    NAEC FLASHBACK

  • For over 60 years, Gunderlin Ltd, Inc. has been manufacturing high-quality standard and custom elevator cabs, entrances and door panels. Gunderlin is a second generation family-owned and operated company with the third generation onboard. Based in Hialeah, FL, Gunderlin’s work can be seen in every state across the United States and internationally across North and South America, the Caribbean, Europe, the Middle East and Asia.

Gunderlin began as a small woodshop creating furniture and manufacturing window shutters with a handful of employees. Gunderlin’s founder, Kal Bass, is best described as an entrepreneur at heart who became interested in the growing elevator industry. He quickly discovered that in the 1950’s between Miami and New York there were few companies in the elevator cab and entrance manufacturing business. Kal saw the opportunity to fill this need and shifted his company’s focus, making the rest history.

Today, with over 150 employees and 110,000 square feet of manufacturing space, Gunderlin uses state-of-the-art technology and facilities to accommodate the various stages of elevator cab and entrance fabrication. These stages include, but are not limited to, the latest in high tech punch presses, lasers with auto load and unload features, top of the line press brakes and a powder paint system providing baked on finishes.

A combined sales staff with 100+ years of experience and an engineering department with 200+ years of combined experience positions Gunderlin as a highly respected leader in the industry. Gunderlin is often called upon by customers, consultants and designers to help with technical issues and to assist in resolving a range of issues from the forming and welding of basic metals to assisting in the design of deep acid-etched architectural metals.

In 2015, Gunderlin manufactured Richard Artschwager’s Six in Four elevator exhibit for the new Whitney Museum. A behind-the-scenes video of Gunderlin’s role in the creation of the exhibit can be viewed at https://youtu.be/gtopu6ikQhk.

    Recent Notable projects:

    • Whitney Museum New York, NY • Wilshire Grand Center Los Angeles, CA • 30 Hudson Yards New York, NY • San Diego County Courthouse San Diego, CA • Children’s Health Care of Philadelphia Philadelphia, PA • 220 Central Park South New York, NY

DME Elevators & Lifts has been proudly serving their customers for more than 40 years. Established in 1977 as DME Shoppe, the company started as a durable medical equipment business offering mobility scooters in the Chicagoland area. Quickly recognizing customers’ needs for additional ways to make life more accessible, DME Shoppe expanded their offerings to include wheelchairs, custom seating and accessibility lift products. Their customers depended on DME to provide reliable, safe home solutions, making DME the go-to company for accessibility needs.

With the Americans with Disabilities Act in the early 1990s, the demand for accessibility lifts grew exponentially. That’s when DME Elevators & Lifts installed their first high profile commercial wheelchair lift, located in the announcers’ booth at the Chicago Cub’s Wrigley Field. From that point forward DME focused solely on accessibility lifts, providing commercial and residential lifting equipment such as wheelchair lifts, elevators, stair lifts, ceiling lifts and dumbwaiters.

    wirerope works, inc.

Wirerope Works, Inc. utilizes low and high carbon rod as raw material which is first drawn into wire, then stranded and closed to produce a variety of finished wire rope products. This product transition is accomplished by over 350 Union and non union employees at its facilities with the highest quality control present at every process stage. Many of our employees are second and third generation family members. All of our employees are tasked with the mission statement to “Exceed the Need”. Both of

our manufacturing facilities are ISO-9001 and API Q1 certified.

The quality products manufactured are supplied to five major markets:

Mining ropes up to 5” diameter are supplied to surface mining operations and hoist ropes over 5000 ft long are produced for underground mining applications.

General purpose wire ropes from 1/4” to 4” diameters are sup-plied through distributors as slings or crane hoist ropes to the construction industry.

Oil, Gas and Marine ropes are supplied to both land and off shore drilling rigs and platforms.

Structural bridge ropes and strands are supplied up to 6” diameters for suspension bridges, floating bridges, tower guys, fabric stadium roofs, and various other applications requiring guying systems.

Our products have been used on many high profile applications such as the hoist ropes on the St. Louis Arch or the Willis Tower (Sears Tower). We provide the same high level of quality for a common sling rope as we do to high wire used by Nik Wallenda to traverse Niagara Falls Gorge and the Grand Canyon.

In addition to our quality products we provide hundreds of years of experience and support, which is available through our field engineers, regional sales representatives, and customer service personnel. We are also supported by a network of experienced distributors with inventory through out the United States, and Canada to ensure quality and timely service.

    McKinley

McKinley Elevator is a distributor, installer and service provider of accessibility equipment such as home elevators, wheelchair lifts, dumbwaiters and car lifts throughout California, Nevada and Arizona.

