The Liberal Studies program is a unique,
multidisciplinary major offered only in the Adult
Degree Program. Allowing students to choose from
across the spectrum of courses offered by the
college, this program is a flexible, self-designed
option for ADP students.
Student of the Month! From our Charlotte Campus:
Karen McFeeters is an ADP student at Belmont
Abbey College’s Charlotte campus for
continuing education.
“I wanted to go back and finish my degree for
years. It was that feeling of unfinished
business,” Karen said. After completing somecollege coursework and working for several
years, Karen felt it was the right time to be a
student again. “I was inspired by the example
of my mother who went back to school and
completed her GED when she was in her
forties,” Karen explained.
A resident of Charlotte, Karen made the
decision to enroll at the then newly opened
Charlotte sector of the Adult Degree program.
“I wouldn’t have been able to be in the
program if it weren’t for the Charlotte campus, the closer location made it possible for me to
go back and finish my degree,” Karen
affirmed.

“I would recommend the Liberal Arts Program for
those students who are interested in studying multiple
subjects and who need maximum flexibility in meeting
their credit hours,” said Dr. Beth Kreitzer, director of
the program. While students in the Liberal Studies
program have to fulfill the core requirements of thecollege, they have greater independence than in other
majors in choosing the classes they need to meet the
remainder of their credit hours. For this reason the
program is “well suited for students who bring in
transfer credits,” Dr. Kreitzer added, “because they
can design a program of study which will include
those credits and count them towards graduating with
a Liberal Studies degree.” Students who can only take
courses at night will still be able to complete a Liberal
Studies degree, and many students find that they
appreciate the option of combining courses in thehumanities, social sciences, education, and/or business
into one major.
“We currently have 48 majors,” noted Dr. Kreitzer,
“and the program continues to grow.”

Benedictine Hallmarks
1.). Love of Christ and neighbor
Love is at the heart ofBenedictine monastic life. Thelife of the monastic, like that ofall Christians, is first andforemost a response to God'sastonishing love forhumankind, a love expressedin the free gift of his belovedSon, Jesus Christ. Benedictuses Jesus' own words whichcome from the heart of theHebrew scriptures to urgemonastics to ground their lives
in a whole-hearted response tothat love and to share it freelywith others (RB 4.1-2)
Student of the Month continued.
Majoring in business management, Karen said she
hopes to expand her resume and increase the variety
of her qualifications for the job market. When asked about her experience as a
Charlotte ADP student, Karen remarked that one of
her favorite aspects of the program is the “greatcamaraderie among the students. It is a tight nit
group which makes learning in classroom very
enjoyable.” Karen also added that she appreciates
the diversity among her fellow students, many of
whom she has come to know personally.
“We are all so grateful for the Charlotte campus for
making it possible for us to be in the program,” saidKaren.

1. Exercise Boosts Brainpower
“Not only does exercise improve your body,it helps your mental function,” says certifiedtrainer David Atkinson.

Helpful Strategies in a Programof Adult Learning:
http://www.studygs.net/adulted.htm
Write out your goals and expected timecommitments. This will be helpful in avoiding
stress and over-scheduling yourself.
Establish a good rapport with your
instructors/professors in the classes you take.
This will be helpful in negotiating optional
learning projects
that have more relevance to your situation and
goals.
Develop an awareness of how you learn, orhave learned best in the past;
This will help you focus your energies in the
most productive way,
and alert you to areas where you may need help
(i.e. speaking, writing, math, testing, etc.)
Your learning style defines how you acquire
and process information (learn!)
and has nothing to do with being "smart." You
could refer to it as to how your brain works, or
the parts of your brain work. Each person has avery particular way of learning. Research has
identified many "learner characteristics" and
ways of typing them.
