E lections for 2015 were concluded at the 2015 Annual Meeting of the Members February 15. The following

results were announced: President, Reginald Chester; Vice-President, Kevin Finnegan; Secretary, Roger S. Austin; Treasurer, Lee W. Dezell; Three-Year Term Trustees, Jo-seph A. Finnegan and Art Knauf, Jr.; to complete the pre-sent 3-year term of Kevin Finnegan, Connie J. Martin; and One-Year Term Trustee, Alan L. Garrand. Former Presi-dent Alan Garrand thanked out-going Trustees Wayne Day, Chuck Goolden, Wayne Hill, and Bill Pharoah for their excellent service during the past several years. I n the pages that follow are the names of the many members and friends whose generosity made

construction of new facilities possible, greatly ex-panded our collection, and supported the exhibitions and other activities. It might seem we keep nagging about donations, but without them the Museum would not be what it is. Think a contribution might be too small? Large donors and granting agencies will ask if the community supports us. We are glad that our an-swer continues to be a resounding, “Sure does!”

New Board Seated at Annual Meet

Collections Get a Real Boost This Winter

E ric Warner has been appointed Chair of the Collection Management Committee, filling a critical vacancy. A new computer has been pur-

chased to replace the old one. Warner is in the process of transferring all col-lection software and records to the new computer. He suggests that when new items are donated to the Museum they should be tagged and given a number with other pertinent information including a photo to make it easier to keep track of each item. This information will be placed in a book for a permanent record and then entered into the computer. Celina Patterson is serving as an intern at the Museum. She is a senior at SUNY Potsdam, majoring in Art History with a minor in Museum Studies. She has been working closely with Shirley Dickinson, identifying and labeling collection items. Warner is showing her how to catalog items using PastPerfect software. She and Roger Austin are reviewing current law regarding museum collections in order to update our Collection Management Policies. Learning while working is the key.

Association for Living History, Farm and Agricultural Museums: Provided our first lead to the Harden Collection. Mort Backus and Sons, Ogdensburg: Loaned a trailer to help haul Harden Collection items. C&M Dairy - Chester and Moulton Families: Use of their lift to help put siding on the Antique Tractor Building. The Frame Mill, Potsdam: Donated framing for the unique poster Racing to the Franklin County Fair. Gypsum Express, Syracuse: Had a truck and driver ready to help move the Harden Collection if needed. Haggett Excavating and Equipment Rental: Loaned a lift so we could paint the Antique Tractor Building. Honey Dew Acres (Peggy Cambridge), Canton: Again brought ponies and provided the very popular pony rides at the June Show. KT Power, Inc. (Bill and Marcia Tiernan), Waddington: Provided a crane operated by Gary Thomas at bargain prices for the sew-age line project. Kelly Farms, Rensselaer Falls: Loaned their Kobelco excavator for the sewage line project. Kunoco IGA, Waddington: Donated several cases of water. LaValley Transportation, Inc. (Randy LaValley), Potsdam: Provided a triailer truck and driver to help move the Harden Collection and then loaned two trailers to store several items. LeBerge and Curtis (Jim, Duane, and Ron Curtis), Canton: Loaned their JD 544G front loader for the sewage line project and a trailer to haul items from the Harden Collection. Madrid Rescue Squad: Rescued a heat-exhausted volunteer and stood by for emergencies at the exhibitions. Town of Madrid: Provided its Community Center and offices for meetings. Madrid Volunteer Fire Department: Provided fire protection at our exhibitions. Mid-State Golf Cars, Canton: Generously loaned us several Golf Cars to help those needing rides during exhibitions. Jim Mitchell, Sawyer: Sawed the lumber used to side the Antique Tractor Building. Northern NY Community Foundation: Manages the Museum’s endowment fund. Seaway Timber Harvesting, Inc. (Pat Curran), Massena: Donated logs which were sawn and used to side the Tractor Building. R&S Construction (Robert and Bernard Reed): The bargain transport of the Kelly Farms Kobelco. Willis Shattuck, Auctioneer, Dekalb Junction: Once again provided tents for weather protection and comfort at the exhibitions. St. Lawrence Nurseries (Bill MacKentley), Potsdam: Donated trees for the apple orchard and provided instructions for planting. Gary Sayer Farm, Madrid: Our farming neighbor spread hay on the newly seeded ground for the sewage line project. Tupper Maple - Ken and Jean Tupper: Provided tractor service to build roads, create the base for the Tractor Building, and grade and rake the sewage line excavation. United Church of Madrid: Served an excellent dinner at the Annual Banquet. Walmart (Potsdam and Ogdensburg): Donation of the bike for the raffle and items for the silent auction. White’s Farm Supply, Canastota: Loan of a Skid Steer to help load the Harden Collection.

