representation of the Luthier’s art.

Lindsey spoke to them abouttheirself-esteemand howto find itthroughGod’seyes. Shetalkedto themaboutseeing

themselves holistically theway God looks at us instead of compartmentalizing our bodies.Lindsey used a basketball togive an example of how we tendto section ourselves, but whenyou twirl the ball the sectionsdisappear. The visual was uniqueand simple yet the way Lindseyspoke to the students wasimpacting.

During the week she sang at acoffee shop, two churches, the

women’s prison, and recordedwith our guild, interviewed atthe local radio station KAFC93.7FM, raised funds for buildingwater wells in Sudan at the AlaskaWild Berry Theatre, and spentthe day at Alyeska Ski Resort

with 25 of our songwriters guildmembers. Everywhere we wentLindsey used scripture to inspirea message of being a genuineChristian.

Lindsey says she was most pleasedwith the response at our women’sprison, Hiland Mt CorrectionalFacility. The ladies respondedto Lindsey’s humor right away.

asked where the ministryheadquarters was located, to mysurprise I learned it was in our TwinCities metropolitan area!

I began the process described in the

materials the Love INC NationalHeadquarters provided Cont. on pg

22to form a development committeefor establishing our non-profit 501(c) (3) affiliate. I learned that it was  best to keep the activities of ouraffiliate geographically contained ina workable area for those needinghelp. Churches offering ministrycould not be counties apart, asthose receiving ministry could not

realistically drive long distances.

Even with the clear descriptionsof the Love INC model from thematerials, I did not yet have theexperiential sense of what a fully-functioning Love INC looked like. Isit just like a parachute organization? Is it like a social service organization? Can’t the church just tap into whatis already in the community andrefer the needy to them? Why inventanother structure to serve the poor? The jetliner took off and I spent a24-hour whirlwind “vision trip” totwo mature, functioning Love INCaffiliates in the Grand Rapids area toanswer these questions.

What I saw and experienced was  bigger and more comprehensive

than I had imagined from thewritten materials about Love INC.I saw church-connected volunteersfrom many denominations withlove in their eyes and hearts, energized to make a difference inthe lives of people in need whomthey cared about and with whomthey were committed to staythe course. Norma Berens, the

executive director of the Love INCin Hudsonville, MI, showed us howthey were offering a “hand up” out of poverty and financial crisis, rather thana “hand out” with continued failureafterwards. I saw people in compassionministry modeled by Jesus.

Eric Morgan, the executive directorof Love INC of the Tri-Cities in GrandHaven, MI, shared a common occurancein the single mom ministry that touchedmy heart. Every single mom in thatcommunity who needs a crib gets onefree. As the female volunteer makes thedelivery, she asks the single mom if shecan take her out for coffee in a few days just to talk. Invariably, the single mom

breaks down in tears because someonewants to connect with her relationallyand not just be a do-gooder pushing anitem at her for a feel good experiencefor the volunteer. Relationships areformed and mentoring in Jesus canunfold.

Eric said that he has a waiting list of volunteers. Those who are currentlyactive guard their shifts. (If they go

on vacation, they make it clear thesubstitutes will step aside when theyreturn!) The volunteers I met wereobviously fulfilled, have a sense of  belonging, and see they are making adifference in people’s lives. They aretaking time to connect with peopleto develop relationships, rather thanmerely giving a box of food or a bedor a car and having no further contact. It is all about relationships, souls, and Jesus Christ-not only about things.

One church I met on our “vision trip”had declining numbers involved inministry until Love INC was instituted.Due to the relational component of Love INC, the church experienced adramatic increase of members involvednot only in Love INC, but in the otherministries if the church.

