Now is the time to catch that dream bass you have been thinking about all winter long. Fork’s big females will be in shallow water areas either spawning or preparing to spawn. There will be two patterns in March, stag-ing bass and spawning bass. During and after cold fronts when water temperature takes a dip staging bass are your best bet. They will be less affected after cold fronts. Staging bass can be found on main lake points, sec-

ondary points, major creek bends and major breaklines closest to shore. The upper ends warm up first because shal-low water warms faster, as does turbid water. Since most bass inhabit shallow water dur-ing spring most lures that work in this depth will produce. Lure colors will depend on wa-ter clarity and sky conditions. One thing you can count on is the bite will be excellent one day and have you wonder-ing where all the bass went the next. With the weather changing daily you must be mobile to consistently stay on fish. It can be eighty degrees one day and freezing the next. Another thing you can count on is the wind. When water temperatures are above fifty-eight degrees, wind becomes an advantage. With colder water conditions it can be a dis-advantage. You need to look for areas that are protected from heavy winds. You must change your fishing tactics with the chang-ing weather conditions. There will be different stages of spawn from one end of the lake to the other. There will be spawning, pre-spawn, and post-spawn bass from the middle to the end of March. One thing you can be sure of is that most bass will be in shallow water and will hit

a wide variety of lures. Figuring out what stage most of the bass are in is the key to consistently catching them. Pre- and post-spawn bass will be more aggressive and hit a wide variety of lures. Spinner baits and shallow crank baits are top for these bass. Bass that are thinking more about spawning require a much slower movements you will know what to throw. I’ll be happy to help make your fishing trip a successful one. Just give me a call at 903-383-7214 (landline), 903-850-5083 (mo-bile) or email me at [email protected] plus I still have openings for March and springtime. Good luck and good fishing! The following items are compiled from recent Texas Parks and Wildlife Department law enforcement re-ports.--Know Your Outdoor Annual-- A Zapata County game warden responded to a call about a group pos-sibly hunting dove before the start of the special white-winged dove season. The warden arrived at the suspect-ed location and saw the hunters shoot birds, pack up and leave the field. The warden made contact with the group about 10 minutes before the noon legal shooting time of the season and counted 47 dove in the hunt-ers’ possession. One of the hunters showed the warden his copy of the Outdoor Annual and said nowhere in the annual does it mention the times to shoot during the special white-winged dove season. The warden turned the Outdoor Annual to the appropriate page and ad-vised the hunter to read a section of the page out loud. “Shooting hours: noon to sunset,” the hunter said. The hunter apologized for hunting before the start of the season, saying he didn’t see the times earlier. The war-den issued multiple citations and seized the 47 dove.--Jug Hunting-- While patrolling Falcon Lake for water safety violations during a bass tournament, two game wardens were heading to the south end of the lake when they saw a floating blue jug on the U.S. side of the lake. The wardens pulled the jug from the water and saw that it had no markings, though an illegal hoop

net was attached to it. A short distance from the first jug, the wardens found a second jug with another hoop net. The wardens pulled this device from the water as well. Because both nets were empty, no fish were lost to the illegal devices.--Wardens Always Win at Hide and Seek-- After several visits to a sunflower field where he thought il-legal hunting might be taking place, a La Salle County game warden finally heard shots coming from the field on a Sunday evening, well after legal shooting hours. The warden made his way into the field, following the sound of gunshots. The warden found two hunters with only a few birds. However, the warden saw evidence of another hunter who was nowhere to be found. After several minutes of questioning, one hunter confessed a third hunter was hiding because he did not have a hunt-ing license. The hunter also confessed he and his friends had made several trips back to their lodge to drop off birds so they could continue to hunt. Eventually, the warden found the third hunter and seized 43 doves. The warden filed charges for being over the daily bag limit, hunting after legal hours and hunting without a hunting license.--Chasing the Deer-- A Crosby County game warden was dispatched to the scene of an injured deer in a re-mote part of the county. Upon arriving at the scene, the warden couldn’t find the deer, though he did see a car

parked on the side of the road nearby. When the warden contacted the car’s occupants, they told him a dump truck pulling a large track loader on a flatbed trailer had stopped and loaded up the deer minutes earlier. Head-ing in the direction the car’s occupants had indicated, the warden was able to catch up to the dump truck at a local gas station. The warden contacted the driver of the truck and ultimately located the deer, which was tied to the trailer behind the tracks of the loader. The warden took the deer as evidence and cited the driver for the unlawful possession of deer during a closed season.--Looking for a Dime but Found a Quarter-- While checking dove hunters for violations, two Cameron County game wardens heard shots from behind a rural residence. As they tried to locate the hunters behind the residence, the wardens noticed the suspects in a garage with a large amount of marijuana. The wardens de-tained the suspects and called in another warden and his K9 partner. The K9 assisted in locating a large amount of cocaine and marijuana in the garage, as well as two rifles with the serial numbers filed off. After more searching, the wardens discovered the house was actu-ally a stash house. The residents of the house received drugs from Mexico and repacked them for shipment across the United States.--Into the Night-- As two Val Verde County game war-