2014 Construction and Project Fund Donors

D uring 2014 over 100 members and friends expressed their confidence in the Museum through donations of cash or in-kind goods and services. The value of these donations exceeded $100,000. Among them were substantial gifts

received as memorials to friends and family. This generosity and thoughtfulness has enabled Museum projects to move forward and to do so with no debt. With virtually no fund-raising costs, all proceeds directly benefit the Museum.

Log Cabin Relocation On Track

Junior Members Are Important

A t the Hutchinson Farm in 2007, Frank and Elaine McDonald’s grandson, Seth McDonald, became a Junior Member of the Museum at age 2. He

had such a good time at last year’s Fall Exhibition (now age 9) that his grand-parents asked him what were the ten things he liked best about the show. He replied: 1) riding and driving the 4-wheeler, 2) driving the tractor, 3) tractor parade, 4) hanging out, 5) spending time with family, 6) visiting exhibits, 7) watching people have fun, 8) meeting new people, 9) meeting all the cool ven-dors, and 10) being a member. The gift of a Junior Membership is a great bar-gain at just $5.00. The recipient will receive the Newsletter and can take pride in sharing the Museum’s mission with all our members. We are seeking spe-cial programs for Junior Members that will be fun and instructive. If you would like to teach kite flying, show how the old gas engines run, demonstrate how to hitch up a horse, or present any other program, just contact any of the Board members listed on the last page. Kids’ programs can be fun. Help build the next generation of members. Your support is needed.

I n the previous issue of the Newsletter, plans for moving the Log Cabin in-volved total disassembly of the building. Following the offer of a local truck-

ing company, plans are now being made to move the building largely intact. It may be necessary to remove the roof, but these details will be worked out. Work will still begin the second week of May with the removal of the kitchen and cellar shed additions and the chimney. Bracing the walls will follow. Vol-unteers whether skilled or not are still needed. Come and learn with us. Con-tact Roger Austin if interested. Contact information is on the last page.

Programs Needed to Support the Community Even before his recent election as President, Reg Chester has been urging the Board and members of the Museum to make better use of its facilities. Over a year ago he said, “The community has helped us build great facilities. It’s time we developed programs to give something back.” From May through October, two exhibitions are planned as well as Open Houses every 2nd and 4th Saturday of each month. We need to add special programs that will be instructive and fun. Ideas presented so far include how the old engines oper-ate, firing up the steam engine, restoring tractors, kite flying, canning, how maple syrup is made, one-room school days, hitching up the horse, and rais-ing chickens. While more ideas are welcome, leaders are needed. Programs can be for any or all ages, a few hours or all day long. Most of the Museum’s facilities may be used. Pick a topic and date and call Reg or the Secretary. Contact information is on the last page. Why not do it right now?

The 33rd Annual Antique Gas & Steam Engine Exhibition on June 13 - 14 is only a couple months away. What special exhibit or demonstration do you have hid-den away? We are looking for more animal exhibits, rope mak-ing, planting demonstrations, wood stove cooking, broom mak-ing and more. We Remember Bonnie Knight passed away December 15, 2014. She is survived by her

husband, Edward. Bonnie and Eddie have been great supporters of the Mu-

seum. During shows, Bonnie could be found working in the kitchen. Togeth-

er they donated several important items to the Museum’s collection.

Reginald “Reg” Liscum, 76, passed away February 20, 2015. He is sur-vived by his wife, Judy. Reg took great interest in the Schoolhouse as Judy helped get the restored building ready for its dedication. Milford “Red” Curtis passed away March 10, 2015 at age 90. Red was an avid antique automobile collector and restorer. His interest in the Museum is reflected in the 1918 Model T coupe that he donated a few years ago. He and the Model T were often seen together during shows.

A great variety of items were donated to the Museum during 2014 including the extensive collection of horse-drawn vehicles in the Harden Collection donated by the grandchildren and items to furnish the Schoolhouse. The two doz-
