Dear People-made-righteous-by-grace,
I remember seeing a magician at work and being amazed at the contradictory things that happened. I was reminded of that this morning as I drove behind another car along a stretch of road that has no driveways or exits. I was a
little disturbed at how slow that car was being driven but there was no way to pass. So, I just settled my self to wait the 2 miles to the turn-off. Suddenly I realized that car was nowhere to be seen – it had vanished! I still can’t explain where it went. Now, the magician I saw was trying to teach us that magic is illusion. And so he told us not to watch him but to watch the bird on the table. I tried but the next thing I knew the bird had simply vanished. He said he would try it again only this time he would put a screen in front of himself so he couldn’t distract us. This time when the ‘magic’ words were said an ordinary looking man walked in, picked up the bird and walked out. How had I missed that twice before?
Jesus’ parables can be like that only more so. Two parables that seem to me now to require concentration beyond the obvious are the Prodigal Son and the Laborers in the Vineyard. Now the illusion begins with the titles scripture editors have chosen to give these stories. To say it is the Son who is prodigal is to blind oneself to the possibility that it is the Father who is prodigal. To say the story is about the Laborers is to identify with them and focus on their emotions instead of on the motives of the vineyard owner.
In the Prodigal story the son can’t wait for his father’s death. He takes his “share” and wastes it to the point of poverty. Finally remembering his father, he comes home in disgrace. The father has not written his son off. He watches for him everyday. He sees the son returning from a great distance. Knowing the
villagers will berate his son for wanting his father dead, the father hoists up his robe and runs (men of property and age never ran or showed their legs). He stops his son’s apology; he hugs him, clothes him, honors him and throws a party for him. The father is the one who is prodigal and it is love that makes him so.
In the Vineyard story we are not really being asked to make a judgment about the fairness of the pay received. Rather it is about the owner’s concern and love for everyone who would like to earn a living. His generosity is not to annoy those who worked the whole day, it was based on his regard for the need of the workers who had not been hired. They too had families to feed, bills to pay, children who got sick, and wives to love. Now, after all these years of being a preacher, this parable is saying something new to me. It is saying God’s generosity to those who have no claim is an expression of God’s love and it is for all those he created. The good news is that God loves us because we need God’s love not because we have earned it.
All this talk about God’s generosity is leading somewhere. It is leading to my asking you to make your giving to the church this year be based not on a sense of obligation or budget expectation, but to be an expression of generosity and love back to God who loves you.

A Season of Music Lenten Noontime Organ Recitals Wednesdays, March 4, March 11, March 18, March 25 and April 1, 2015 12:00 - 12:30 p.m. The spectacular Ruffatti pipe organ is featured in six Lenten organ recitals offered by our Director of Music, Dr. Brice Gerlach. In these informal concerts Brice takes the time to explain some of the mechanical workings of the organ and offers some musical insights about the pieces on the program.
After the recital, the audience is invited to the console to ask questions and to see the beautiful woodwork and craftsmanship of the Ruffatti. Tours of the pipe chambers are also offered each week. Please join us for some beautiful organ music, personal reflection, a meal and study to celebrate this holy season. Each recital will be followed by a boxed lunch sponsored by various committees and groups of FPCN. A Bible Study, led by Dr. Will Browne, will take place following lunch. All are welcome to attend.
The Naples Philharmonic Naples Philharmonic Chorus Ave Maria University Chamber Choir Dr. Timothy McDonnell, conductor
Sunday, March 29, 2015 4:00 p.m.
The Naples Philharmonic along with the Naples Philharmonic Chorus and the Ave Maria University Chamber Choir present Joseph Haydn’s oratorio The Creation. Dr. Timothy McDonnell is the conductor of this special joint event. Haydn’s monumental work The Creation was inspired by Handel’s Messiah which Haydn heard on a visit to England. The piece is divided into three parts and depicts the creation of the world. Each new creation, light, water, landscapes, plants and beasts of land, sea and air are depicted with lavish tone painting. The third part focuses on the happy union of Adam and Eve. The Creation is widely considered Haydn’s crowning masterpiece. This concert will spotlight a trio of soloists in addition to the combined choirs and orchestra. You will not want to miss this wonderful event. This is a ticketed event and tickets must be purchased through the box office at Artis-Naples or at the door on the afternoon of the concert.

STEPHEN
MINISTRY
Stephen Ministers are
members of the
congregation who have
committed themselves to 50 hours of
training and two years of active
participation in the Stephen Ministry
program.
Once a Stephen Minister is trained and commissioned by the congregation, they are assigned a care-receiver, someone like you and me, who may need a confidant and friend to help work through an issue or event we’d rather not have to walk through alone.
Stephen Ministers do not offer advice or make decisions for the person with whom they are in a caring relationship. They listen. They ask clarifying questions. They pray with and for you. They stay present with you until you feel you are able to make good choices and resume a life of personal peace on your own.