The Michigan Love INC’s were utilizingthe talents and gifts of believers who never  believed their assets could be used for theLord. Typical volunteer slots in churchesutilize musicians, ushers, Sunday Schooteachers, bulletin stuffers, small groupleaders, lay counselors, nursery attendants

greeters, etc. How about using the followingroles for Christ in direct ministry: butchershairstylists, retail store display designersgas station owners, accountants, computer“geeks”, bicycle technicians, watchmakersshoemakers, warehouse owners, taxpreparers, and many, many more? Peoplewith these talents and resources are directlyin service to Christ as they contribute toLove INC ministry and touch the needy in

their midst. This provides a natural platformfor sharing the reason why they are servingwhich is to be Jesus to them, to introducethem to Him, and to invite them into thechurch community. I saw this in action inMichigan.

Can this be done here in the Greater TwinCities? Of course, if our vision is as big asGod’s and as big as Love INC’s track recordwith the Lord at the helm. What is keeping

us back? We are limited because we don’thave a Kingdom vision. We as churches dogreat work within our own circumscribed  boundaries. However, the Lord’s work community wide, nationwide, worldwideIt knows no boundaries. As we unite inthe name of Jesus to offer what we can inministry involving the bigger whole of theBody of Christ, we are embracing the Lord’sKingdom vision and will Cont on pg 27

Pastor’s PerspectiveSuccess In Ministry

BY

 Jack Aiken

Every pastor, evangelist, singer, songwriter and author wants to succeed intheir ministry, but all too often we havea view of success that is more related tothe world’s value system than to God’s.When I entered the pastoral ministryover 20 years ago I had a distorted viewof what success in ministry would mean.I dreamed of being a rising pastoral star, leading a burgeoning congregation, whileremaining the humble servant who would,

of course, give all the glory to God. Whata bunch of egotistical nonsense that dreamturned out to be!

Thankfully, none of these ego-driven fantasies have came true, and astime has passed, I have come to a clearerunderstanding of what God’s prioritiesare for His ministers and how He definessuccess.

First, God’s priority for Hisministers is not the pursuit of a ministry,or even worse, the pursuit of success in a

ministry. God wants us to seek Him. Ourfirst order of business must be to knowGod and develop a deep intimacy withHim. Jesus said “Seek rst the kingdom of

God and His righteousness, and all these things

will be added unto you.”  We generally applythis principle to the necessity of pursuingthe spiritual aspects of life in preferenceto the material, however, this principlewould seem to apply to ministry as well.Paraphrasing the scripture we could say,“Seek first the God of the ministry, andthe ministry of God will be given to you,as He wills”.

Seeking success in ministry, orthrough ministry, without seeking Godas a matter of first priority, has lead manya minister, prominent or not, to disasterthrough pride. When ministry successcomes faster than the development of theminister’s character, disaster is inevitable.

Second, God defines successas faithfulness. The most important by-

product of knowing God’s nature andcharacter is that the seeker will also beginto know God’s will as it specifically appliesto himself. Every Christian has some

understanding of God’s will for worldevangelism and discipleship of believers,  but what is not always clear is theindividuals specific role in God’s masterplan. However,God is more anxious toreveal His will to us than we are to haveit revealed. God wants us to know whatHe desires of us, and we can know bythe simple expedient of asking Him. Themain reason we don’t hear God’s answeris because we have already predeterminedwhat the answer must be. In order toknow God’s will, we must be open to allpossibilities. No one will ever be successfulin God’s eyes without knowing and doingHis will.

Everyone who is faithful to obeywill be considered successful even if suchobedience holds the minister in a placeof obscurity rather than thrusting himupon the world stage. In God’s eyes, bothare equally successful and the heavenlyreward will be exactly the same: “Well

done you good and faithful servant, enterinto the joys of your Lord.” God rewardsobedience, not prominence.

Third, I have come to realize thata minister’s greatest impact or success inthe ministry, may not be a direct result of his own efforts, but through the ministryof those he has empowered for ministry.

It is a good thing to encouragesomeone to seek God and wait on Himto open doors for them, but if you arealready established in a ministry, God may

be looking to you to open the door of ministry to others.

I am in ministry today becausesomeone recognized the gifts and callingsof God in my life, and encouraged meto develop them. This encourager  became my mentor, giving me manysignificant opportunities to exercise mygifts while they were yet immature andundeveloped.