Our company was founded by Bill McKinley in 1948 as a returning Marine officer entering the materials handling field. The initial company he founded was our sister company McKinley Equipment. Bill was a handshake type of guy, both with customers and the manufacturers he agreed to represent. This allowed the company to grow while garnering a reputation as a quality supplier and installer of respected, top-of-the-line products.

It was determined that focusing the company on its technical expertise regardless of the type of product was the best way to leverage opportunities and grow as the economy in the USA grew. That competency is in Mechanical and Hydraulic Expertise, and this expertise continues to attract the best manufacturers to McKinley.

    ELEVATOR

By the 1980’s, the expertise in these crucial areas paved the way to bring on a new line of handicap and accessibility lifts. The enactment of the American with Disabilities Act drove demand and growth all through the 1990’s.

Clients trusted the McKinley name and continued to do so throughout the 2000’s as we enhanced our offerings with home elevators manufactured by the same companies as the accessibility lifts and other leaders.

By the mid 2000’s, the McKinley Elevator Division was doing nearly as much business as the McKinley Equipment Division. It only made sense to give each division their own identity by allowing them to operate more independently. So in 2005, McKinley Elevator was incorporated as its own entity.

Headquartered in Irvine, California, McKinley Elevator represents such nationally recognized names as Garaventa Lifts, Pneumatic Vacuum Elevator, Waupaca Elevator, Bruno Stairway Lifts, and Matot Dumbwaiters as providers of the strongest of choices

in each product category. The company maintains showrooms in Irvine, CA and Hayward, CA to support the needs of our customers.

This year we are celebrating our 70th year of existence. The McKinley Companies are still attributing one source as the core reason for its longevity – the dedicated employees who are the heart of the company. They are the reason we are often told we are the most trusted in our marketplace.

NCEIG is an educational body consisting of professionals from, and those who are interested in, the elevator industry.

NCEIG’s mission is to apprise members of code changes and updates as well as general industry information. Meetings provide networking opportunities between members.

Our meetings are now held on the third Wednesday of each month (except June-August). In August, we hold our NCEIG Golf Tournament. Our September meeting date may vary, or be canceled, depending on whether it conflicts with the NAEC Convention.

    PAST MEETINGS RECAP

January 17, 2018 Speaker: Matthew Yelland - Peelle DoorDoor Protection Safety

The NCEIG January meeting was well attended with a nice mix of suppliers, elevator contractors and consultants. Probably 20+ in attendance. The presentation focused squarely on safety as per the plan to provide valuable information for the membership rather than a sales pitch. Comments were made that a lot of suppliers agree to this but few follow through with it, meaning that they end up just pitching the product. There were engaging questions asked from the membership about the presentation and then after more specifically about Peelle. There was value to Peelle present-ing from our standpoint based on brand recognition, relationship building and the gathering of industry/market intelligence.

February 21, 2018 Speaker: William Polk & Tom C. Hausenbauer, P.E. - MEI Total Elevator SolutionsHydraulic Elevator Performance: Problems and Solutions

The NCEIG February meeting had great attendance. The presentation sparked good conversation around some of the issues concerning hydraulic elevator problems and solutions and the discussion around hot oil was intrigueing and seem to be a subject of conern for contractors and consultants. “Presenting is a great opportunity to network with fellow industry collegues and stay informed on current market conditions.” - William Polk

ATTENTIONCANADIAN MEMBERSThe Minister of Government and Consumer Services, the Honourable Tracy MacCharles, introduced the Access to Consumer Credit Reports and Elevator Availability Act, 2018, in the Ontario legislature yesterday. The bill aims to give consumers easier access to credit information and improving access to elevators.

The proposed changes would require certain credit reporting agencies to:

    • Give consumers online access to their current consumer score at least twice a year, free of charge;

    • Include in a consumer report information about any consumer scores given to third parties in the past 12 months;

    • Implement a credit freeze, at the request of a consumer to help reduce identity theft.

The proposed changes to the Technical Standards and Safety Act, 2000, outlined in the province’s elevator availability action plan, would make Ontario a world leader with standards for repair timelines. Better enforcement of maintenance rules would also improve public safety.

You can read the bill and follow its progress on the Legislative Assembly of Ontario website. www.ontla.on.ca

For any questions regarding consumer credit reports, please send an email to [email protected].

For any questions specific to elevator availability, please send an email to [email protected].

Nidec acquired Canton Elevator in 2016 as part of its ever-expanding portfolio of companies. Canton Elevator is one of the leading hydraulic elevator manufacturers in the U.S.

Mr. Nagamori makes it a point to visit all Nidec subsidiaries across the globe to tour the facilities, personally meet the employees and welcome them into the family. Nidec has 318 companies globally and employs more than 120,000 people.