The Christian Education and Mission committees are partnering up for an amazing event. Relay for Life will be held at Gulf View Middle School on Friday, April 17 through Saturday, April 18. This year, First Presbyterian Church of Naples will sponsor a booth to help raise money for cancer research. We are looking for hand-made items to sell at our booth. These items can include, but are certainly not limited to: crocheted items, art, crafts, and anything else made with care and love. If you would like to participate but, like myself, cannot make anything, please contact me and join the team to walk, or staff our booth to meet and greet and help sell these items. This will be the first booth we have had at this event in a while and I would love for us to have a large showing.
Let’s all come together in support of this worthy cause.
Ski trip The youth will be participating in a fun Spring Break
event. Eighteen students and five chaperones are
registered to attend this trip to North Carolina.
Please keep everyone is your prayers for safe travels
and safe activities during this fun-tastic Youth Group
trip.
First Fridays/Parents Night Out Our theme for the upcoming March 6 “First Fridays” night is “Finding Nemo” and we are bursting with children! We have 43 children registered, and have several families placed on a waiting list. If you love working with children and would like to volunteer for this evening of fun please contact Shana.
Family Outing March 23 our families will be heading over to the Miami Metro Zoo. The bus will leave the Church parking lot at 9 a.m. and return by 4 p.m. The cost for this grand adventure will only be $10 per person, and lunch will be included! Registration is required, and space is limited so please contact Shana to reserve your space.

There is a difference between a preschool program and a quality preschool program. Quality is not
defined solely by the equipment and materials your program offers, but must also include highly educated and dedicated staff. As a grandparent was leaving the Preschool last week, she made a comment about how special the staff at First Presbyterian Preschool is. I completely agree that we have an amazing staff. Unfortunately, many of you do not know our staff so I would like to take the next few months to introduce our staff to you. Each month I will feature
a different age group, starting with our youngest classes. Ms. Claudia and Ms. Nicki are the teachers in our youngest class, the 18 to 24 month olds.
Claudia Schembri began her career with FPP in August 2012. She began first as a teacher’s assistant and then decided to explore the joys of teaching. She obtained her National Early Childhood Credential in June 2014. Both of her sons were a part of FPP before going to Kindergarten. Nicki Birrell Jentgen also joined FPP in August 2012. Both of her children were enrolled at FPP when Nicki began working with us. She has worked
with a variety of ages during her time with us including the VPK and three year old classes. Both of Nicki’s children are now in elementary school, but fortunately she chose to stay with FPP and further her career.
Our two year old class is led by Ms. Christie and Ms. Chrissy. Christie Bandit has been with FPP for 7 years (since September 2007). She
began working here when her youngest daughter was 2 years old and a student in our program. Christie has an AS degree with a number of classes in the child development/early childhood education. Chrissy Adams is in her inaugural year at FPP. Her daughter finished our VPK program last year and her son is enrolled in the VPK program this year. Chrissy also serves as an accountant and has recently worked with Mason Academy as they begin their new school. We are so blessed to have all these staff with us. The efforts of our staff are what keep families returning or referring our program to others. We are already looking forward to next year! Next month, I will introduce the 3 year old teaching staff.

Mision Peniel is a Presbyterian ministry in Immokalee where people are poor, hungry, tired, living in very poor housing with far too many other people, and sometimes sold into slavery. It’s hard to believe this goes on so close to us. Pastor Miguel is a cheerful soul who seeks to guide, protect, and minister to these people. And our
church helps him along with the rest of Peace River Presbytery. We had the most amazing trip on February 6 working at
Mision Peniel. Fifteen good and righteous souls boarded our beautiful church bus and spent the afternoon serving 669 hot meals, giving out additional groceries to 40 others after the food ran out, and
handing out barrels of men’s clothing and shoes. We worked together so well you would have thought we had practiced it!
John Bunyan, the author of Pilgrim’s Progress, wrote, “You have not lived today until you have done something for someone who cannot pay you back.” God didn’t call His people to come together just to get blessed, but to be a blessing to someone else. His people are us--here at First Presbyterian Church of Naples--coming
together to do for others. When you see a man who will accept a pair of house slippers to work in because they are better than the shoes he is wearing as we did last Friday, it gives you pause.
By the time you read this, we also will have completed the Meals of Hope project and I’ll let you know next time how many packages we filled which will be distributed to food pantries locally. Thank you for participating.
Relay for Life through the American
Cancer Society will be held on Friday, April 17 across the street from our church at Gulf View Middle School. I hope that you will support and participate in this event.
And look below for our Spring Mission Tour set for March 26. We will go again to our local agencies so if you weren’t able to make it last November, please sign up. It will inspire you.
We pray as our stewardship campaign is underway that everyone invests in our beautiful church and its mission. What we are able to do as this community (FPC) is important and blessed. I know I’m not the only one who is hoping that we grow, and are able to support our chosen agencies with more dollars, more hands-on work, and more prayer.