The greatest accomplishment of

John the Baptist was the introduction o Jesus to the Jewish people. Jesus raised upa cadre of disciples whom He prophesiedwould do even greater things than He had

done.Barnabas stands as a shining

example of one who recognized andpromoted the gifts and calling of anotherPaul, the apostle, did not come intoprominence in the church until Barnabasresponding to the leading of the HolySpirit, sought him out, and brought himto Antioch from his hometown of TarsusOver time, Barnabas slipped into obscuritywhile Paul became the greatest Christianmissionary-evangelist and teacher theworld has ever known. Paul, in turnraised up a legion of other ministers toshare and carry on his work.

None of these mentors viewedthose God called alongside as competitorsThey recognized them as the means bywhich God would enable their own workto be expanded. If we who currentlyhold the reins of ministry could take thesame attitude, we would realize that ourgreatest potential for success may lie in the

raising up of others to share the ministrywe now hold. Those we mentor shouldnever be viewed as competition, but acontinuation.

To sum it all up, successfuministry always comes out of intimacywith God. Faithful obedience to the will oGod is God’s ultimate definition of successThe will of God will almost always includeinvesting freely in the ministry of others.

Christopher Jorge Drummer to Drummer

Drummer to Drummer: Playing

Dynamically

By Christopher Jorge

A band member I have played with formany years recently gave me one of the best compliments I have ever received as adrummer. He said, “I really appreciate yoursensitivity to what other members of the band are playing. You play what the musicrequires. In fact, you sometimes underplaya tune”. I pondered this comment andthought, “What is sensitivity in a musicalcontext?” I came to the conclusion that whatwe are really talking about is dynamics.

In this article I want to define what dynamicmusic is, and provide practical ways inwhich a drummer (or any musician /singer) might grasp a dynamic approach totheir gift. From a drummer’s perspective,I feel that honing this skill is much moreimportant than just learning to play fasteror more precisely.

Most of the venues I have played at overthe years have not been large. Beingable to adjust dynamically to the playing

environment is criticalto the band’s overallsound. As drummersand musicians, we

need to complementthe songs, notoverpower them. Adrummer’s primary  job is to keep the  band’s clock tickingin time, but nobodylikes a loud obnoxiousclock! To illustrate thedynamics concept, let’s start with two

analogies.Look at the design of a roller coaster. Whatis its goal? To makeyour legs wobble, spityou out, and buildanticipation to do

it all over again. This is accomplished bya combination of turns, lifts, and drops.Once in a while a huge gut-wrenchingdrop or whiplash turn is thrown in to mixit up. This is effective because it builds andreleases tension and also adds a measureof unpredictability. Would the ride be justas fun if it just went down, or only turnedthe whole time? The second time you takethat ride you would know what to expect. The mystery and thrill are gone. Do yousee where I am going with this? Musically, there needs to be a variety of style, volume, and tempo to give a song life. This is truewhether you are recording music or playinglive. Dynamics are a critical part of music,

and a large part of being a well-roundedmusician.

And what if a song were described in colors?Let’s say that the melody and tempo are black and white. Dynamic playing gives this black and white song not only shades of gray,  but other colors too. Without dynamics,a song is sterile...mechanical...flat. Witha dynamic approach, a vocalist can hold  back, then let it all out at key moments.Instruments ebb and flow, punctuating key

musical points and counterpoints. Theseare the tunes that make the hair on myneck stand up. A dynamic song can make anemotional, and many times a very spiritua

connection. It is a very cool thing.

I was talking to a recording engineer friendof mine about how these dynamic qualitiesare so often lost these days in a lot of thehighly processed / radio friendly CD’s thatare produced. Songs are squashed by studioprocessing and compression just to makethem sound very uniform and LOUD. Theyare then compressed again when broadcaston the radio or made into an MP3. Theresult? They are loud, sonically flat, and

lacking emotion. From nearly the beginningof the song, the dynamic roller coaster igoing nowhere. Could this be one reasonwhy many current songs tunes lack reastaying power? They sound good for a brietime, but then lose their appeal, like audiocotton candy. While many current radiofriendly songs may be a bit more than just  black and white, most are certainly not full color audio experience, in my opinionAs drummers and as musicians, let’s notlet this happen. When playing live, allowyourself and all the other band members tohave space in the mix just for them.