Speaking to the assembled employees, Mr. Nagamori presented his vision of the future for Canton Elevator. He expects growth will be driven by a combination of Canton’s decades of experience and customer trust in Canton branded products, together with Nidec’s strengths in non-proprietary elevator components, financial strength and global presence.

A Q/A session followed, and many employees asked questions about Mr. Nagamori, Canton Elevator and what they could be doing to improve an already solid company. From the welders to the management team, all were impressed with Mr. Nagamori, Nidec and where Canton Elevator is going in the future.

    Adams Safe-T-Lock Monitoring SysteM

    DOB COMPLIANT

Adams Elevator Equipment Company’s Safe-T-Lock Monitoring System assists building owners and service providers with satisfying the New York City Building Code 3.10.12 Appendix K.

As of January 1, 2020, all existing elevators in New York City with automatic coupled doors, including those opposite a manual swing panel, must be equipped with a system that monitors the door contact circuits and prevents automatic operation when the circuits fail or there is a conflict in the condition of the contacts.

The Adams Safe-T-Lock Monitor brings intelligent monitoring to any make of elevator, providing complete protection against automatic car operation due to faulty or shorted door contact circuits, divergent car gate switches and hoistway door lock signals. It includes a terminal block system to easily interface the intelligent monitoring system in existing installations and increase the overall safety of transportation systems.

This product was designed with versatility in mind and is compatible with most equipment. Fault codes are conveniently provided by the programmable logic controller, making it easy to determine the cause of the issue.

Both the elevator code requirement and the Adams Safe-T-Lock’s intelligent monitoring system help to protect passengers like never before. For more information, visit http://adamselevator.com/safe-t-lock.

By January 1, 2020, in order to be compliant with the Building Code, all NYC elevators must provide a means to monitor and prevent automatic operation when a faulty Door Contact circuit is detected. While some are working address this issue, others seem to be hoping for an extension,

which is an uncertain proposition at best.In 1978 GAL patented the industry’s first

door and gate monitoring system, since that time the design has evolved to become the FM1. The latest FM1 has been engineered to work with most elevator control platforms operating today regardless of base technology or manufacturer. By upgrading

your existing controller with the FM1 you are able to meet the code requirement without the expense of a full modernization. If you’re uncertain what your own situation requires, please call GAL and let us provide you with a solution tailored to ensure your clients’ compliance with the new Code.

But make no mistake, the deadline is rapidly approaching and delaying action now could create hardships for your clients, impediments to passengers, and costly headaches for you quite soon.

    MEMORIAMS

Louis “Lou” Blaiotta, Sr., founder and chairman of Columbia Elevator Products Co., Inc., died peacefully on March 1, 2018 at Calvary Hospital in the Bronx, New York. Blaiotta was born to immigrant parents on November 11, 1932, in East Harlem in New York City.

In 1958, Blaiot ta became National Sales Manager of

the Williamsburg Elevator Products Division. In the mid 1960s, he presented his employers, the Katz family, with a “different” concept of marketing elevator entrances and cabs to independent elevator contractors, but the Katzes did not accept it, so he pursued his concept on his own. This resulted in the formation of Columbia. Williamsburg served as Columbia’s primary source of door panels for its first eight years. His company went on from humble beginnings as a 10,000-sq.-ft. facility in Port Chester, New York, to become one of North America’s largest independent elevator architectural products manufacturers.

Blaiotta was a member of the NAESA International Advisory Board and an active participant in ANSI/ASME A17 activities. He served on the Main, Hoistway and Code Coordinating committees and was elected to a Lifetime Honorary Membership on the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Main Committee. Other affiliations included memberships in the International Association of Elevator Engineers, the National Fire Protection Association and an advisory board position for Underwriters Laboratories’ Standards & Technical Panel. In 1991, Blaiotta received the prestigious NAEC Distinguished Service Award (now the William C. Sturgeon Distinguished Service Award) for his technical and philanthropic contributions to the elevator industry and, in 2013, was presented by NAEC with honorary lifetime membership, at the time only one of three the association had ever awarded.

Blaiotta is survived by his wife of 64 years, Marie, three children and three grandchildren: Margaret Gilhooley and daughter, Maria; Dione Birdsall and son, Dillon; and Louis “L.J.” Blaiotta, Jr. and daughter, Alexandra. L.J. Blaiotta, CEO of Columbia Elevator, said:

We Will Miss You! “Aside from my father’s professional and community achievements, he never forgot his humble roots as a poor orphan boy from East Harlem, and, throughout his life, remained a principled fighter for the

little guy. On behalf of the Blaiotta family, the hundreds of employees

who worked with him at Columbia over the past half century and the

thousands of those employees’ family members whose lives he may

have positively impacted, I feel it is this legacy that all of us at Columbia

will miss most about Lou Blaiotta.”