dens conducted their nightly patrol, they came upon a vehicle that failed to stay in its lane. While the game wardens tried to read the vehicle’s license plate, the ve-hicle quickly accelerated and almost lost control of the car on a curve. The wardens activated their emergency lights to stop the vehicle, but it only went faster. After following the vehicle for a short time, the wardens saw the vehicle stop and the driver disappear into the dark-ness. The wardens pulled up beside the vehicle and se-cured the scene. However, when back up arrived, they were unable to find the driver. The wardens impounded the vehicle and the case is pending further investigation.--It’s Your Own Fault--As a Hudspeth County game warden patrolled an area of the Rio Grande River, he encountered some waterfowl hunters. After talking with the hunters for a few minutes, the warden discov-ered that one of the individuals did not have a valid hunting license. The hunter admitted to taking several birds. When the warden asked him why he didn’t have a license, the hunter tried to blame an El Paso sporting goods store for not issuing him a proper license. When the warden questioned the other hunters, he found they all had the correct licenses, state stamps and federal duck stamps, all of which were issued by the same El Paso sporting goods store. The warden found an ille-gally taken coot and three cormorants in the unlicensed hunter’s possession. The warden issued citations for the violations and civil restitution is pending.--A Little Too Late--A Henderson County game war-

den received a call from a pump technician who was checking well sites about a man dragging a deer off private property to a nearby wooded area. When the hunter noticed the pump technician, he ran to a nearby house and jumped into a truck and sped off. The war-den arrived at the house and talked to a woman who lived there. She said her husband just left for town to buy tractor parts. When the man returned to his house a few minutes later, he denied hunting or being on the private property. However, he then said he shot a buck on his property, but the buck jumped the fence to the private property, so he simply went to retrieve it. After the warden questioned him some more, the man con-fessed to shooting the deer on the private property. He said he got scared when he saw the pump technician, so he left the scene quickly to buy a hunting license in case a game warden showed up. Cases and civil restitution are pending.--Crossbow Hunters- A Fort Bend County game war-den was patrolling a neighborhood still under develop-ment when he saw two trucks using their headlights to spotlight deer off the road. The warden let the trucks get close to his location, where a few deer were feed-ing next to him, and saw one occupant shoot at a deer with a crossbow. The warden then pulled both vehicles over and found two occupants in one truck, both with crossbows, and one occupant in the other truck, with his own crossbow. During the warden’s investigation, he found the suspects had tree stands and deer feeders

in place along the road, all without the landowner’s consent. The warden filed six charges on the three

suspects. No deer were harmed.

Add New Flavor to St. Patrick’s Day CelebrationsBy Sue Hampton

Known primarily as an exuberant, colorful celebra-tion of Irish heritage, St. Patrick’s Day is actually a day of religious observation taking place during Lent and commemorating the work of St. Patrick to convert pagan Celts throughout Ireland. Simply put, everyone’s Irish on St. Patrick’s Day, and for many, the very mention of the holiday is enough to bring to mind images of Kelly green and leprechauns. How-ever, you don’t have to limit your celebrations to corned beef and Guinness. Add this pan-fried salmon with a tart

relish made from aromatic sorrel, apples and scallions to your menu. Pan-Fried Salmon With Sorrel, Apple and Scal-lion Relish(Serves 4) (Many people regard sor-rel only as an herb, but the leaves can be used for salads, soups and sauces as well as in egg and fish dishes. Its high acidity causes it to discolor when it is cooked in iron pots or when chopped with a non-stainless-steel knife.)4 - four to six-ounce salm-on fillets, boneless and skinlessSalt and freshly ground black pepper, to tasteJuice of one whole lemon1 tablespoon of vegetable oil4 tablespoons butter, di-vided2 Granny Smith apples, diced small1 bunch scallions, chopped

1 small bunch sorrel, shredded (about eight leaves)1 teaspoon chopped pars-ley1 lemon sliced, for garnish1. Dry salmon on paper towels and season with salt, pepper and lemon juice.2. Add 1 tablespoon vege-table oil and 2 tablespoons butter to a large skillet and heat over medium-high heat. Place the salmon fillets (presentation side down) on the hot skillet. Fry until golden brown, turning at least twice.3. In a separate saucepan, gently cook over medium heat in the remaining but-ter the diced apples and scallions (spring onions), about 2 minutes. Divide among 4 plates.4. Place the cooked salm-on fillets on top. Presentation: Sprinkle shredded sorrel and

Presentation: Sprinkle shredded sorrel and

chopped parsley over the salmon. Garnish with sliced or quartered lemon

wedges. Enjoy!!