What techniques and / or skills are neededto be a dynamic musician? I know that fora long time I thought any request for meto play dynamically was code for “You’replaying too loud!”. I now know this is nottrue. More than likely they wanted somesensitivity, some variation in the grooves was using. It is not merely adjusting youroverall playing volume, but also varying

the dynamics in your playing all througha song. Remember that along with theoverall dynamics, you also have controof the volume of each and every hit onyour kit. Every note can (and should) bedynamic. Adjusting the pattern of thesedynamic changes with any of your limbs ona rhythm you are playing is what makes asimple mechanical drum beat turn into areal groove…YOUR groove. Let’s move onnow to a few practical tips:

the Sheep and Goats, is both one of themost frightening and one of the mostmotivating and exciting passages of

scriptures that I know. Jesus is talkingabout the final judgment and how Hewill separate the sheep (good) fromthe goats (bad) as they stand before Histhrone. The core criteria in this passagethat distinguishes a sheep from a goat iswhether or not this person gave drink

to the thirsty, fedthe hungry, clothed thenaked, visited

those in prisonand showedhospitality tothe strangeror homeless. To those whodidn’t do thosethings, He saysthese terrifying

words “Depart from me, I never knew

you!” Those are words that I neverwant to hear - or to have anyone elsehear, but there’s more to this story. When both the sheep and the goats askthe Lord, when did they do or not dothese things, the Lord says, “As muchas you did or did not do for the leastof these my brethren, you did or didnot do for Me.” This is a big revelationto both the sheep and the goats in thisstory. But fortunately, you and I get the

benefit of reading this story and takingit’s message to heart before we everhave to hear any of this first hand.

Hungry For More Of You?By Dan Adler

I’ve noticed that a trend in a lot of modern worship services is to havea lot of seeking songs - songs like“Hungry”, “We are Hungry”, “All Whoare Thirsty”, “Rend the Heavens”,“Let it Rain”, “More Love, MorePower” and many otherslike them. I sing many of those songs regularly andI really do like them. Butonce in a while, in someservices I’m in, songs likethat can almost feel emptyor despairing – sort of likewe’re waiting for somethingto happen to us that mayor may not come true. It’slike we have nothing we cando but sing about it or prayabout it and if nothing happens after

that service, we’re sort of absolvedfrom responsibility about our lack. Now don’t get me wrong, I think it’sa really good thing to have a hungerfor more of the presence and powerof God in our lives. So I would neverdiscourage singing songs like these. But I think we might want to lookat some Biblical passages that couldenlighten us on our journey of seekingand that, perhaps, might inspire us

regarding the songs we choose orwrite for our worship services.

Matthew 25:31-46, the parable of

So here’s the big application forworshipers who are hungry for moreof Him. If you really want to get close

to Jesus, serve Jesus and love Jesus,According to this passage, the mostdirect way you can do that is to feedthe hungry, clothe the naked, visit theprisoner and house the homeless. Indoing so you are feeding, clothing, housing and visiting Jesus Himself!!Wow! What a concept! Just thinkhow many worship services havegreat sound systems and great guitarplayers and great bands and passionate

singers singing songs seeking for moreof Jesus, but never do any of thosethings as part of their own lives or thelife of their congregation! That’s a bitof a sobering thought isn’t it? But onthe other hand, look at the awesomeopportunities all around us to loveand bless and serve Jesus every day!!My understanding is that this passagewas the primary motivator behindthe life of Mother Theresa and shefound profound closeness to Christ inserving the poorest of the poor.

This month’s Oikeo magazine isfeaturing an article about Love INC(in the name of Christ). This greatnational ministry is effectively gettingchurches in cities and towns aroundthe country to work together in unityto minister to the poor. Our Heart

of the City Worship band has had theprivilege to partner with Love INC atmany of their national conferences.

Last Summer I wrote a song for their“Sound Off” youth initiative called “It’sAbout Time” that Oikeo featured recently. If you and your church or worship bandaren’t already involved in initiatives thatminister to the poor, I highly recommendthis ministry as a starting place. I’mhungry for Jesus to say to me that whenHe was hungry and naked and homelessand imprisoned, I, as one of His sheep, found Him and served Him as an act of worship as I ministered to the poor.

Keyboards  Jake Hillman

30 Front Yard Worship

Following the Leader

By Jake Hillman

I have been reading articles formusicians and worship leaders fora while now. All of them have hadsome awesome information onleading worship, being a Christianmusician and instrumental worship. As a keyboard player, I usually look forarticles on… well, keyboarding. I havethe utmost respect for those who have been willing to share their knowledgewith the rest of us who, lets admit,

really, really need it. Although thereis always great information aboutways to use my instrument to createcool sounds, support the band, andkey progressions, I began seeing aconsistent pattern of articles focusedon skill. While I believe that skill isextremely important (see my articlein the last issue of Front Yard) thereis one element that tends to getoverlooked or passed by, and that

is our ability to lead people intoworship just by playing to God.

Lately, I have really focused on whatit means to be a worship leader. I have been on worship teams since I was 13years old. Now, I’m no senior citizen, but that really was a long time ago…for me. Ever since I started playingon a worship team with my dad at

the helm, I have always thought of aworship leader as someone who usesan instrument, whether it be theirvoice or something they play, as ashepherd’s rod to lead the sheep intoworship. To me, leading worship meantthat someone had to stand in front of the congregation and present songsfor people to sing in order for them toenter into worship, like a pilot flyinga plane, or a captain steering a ship.

However, I am happy to say that this viewhas recently been changed.

Being in a support position on our

worship team, I began paying attentionto the contribution I make to worshipand how that contribution reinforcescorporate worship. I started to breakdown the elements of worship and thepart I played in creating an overall soundthat, somehow, encouraged people toopen their mouths and raise their handto sing to the Most High. Over time,

I began to get frustrated with myself  because I just could not understand howthis all worked. Sure, I liked playing thepiano and keys and creating music andplaying with other musicians. But, sodoes my dad every Saturday night at thelocal night spot, and believe me, that is awhole different kind of worship.

Then one night at my wife’s and myfavorite restaurant, a couple from ourchurch came up to our table. After somesmall talk, the wife looked at me and saidhow much she enjoys hearing me play.As usual, I thanked her for her kindnessand told her that I enjoy using my giftsfor the Lord. Then she said that she didnot only like to hear the keys or piano in

the song, but loves it when I quietly playin those quiet moments when our pastoris praying or giving an alter call. Shealso said that there was something about

the way I played that kept the worshipmoving. Embarrassed, I just thankedher again and told her that she was onlyhearing the way I worship. With a gleamin her eye, she said, “That must be it,then.”

It took a while to realize what she meant by that, until it hit me like a ton of

bricks. If there were a light bulb overmy head, it would have exploded!

I realized that, when I worship theLord, people want to follow. It wasn’tabout my pedestal or piano stool, orabout being up on stage or playingwith a great Piano/Pad sound I foundlast week in the church’s keyboard. Itwas about worshiping Christ in such away that people wanted to follow meinto that worship. From that point, worship has taken on a whole newmeaning. I see the worship team as agroup of Christians who just want toworship God together. Our job is not

to show off our gifts and talents, but touse them to give glory to the One whogave those gifts to us. Then, as we usethose gifts together as a unified team, people will join and follow us into Hisglory, creating corporate worship. Christis our leader! Just as people waved palm branches, laid down their garments on

Help for your Music Dept.

At Christ Church, we've been using music from iClub since our firstservice last June. With around 15 people, we don't have any musicians,

so we rely heavily upon good music to worship with during our services.Basically, we worship to soundtracks by putting together a playlist iniTunes. At first, we were very self conscious about that, but we realizedthat if most clubs around town were dancing and partying to a DJ'srecords, then we could worship to soundtracks. We jokingly tell peoplewe have "world class" musicians lead our services. Quite frankly, it hasworked very effectively for us, and now that we're used to it, we can tellvery little difference in the worship between our service and others withlive music.iClub has been a tremendous resource for us because of all the optionsthat it provides. Whenever a new song comes out, I download themusic-only version to use during our welcome, prayer and offering, and just before the preaching. We download the full demo for worship, and the split track for our altar calls. We take the lead sheets and/ortransparency downloads and use them to project the words in Keynote(the Mac version of PowerPoint). We've created four playlists for our service. 1. Pre-Service: song forprayer and to create the atmosphere. 2. Worship Service 3. Altar Service:we have several songs styles depending on mood leading into altar 4.Last Service: this is an archive of what songs we've recently used Ourtypical playlist for worship service looks like this: 1. Intro/Welcome: I

Want to Praise You-Music Only 2. I Want to Praise You-Demo 3. DanceBefore You-Demo 4. Prayer: Dance Before You-Music Only 5. Offering:Rain Lord-Music Only 6. Rain Lord-Demo 7. Preaching Into: RainLord-Music Only (fade out)Basically, we hit play and let'er go. We have a portable PA system wegot from David Hutton in Asheboro, and we run the output into oursoundboard. There have even been times, that without a computer, we'vesimply run it from an iPod, and it has worked just as well.I guess I said all that to say, "Thank you." Thank you for the powerfulresources you've made available to us to have a quality Spirit-filledworship experience for our church.

How can you commit, recognize, invent

and brainstorm together!

Commitment

“If you do not totally commit to what you

are doing, you will probably bail the rst

time adversity rocks your world. Those

who stay in the boat and row eventuallymake it to shore”

whether it be a group or an indi-

vidual.

 Apologize

 Humble yourself

Contrast

Use a do/don’t statement

Example: “The last thing I•

wanted to do was communi-

cate that I don’t value your

songs. I think you are very

talented.”

Remember however, that we

should never do someone the

disfavor of being dishonest with

them. This is where discretion

comes into play. We have learned

to consider each individual and

where they are at, and in each situ-

ation, there is ALWAYS something

 positive about that individual and

their talent that we can draw at-tention to while still encouraging

excellence in their craft.

Commit, Recognize, Invent,

Brainstorm

Commit to the purpose

Recognize the strategy

Invent a mutual goal

Brainstorm new strategies to-

gether

Exercise:

Think of one talented individual you

know and ask yourself if you really care

about their gifts

A Safe Place To Share

GROUP PURPOSE

The rst rule of safety is group purpose. If everyone is working

toward the same goal of great song

crafting and can be assured that

the others have the same goals,

interests and values, you have the

beginning of a healthy climate for

trust building. To help you de-

termine whether you have group

 purpose, ask these questions:

Do others believe I care about•their songs?

Do others trust my motives?•

What do I want from me?•

What do I want from them?•

What do I want for the rela-•

tionship?

Unfortunately as artist’s, songwrit-

er’s and musician’s, we seem to

struggle in this area. Many times

when we do not like what we hear,

dialogue comes to a halt and con-

versation becomes unsafe.

This brings us to the second rule of

safety:

GROUP RESPECT

The instant others perceive disre-

spect, the evaluation or conversa-

tion is derailed from it’s original

intent: to craft great songs!

Here are three skills that restore

respect and purpose in any setting

public. CFG publications and databasescover private foundations, corporatefoundations, community foundationsand other grantmaking public charities.Obtaining Grants: Grantmakersusually fund nonprofit organizationsthat qualify for public charity statusunder section 501(c)(3) of theInternal Revenue Code. To qualify, the organization’s purpose must be

charitable, educational, scientific, religious, literary, or cultural. Publicschools, libraries, and other governmentorganizations may also qualify as publiccharities.Furthermore, public charities:

•cannotbenefitprivateindividuals;and

•arerestrictedintheirinfluenceon

legislation or political campaigns.Funders generally do not make grants

to ministries and other organizationswhose tax-exempt status is notfinalized; most will request proof of nonprofit status before they consideran application. Under federal law, foundations may make grants to non-qualifying individuals and organizationsif the foundations follow very specific

rules. The rules regarding expenditureresponsibility require foundations to filvarious reports certifying that the fundwere spent solely for the charitablepurposes specified in the grant.Individual grantseekers should considerpursuing affiliation with an eligible(tax-exempt) organization. In such anarrangement, the affiliate organizationacts as a sponsor or fiscal agent for your

project. For further information, clickhere.Desirable Grantseeker Attributes: Grantmakers seek to determinewhether the purpose of an organizationor project is in sync with its mission orobjectives. They will also look for thefollowing:Most importantly, foundationsdetermine whether the purpose of anorganization or project is compatible

with their specific mission;Evidence that it is reputable in thecommunity;Competent and committed employeesand board members;A viable project budget;Evidence that the program ororganization addresses an existing

problem;Successfully obtaining grants in the past;Evidence of financial competency; anda history of successful recruitment of volunteers. Some foundations only support well-established churches and ministries.Check each foundation’s guidelines

and recent grantmaking using the CFGdatabase. This will help you determinewhether a foundation supports neworganizations.Types of Funding Given By

Grantmakers:

The projects and organizationsgrantmakers will fund vary dramatically. Some give any kind of support;others only extend building support,

scholarships, or fund specific projects/activities. The CFG database providesyou with information about the areaseach foundation funds. Look at the“Types of Funding” index in the printand electronic databases. Due toongoing commitments, foundationssometimes limit the number of newproposals they will accept. Funders donot want grant recipients perpetuallydependent on them.

Insider Help:Generally, knowing someone insidethe organization, such as an officer, board member, or even an employee,is helpful. However, it is unwise toput pressure on those who will reviewyour proposal. The best thing youcan do is demonstrate the credibilityof your organization and project. If afoundation states that it does not acceptunsolicited grant requests, explore thepossibility that someone familiar withyour organization is also affiliated withthe foundation. If this is unsuccessful, consider the challenge of attracting thefoundation’s interest over time.Beginning Your Foundation SearchSearching within CFG’s database, compile a list of foundations that appearlikely to support your organization orproject. Select funders by examining

their descriptive profiles and recentgiving histories. Consider foundationsthat: (1) have historically supportedsimilar projects; (2) have awardedthe type of support you seek; (3) arepresent in your geographic area; and/or (4) you are affiliated with throughsomeone on your board.

The next step is to thoroughlyresearch the funders you identify. Toresearch a foundation’s grantmakingpatterns and trends, explore thefoundation’s website. You may alsolook at its annual reports, Form990, and printed guidelines. Diligentresearch pays off in two ways: first,it may save you from submitting aproposal to a funder who will not even

consider your proposal; second, it willhelp you draft a better (well informed)proposal. Even if your proposal is notaccepted, you want to leave a goodimpression. Next time, the result may be different. You will increase your chances of success by using the following threeapproaches in your research:The subject approach identifiesgrantmakers that have funded, or

expressed an interest in funding, programs in your specific subjectfield. Examples of different subjects

include: the Bible, children, education,or mission work. The geographic approach identifiesfoundations that fund programs ina particular city, state, or region.Although some may give nationally orinternationally, many grantmakers limitgiving to specific geographic areas.

The support type approach identifiesfoundations that provide specifictypes of support. Examples include: building funds, scholarships, or generaloperating support.By combining two or more of theseapproaches, your chances of successmay be even greater. For example, if your program involves building homesfor missionaries in Haiti, you may want

to start by searching for foundationsthat have made grants for: mission work(subject), building shelters or homes(support type), and work in Haiti(geographic). Before Drafting the Proposal:

Although drafting your proposal is animportant part of the grantseekingprocess, be mindful that far more timeand effort should be spent in developingthe project itself.

Making a Beginning: Describe yourprogram in great detail; make sure you

Podcast God Cares About Art

36 Front Yard Worship

Hi, my name is Rich Irwin. I’ma ministry leader at AnchorageCity Church and these areencouraging words for Artist’s.

God cares about art. I want youto read that again, God caresabout art. Geneses 1:1 “In the beginning God created theheavens and the earth.” I haveto tell you that slaps me aroundevery time I read it.

Look around....we’re makingcopies of His work all the time.No one is a better or more

prolific artist.

Check His use of color, composition, technique. If you can write a better ormore powerful song than thereverberation of every star in theuniverse then by all means stepup to see if you have what it takes

because, God cares about art.Look at the caring detail He givesto the direction of the makingof the Tabernacle, or the templeSolomon built. I encourage youto re-read the description of theconstruction of the Tabernaclein the book of Exodus. God wasvery specific about how it should be designed and built. I likethis little blurb that God says toMoses, Exodus 27:8 says “Youshall make it hollow with planksas it was shown to you on themountain, so shall they make it.”Get it? God showed Moses howto make the altar. He showed himhow to make the altar!

Man....that totally changes howI ask God to help me when I’m

writing a song or drawing apicture. “God, could You show melike You showed Moses?”Thanks for reading this. You canreach me at

Assembly of these various elementsinto a well-organized proposal isdescribed in the Proposal WritingCourse.Submitting the Proposal: A Step-

by-step Approach:

I. First Steps

Increasingly, grantmakers arerequesting brief letters of inquiry

addressing how well your proposaland their interests correspond. Aletter of inquiry should include-toa lesser extent-all the elements of a proposal. It should only be twopages, and should indicate what thenext step will be (for example, thatyou will follow up with a phone callin 10 days). The objective of a letterof inquiry is to capture the funder’sinterest so he requests a proposal. In some cases, foundations supplydetailed instructions about what yourproposal should include.Follow them. Some groups of grantmakers such as regionalassociations (i.e. Minnesota Councilon Foundations) and the NationalNetwork of Grantmakers are nowendorsing common grant applicationforms that grantseekers may (or must)

use when submitting proposals.Although it is unlikely that you willsend the same proposal to multiplefoundations on your list, you shouldconsider creating a “master proposal”for your project or organization. Thismay save time, as you can simplycustomize it for each prospective

funder.II. Useful Guidelines for the

Master Proposal

Make it well organized and concise.Use headings and sub-headings whereappropriate. Use dark type on brightwhite paper. Do not bind-use clips orstaples.Use page numbers. If the proposalis long enough, provide a table of

contents.Use charts and statistics asappropriate, but realize they candisrupt the flow of the narrative. Placefootnotes on the same page, not at theend of the document.Include only important attachments, press releases, news clippings, resumes, and appendices.III. Stylistic Approach

When drafting the proposal, consider

the beneficiaries point of view. Thisespecially applies to the Problem andPlan sections.Avoid using jargon, slang, oracronyms. If you do, provideexplanations.Use short, succinct sentences; norambling run-ons. Keep paragraphsshort.Use the active voice wheneverpractical. You may use abbreviations asappropriate. However, excessiveabbreviation may lead to confusion ordistraction.IV. Application Procedures

Each grantmaker establishes its ownapplication deadlines. Read and followthem closely. A missed deadline couldrender your proposal worthless. After a proposal is submitted it may

be several months before a decision ismade. Also, it may take several weeksafter notification of the grant to receivethe funds. Therefore, it is in your bestinterest to submit your proposal upto a year in advance of your proposedstart date. When submitting the same proposal to

multiple grantmakers, inform them of the other grantmakers considering theproposal.Always address your cover letter toan individual. If you cannot obtain thecorrect individual’s name from CFG, call the foundation. Verify the spellingof names and addresses.Do not fax or e-mail your proposalwithout determining that this is

acceptable. At this time, very fewgrant proposals are accepted via fax ore-mail.Double check to be sure all requestedattachments are included. Commonlyrequested attachments include:

A copy of your organization’s•

501(c)(3) determination letterfrom the IRS;A list of your organization’s board•

members and their professionalaffiliations;A copy of your organization’s•

budget and most recent audit;A brochure describing your agency•
